“Come unto Him” from Messiah Georg Frideric Handel, 1741

Come unto him, all ye that labor, that are heavy laden, and he will give you rest.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith)

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.

Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching

by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with

outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.

Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain

and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life,

breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us this far along the way. In times of

bitterness you did not abandon us, but guided us into the path of love and light.

In every age you sent prophets to make known your loving will for all humanity. The cry of the poor has

become your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with the eternal chorus of rejoicing who forever sing to the glory

of your name:

Sanctus and Benedictus (spoken by all)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

-Isaiah 6:3b; Psalm 118:25-26; Matthew 21:9b

In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to the afflicted, to break bread with

the outcast and despised, and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus:

Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory.

Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to free all the

earth from the bonds of slavery and death. Come, Lord Jesus!

Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with courage and

wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world. Come, Spirit of freedom!

Join our prayers and praise with your saints of every age that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection, we

might live in the freedom and hope of your Son. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it

is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND POURING OF THE CUP

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE If you are joining at the table from home, please take part in Communion with whatever “elements” you have.

In the sanctuary, communion elements may be found in the pew where you are seated.

MUSIC FOR ORGAN Organbook I (1989): 4. Serenade Ned Rorem (b. 1923)

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Nourishing God, thank you for inviting us to your table where all are welcome, and for feeding us with

the bread of life and quenching our thirst with the cup of blessing. As you have filled our lives with love

and hope, may we be a source of your love and hope for others who hunger and thirst for good news. Amen.

* CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

POSTLUDE FOR ORGAN Fugue in G Minor [BWV 558/2] attr. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

This fugue is found in a manuscript that includes an attendant prelude along with seven other prelude/fugue pairs; thus, these are known as the

“Eight Little Preludes and Fugues.” The compositional craft and manuscript clues of these works lead to the likelihood that they are not by Bach

(the attribution comes from the lineage of copying and transmission of the pieces in the manuscript by some of Bach’s students and, perhaps, his sons).

If not Bach, then whom? At this point, speculation (by Peter Williams, noted Bach scholar) focuses on composers from southern Germany.

*indicates standing for those who are able.

Following the conclusion of the postlude, online participants will be given

the opportunity to unmute themselves and to greet one another.

The chancel flowers are given to the Glory of God.

Parish Concerns Phyllis McBride

To families with young children: Welcome! We are glad you’re here!

“Jesus said to them, ‘Allow the children to come to me. Don’t forbid them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people like

these children…’ Then he hugged the children and blessed them.” Mark 10:14-16

Jesus not only welcomed children, he also blessed them. Know that your children’s presence in worship is both

welcomed and a blessing to us all!

Here are some ideas to help make the most out of worship as a family:

❖ Bring crayons or colored pencils from home so your children can color the provided coloring pages and

illustrated children’s bulletins. It might also be helpful to bring a hard surface (a book or clipboard) for

them to use while coloring.

❖ Explain what is happening during worship and what is coming next. Let children cross things off in the

bulletin as they happen. Whispering is okay!

❖ When it’s time to stand, allow children to kneel on the pews if they would like.

❖ Allow children to participate in the offering by putting in your envelope or putting in their own gift in

the offering plates near the doors as you leave. A picture drawn for God is appropriate!

Most importantly, relax and be at peace. We know that God made children to be full of energy and excitement.

WEEKDAY REOPENING OF RYE PRESBYTERIAN Starting Monday, July 6, the church offices and building will begin to open in a limited way. While it remains wise for as much church business as possible to be conducted on the phone, Zoom, or email, you may have need to come to the church building. We request that you visit the church only if you are healthy, are showing no signs or symptoms of illness, and have not had any known exposure to COVID-19 in the preceding two weeks. If you do come to the church, please take careful note of the guidelines that are in place so that we may all safely use the church building together. Those guidelines may be found here.

ONLINE GIVING Online donation options are available on the RPC Website Giving page. Click here or scan the QR Code to the right with your cell phone to donate. Please contact Maida Robinson at [email protected], if you have any questions or need assistance. Many thanks for your continued generosity and support of the church!

RPC PRAYER WALL As a way to connect to one another and to God throughout this time, you are invited to make prayer requests known on the RPC website Prayer Wall (click here). Together we continue to pray for all those in need throughout this ordeal. All can share anonymously, but please keep in mind that it is a public forum.

The Sesquicentennial Service Challenge 2020 marks the sesquicentennial of our sanctuary. 150 years of people coming in and going out through the doors of our beautiful sanctuary. People come in to find their faith strengthened and renewed as we worship together. People then go out in service to the world beyond our doors.

The Mission and Outreach Committee invites you to join your fellow disciples of Rye Presbyterian Church in the 2020 Sesquicentennial Service Challenge!

The goal: at least 150 minutes of service from every member for every month of 2020. With 1052 members, that would mean the total number of services minutes for 2020 would be 1,893,600!

Please know that ANY volunteer service you do either with the church or in the community COUNTS. If you are giving the gift of your time, it counts. When logging your minutes, you can group your minutes together. You don’t need to log each activity separately. Simply total your minutes and then list, as briefly as possible, what activities you did. The two things we are tracking are total number of minutes (not hours), and the variety of activities that people are involved in as they give the gift of their time by volunteering.

Minutes logged thus far: 178,361
