FROMGENERATION TO GENERATIONA PRECIOUS LEGACY

oe Durra remembers making his first donation to the JewishCommunity Federation in 1958. “I think I gave them fifteen dollars,” he says with a laugh. Joe made his mark in real estate property manage-ment, but like many members of his generation, he has had a long andvaried career. He has been a photographer—working for San Francisco’s

legendary Moulin Photography Studio—a book publisher, and he served inthe Army’s Chemical Engineering Corps during the Korean War. “The armywas a good experience for me. It was like going back to college—a lot of fun!”Joe remembers. He received degrees in both chemical engineering and law.

Durra has also been involved with the American Jewish Committee for overfifty years. He served as President of the Bay Area chapter and he was also amember of the AJC National Board of Governors. Joe was given the AJC’sDistinguished Service Award in 1998 in recognition of his service.

Joe is a first-generation American; his father was from Damascus and hismother from Ukraine. He was born in Chicago and grew up in Indiana with his parents and two brothers. His wife Joan was a third-generationAmerican and a San Francisco native. Together they had two children: Louis, a pianist and Eva, an investment banker. For the Durra family, giving has always been a tradition, “Joan and I passed on our belief in the importance of Jewish philanthropy to our children.” His daughter,

Eva, an investment banker in New York, serves as a board trustee forChildren’s Aid and Family Services, a group that Joe has also supported.

His long term involvement with the Jewish community led Joe to the JewishCommunity Endowment Fund and the establishment of The Durra FamilyPhilanthropic Fund which was created to honor his wife Joan, who passedaway in 2003. Through his fund he has supported many causes in both theJewish community and the medical research field. Joe and his children made a significant donation to the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center for theirBreast Cancer Targeted Therapies Project in honor of Joan. He also has funded scholarships to students at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.Joe believes that, “getting a degree in engineering teaches you how to solveproblems. Science and engineering has always been an important part of mycareer. And being Jewish has always been an important part of who I am.”

Speaking about the JCEF, Joe commented, “Giving away money is more difficult than earning it. But the trust I have for the Endowment Fund makes it easy. The staff at the Endowment Fund helps me with my giving by suggesting programs that I might want to support. I insist on accountabilityfor how the money I give is used, and the JCEF provides me with a detailedaccounting of where the money goes and how it is spent. This accountability is the essential part of successful philanthropy.”

oanna Aptekar-Strober and her husband, Jason Strober believe in continuing the legacy of Jewish philanthropy that runs through boththeir families. As residents of Silicon Valley, the Strobers take an onlineapproach to making their philanthropic decisions, employing theinternet for research and for making recommendations for donations

from their donor advised philanthropic fund.

For the Strobers, philanthropy is a family concern. Both Jason and Joanna’s parents have been involved with the Jewish community for many years. Joannaremembers that, “Growing up, I always felt good that my parents were so supportive to others in the community. I would often encounter people at the synagogue and the Jewish community center who would comment to me aboutmy parents’ dedication to the community. I look forward to the day when people will make these kinds of comments to our children, Sarah, Jared and Ari.”

The Strobers also value the sense of community that comes from long-termengagement with Jewish philanthropy. Joanna commented, “Being involvedgave my parents—and now Jason and myself—a set of like-minded friends.Over time, we’ve formed roots in the Jewish community and doing so givesour family a sense of place. It is a feeling of comfort and it makes me want tocontinue our parents’ work as a way to provide generational continuity fromtheir generation to our generation, and on down to our children’s.”

JJoanna frequently uses JCEF Online, a web based grant recommendation tool.“The Endowment’s online grant making ability is a major value proposition forus. My ten year old daughter Sarah and I do research and make recommenda-tions for our family’s philanthropic fund online, and as a result we end up giving more money away. With three young children, we do not have the timeto keep track of all of the bookkeeping details involved with our philanthropy. The fact that the JCEF handles all of the paperwork means that we can spendmore of our time making recommendations for giving.”

Joanna and Jason both have full time careers and a commitment to equally share the responsibilities for raising their children. After the birth of their second child, Joanna noticed how all too often, career oriented mothers had to handle the great majority of their family’s child rearing while also workingjobs with inflexible schedules. This led her to co-author with Sharon Meers, the forthcoming book Getting to 50-50: How Working Moms and Dads Can Have It All by Sharing it All. Joanna described the book as helping, “parents to maintain full time jobs and to split their parenting duties on a 50-50 basis. It is a guide for negotiating the conflicts that entrepreneurial parents facebetween demanding careers and the needs of their children.”

Through their work in the Jewish and general communities, the Strobers are giving renewed meaning to the principle of “From Generation to Generation.”

oe Durra remembers making his first donation to the JewishCommunity Federation in 1958.

JJoanna frequently uses JCEF Online, a web based grant recommendation tool.“The Endowment’s online grant making ability is a major value proposition forus. oe Durra remembers making his first donation to the JewishCommunity Federation in 1958.

As residents of SiliconValley, the Strobers take an onlineapproach to making their philanthropic decisions, employing theinternet for research and for making recommendations for donations

from their donor advised philanthropic fund.

For the Strobers, philanthropy is a family concern. Both Jason and Joanna’s parents have been involved with the Jewish community for many years. Joannaremembers that,“Growing up, I always felt good that my parents were so supportive to others in the community. I would often encounter people at the synagogue and the Jewish community center who would comment to me aboutmy parents’ dedication to the community. I look forward to the day when peoplewillmakethese kindsof comments to our children,Sarah,JaredandAri.”

This led her to co-author with Sharon Meers, the forthcoming book Getting to 50-50: How Working Moms and Dads Can Have It All by Sharing it All.Joanna described the book as helping, “parents to maintain full time jobs and to split their parenting duties on a 50-50 basis. It is a guide for negotiating the conflicts that entrepreneurial parents facebetween demanding careers and the needs of their children.”

Through their work in the Jewish and general communities, the Strobers are giving renewed meaning to the principle of “From Generation to Generation.”
