WHAT IS JUST READ? An outside of school reading program

designed to encourage even the most reluctant reader to begin to read for enjoyment.

Let’s look at how…

THE BOOKS

Students may choose any chapter book that seems interesting to them.

No magazines or newspapers. Students may read on a Tablet, Kindle or

Nook as long as he/she can track page numbers.

When students finish a book, they must move on to another book. Choosing a short book does not mean less work. Our reading is continuous.

Students must bring this book to class everyday!

Later in the year, I may specify a genre of book or give the students a list of book to choose from.

WARM-UPS Students are expected to ALWAYS BRING A BOOK! The first 10 minutes of class is a Silent Reading and

ROSE Reflections Warm-up. When the bell rings, the expectations for that time period

are as follows . Students should be: -In his/her seat-Silent-with Current Just Read Novel-Reading OR Writing the ROSE Reflections

In my class, students are tardy if they are not meeting the above mentioned expectations.

Students will not be allowed to go to the restroom/office/lockers in the first 10 minutes of class.

Students will receive a 20 point penalty per day for each day of the week that they do not bring a book to read.

READING LOG AND

WEEKLY GOALS

Each week, students will keep track of every time they read by logging page numbers on their Reading Log in their Just Read Spiral.

Each Friday, I will check that students have logged their data and completed the Weekly Page Number Goal.

Students may complete this goal all at one time or spread it out over the course of the week.

This will count as a minor grade each week. Students will set a new Weekly Page Number

Goal for the next week on that Friday.

READING LOGS: PAGE NUMBER CALCULATIONS

Students will be required to read a certain amount of pages per week based on their individual reading pace.

Rate Calculation Get out your Just Read Novel. At the start of the timer, begin reading. Read for 10 minutes at a comfortable pace. Now, count your pages. Multiply page numbers by 12. That number is your Weekly Reading Log

Expectation. Recalculations will occur as necessary.

WEEKLY READING LOG ASSIGNMENTS AND

THE ROSE MODEL

Students will be expected to complete one ROSE Reflections using The ROSE Model by Friday of each week. (see the “A ROSE by any other name…” handout for more information)

Students will complete these assignments in their Just Read spiral in the ROSE Reflection Section.

Each assignment should be labeled with the name of the book, author and the type of comparison

DIVERGENT-CHAPTER ONEBY VERONICA ROTH

There is just one mirror in our house. It is behind the sliding panel in the hallway upstairs. Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my mother cuts my hair.

I sit on the stool, and my mother stand behind me, trimming. The strands fall on the floor in a dull, blonde ring.

When she finishes, she pulls my hair away from my face and twists it into a knot. I note how calm she looks and how focused she is. She is well-practiced in the art of losing herself. I can’t say the same of myself.

I sneak a look at my reflection when she isn’t looking—not for the sake of vanity, but out of curiosity. A lot can happen to a person’s appearance in three months. In my reflection, I see a narrow face, wide eyes, and a long, thin nose—I still look like a little girl though sometime in the last few months I turned sixteen. The other factions celebrate birthdays, but we don’t. It would be self-indulgent… ….“So today is the day,” she says.

“Yes,” I reply.“Are you nervous?”I stare into my own eyes for a moment. Today is the day of the

aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in. And tomorrow at the Choosing Ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them….
