Jones Henderson County Public Schools www.henderson.k12.nc.us 1 J Oe shOOk, 2011-12 hcPs teacheR Of the YeaR The 2011-12 Teacher of the Year for the Henderson County Public Schools is Joe Shook, the Automotive Service Technology teacher at Balfour Education Center. As the HCPS Teacher of the Year, Mr. Shook was presented a plaque and $1,000 to be used for his professional advancement by a SunTrust executive during the annual Teacher of the Year Luncheon on May 6th. SunTrust Bank sponsors the luncheon each year to recognize the valuable investment educators make in the lives of children and to honor the Teacher of the Year nominees for HCPS. At the conclusion of the luncheon, the system-wide Teacher of the Year is announced. Mr. Shook has taught Automotive Service Technology at Balfour for the past six years. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Science from Western Carolina University; a Major in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Kimmel School of Technology; and an Associates Degree in Industrial Technology from Greenville Technical College. He serves on the School Improvement Team, the School Safety Committee, as the SkillsUSA advisor for the Balfour chapter, and as the CTE Department Chair. Mr. Shook also coordinates student and faculty fire safety training on a regular basis with the Mountain Home Fire Department. Draper, the Assistant Instructor.p The North High AFJROTC Marksmanship Team (Cadets Chase Austin, Matthew Slagle, William Moffitt, Aaron Redden, and Kenneth Hinkle) competed in the National 2011 AFJROTC Service Championship. The Team finished 18th overall out of 23 teams. p The North High AFJROTC Cyber Patriot Team (Cadets Adam Melton, Steven Gorter, Sandy Davis, Cody Sea, Jacob Irish, and Kyle Corbin) competed in the 2010 National Cyber Patriot Competition, one of the largest national computer security competitions ever held. Under the mentorship of Walt Corbin, the cadets made it to round three of a five-level competition.p MSgt Michael W. Jensen, East High AFJROTC Unit NC-934 Assistant Instructor, was awarded an Air Force Junior ROTC “Outstanding Instructor Award with Merit” for the Academic Year 2010-11 by the Air Education and Training Command’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.p Hendersonville High students Scott Ashcraft and Trestan Peck were selected for the N.C. All State Honors Band. p The Hendersonville High Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band earned superior ratings and Best in Class awards at Festival Disney. The Jazz Band earned a Silver Mickey and the Symphonic Band earned the Gold Mickey Award (given to the most outstanding ensemble of the festival). Cameron Hahn received the Mickey Soloist award. Fran Shelton is the Band Director.p The North Henderson High Band earned a superior and was the most awarded band at the National Adjudicators Invitational held in Chicago.
