In the Arab poetry, the word dandana, means hum and is often associated to oud/luth music (the king instrument) as this instrument reminds the most the human voice. According to the great philosopher Al-Farabi (m. 950) : « its sounds look like the voice’s sounds because, as them, they are able to support and fluctuate”. Fouad Haddad (1928-1985), surnamed the father of the modern poets, was the first to publish a collection of poems in Egyptian dialectal language. Haddad's work fits perfectly into the lineage of sacred Arabic poetic tradition lasting for more than thousand years. That is why he was often compared to the great medieval Arab poets, such as illustrious Abou Nawas and al-Mutanabi, or the famous Sufi poet Jalal el-Din al-Rumi. Combining voice and oud, composition and improvisation, Dandana program is based on a selection of texts of this great poet, set to music by Tarek Abdallah, as well as two paragons of Egyptian protest song : Sayyed Darwish (1892-1923) and Sheikh Imam Issa (1918-1995). TarekAbdallah is an egyptian composer, lutenist andmusicologist fromAlexandria, born in 1975.He drawsinspiration from the golden age of the art of Egyptian oud solo (1910-1930), which is at the center of hismusicologicalresearch.HegrewupinAlexandria,itisasateenageralongsidethelocalculturalenvironment,especially the theater scene,where he had started self-taught inmusic. He is 19 years-oldwhen he beginsplayingtheoudandthenmeetsHazemShaheenwithwhomhefoundedthegroup"Eskenderella"in2000.InJanuary2005theArabOudHouseofCairoawardshimthediplomaofsoloistandteacherwiththeAwardofExcellence. He receives parallel teaching of several masters, the lutenist Hazem Shaheen and the greatcomposer and violinistAbdouDagher.He’s formed in theMoroccan schoolwith SaidChraibi and inPersianmusicwithDariushTalai.Since2001helivesinMarseilleandiscurrentlypreparingaPhDinMusicologyattheUniversity Lumière Lyon 2. His most famouscomposition is of course "Biladi, Biladi, Biladi", the Egyptian national anthem, the text has beenadapted from a famous speech of Mustafa Kamil. This essential composer ideally symbolizes atransitionfromtraditionalArabicmusicandmodern,bothinfluencedbytheWest(Italianoperaandoperettas)andmarkedbytechnology(theadventofmodernrecordingmeans).

CheikhImamIssa(1918-1995)Hewastherevolutionarypoetwhorefusedcategoricallyanyinjustice.Hissarcasticsongs,althoughprohibited, circulated under the coat. He remains a monument to the Land of the Pharaohs andthroughouttheArabworld.In1962hehadadecisivemeetingwithAhmedFouadNejmwithwhomhe struckupa friendshipandworkeduntilhisdeath.After theSixDayWar in1967, Sheikh Imambegancomposingsongstorevolutionarythemesandcriticalresponsibleforthedefeat,costinghimseveralstaysinthejailsofhiscountry.SheikhImamandFouadNegmgivetheirfirstFrenchconcertinApril1984,withtheiraccomplicepainterpercussionistMuhammadAliaspartofafestivalofArabmusicinNanterre,theaterAmandiersPatriceChéreau.SheikhImamIssaleftamultitudeofcommittedandpatrioticsongswithasamajorconcernthethirstfor freedom.
