iZone360 Component Partner Catalog For 2012/2013 School Year April 16th, 2012, V1

2

About this Catalog

This catalog provides an overview of iZone360 Component Partner Options for the 2012/2013 School Year.

The purpose of this catalog is to provide a general understanding of who Component Partner organizations

and schools are, what services they provide or will provide within the iZone, and what specific service

offerings schools can request from partners. This catalog should serve as an initial introduction to your

options, and you should be sure to engage in conversations with Component Partners throughout the spring.

What are Component Partners?

Component Partners are specialists in elements of the iZone Framework, helping schools solve specific

challenges in implementing a highly personalized model. Component Partners support you during

implementation; they help you implement solutions to specific problems of practice or capacity around

personalized learning. Their roles include:

Helping advance your school’s overall design for personalized learning by helping you implement a

specific solution, program, or product

Coordinating with schools, iCoaches and Model Design Partners to integrate solutions or tools within

schools’ implementation plan

Supporting your school as you implement your solution and adjust course as needed

Building capacity at the school to continue implementing some or all of this solution on their own,

and/or to implement the solution more easily and effectively over time

How can I request Component Partner services?

Schools can request one intensive Component Partnership or two targeted Component Partnerships.

Component Partner requests must be aligned to the iZone Framework and your schools’ Implementation

Goals. In addition, all schools must submit their Implementation Goals in order to request Component

Partners. Component Partner requests are an optional resource. You can choose to request Component

Partners for the 2012/2013 school year in one of three rounds, depending on what makes the most sense

considering your school’s implementation plans. Component Partner Requests can only be made via the

iZone360 Planning Portal by the following deadlines which influence when work with this partner can begin:

May 15 (partnership begins in mid-summer)

August 15 (partnership begins in fall)

3

Table 1: TARGETED and INTENSIVE Partner Offerings

October 15 (partnership begins in 2013)

Some Component Partners can only be requested by certain deadlines, given when they are able to start

work. Please check the bottom of each Component Partner page to determine their request deadline. If your

Model Design Partner offers Component Partner services in this catalog, you do not need to request this

support via the Component Partner request process. Instead, you will have an opportunity later this year to

decide the kind of Model Design Partner support you receive in 2012-13, which could include this kind of

service.

Who is in the Component Partner Catalog?

iZone360 has scanned for and vetted a

number of high-quality, ambitious

Component Partner solutions to advance

schools’ work. Schools will be able to

request either one or two Component

Partner services. Services are listed in

categories, depending on the time

intensity, cost to iZone, and type of service

offered. You may choose either one

INTENSIVE Component Partner Service or

two TARGETED Component Partner

Services. Table 1 provides a list of which

partners offer INTENSIVE services and

which partners offer TARGETED services. In

some cases, partners offer a service with

both TARGETED and INTENSIVE options.

Each Component Partner in this catalog

offers services that are aligned to one or

multiple principles of the iZone

Framework. You can use the cog symbol

on in the top left hand corner of each partner’s page to determine which areas of the iZone Framework a

Component Partner addresses. Framework areas are represented as follows:

Next Generation Curriculum and Assessment

Personalized Learning Plans and Progress

New Student and Staff Roles

Flexible and Real-World Learning Environments

For a comprehensive list of all Component Partner Services, refer to pages 19 through 22 of this catalog.

Why do some pages list schools as Component Partners or have missing information? In efforts to ensure that Component Partner offerings meet a wide range of school needs, the iZone continues to build a comprehensive portfolio of partner services. iZone360 schools with demonstrated experience and effectiveness in implementing practices around an area of the iZone Framework have been approved as Component Partners, and allow schools to request partnerships grounded in a school’s implementation. Services from these partners can be requested via the iZone360 Planning Portal as well. In addition, we will continue to update this catalog as we add Component Partners to our portfolio. The next catalog will be released via the iZone360 Planning Portal on April 27 and will include additional partner services. We have worked to find highly aligned, effective organizations that can support this work, but if there is an organization that you believe could be a potential Component Partner, please discuss with your iCoach or contact Cynthia Warner ([email protected]). How can I learn more about Component Partners? In addition to reading through this catalog and browsing the Component Partner websites listed herein, you can learn about Component Partners through:

Component Partner Meet-Ups: These events are opportunities for schools to speak with Component Partners about their services and to discuss the school’s iZone goals that require support. The first Component Partner Meet-Up will be held on Friday, April 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 28-11 Queens Plaza North. Two additional Meet-Ups are tentatively scheduled for May 1st, and July 10th, 2012. More information about these events will follow shortly.

Outreach to Prospective Partners: Schools are encouraged to reach out directly to Component Partners to discuss their service offering in more detail. Contact information for each partner organization or school is listed at the top of each partner’s page, just below the organization or school’s name. Feel free to contact partners with questions or comments about their services.

Component Partner Options For 2012/2013 School Year

Envision Learning Partners Contact: Erika Nielsen Andrew; [email protected]; 510.451.2415

About ELP

Envision Learning Partners (ELP) is the consulting and training division of Envision Schools. The mission of Envision Schools and ELP is to transform the lives of students – especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college – by preparing them for success in college and in life. Envision Schools was founded in 2002 on a simple idea: the achievement gap reflects a systemic failure to understand how youth learn, what motivates them to learn, and what they need in order to learn well. Our answer is to design schools that redefine what it means to succeed. We employ an innovative model that emphasizes project-based learning, 21st Century learning, real-world experience in workplaces, and a uniquely rigorous assessment system.

Learn more at www.envisionlearning.org.

+

Within the iZone

Within the iZone, ELP will work with schools to support the development of next generation curriculum and assessment. ELP has developed and implemented a system of student assessment that ensures students are prepared for college and career success – and in so doing, acts as a leverage point for transforming what and how students learn. ELP will bring this assessment approach -- called the College and Career Ready Student Assessment System -- to its work in the iZone. This assessment system transforms teachers’ instructional practices and the school’s learning culture. ELP provides professional development, onsite coaching, and, when offsite, can conduct coaching virtually, problem solve, and offer feedback. ELP partners with Stanford University and the digital platform ShowEvidence, which supports reliable scoring.

About Eskolta

Eskolta is a consulting, evaluation, and design firm that helps educators reinvent schools by developing student-centered systems and structures and focusing on meaningful learning. Eskolta works with schools, school districts, and nonprofit agencies to help leaders and teachers create personalized report cards, more sophisticated grading and assessment systems, flexible schedules and course sequences, thoughtful data analysis, and documentation and design of school processes, and has a particular expertise in drop-out prevention, with the view that for students who struggle in traditional urban secondary schools, new structures must be developed that will work for them. Learn more at www.eskolta.com

+

Within the iZone

Within the iZone, Eskolta works with schools to tackle challenges in enabling students to have personalized plans, pathways, and progress. These challenges start with the fact that adults often do not have clear information to know which students are off track and to look for patterns in this problem. Even when they do have this data available, they face myriad other challenges: lack of clear paths and indicators for students to know how they are progressing down the path to graduation, lack of flexible structures to accommodate students whose path is atypical, and lack of mechanisms for frequent supportive feedback to students as they move down that path.

Schools can request:

West Side Collaborative Contact: Jeanne Rotunda, Principal, [email protected]

+

About WSC: West Side Collaborative MS250 (WSC) is a middle school in Manhattan’s District 3. Learn more at www.wscnyc.org. Student Led Conferences: Our learning community was interested in

fostering student independence, building student ownership over their

own learning and providing parents and their children with a common

vocabulary to talk about the academic life of the child. Exploring why we

assess students and how we communicate student achievement in

relation to standards and competencies is the first step in the transition

to SLC’s . We will share how to build staff understanding around this

new practice by developing a roadmap for implementation that

incorporates teacher, student and parent goals and identify the

organizational tools that need to be developed to help support this new

process and provide for a successful implementation.

Immersion Week: Our learning community was interested in fostering

student engagement and excitement around topics in science, digital

ethics, teen issues and arts infused projects. We were also interested in

increasing time allotted in our yearly schedule for specific subjects.

Immersion Weeks became a way to address these needs. We will share

how a school can start to identify what unmet curricular or

social/emotional needs your students have and envision how an

Immersion Week might be designed to address those needs. WSC will

support your school team in the brainstorming process, help you in

anticipating potential obstacles, create a timeline for introducing this

concept to students through the initial launch of the Immersion Week,

support you in identifying teacher leaders to develop the units, explore

team teaching benefits and provide you with a template for your unit

planning process. Model organizational supports such as how to

program staff, provide students with choice, communicate the new

initiative with students and parents and allocate resources will be

shared.

Request support from West Side Collaborative via the iZone360 Planning Portal on May 15th, August 15th or October 15th.

Schools can request:

Option A: Student Led Conferences
