The Neurologic DiagnosisA Practical Bedside Approach

The Neurologic Diagnosis: A Practical Bedside Approach is an introductory text that simplifies the often unwieldy method of making a neurologic diagnosis. Medical students are often intimi-dated by a deluge of data, extensive differential diagnoses, and have no organizational structure to follow. Diagnostic techniques of general medi-cine are not applicable. Neurology is a unique specialty since it requires the intermediary step of an anatomic diagnosis prior to proffering a differential diagnosis. Yet the required knowledge of neuroanatomy need not be profound for the student who will specialize in any field other than neurology and neurosurgery.

Features 7 Focused, introductory text that simplifies the method of making a neurologic diagnosis 7 Concisely written for medical students and resi-dents 7 Emphasizes novel, practical approaches and techniques that can be used to establish neuro-anatomic diagnosis before formulating a differntial diagnosis

Computer Medical DatabasesThe First Six Decades (1950–2010)

Chapter 1 offers an overview of the basic computer technology. Each succeeding chapter, describes the problems in medicine, followed by a review in chronological sequence of why and how computers were applied to try to meet these problems. Only the technical aspects of computer hardware, soft-ware, and communications are discussed as they are necessary to explain how the technology was applied. This approach generally led to defining the objectives for applications of medical informatics. At the end of each chapter, the author summa-rizes his personal views and interpretations of the chapter contents. Although the concurrent evolu-tion of medical informatics in Canada, Europe, and Japan certainly influenced workers in the United States, the scope of this historical review is limited to the development of medical informatics within the United States.

Features 7 At the end of each chapter, the author summa-rizes his personal views and interpretations of the chapter contents 7 Review focused on medical informatics within the United States 7 Written by an expert in the field of health informatics

Bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Multidisciplinary Approach

During the early 19th century, it was discovered that adding yellow (now called white) phospho-rous to matchstick heads made it easier to ignite matches. The phosphorous vapors were breathed in by workers and combined with other chemicals in the body to produce a potent nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate. Today’s oral nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates and intravenous nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates circulate around the body the same way as the phosphorous vapors, and are absorbed into bone and ingested by osteoclasts.

Features 7 First multidisciplinary text on the subject, by worldwide experts 7 Update of the latest advances, technical details, and expert advice regarding this subject 7 Presents multiple designs, explanatory figures on physiopathogen-esis, and clinical imaging 7 Clinical case discus-sions and practical advice for incorporation into common practice

Postoperative Complications in ColoproctologyPrevention and Treatment

The volume is authored by a colorectal surgeon with long-standing clinical and scientific experi-ence and is devoted to the management of complications following surgery of the anorectum and the pelvic floor. It is aimed not only at general surgeons, perineologists and, of course, proctologists, but also at gastroenterologists, endoscopists, radiologists and physiotherapists, i.e. those who may be involved in both diagnosis and cure whenever an adverse event, either unpredictable or potentially preventable, causes an intra- or postoperative, early or late, mild or life-threatening complication. Severe bleeding, dehiscence, perforation, anorectal stricture, fecal incontinence, and even caval vein thrombosis, fatal Fournier gangrene and pneumomediastinum may occur after anal surgery. The incidence, pathogen-esis prevention and treatment of such events are discussed in detail in 10 chapters with 30 tables, 200 illustrations and more than 1000 references. Both conventional procedures and recent innova-tions are reported. “Unforgettable clinical cases (complications with litigation)” and “Tips and Tricks” are sections increasing the appeal of this book.

L’impostazione è scientifica, “evidence based”, ma dà importanza all’eclettismo ragionato e alla chirurgia su misura.

Physeal Injury Other Than Fracture

This book documents all the ways a growth plate can be damaged, other than fracture. This damage can be inflicted by a wide variety of insults, most of which are uncommon occurrences. They all, however, have two similar characteristics: normal roentgenographs at the time of insult and premature complete or partial arrest noted weeks, months, or years later. Because of this delay, the arrest is often not suspected or recognised early. The resulting bone deformity and relative shortening usually go undetected until corrective surgery is needed. This book emphasises etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of these injuries.

Features 7 Brings together all the information concerning growth plate injuries into one readily accessible source 7 Based on the unique resources of the Mayo Clinic regarding patient follow-up 7 Well structured and heavily illustrated
