From the Pastor’s Desk The Epiphany of the Lord
Theme: All Nations Have Seen the Light of the Lord!
Today is the Solemnity of the “Epiphany” a word for “manifestation of God.”
“Theophany.” These lexicons are used by Eastern Christians. The Roman Catholic and
Protestant churches emphasize the visit of the Magi when they celebrate the Epiphany.
The Eastern Orthodox churches focus on Jesus’ baptism. However, the Epiphany is one
of the oldest Christian feasts.
In today’s feast, we are struck by the theme of the light. The Messiah who showed
himself in Bethlehem to the lowly shepherds of the region continues to reveal himself as
the light of every people on every time and place. To the Magi, coming from the East to
adore him, the light of the one “who has been born King of the Jews” (Mt. 2:2) appears in
the form of a heavenly body, so bright as to attract their attention and guide them to
Jerusalem. Thus he sets them on the trail of the ancient Messianic prophesies, “A star
shall come forth from Jacob, and a scepter shall rise from Israel…” Numbers 24: 17).
My dear brothers and sisters, how striking is the symbol of the star that recurs in all the
images of Christmas and Epiphany! It still gives rise to deep feelings although, as with so
many other sacred signs, it risks becoming common place because of its commercial
overuse. continued on page 3

destino y bajo dios.
(Continued from page 1)
Restored to its original meaning or context, the star we
contemplate over the crib also speaks to the mind and heart
of the man of our modern world. Epiphany happens in our
lives when we recognize Christ as our King and our priest.
Epiphany happens in our lives when we see God’s image in
each one of us. Epiphany happens when we allow Christ to
die for us and we embrace His suffering and come to
acknowledge His glory.
A good question for reflection on this day of Epiphany is,
who does not feel the need for a “star” to guide him/her on
his/her journey of life? Individuals and nations both feel
this need. To satisfy the universal yearning for salvation,
the Lord Himself chose a people to be the guiding star for
“all the families. of the earth” (Gn. 12:3) with the
Incarnation of his Son, God then expanded His choice to
every people, no matter their race or culture. Thus the
Church came into being, formed of men and women who,
“united in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit, press
onwards towards the Kingdom of the Father and are bearers
of a message of salvation intended for men and
women.” (Guaduim et spes, Number 1.)
And so, as we celebrate the feast of the manifestations of
the Magi, we feel very close to them. Why? Because their
route is our route. In our hearts we follow a star. We too
hunger for what they hungered for. Was peace only for
them? The answer is no. Peace is for the whole world and
mankind. The journey would be long; the journey would
demand great faith and sacrifice. The truth is that the
journey would end in finding the child and his mother. As
we participate in the Mass of today, we ourselves will come
as the Magi did and offer our gifts.
We may not have frankincense, myrrh and gold to offer.
But the most precious thing in our lifetime is our very own
lives and this is the gift we offer. We pray like incense
rising to heaven in gratitude for God for sending us a
Savior. And of course, the last one is the hardest. We give
our life to Him and walk with Him as He grows up, as He
teaches, as He is condemned, as He dies on the cross and
gives His life to His Father.
Finally, let us pray with all peoples of the world. Number
one, that one day under heaven all men will recognize that
we are brothers and sisters. Number two, that the only
meaning for life is what our Savior Jesus has taught us— to
love God and learn to love each other. Number three, that
the world may be full of purpose and meaning: For all its
set backs, for all its wars and rumors of wars, for all its
disappointments, it is the one great hope as we move to-
wards eternal life, one family, one destiny and under God.
