It’s a cruel irony that although thousands of gallons of rainfall in Indonesia each year, morethan 40 million people in theSoutheast Asian country lackaccess to clean water.

For many, the only safe option is bottled water, but this is an expensive and wasteful solution resulting in mass pollution of the seawater and surrounding countryside from discarded plastic bottles.

This July, Reece Grant recipient Jack Timmins will join his family’s initiative ‘LearnToLive’ in Likupang-Ambong to support the region’s desperate need of aid in healthcare, clean water and education.

Set to depart in a few short months, Jack’s busy making plans for the construction of the rainwater catchment and fi ltration system. The proposed system works to capture rainwater through a guttering system installed on the rooftop and

directing it into two 3,100L rainwater tanks. Utilising four layers of material – sand, gravel, carbon and silica – the rainwater is then fi ltered through to a secondary 225L tank. From here the water is pumped into portable bottles for community use.

“I’m looking forward to getting over there and starting the build,” said Jack.

“It’s great to see the families up and about for something positive happening in their community, which doesn’t normally see a lot of positive things.”

At the recent World Plumbing Day celebrations on March 10, Carlie Low was appointed as MPAQ’s new Female Plumbing Ambassador for 2017.

Hosted by the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ), the industry’s biggest event attracted more than 350 people. The purpose of the female plumbing ambassadorship is to promote the trade to women and encourage them to consider it as a future career path.

Carlie is a licensed plumber, drainer and gasfi tter. After several years working in this fi eld, Carlie was appointed as a Brisbane City Council Plumbing Inspector in 2004.

A previous winner of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission’s Women in Plumbing and Gas Award, Carlie is passionate about encouraging women to get into a trade and her success has helped pave the way for other women to pursue careers in the industry.

Carlie’s ambassadorship role will include speaking at schools and colleges to encourage students to consider an apprenticeship and think about where a trade could take them.

MPAQ Executive Director, Penny Cornah, said “we are very excited to announce the second MPAQ Female Plumbing Ambassador in what will be a signifi cant step forward for an industry in which female participation has historically been low, but we see that changing for the better!”

Congratulations to Carlie on being appointed as this year’s Female Ambassador for Plumbing.

Climate change is an international subject of controversy and shines the spotlight on many sources of pollution used in our everyday life.

In recent years, the topic of climate change has entered the world of HVAC-R, with hyrdofl uorocarbon (HFC) a key culprit of climate pollution. Currently an international agreement is in place to phase down HFC refrigerants and introduce natural alternatives.

China is leading the movement toward natural refrigerants, with their Foreign Economic Cooperation Offi ce (FECO) publishing The First Catalogue of Recommended Substitutes in 2015. These substitutes include C02, ammonia, hydrocarbons, air and water.

This shift is also occurring beyond China, with similar policies and negotiations happening around the globe.

So what does this mean for Australia? There is an expectation changes will begin to reach our shores over the coming years, with a phase-out of HFC refrigerants over a 15-year span.

Our federal government plans to reduce 85% of refrigerant emissions as part of the national emissions reduction plan.

For direct Australian Government communication on the phase-outprocess, download a pdf atenvironment.gov.au

Joel Barnett took out second place in the Boutique Garden Competition. The 34-year-old from InStyle Gardens in Geelong themed his entry around a love of tropical foliage and a desire to create a holiday-type environment at home. He’s coined his submission ‘Lush’.

“I love plants with interesting foliage all year round,” Joel explained. “There is still a big push towards low-maintenance gardens and foliage plants are low-maintenance, much more so than lawns.”

Also featured in Joel’s garden was the Skydrop controller, keeping the vertical plants irrigated with WiFi connectivity for truly smart watering.

“There is not a better looking controller on the market than these!” Joel said.

The controller was supplied by Reece Irrigation in Bell Park and helped keep Joel’s garden looking fresh for the duration of the event.

Brisbane International Airport has fi rst class seats...in the loo.

The Queensland airport won ‘the Total Facilities’ annual award for the “best bathroom facility” for its state-of-the-art wash basins, urinals, hand-dryers and touchscreen technology. The award-winning bathroom also displays stunning photography showcasing the state’s rich landscapes and enticing beaches.

Krishan Tangri, Brisbane Airport Corporation’s General Manager Assets, said the toilets created “the all-important fi rst impression of our city, state and country”.

“When international travellers set foot in one of our newly refurbished bathrooms, they’re taken on an aspirational journey around Australia — before they’ve even left the airport,” he said.

Now in its third year, the Best Bathroom Facility competition is in place to advocate washroom wellbeing.

“A grotty restroom environment can make or break a company’s reputation,” says Total Facilities’ Event Manager, Andrew Lawson. “Our awards were established to encourage awareness and pride among Australia’s facilities and workplace management professionals. And they set a great precedent.”

Brisbane International Airport should be fl ushed with pride after being crowned the best public toilet in the land, even beating the ritzy surrounds of a luxury hotel.

You heard right; it’s a park that loves a deluge, specifi cally designed to fl ood. Running through the centre of the city, the Trinity River is a large structural divide, prone to fl ooding. There’s been a long-term community demand for a permanent solution.

This project will utilise current space surrounding the river and turn it into a 10,000-acre nature district – designed to accommodate fl ooding within the area. When fl ooding occurs, the overfl ow will create a marsh-like waterscape. Mike Rawlings, elected mayor in 2011, has worked on the new phase of the project with bcWORKSHOP.

Brent Brown, director of bcWORKSHOP, acknowledges the odd nature of the local project.

“When we said we had to build a park that would fl ood, at fi rst people thought we were crazy,” Brown said.

However, after the reveal, it made sense to the public. Simmons Park will be a new portion of the Trinity River Project, which began in the early 2000’s.
