WELCOME FROM INTERNATIONAL TRIATHLON UNION PRESIDENT AND IOC MEMBER MARISOL CASADO

Greetings and welcome to the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Chicago, I’m thrilled to welcome Chicago to the World Triathlon Series. Chicago is the third U.S. city to welcome a WTS race, with Washington, D.C., having hosted a race in the inaugural season of the WTS in 2009. San Diego also welcomed com-petitors to its shores the last two years.

Chicago has a rich tradition of triathlon, as it is home to one of the largest triathlon clubs in the country. More than 75,000 spectators are expected to witness the ex-citement and drama of age-group and professional triathlon on June 27-29 in one of the world’s most scenic and iconic venues. What’s not to look forward to?

We’ve seen some thrilling WTS racing here in the U.S. Last year in San Diego we saw Gwen Jorgensen become the first American woman to win an WTS event and she did it on home soil. Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee from Great Britain also treated the crowds to his winning ways when he took gold with a last ditch final sprint to the finish line. I have no doubt we will again see epic racing this weekend. After all, the U.S. is the birthplace of our great sport.

I’d like to offer a warm welcome to the age-group athletes who also get their chance to make history in Chicago, and assure all of you, athletes, volunteers, organizers, media and supporters, that we are working hard to grow the sport of triathlon.

I would like to thank USA Triathlon, the Local Organizing Committee, the Chicago Sports Commission, and the City of Chicago for helping to put this weekend together.

Overall, enjoy the beautiful city of Chicago and the spectacle of ITU triathlon. Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Marisol CasadoPresident, International Triathlon UnionIOC Member

WELCOME FROM USA TRIATHLON CEO ROB URBACH

Dear Athletes,

On behalf of USA Triathlon, I’d like to welcome you to the inau-gural ITU World Triathlon Chicago. I hope that you enjoy rac-ing in one of the most endurance-friendly cities in the United States. Lake Michigan, Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain are just a few of the iconic landmarks you will see during your race.

In addition to enjoying your own race experience, I hope you take the time to watch the world’s top Olympic-distance athletes competing this weekend. These athletes are seeking valuable qualifying points on the Road to Rio, and Chicago is an important step in that journey this year and next year when we host the Grand Final and World Championships. In 2014, American elites will also be competing for a USA Triathlon elite national title. Don’t miss the thrills of draft-legal triathlon racing at its highest level. The women start at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the men compete at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The weekend will begin with the elite ITU World Paratriathlon event, presented by local paratriathlon club Dare2tri, with 60 paratriathletes competing on a sprint-distance course. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, and this is a great time to witness these inspirational athletes as we approach the sport’s Paralympic debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

In coordination with many others, the USA Triathlon staff has worked diligently for months to make sure you enjoy a top-notch race experience, and events such as this one would not be possible without the backing of the Chicagoland community and its infrastructure.

USA Triathlon would like to thank the many individuals and groups in the community and elsewhere who helped to make this event possible: the Chicago Sports Commission, the City of Chicago, Lagardère Unlimited and the International Triathlon Union.

ITU World Triathlon Chicago corporate partners and local sponsors also have worked hard to make this event a showcase for the sport. We are grateful for their support, and their dedication to multisport helps make international events such as this a reality.

Thank you for your commitment to our sport and best wishes for a successful and memorable race.

Sincerely,

Rob UrbachUSA Triathlon CEO

12 ITU WORLD TRIATHLON CHICAGO

Bike Check-inMandatory bike check-in for age-groupers competing in 2014 ITU World Triathlon Chicago will be on Saturday, June 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. All bikes for Olym-pic-Distance and Sprint-Distance must be racked at this time.

Please note: No bags can be left in transition. The security of bags and personal items is the responsibility of the athletes, not the race organizer.

Only those items that you will need for the event will be able to be placed at your rack position on RACE Morning. Extra gear may be dropped in the clear bag you receive at packet pick-up and dropped off in the assigned tent near the packet pick-up location. Do NOT leave any bags unattended at the venue!!

Do not leave bottles, helmets, etc, on your bike overnight. You may bring those items with you on race morning.

Bike Course In true ITU style, the age-group bike course is designed as a 10km loop course. Friends and family will be able to see you, support you and cheer for you several times as you pass them on the bike course. If you are participating in the Olympic-distance, you will ride 4 laps of the course. If you are participating in the Sprint-distance, you will ride 2 laps. It is your responsibility as an athlete to count your laps and ensure that you are riding the full bike course distance required for your race.

The age-group bike course starts on S. Columbus Drive with athletes heading north past the main venue located at Buckingham Fountain. At the intersection of N. Colum-bus Drive and Lower Wacker Drive, athletes will make a left turn onto Lower Wacker Drive. Athletes will head west on Lower Wacker Drive until they get to the turnaround point where they will make a U-turn and head back east. At the intersection of Lower Wacker Drive and N. Columbus Drive, athletes will make a right onto N. Columbus Drive heading back into Grant Park. After 0.55 miles, athletes will turn right onto E. Congress Parkway. At the end of E Congress Parkway, athletes will make a wide, sweeping U-turn heading back towards S. Columbus Drive. At S. Columbus Drive, athletes turn right and head back south for 0.5 miles where they will make a U-turn and start a new lap. If finished with the bike course distance, athletes will head into transition at this point.

When you start a new lap, please be mindful of athletes merging onto the course that are just starting their bike leg of the race. Always follow the direction provided by race staff, course marshals and volunteers. Pay close attention to the posted on-course signage – it has been planned out and created to provide a safe racing environment and give you visual cues. Ultimately you are responsible for the course though so please study the maps before race day.

The bike course is located on wide roads that provide sufficient space per athlete and that allow for sweeping U-turns. Please be courteous to other athletes on the course!A portion of the bike course takes place on Lower Wacker Drive which is both a par-tial and a enclosed tunnel. Permanently installed artificial lighting on that area of the course provides good visibility.

Corporate ChallengeIndividual teams are made up of three participants, including any male/female/coed in both the Sprint and Olympic-distance. For example, three females, or two males and one female, or two females and one male, etc., each participating in one leg of the race – swim, bike, or run. All relay team members must check in at packet get to pick up their race packet. (Relay members CAN NOT pick up race packets for their teammates) A relay team will be assigned one bib number: the swimmer will pick up the swim cap and timing chip, the biker then will pick up the bike number and helmet stickers, and the runner will pick up the bib number. Relay teams will transfer the tim-ing chip and ankle strap by their assigned bike rack. (The timing chip is the “baton”). All hand offs of the chip MUST be done in the transition area. For example. The swim-mer is responsible for the short run to the transition area after he/she exits the wa-ter. Team members must be employees of the company they are racing for (part-time, full-time, or spouse of employee); must be able to verify employment if requested.

For a team to be scored, all team members have to complete their leg of the race

and pass on the timing chip to the next team member. The team will only be scored if the runner crosses the finish line. Each relay participant will receive a finisher medal

and their team members can pick up their medals in the Transition Area. There is one award each for the fastest Corporate Challenge team for Sprint and Olympic-distance.

Each team member has to pick up his/her own race packet at the same time.

Course Cut-Off TimesBike course cut-off is at 2:15 p.m. for both distances. If you have not completed the bike course by then, you will be taken off the road and will be listed as DNF in the results.

Run course cut-off is at 3:15 p.m. If you have not crossed the finish line by then, you will be taken off the course and will be listed as DNF in the results.

Course talks will only be held if it does not rain.

If you cannot make the course talk, you can watch and listen to the pre-race briefing which will be available as a recorded webinar posted on the event website http://chicago.triathlon.org/ in the next few days.

PC OpenThe ITU Chicago World Triathlon Weekend is excited to include a PC Open race. The Physically Challenged (PC) Open race is a wave of the Age-group Sprint race that is open to any and all Paratriathletes wanting to participate. Not all athletes with ADA defined disabilities fit into a Paratriathlon medical classification or are able to follow the strict equipment usage rules of Paratriathlon. Accordingly, USA Triath-lon offers a PC Open Division as an accommodation for those persons who wish to participate in a sanctioned event but who will not follow some Paratriathlon rules. Participation in the PC Open Division is available to athletes with a medically verified physical, visual, or neurological impairment that substantially limits one or more ma-jor life activities. As defined in the Paratriathlon rules, athletes with miscellaneous conditions such as, but not limited to, intolerance to temperature extremes, organ transplants, joint replacements (endoprosthetics), kidney dialysis, hearing impairments, and or cognitive impairment are not eligible for the PC Open Division. Formal Paratriathlon classification into approved categories is not required. They are also entitled to have a personal handler who can assist them with various tasks in transition and they are provided assistance getting into and out of the water. Con-duct and standards for handlers and guides shall remain as defined in the Paratri-athlon rules.

These athletes will complete the same Sprint-distance race on the same course as the able bodied age-groupers participating in the sprint race.

Adaptive equipment used in the PC Open Division must conform to the equipment specifications listed in the Paratriathlon Rule Modifications or in Article 5.11 of the Competitive Rules with the following exceptions:

•Participantswithanydisabilitythatmayaffectbalancemaychoosetouse stabilizer wheels on the bicycle. The BIKE USA, Inc. Stabilizer Wheel Kit is an adult training wheel kit and it has been approved for use. For information and pictures of the product, see http://www.stabilizerwheels.com/ •Recumbentstyletricyclesareallowed.

•Hand-cyclesthatdonotmeettheParatriathlonmeasurementrestrictions for length, wheel size, seat angle, and have no safety bars are allowed

PC Open athletes may use any of the allowed adaptive equipment in combinations that are not permitted in Paratriathlon. Any request to use adaptive equipment not

defined in the Paratriathlon Rules or in the exceptions above must be submitted to USA Triathlon at least 14 days in advance of the event.

Conduct of athletes in competition, other than equipment restrictions, shall be governed by the Paratriathlon Rules and the USAT Competitive Rules, which can be referenced at http://www.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/rulebook.aspx#Paratri-athlon

Personal Communication PlansWe strongly recommend that each athlete should put a post-race communication plan into place with family and friends BEFORE leaving for the race. Please inform your friends and family of your start time and expected finish time so they know when to expect you near the finish line.

Determine a clear meeting point with friends and family for after the race as it can be difficult to locate friends and family with thousands of athletes and excited specta-tors in the event area.

Post-Race AreaThe age-group recovery area is located in the South Rose Garden in Grant Park. Af-ter crossing the finish line, athletes will be directed to head south into the age-group recovery area.

Race partner Herbalife will be handing out shakes made with the Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength product which provides a blend of amino acids, whey and casein to help rebuild muscle over a multi-hour period. If you would like to learn more about this product, please go to http://catalog.herbalife.com/Catalog/en-US/Energy-Fitness/Herbal-ife24/Herbalife24-Rebuild-Strength

The recovery area will also have post-race food such as bagels and fruit for age-group athletes.

Staff from race partner Illinois Bone & Joint Institute will be on hand to provide post-race massage and demonstrate recovery techniques such as foam rolling and proper stretching. They will also be availableto assess your physical therapy needs.

The swim start area for the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Chicago age-group races is located east of Buckingham Fountain at Queen’s Landing. After athletes have checked in at transition on race morning, they are being asked to walk north on the sidewalk along Lake Shore Drive and cross to the swim start at Buckingham Foun-tain.

Sprint athletes: preferred access into the venue after the start of the Olympic-dis-tance race is via E Jackson Blvd, which is located north of Buckingham Fountain.

The finish line, packet pick-up, gear check and the event expo are located at Buckingham Fountain which is located in Grant Park.

Rules Briefing/Competitive RulesThe pre-race rules briefing will be a recorded webinar posted on http://chicago.triathlon.org/ during race week.

RelaysEach relay is a team of three with each team member racing one leg of the race – swim, bike, run. There are three categories of relays: all male, all female and mixed (any combination). Awards will be handed out to the three fastest teams from each category.

Page 27: ITU World Triathlon Chicago Event Program

ITU WORLD TRIATHLON CHICAGO 27

Sprint-distance relays will race as part of the Sprint-distance race with a non-drafting 750m swim, a 20km bike and 5km run. Olympic-distance relays will race as part of the Olympic-distance race with a non-drafting 1,500m swim, a 40km bike and 10km run.

Individual teams are made up of three participants, each participating in one leg of the race – swim, bike, or run. A relay team will be assigned one bib number: the swimmer will pick up the swim cap and timing chip, the biker then will pick up the bike number and helmet stickers, and the runner will pick up the bib number. Relay teams will transfer the timing chip and ankle strap by their assigned bike rack. (The timing chip is the “baton”). All hand offs of the chip MUST be done in the transition area. For example. The swimmer is responsible for the short run to the transition area after he/she exits the water.

For a team to be scored, all team members have to complete their leg of the race and pass on the timing chip to the next team member. The team will only be scored if the runner crosses the finish line. Each relay participant will receive a finisher medal and their team members can pick up their medals in the Transition Area. Each team member has to pick up his/her own race packet up. There are no

During the event, a ‘relay pen’ will be utilized within the Age-group transition area. When a relay team member is waiting in transition area for their team mates they must remain within the transition area and cannot exit the area until their teammate enters. This is to ensure each relay team competes in a fair transition area.

ResultsResults will be posted near the age-group post-race recovery area. Please note: Athletes will have 60 minutes after the completion of their race to protest any penalties. Any protests must be made to the race officials from USA.

Run CourseThe run course – much like the bike course – is based on a lap format. Like the elites, age-group athletes will pass through the event stadium located at Bucking-ham Fountain several times before crossing the finish line.

Olympic-distance athletes will pass through the stadium three times before finishing on their fourth lap. Sprint-distance athletes will pass through the stadium twice be-fore finishing on their third lap. It is your responsibilities as an athlete to count your laps and ensure that you are riding the full bike course distance required for your race.

The run course starts at Arvey Field with athletes heading out of transition running north on the path parallel to Lower Hutchinson Field. Leaving the park at Balbo Avenue, athletes will merge to the left onto S. Columbus Drive running north to the turnaround point just before E. Jackson Drive. Then athletes will make a left onto the fountain table top where they will circle Buckingham Fountain before turning left, back onto S. Columbus Drive, immediately followed by a slight left turn back into the

park. After passing through the garden section in the South Rose Garden, athletes will continue onto Balbo Avenue. At the intersection of Balbo Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, Sprint athletes will make a U-turn and head west on Balbo Ave to start their next lap. Olympic-distance athletes will turn right back into the park and will pass transition before beginning their next lap.

For Sprint-distance and Olympic-distance athletes alike - when starting a new lap on the run, please be mindful of other athletes merging onto the run course. Always fol-low the direction provided by race staff, course marshals and volunteers. Pay close attention to the posted on-course signage – it has been planned out and created to provide a safe racing environment and give you visual cues. But, also know you are ultimately responsible for knowing the course.

Though she sustained a flat tire in the London 2012 Olympic Games, Jorgensen finished on her second WTS podium at the Grand Final in Auckland. In 2013, Jorgensen started the season with a bang, winning the Omegawave World Triathlon San Diego to become the first American woman to top the podium at a WTS event.

She also won series events in Yokohama and Stockholm, es-tablishing herself as a threat to the competition on the run, where she continually posted the fastest run splits in the races she completed. Jorgensen has earned two WTS titles in 2014 in Yokohama and London.

Sarah GroffSarah Groff has been an elite triathlete since 2005, and was crowned the 2007 Aquathlon World Champion early in her career. A consistent performer, Groff earned the first-ever podium finish in a WCS event by a U.S. woman by taking third in Kitzbühel in 2011. She also earned her Olympic spot in London, finishing seventh in the qualifying event on the proposed Olympic course in 2011. Groff recorded the top season by an American in the history of the ITU World Championship Series in 2011 by plac-ing third overall to earn a spot on the series podium. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Groff led the U.S. with a fourth-place finish when she bridged back up to the leaders on the final 2.5k lap before falling 10 seconds short of the podium.

From 2013 to 2014, Groff has finished in the top eight in her last eight ITU races, including a second-place finish in London on May 31.

HISTORY OF TRIATHLON – 40 YEARS OF THE SPORT

Over the past 40 years, triathlon has evolved from a form of cross-training to a thriv-ing sport for elite and age-group athletes. In addition to the sport’s 40th anniversary, 2014 also marks another big milestone: 25 years since the inception of the International Triathlon Union and its world-class competition.

Here’s a timeline of events that have added to the rich history and development of the sport.

1974The first official triathlon was held in San Diego’s Mission Bay on Sept. 25, 1974, and welcomed 46 athletes. 1978John Collins helped organize the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon — the first event of its kind. Fifteen participants attended the race and 12 crossed the finish line.

1979A Sports Illustrated article featured the Hawaii Ironman. Entries increased to 108 the following year.

1982The U.S. Triathlon Association and American Triathlon Association merged under one unified National Governing Body called the U.S. Triathlon Association. In 1983, it was renamed as the Triathlon Federation USA.

1989The first Congress of the International Triathlon Union was organized in Avignon, France. A total of 30 National Federations were in attendance. In August, the first ITU World Championships were held.

1990The U.S. hosted the second ITU Triathlon World Championship in Orlando, Florida.

1991The first ITU World Cup event was held in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

1995The first Pan American Games triathlon was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

1996Triathlon Federation USA changed its name to the present USA Triathlon, a move that further identified the federation with the United States Olympic Committee’s National

Governing Bodies.

2000Triathlon made its first Olympic debut in Sydney. Jennifer Gutier-rez, Sheila Taormina and Joanna Zeiger were on the U.S. wom-en’s team and Ryan Bolton, Hunter Kemper and Nick Radkewich were on the U.S. men’s team.

2004The U.S. won its first Olympic triathlon medal when Susan Wil-liams of Littleton, Colorado, placed third.

2009The ITU World Triathlon Series was introduced, creating a series of races instead of a single-day championship.

2012The World Championship Series was renamed the ITU World Triathlon Series. The sport returned to its roots with the inaugural ITU World Triathlon San Diego, held in close proximity to the first-ever triathlon in Mission Beach. Hunter Kemper became a four-time Olympian.

2013Gwen Jorgensen made history at WTS San Diego when she became the first American woman to win an ITU series event.

2014Chicago became the third U.S. city to host a WTS race — joining San Diego (2012, 2013) and Washington, D.C. (2009).

2015The City of Chicago will host the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final and World Championships.

2016 Paratriathlon will make its debut at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

GRAND FINAL

2015 ITU WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES GRAND FINAL AND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSIn September 2015, Chicago will become the first U.S. city to host the ITU World Tri-athlon Grand Final, and the first city since Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2005 to host the age-group ITU World Championships. The best triathletes in the world will race throughout the 2015 season in cities around the world with hopes of earning a spot and com-peting for a world title. Races will include the elite ITU World Triathlon Grand Final (for men and women), juniors, under-23s, paratriathletes and age-groupers racing at the sprint and Olympic-distances.

The event week will begin with the ITU Aquathlon World Championships, a growing swim-run discipline. In 2013, more than 8,000 athletes competed in the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final and World Championships, one of the most prestigious triathlon events in the world. This heads to Edmonton in 2014.

Want to earn your chance to shine in Chicago when the World Championships are held here in the U.S. in 2015? To compete in the championship events, you’ll need to qualify for a spot with your National Federation.

In the U.S., your chance to qualify comes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Aug. 9 - 10 at USA Triathlon Age group Nationals. Olympic-Distance Nationals will be held on Satur-day, Aug. 9, and Sprint Nationals will be on Sunday, Aug. 10, with the venue centered at the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World. Registration is open now for both events:

Olympic-Distance Nationals – usatriathlon.org/agnc14oly (*requires qualification) Sprint Nationals – usatriathlon.org/agnc14sprint

There will be 18 slots on Team USA available per age-group, with slots rolling down to 25th place after the age-up rule. Age-groups are: 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-plus.

Team USA Age-Up RuleAt 2014 Age group Nationals, athletes will race in their appropriate age-groups based on their age as of Dec. 31, 2014. Awards will be issued based on those results. If an athlete “ages up” into another age-group in 2015, a separate set of results will be issued accounting for those athletes who aged up and Team USA slots will be awarded based on these results. So their finish time will be compared to those athletes in the older age-group.

For example, if John Doe is going to be 49 years old by Dec. 31, 2014, he will age-up

Page 54: ITU World Triathlon Chicago Event Program

54 ITU WORLD TRIATHLON CHICAGO

up into the 50-54 age-group for the 2015 World Championships since he will be 50 years old by Dec. 31, 2015. Thus, for Team USA qualifying purposes, his time at the qualification event will be compared to the men currently in the 50-54 age-group.

Who can qualify for Team USA?All athletes eligible to represent the United States must:

Be a U.S. citizen OR Be a U.S. national – someone who has resided in the US for three consecutive years and has not competed for their country of citizenship in the prior year.

Team USA eligible athletes must not have competed for their country of citizenship in the prior year. Athletes who choose to be recognized as nationals who have competed for their country of citizenship in the last year may get dispensation by obtaining a let-ter from the National Federation of their home country allowing competition as a U.S. athlete.

2016 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMESThere will be thousands of athletes from around the world descending on Chicago for an unforgettable event, but this is also your chance to catch Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls in action before the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

ITU has designated the 2015 Paratriathlon World Championships as an important event for paratriathletes vying for a spot in triathlon’s Paralympic Games debut. Top-ranked paratriathletes in each medal event will earn a Paralympic spot for their Na-tional Federation.

Some countries, including the U.S., are also considering the 2015 Grand Final and World Championships in Chicago as an individual qualifying event. If Chicago is chosen as a qualifying event for a National Federation, elite triathletes and paratriathletes could receive a nomination to represent their country in Rio in 2016. More informa-tion on the athlete qualification process for Rio 2016 will be shared as it becomes available.
