What is SIS?

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

• 1990s: Idea of centralized database suggested to store all species data for IUCN and SSC publications, including the IUCN Red List (“Species Information System”). Not much progress, until…

• 2001: Global Amphibian Assessment began & required a practical database for workshops & data-storage

Page 4: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

Data Entry Module (DEM)

• Access database• Stand-alone database for storage

of individual datasets• Very careful data management

required• Easy confusion between different

versions of datasets• Much manual labour to transfer

data to IUCN Red List• Temporary tool until SIS fully

developed

Page 5: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

SIS developed & used for the 2008 Red List update

• XML based application (not a database)

• Online system• Centralized data storage• Fully compatible with

IUCN Red List (SIS used for web site updates)

• Easier to manage while working online

• Still some work to complete on SIS, but it is ready to use now.

Page 6: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

• Data/information management tool for producing the IUCN Red List

• Standardizes assessments

• Transparency

• Facilitate evaluation and consistency checking

• Source code is open-source and free - can be used to produce national and regional Red List assessments

Getting started in SIS

Page 10: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

SIS does not work very well through Internet Explorer (IE is not standards compliant).

The best internet browsers to use for SIS are:

– Mozilla Firefox

– Google Chrome

– Apple Safari

All of these browsers are free to download from the internet.

System Requirements

Page 11: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

The different versions of SIS (offline, live online, test online) are very similar:

Online live SIS

Online test SIS

It is useful to create different background colour settings for each version.

Use the Username and Password given to you at the start of the workshop to login to the test site.

This account will work on the TEST SIS site only. Please use the TEST SIS to practice using SIS before starting to use the LIVE SIS.

At some point after the workshop, Specialist Group participants will be sent a personal user account for the LIVE SIS site to begin entering information for assessments destined for the IUCN Red List.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

PLEASE DO NOT SHARE YOUR PASSWORD FOR THE LIVE SIS

Each user will be given permissions for carrying out specific tasks in SIS – it is important that we know who is editing information in SIS and that users are trained

in how to use the system.

Each SIS user will be supplied with a Username and Password specific to that person.

User accounts are tailored for each user:

– Only the SIS managers and the Red List Unit staff will have full access to all of the data in SIS.

– Users can edit and add assessments only to those taxa that they are working on (this may be an entire taxonomic group, or only a subset of taxa within that group or specific taxa from different groups).

– Taxonomic information in SIS will be strictly controlled – currently only a few people within the Red List Unit have permission to alter taxonomy.

Information about the assessment itself is recorded in this page.

The date the assessment was carried out should be entered here. The calendar icon on the right hand side can be used to select the appropriate date

The assessor(s) name(s) should be entered into this field in the following format:

Smith, K.M. & Jones, A.D.

Note that the “Add from Working Set” function does not work yet.

When the assessments are peer-reviewed, this box should then be checked and names of the evaluators/reviewers added into evaluators field below.

Please ignore the Consistency Check section for now – currently this is used by the Red List Unit to indicate that the assessment is ready for publication.

People who have not been directly involved in the assessment as assessors or reviewers, but who have provided information can be recorded here as “contributors”.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

Assessment data browser (Category & Criteria generator)

The Red List assessment can be entered manually.

But, SIS also has an in-built expert system, which automatically assigns an appropriate category based on the information entered elsewhere in SIS.

This expert system will not work if the data fields elsewhere in the assessment have not been completed.

Page 85: IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) The IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) Lucy Harrison IUCN Shark Specialist Group Programme Officer.

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

In this example, when the “Revert to calculated” Red List assessment is viewed, the recommended category (DD) does not match the manually selected category (CR A2ad).

There are three possible explanations for this:

1. The data fields have not been completed, therefore the expert system has nothing to use in its calculations.

2. The wrong information has been entered into the data fields, therefore the expert system has given an incorrect assessment – the assessor should check the information entered into the data fields.

3. The assessor has misunderstood or misapplied the Red List criteria, therefore the manual assessment is incorrect.
