VII. BIBLIOGRAPHY, QUOTATIONS, ETC.

There are many resources available for those who aspire to retreat leadership. Not only will you want to explore some of these resources, many retreatants will have a thirst created within them and this bibliography will provide a place to begin to assuage that thirst. (It is usually included as a part of the booklet given to each retreatant.) We have included in this revision of the handbook a listing of books oriented to family devotions and related matters. These lists are not exhaustive. You may well have other resources which have been inspirational to you.

Many penetrating things have been said and written about silence and solitude and communion with God, and other aspects of retreat. It would be beyond the scope of this handbook to reproduce more than a few of them. Those contained herein have been meaningful to some and may be of help to you.

Similarly, there is much in Scripture that speaks to prayer. Some of the many references to prayer are reproduced herein. It is our position that all Scripture should be read in its context; therefore we urge that you do that with verses quoted herewith; in some instances you will have to check context for background in order to fully appreciate the circumstances. These were researched from the New Topical Textbook published by Revell. Not all its references are reproduced. An effort has been made to eliminate duplicates. Note that the headings used are from the New Topical Textbook. With particular reference to the heading entitled "Private Prayer", it is our position that all prayer is corporate prayer, regardless of whether prayed aloud or silently, by oneself or in a group.

Biblical BENEDICTIONS AND BLESSINGS have been included in this revision of the manual as ready reference and guide for appropriate retreat closings.

In the years since this handbook last was updated there have been countless numbers of books, records, tapes, CD’s, etc., pertaining to, or aiding, the niceties of learning to become present to the presence of God. There has been no attempt to add to the listings herein reproduced; all are valid and useful today; many of these are classics, and all are recommended for your edification and illumination. (Ed’s note.)

INTERCESSORY PRAYER

Lk 22:31,32 “Simon, Simon, Satan demanded to have you that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethern.”

Lk 22:34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Jn 17:9-24 “I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine; all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee, Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world has hated me because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world I do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth. As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they may be consecrated in truth."I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, are in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom thou has given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy love for me before the foundation of the world.”

I Tim 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all men.

Ja 5:14,16 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another that you may be healed.

I Tim 2:2 . . .for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectable in every way.

II Cor 1:11 You also must help us by prayer so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us in answer to many prayers.

Phil 1:19 Yes, and I shall rejoice. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance.

Ps 122:6, 7 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they prosper who love you! Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers!”

Is 62:6, 7 Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he established Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.

Eph 6:18 Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplications for all the saints.

Gen 24:12-14 And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, grant me success today, I pray thee, and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let the maiden to whom I shall say, ‘Pray let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels,’ — let her be the one whom thou has appointed for thy servant Isaac. By this I shall know that thou hast shown steadfast love to my master.”

Lk 7: 2, 3 Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him. who was sick and at the point of death. When he heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his slave.

Rom 10:1 Brethern, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

Mt 5:44 But I say to you, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Jer 29:7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Num 12:13 And Moses cried to the Lord, “Heal her, O God, I beseech thee.”

II Tim 4:16 At my first defense no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!

Num 11:1, 2 And the people complained in the hearing of the Lord about their misfortunes; and when the Lord heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. Then the people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire abated.

Num 14:13 But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them,. . . Pardon the iniquity of this people., I pray thee, according to the greatness of thy steadfast love, and according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

Eph 1:16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

Eph 3:14-19 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpassed knowledge that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Phil 1:3, 4 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy.

Ja 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effect.

I Jn 5:16, 17 If anyone sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin,. but there is sin which is not mortal.

Job 42:10 And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Jer 7:13-16 And now, because you have done all these things, says the Lord, and when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and when I called you, you did not answer, therefore I will do to the house which is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place which I give to you and your fathers, as I did to Shiloh And I will cast you out of my sight, as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of Ephraim "As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I do not hear you. . .”

Jer 14:10, 11 Thus says the Lord concerning this people: “They have loved to wander thus, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the Lord does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.” The Lord said to me, “Do not pray for the welfare of this people”

I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
