JAZZ G R A M J A Z Z I N S T I T U T E O F C H I C A G O FEBRUARY 2013 www. JazzInChicago .org DEDICATED TO JAZZ IN ALL ITS FORMS “He was a very sensitive human being, a very humble human being, and highly creative,” pianist Ramsey Lewis said. “All the musicians who live in Chicago held him in high esteem.” In recognition of his hallmark bands and years of mentoring and introducing young artists to the public, Awakening to the Xperience: A Tribute to Ken Chaney will celebrate his music with performances by Chicago’s leading jazz artists. Duke Payne will lead off with a bagpipe salute, followed by a Bebop set led by pianist Willie Pickens, with young guns Rajiv Halim and Irvin Pierce on saxophone, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Zakiya Powell on trombone, Josh Ramos on bass, and Ernie Adams on drums. Chaney’s much-admired Awakening band will include alumni Ari Brown on saxophone, Pharez Whitted on trumpet, Josh Ramos on bass, Ernie Adams on drums, THE JAZZ INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO is excited to roll out the 16th season of the JazzCity free concert series, a collaboration between the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Park Distinct. This season is dedicated to two people without whom JazzCity would not have been possible: cultural arts advocate Helen Doria (1951-2012) and pianist Ken Chaney (1939-2012). As Deputy Director, New Program Development at the Chicago Park District, Helen Doria welcomed our idea to program free concerts in neighborhoods across the city. She helped shape and grow the program while presiding over a renaissance in cultural programs and big ideas at the Park District. Master musician Ken Chaney was JazzCity’s music director. His creative programming chops gave birth to the BeBop Brass band and many other concerts that brought musicians and audiences together in unexpected ways. We will celebrate their spirit and continue their legacies with a new season of spectacular music, beginning with a tribute to Mr. Chaney. by the Jazz Institute of Chicago under the auspices of the CopperBridge Foundation, was truly a unique and enlightening opportunity to get to know the people and culture of the city of Havana and the country of Cuba. It was an extremely visceral experience, one that filled our eyes, ears, and hearts with both joy and compassion. For, while Cuba and Havana face economic challenges, they are abundantly rich in both culture and the arts.

The numerous people and artists we met have overcome economic conditions to live fulfilling and inspirational lives while maintaining a surprisingly positive outlook.

We visited the homes of many talented artists who produce stunningly beautiful paintings, photographs, and multimedia works of art. We also visited two dance troupes who displayed great passion and talent despite modest surroundings. And of course you can’t speak of Havana without mentioning the music which is prevalent everywhere. Whether it was a street corner trio playing son or the sublime Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés in concert, we experienced Cuba’s great music at every turn.

These are heady and interesting times for Cuba as the freedoms we so readily enjoy seem to be taking hold

in this picturesque island nation. Observing the people, culture, and beauty of this enchanting place was a one of a kind experience. The sights and sounds of Cuba will remain with all of us for quite some time!

for jazz in general and Chicago jazz in particular. The following roundup is not meant to be a best of list, but rather a survey of the eclecticism one can find in the local scene.

Ken Vandermark was the artist-in-residence at the 2012 Chicago Jazz Festival. The saxophonist has always been quite prolific and last year was no exception. Let’s mention two recordings. Mark in the Water (Not Two) is a return to the solo format in which he excels. His schizophrenic bass clarinet, shrill clarinet, and soulful tenor takes turn to deliver an emotionally-charged and thought-provoking performance. Platform 1

Takes Off (Clean Feed) showcases a new collaborative project. Most of the members of this international quintet contribute multipart compositions that have the horns firing in every direction and engaging in busy conversations. The material is structured enough to keep the proceedings grounded.

Drummer Calvin Weston does not hail from Chicago, but his new album bears undoubtedly the mark of local bass player Karl E.H. Seigfried who also displays his wonderful chops on guitar. Of Alien Feelings (Imaginary Chicago Records) includes a surprising cast. Jack Walrath, Todd Rundgren, Vernon Reid, or Supertramp’s John Heliwell have never been seen sharing credits before. The brand of fusion the band purveys owes more to Frank Zappa or prog rock than to Weather Report or Mahavishnu Orchestra. And Weston’s rock-steady beats and Seigfried’s flamboyance makes it a fun ride.

Drummer Makaya McCraven’s Split Decision (Chicago Sessions) is an enjoyable piano trio date from beginning to end. The wild card is Tim Seisser whose electric bass gives the classic compositions the necessary suppleness and elastic bounce to give them a modern sheen. An inspired debut album that bodes well for the future.

The Fast Citizens is a group with a revolving leader. On Gather (Delmark) the role is fulfilled by cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm who gives the ensemble a more rock-oriented edge. However, the various pieces provide a good share of time for introspection and ruminations, which underlines the various and well-balanced abilities of the musicians involved.

Three members of the Fast Citizens are in the Aram Shelton Quartet, including the leader. The band’s newest opus Everything for Somebody (Single Speed) builds on the strengths of its predecessor and adds new colors. At its most infectious, the band is reminiscent of the South African jazz of Abdullah Ibrahim. Elsewhere, the band tightness serves hard-driven postbop numbers, more abstruse or melancholic explorations, or nods to Ornette Coleman.

Bass player Matt ulery’s By a Little Light (Greenleaf) represents another step in bridging the world of jazz with folk music. The double disk is divided between instrumental and vocal numbers featuring Grazyna Auguscik primarily. The real jazz anchor is pianist Ben Lewis whose solos are deeply rooted in the tradition. But for the most part, Ulery takes the listener on a tasteful journey paved with beautifully evocative segments informed by and channeled through his various musical influences.

Another musician interested in playing jazz with a folk sensibility is saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson who now resides in New York but is a graduate of the Jazz Links program. The baritone sax is not an easy instrument and choosing to record a solo album Michiana (Primary) shows that Parzen-Johnson is not afraid to take on the toughest of challenges. His focus is definitely to explore the gentle side of his instrument. And on a couple of pieces, he uses overdubs and effects to open up possibilities and expand his sonic palette.

Being a bassist, vocalist, and educator, the list of clinics and master classes I attended at the 2013 Jazz Education Network Conference was undoubtedly eclectic. I attended a talk about jazz bass basics with John Clayton, a panel discussion about preparing students for the professional world with Javon Jackson, John Clayton, Bob Mintzer, and Don Braden, a workshop on jazz scat singing with Justin Binek, a presentation about engaging Jazz Audiences with Matt Wilson, a lecture on the arranging and composing of Melba Liston with Geof Bradfield, and more. I anticipated that I would gather valuable information about each specific topic, but did not anticipate such a unified, overarching message to be emphasized throughout all the sessions I attended. The message I came away with was as follows:

Effective jazz education instills in students a deep

knowledge of the art form, a connectedness with one’s

community, the pursuit of lifelong learning, and the

ability to be creative in all aspects of the music business

(being self-sufficient, presenting relevant and interesting

concerts, creative promotion, etc.)

Since 2005, the Jazz Links program has provided dedicated support for young musicians in Chicago, and already incorporates many of these elements of effective jazz education. From performance opportunities and

master classes with Chicago musicians, to workshops on professionalism and leadership in music, students are exposed to a wide range of topics that address the many facets of professional musicianship.

During the panel discussion on how to prepare young musicians for the professional world, Saxophonist Javon Jackson stated “Real music is learned onstage- in a public situation.” In this spirit, the Jazz Institute provides regular opportunities for public performance through Jazz Links Jam Sessions, JazzCity opening acts, and Jazz Links Ensemble gigs throughout the community.

I left the conference in Atlanta feeling both encouraged and inspired. I was pleased to find that the Jazz Links program is on the right track for preparing well rounded professional musicians, and I was inspired to explore ways to expand and deepen how we impact our Jazz Links students. In the coming year, the Jazz Links curriculum will include more community outreach opportunities and a more comprehensive jazz history component.
