April From the Rector A WEEK SET APART Dear Brothers and Sisters- I am writing this a few days before I will be entering the tomb of CSP-Sacramento (New Folsom prison) where for four days I will journey with 48 men, all of whom will reflect back to me the face of the risen Christ. At the end of this Kairos weekend, when that space is now seen not as a tomb, but rather, as a place where the love of the risen Christ may be found, my prayer is that together we will have discovered what I hope you and I will also discover later this month when we journey together through Holy Week. CHRIST HAS DIED CHRIST IS RISEN CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN This is the essence of our faith. It is why we gather together to do what we do. Through our worship together, our fellowship together, our work together we discover the transforming love of Jesus Christ so that we may share it not only with ourselves, but with our friends, with our neighbors, with our community and with the world. We gather this Holy Week, this week set apart, and we remind ourselves of the story so that we might be filled with the Holy Spirit, and led by the Spirit to listen, listen, love, love. Yes, that is the motto of the Kairos program. It is etched on the heart of everyone who participates in this ministry. A WEEK SET APART

Dear Brothers and Sisters- I am writing this a few days before I will be entering the tomb of CSP-Sacramento (New Folsom prison) wherefor four days I will journey with 48 men, all of whom will reflect back to me the face of the risen Christ. At theend of this Kairos weekend, when that space is now seen not as a tomb, but rather, as a place where the loveof the risen Christ may be found, my prayer is that together we will have discovered what I hope you and I willalso discover later this month when we journey together through Holy Week.

CHRIST HAS DIEDCHRIST IS RISEN

CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN

This is the essence of our faith. It is why we gather together to do what we do. Through our worship together, our fellowship together, our work together we discover the transforming love of Jesus Christ so that we mayshare it not only with ourselves, but with our friends, with our neighbors, with our community and with the world. We gather this Holy Week, this week set apart, and we remind ourselves of the story so that we might be filledwith the Holy Spirit, and led by the Spirit to listen, listen, love, love. Yes, that is the motto of the Kairos program. It is etched on the heart of everyone who participates in this ministry. It is my fervent hope and prayer that thisHoly Week, all of us will open our hearts and etch this motto there as well.

There are many services and ways in which you can join in this journey during Holy Week. They are listedelsewhere in this newsletter. I so fervently hope that you will take advantage of them. For it is in community thatwe best come to know the love of Christ, a love we experience because of our shared worship and fellowship. We are an Easter people living in the season of Advent. We await the return of Christ. But it is in Holy Weekthat we intentionally choose to put away all the things that distract us so that we may again remember thisparadoxical journey that Our Lord has taken, turning the world upside down, so that it becomes right side up. Itis a journey that takes us through death to eternal life. It is a blessed journey, one in which I hope you will joinas together we set this sacred week apart. May the blessing of God be with you, and may you continue to experience and share the Easter joy that ispresent and also awaits each of us, each and every day of your eternal life. Listen, Listen, Love, Love, In Christ,Fr. Cliff (PS-Since I wrote this, but before it was published I have learned that the Kairos weekend has been postponed. This is another reminder that it is God who is in charge, and has done what it is impossible for us to doourselves. A thought worth pondering as we approach this week we set apart.)

Deacon's Dialogue - April Fools' Day If you are like me you may have wondered what is April Fools' Day allabout.Well, let me tell you what I have discovered.... What does April Fools' Day celebrate?

April Fools' Day is a fun day to play practical jokes. History of April Fools' Day:April Fools' Day may have come from a few different events in history.

One theory suggests that the day comes from the change in thecalendar in Europe from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This moved the New Year from Spring (around April 1st) to January1st. When people forgot and still celebrated the New Year in April, other people made fun of them.

People liked to play practical jokes all the way back to Ancient Romantimes, especially during the Spring festivals. The celebration of All

Fools' Day started in the Middle Ages. It was generally celebrated on March 25th throughout much of Europeup until the 1800s.

Fun Facts about April Fools' Day

The day is called Poisson d'Avril in France. This means April Fish. Kids tape a paper fish on their friends'backs and yell out "Poisson d'Avril" when their friends finally find it.In England they use other words for fool such as "noddy" or "gobby".The codename for one of the spies who helped to capture Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was named AprilFool. In Scotland they call the day "Hunting the Gowk".In Portugal they celebrate by throwing flour in their friends' faces.

Now I don't know about you, but I never much liked participating in April Foolery because most of the time I wasthe receiver of the prank. While this history is quite interesting I would much rather focus on Easter and

Page 3: ñññññññIURP6W -RKQV *RRG1HZVñIn Scotland they call the day "Hunting the Gowk". In Portugal they celebrate by throwing flour in their friends' faces. Now I don't know about

celebrating the Risen Lord. Still, I began to wonder what kind of April Fools prank Jesus would have played ifhe had participated in this strange custom? Then it dawned on me, Jesus performed the greatest prank in history. Jesus died and was resurrected threedays later, and this my brothers and sisters was the ultimate prank on the devil, and the greatest gift He evergave us. May your April be blessed and your Easter be holy. While we might entertain the idea of April Foolery, I think itis best left to the master prankster himself. The Lord is Risen Indeed! Allelujah! Faithfully yours in Christ,Deacon Babs

Senior Warden's Article When I was a child, Easter always felt special. My family did not regularly attend

church, but there were always Easter eggs and a big family dinner. I didn't quite understand what was special, but the air seemed fresher, the light seemed softer

somehow and there was chocolate and Easter baskets. It was all good.

As an adult with many decades of life experience, the lenten season, Holy Week and Easter are even more special to me. It is the time of year I reflect on my

successes and weaknesses, remember the sufferings and the resurrection of our Lord and celebrate being a Christian and Episcopal at this moment in time.

St. John's is in good shape physically and improving all the time. The many

ministries we support as a congregation continue to do amazing work. We continue to attract new members who bring talents and gifts to help us to

experience and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ with each other and with those outside of the walls of our church building.

Being active and involved at church, family and social commitments, caring for

personal relationships, there are many things that are important to all of us. However, each time I pause and center myself, I face one truth, that it is my continuing conversation with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that is really the

center of my life. My journey is towards God and I hope that I will end that journey in Gods hands.

As each of us complete our lenten season, I pray that we each set aside all of the

business of our lives and take a moment to focus on the reality and joy of Easter. Why do we attend church if it is not to worship the Lord and to support and create space for others to grow spiritually. May your Easter be warm, loving and

peaceful, and may your own journey end in Gods hands.

Bob Pritchard

Life, that in me hath rest As I Undying Life, have power in thee

Vain are the thousand creeds

That move men's hearts, unutterably vain, Worthless as withered weeds

Or idlest froth amid the boundless main

To waken doubt in one Holding so fast by thy infinity

So surely anchored on The steadfast rock of Immortality

With wide-embracing love

Thy spirit animates eternal years Pervades and broods above

Changes, sustains, dissolves, creates and rears

Though Earth and moon were gone And suns and universes ceased to be

And though wert left alone Every Existence would exist in thee

There is not room for Death

Nor atom that his might could render void Since thou art Being and Breath

And what thou art may never be destroyed

Lenten Movie Night-Babette's Feast Please join us for the final night of our Lenten Movie Series. We will be showingBabette's Feast on Friday, April 12th at 6:30 pm. In a remote 19th-century Danish village, two sisters lead a rigid life centered aroundtheir father, the local minister, and their church. Both had opportunities to leave thevillage: one could have married a young army officer and the other, a French operasinger. Their father objected in each case, and they spent their lives caring for him. Many years later - their father is now deceased - they take in French refugee,Babette Hersant, who agrees to work as their servant. After winning the lottery,Babette wants to repay the sisters for their kindness and offers to cook a Frenchmeal for them and their friends on the 100th anniversary of their father's

birth. It proves to be an eye-opening experience for everyone. Admission is free and so is the pizza, popcorn and soda!

Please join us.

Ministry Moment

CELEBRATION OF LIFE MINISTRY

At the death of a loved one the church celebrates the life they lived. Rather than using the term 'funeral',which leads us to think of crying and weeping, we have chosen to "celebrate that person" and the way in whichthey touched our lives. We also celebrate their new life with Christ for they have not gone away but moved intotheir new relationship with Jesus. The parish responds by providing food items like salads, deviled eggs, desserts, fruit, etc. for the receptionafter the service. This is a gift to the family who during this time are frequently exhausted and somewhat fragile. It is one less detail they have to see to. In our parish we try to honor the family's thoughts about this reception with favorite foods, colors, andflowers. The gift of your food to this ministry keeps the costs down and the quality up, especially if you pray forthe family while preparing your dish. This is a free gift to the family by the parish. You don't have to know the deceased to offer your gift of helpin this ministry, just know that many guests to these celebrations of life are deeply touched by your generosityas are the families.
