SUMMARYJ-Term provides a hands-on learning session for our students with opportunities that ignite curiosity, creativity and inspiration. Courses are deliberately experiential, giving time and freedom to explore topics outside of our normal college preparatory curriculum. J-Term provides our students with a distinctive experience that helps reveal talents, gifts and passions.

REGISTRATION Students will select their J-Term courses on the following dates:

· Seniors: Tuesday, 12/4 at the beginning of first period· Juniors: Tuesday, 12/4 at the beginning of second period· Sophomores: Wednesday, 12/5, at the beginning of first period· Freshman: Wednesday, 12/5, at the beginning of second period· 8th Graders: Thursday, 12/6, beginning of 1st period· 7th Graders: Thursday, 12/6, beginning of 2nd period· 6th Graders: Thursday, 12/6, beginning of 3rd period

RETREAT TEAM

Description: Students that are selected to be a part of the retreat team will be in charge of assisting Father Todd with the Middle School retreats that will take place during the first week of J-Term.

Students selected for retreat team will have to make additional course selections that they will attend for the second week of J-Term and will sign up for those courses with Mrs. Witthun on Monday, December 3rd.

Retreat team will consist of 12 students during J-Term.

Description: Students will be crafting different projects that will be designed to donate to different charities when we are finished. In addition, students will be designing projects that can be done with some of our lower campus students throughout the course as well.

10 SPORTS IN 10 DAYS

Description: Students will participate in 10 sports in 10 days. In addition to playing/participating in each sport, students will learn the rules and fundamentals of each sport. Throughout the class, students will work in teams to create a new sport and present their idea to the class. Some of the sports include basketball, volleyball and other great things!

Description: This course is for anyone interested in learning about yoga poses. It is for those with little to no experience and for those with varied levels of experience.

You will need to wear appropriate gym clothing. No yoga pants.

SPAIN & ITALY TRIP

Description: Our students will be immersed in language, history, culture, and the arts. We will begin our adventure in Florence, Italy, visit Ancient Rome, tour Madrid, and finish our adventure in beautiful Barcelona.

Registration for the trip has already occurred.

ONLINE PHOTOBOOK CREATING

Description: Students will learn how to produce engaging and dynamic digital photo books through a variety of online programs. Students will be required to provide at least 50 or more pictures to begin their photo book creation. These photos should be chosen around a theme (vacation, holiday, birthday, specific year of celebration). Students will learn how to use photobook design and layouts as well as adding text and images to enhance their photobook project.

Description: Ever wondered which side of the story is true? There have been multitudes of conspiracy theories surrounding events in history. In the class, we will use a variety of resources to research and come to our own conclusions on how events really went down.

Description: Forensics provide an opportunity for students to enhance communication skills through participation in Theater, Debate and Speech activities. Students choose from an array of 14 speech categories, which are a combination of individual and group events. Once a category is chosen, students create, develop and practice their performance. Constructive evaluation in a safe atmosphere empowers students to gain confidence in the important life skill of oral interpretation. Categories include: Impromptu Speaking, Demonstration Speech, Extemporaneous Speech, Informative Speech, Moments in History, Oratory, Public Address, Special Occasion, Farrago, Group Interpretative Reading, Play Acting, Poetry, Prose, Radio News Reporting, Humorous Solo Acting, Serious Solo Acting and Storytelling.

In this course you will learn how to touch-type—that is, to type text you read from a printed page or a computer screen without looking at your keyboard. With the skills you master here, you'll become faster and more confident at the keyboard.

Description: This J-Term course will excite both the novice runner and the experienced athlete. Students will study and put into practice the Essential Eleven components necessary to improve as a runner. We will also hit the roads of Kenosha, spend time in the weight room, and run circles on the indoor track at Carthage College.

JUNIOR CHEF

Description: Do you binge watch Food Network? Is it your dream to be in Chopped or Master Chef? Then this is the class for you. In this J-Term we will be introduced to various cooking techniques and kitchen basics. Students will compete to plan and create the best dishes in four categories: Breakfast, Soup/Chili, Dinner and Dessert. In each round, a panel will judge the student's dishes to see which group will be named Junior Chef Champions!

SPORTS & SOCIETY

Description: Sport plays a pervasive role in almost all of our lives as fans, players, and consumers. Despite this omnipresence, sports remain an understudied topic. This course will attempt to analyze the impact of sports. We will explore the topic of sport from a critical perspective. We will seek to answer questions such as: How does sport participation teach people important norms in society? How does sport reflect class relations? How do people become involved in sports, become defined as athletes, derive meaning from participation, and make transitions out of sports into the rest of their lives? How sports are gendered activities, and how do they reproduce dominant ideas about gender in society?

Description: This class is designed to enhance your ability to gain a deeper knowledge of various sports that we cannot cover in detail during the regular physical education sessions. This section will allow you to explore different sports that you can participate in for a lifetime. This will be in a non-competitive environment in which you will learn sports that you can participate in from adolescence through adulthood. Throughout out this course we will engage in gym and weight room activities in which we will do circuit training and dry land training activities.

INTERNSHIPS

Description: Internships provide our students with a hands-on experience in an area of their interest. It allows them to see and experience the working life of an experienced professional. Internships help students discovers their abilities, interests, and passion as well as provide real-world practice in a field of potential study.

Students must secure their own internships and may be a full day or half-day. If half-day, student must be enrolled in another J-term class.

All internships will be approved by Administration. See Mrs. Hantke for necessary paperwork.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Description: This class is designed for boys with the basic skills of volleyball that are interested in playing competitively. Since SJCA does not currently offer a Varsity Boys Volleyball Team this class is meant to give boys the opportunity to experience what a team would be like in high school. This class will be coached at a high competitive level and any student signing up for this class should have a strong desire to learn the correct way to play the sport.

Description: This course is a study of the fundamentals of baking items typically included in a bakery (cookies, bars, cakes, quick breads, etc.). Students will learn functions of ingredients, tool and equipment use, baking terminology, measurement conversion, and proper kitchen safety. Delicious desserts is open to all middle and high school students of varying levels of baking experience/skills.

Description: Have you ever wanted to learn how to sign? CULINARY BOOT CAMP

Description: Students will develop menus and create meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with emphasis on cleanliness, sanitation and safety using proper techniques. Students will also learn about nutrition, including calorie counting, portion size, and daily requirements. Students will learn frying, baking, sautéing, and preparing foods in different methods to cook. Sampling of prepared food is part of this course.

Description: This course examines Hollywood feature films as historical evidence. Students will view movies on various topics such as World War I, the Great Depression, World War II. Description: Ever wonder what it’d be like to be a millionaire?Through real world examples, students will begin to learn and understand the role of money in everyday life. Description: Chess is the classic game that develops focus, spatial thinking, and strategic application. The class is geared for all levels of chess players. All students will learn chess history, study classic chess scenarios, and will compete daily against other students in a low-stress environment. Beginners will learn basic game rules and opening tactic moves. Intermediate and advanced players will learn notation, sophisticated combinations, tactics, checkmates, strategies, and advanced opening, middle, and endgame concepts. FAUX CALLIGRAPHY

Description: Have you ever heard of Faux Calligraphy? I'm sure you have; it's a fancy way of saying Fake Calligraphy. Faux calligraphy can be used to create a calligraphy look with any writing tool: you can use chalk, marker, pen, pencil, crayon, or anything else you want to use to create your lettering piece. The beauty of faux calligraphy is that with just a few easy steps--and your own handwriting! --you are able to replicate real calligraphy! Practice does mark perfect, so we will be doing a good amount of practice each day before we do our final piece of art.

*If you are taking this course for the second time around and find yourself to be more than a beginning, we will create a project.
