After a week at Fantasy Camp, most campers don’t want to go home. Their bodies may be telling them that it’s time to rest for a while, but their hearts are ready for another week of baseball. For Matt Varney, both his heart and body are raring to go for another week. He’s putting himself to the test by pulling double duty as he attends his second Fantasy Camp in three weeks. From January 15-21, Varney attended the Arizona Diamondbacks Fantasy Camp in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is the Spring Training facility shared by the Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies; the D-Backs’ camp was held on the Minor League side of the facilities. Matt then took a week off before reporting to his 10th consecutive Brewers Fantasy Camp. Matt, 48, was drafted by the AARPS at the Diamondbacks camp; a team coached by former Brewers pitcher and Fantasy Camp coach Mike Fetters along with Mark Grace. The highlight of D-Backs camp for Varney was pitching in the coaches game when camp coach Steve Finley went deep on him. “Fett came to the mound laughing with a pat on my head and a “welcome to the Show,” he said. “While walking off the field, Gracie and (coach) Greg Swindell had fist bumps for me and Gracie said while pointing at Greg, ‘now you know what he felt like about 400 times.’ It was awesome,” he added. Varney said the other coaches, which included former Brewer and Fantasy Camp coach Damian Miller, Matt Williams, and Luis “Gonzo” Gonzalez, were “very cool.” Matt was voted his team’s Most Valuable Player and took home the Mark Grace MVP award. Although Matt had a great time at the Diamondbacks camp, he was still really looking forward to the Brewers camp. He considers himself a distant cousin to the D-Backs, but with our camp, he says “these guys are family.”

Trainer of the Year

If you have occasion to head into the trainer’s room today, take a moment to congratulate Athletic Trainer Jeff Paxson for being named the 2011 Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society® (PBATS) Minor League Trainer of the Year. Voted on by his peers in PBATS, this award is given annually to an athletic trainer that exemplifies the best in athletic training for their players and demonstrates a deep concern for the community and fellow athletic trainers. Earlier in 2011, Jeff was named the Midwest League Trainer of the Year for his work with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. When asked what receiving both honors means to him, Paxson “Pax” says “It’s recognition by my peers; people see what you do.” Pax has also been named the Trainer of the Year for his league on five separate occasions – Midwest League (1997, 2010 and 2011), California League (2000) and the Pacific Coast League (2007). Paxson, a Northeast Missouri State graduate, is entering his 19th year in professional baseball, all with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Pax has also been athletic trainer in winter ball. He spent one season in the Dominican Republic and five seasons in Venezuela. The role of an athletic trainer is not a nine-to-five job. It’s not uncommon for Paxson to work 14 to 15 hours on game days. Jeff, who has also worked Fantasy Camp for several years, doesn’t see much of a difference between working Spring Training versus Fantasy Camp. “The injuries are the same, but during the regular season they’re more chronic,” he said. “At Fantasy Camp, you’re here for only six days really playing. You don’t have much time to do anything with them; it’s just first aid, and do what you can to get them back on the field,” he added. Paxson, 42, shared his goals for the next phase of his career. “The ultimate goal for every minor leaguer is to transition to the Major League level.” Thankfully, not everyone needs individual care, however, one of the most important keys to your Major League experience at Fantasy Camp is the expertise offered by Pax and the rest of the training staff. Kudos to the team!

The sun may have set with one team undefeated, another winless, and the other four sandwiched in between them, but all teams are still in contention after one day of play. It doesn’t matter how you start...it’s how you finish.

It’s No Longer a Fantasy...It’s Game Time! For the second consecutive year, one team stands alone at the top of the standings at 2-0 and one coach has been a part of both fast starting teams: Jeff Cirillo. This year, Amber Alert, coached by ‘Rillo and Rob Deer, head into Wednesday’s match-up as the only unbeaten team. Four teams are tied for second place, with records of 1-1: Gumby’s Gumballs, Double V’s, Mangy Moose, and Money Ball. Picking up the rear is Gorman’s Ghosts who go into game three looking for their first win. In the morning slate of games, the margin of victory was between two and four runs in each game. However, the afternoon was a different story, with an offensive explosion from all three winning teams (Double V’s, Amber Alert, and Gumby’s Gumballs) scoring in double digits. All you have to do is look to the leaderboard to find one of the reasons for Amber Alert’s fast start, with five of their roster batting above .500 after day one, with two batting over .800: (Mike Meyer (.857) and Randy Rautenberg (.833).

But don’t anoint Amber Alert the Fantasy Camp championship just yet. The Gumballs, led by skippers Jim Gantner and Pete Ladd, have firepower of their own evidenced by four players who rank in the top seven in batting average, led by Tom Lettenberger (.833) who is currently one of four players batting over .800. Double V’s, headed by Greg Vaughn and Fernando Viña, have Dennis Driver, the only other player who’s batting over .800, at .833 Money Ball, with coaches Don Money and Cecil Cooper, may not have a player in the top ten of the leaderboard, but they do own the distinction of having the most batters on it with six, led by Doug Johnsen and Shawn Kramlich each batting .600. Moose Haas and Jerry Augustine, coaches of Mangy Moose, have two hitters in the top ten: Gary Anderson (.667) and Tim Horton (.600). Eric Dugenske, the lone member of Gorman’s Ghosts and coached by Ed Sedar and Gorman Thomas, broke into the top ten of the leaderboard with a batting average of .600.
