J. Nolan Etters to Receive The OIney Medal

I. Nolan Etters, professor of textile sci-ence at the University of Georgia, isis year's recipient of the Oiney Medal

for achievement in textile chemistry.Etters is a 1960 graduate of Glemson

University, with a BS in textile chem-istry, where he also earned an MS twoyears later. In 1986 he completed hisPhD in clothing and textiles at the Uni-versity of North Garolina at Greens-boro.

Etters' involvement in textiles goesback to his childhood. He was raisedin a Springs mill village in Ghester.S.G.. and worked as a sweeper at theSprings Eureka Mill. With the assis-tance of a Springs Educational Loan,made available to children of mill em-ployees. Etters was able to attendGlemson University, where he wouldrather have studied to become a pro-fessor of English literature. After beingtold that such a path was not economi-cally sound, he decided instead to con-tinue his education in the field of tex-tile chemistry. Etters began his indus-try career at Dan River; a career thatlasted 23 years until downsizingcaused him to be laid-off. During theyears of 1962-85, he served the com-pany as a research chemist, senior re-search chemist and corporate seniorscientist.

In 1986, Etters began his career inacademics. He was an associate profes-sor at Louisiana State University from1986-87. In 1987. he moved to the Uni-versity of Georgia, holding the positionof associate professor and in 1991 wasnamed a full professor. From August1991 through December 1993, Etterswas acting head of the Textiles, Mer-chandising and Interiors department.He is now completely devoted to hisduties as a professor at the school.

Professional Activities

Etters has been very active in the As-sociation since he joined as a fresh-man at Clemson. His involvement in-cludes—Northern Piedmont SectionResearch committee, chairman 1972;national councilor, 1975-77; Gommit-tee on Applied Dyeing Theory, chair-man 1965-77 and 1990-92; Committeeon Local Sections, chairman 1978-80;Technical Program Committee, Na-tional Technical Gonference, chair-man 1961; Statistics Advisory Com-

Etters has authored 76 publicationswhich have appeared in journals suchas Textile Chemist and Colorist. Tex-tile Research Journal. Textile Asia,American Dyestuff Reporter. Journalof Applied Polymer Science. Journalof the Society of Dyers and Colourists,Canadian Textile Journal, Colourage,Industrial and Engineering ChemistryHesearch, Journal of Applied PolvmerScience, CIETEX, America's Textiles,Textile World. Textilveredlung, andModern Knitting Management.

His writings cover a broad spec-trum of topics, including—chemistryof dyeing, dyeing theory, dyeing ofdenim, environmental protection, tex-tile chemical quality analysis, colorscience, industry and academic co-operation, thermal fixation of dyeing,inducement and measurement ofparticulate migration, and diffusionequations.

Etters has also given some 39 pre-sentations at scientific conferencesand meetings including the AATCCInternational Conference & Exhihition,Technical Conference of the AmericanAssociation for Textile TechnologyInc., American Ghemical Society,American Society for Quality Control,German Association of Textile Chem-ists and Colorists, Swiss Associationof Textile Chemists and Colorists, avariety of AATGG sectional meetings,workshops and symposia, and Clem-son University conferences and semi-nars.

Etters has been an active participanton AATCC Intersectional Paper Com-petition committees. He has been in-volved in committees that have placedfirst five times, second place twice andthird place once. His first year of awardwinning ITPC participation was in1972.

Etters is a full member of GammaSigma Delta and Sigma Xi. He has heenhonored by being listed in theMcGraw-Hill publication, "Leaders inthe Textile Industr\'." Etters is also amember of the editorial advisor\'boardof American Dyestuff Reporter.

Etters is married to the formerBetty L. Gentry of Chester. S.C. Mrs.Etters was the first TCC cover girl, ap-pearing on the cover of the March 1971issue. She holds an MBA from the Uni-versity of North Garolina at Greens-boro. Mrs. Etters also teaches in the De-partment of Textiles. Merchandising &Interiors at the University of Georgia.

Etters has a variety of hobbies, someof which are •uTiting. gardening, mo-torized vehicles and country music.

The OIney Medal

Established in 1944 in honor of Dr.Louis Atwell Olney. the founder andfirst president of AATCC. The OlneyMedal recognizes outstanding achieve-ment in textile or polymer chemistryor other fields of chemistry of majorimportance to textile science. Theaward consists of a gold medal, a scrolland an honorarium.
