The wines of Israel are creating new interest because of their quality. Israelis are known for their creative energy, and technological and agricultural prowess. These have combined in a place with 5,000 years of winemaking history, to create a new dynamic, quality driven wine industry. Robert Parker, the world’s most influential wine critic, has written: “The wines are getting better all the time and some of them are superb.” Hugh Johnson, the world’s most famous wine writer, has written: “Many wines are quite exciting.”

Israel is part of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is the cradle of wine culture. It may be said that Israel is a ‘new world’ wine country, situated in one of the oldest wine regions on earth. Ancient Israel, with roots going back deep into Biblical times, must have been one of the earliest wine producing countries – at least 2,000 years before the Greeks & Romans took the vine to Europe.

In this Biblical land, one can find a fascinating combination of new and ancient world winemaking, in a country no bigger than New Jersey or Wales. Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Lafite, planted vineyards throughout Israel and revived the Israeli modern wine industry using French expertise. He planted vineyards throughout Israel in the 1880’s and built Israel’s two largest wineries with deep underground cellars at Rishon Le Zion and Zichron Ya’acov in the 1890’s.

Quality Revolution

The quality revolution only really arrived in 1980’s, when expertise was imported from California. It was the Golan Heights Winery, which introduced ‘new world’ viticulture and winemaking techniques with the assistance of their winemaking consultant from California, Peter Stern.

In the 1990’s a new awareness of quality food and wine began to spread in Israel. A growing number of small wineries were founded. Since then, something close to a wine fever has gripped the country. The area of vineyards has increased to 5,500 hectares.

Wineries

There are 40 commercial wineries in Israel, harvesting over 50 metric tons a year. The ten largest wineries account for well over 90% of the wine market, but there are also more than 250 small wineries and many more domestic wineries or garagistes.

Most of Israel’s wineries are modern and technologically advanced. All the major wineries employ internationally trained winemakers, with experience in major wine producing countries.The smaller wineries, which provide color and variety, are manned by people making wines of great individuality with pride and passion.

Grape Varieties

The main quality red wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz/Syrah. There are also some interesting varietal Cabernet Francs. Characterful Old Vine Carignans and Petite Sirahs give a hint of what Israel may become known for in the future. Carignan is the variety that has spanned the modern history of Israeli wine, arriving even before the involvement of Rothschild. Amongst the whites, apart from Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs, there are also Gewurztraminers, Rieslings and Viogniers.

There is no truly indigenous variety in Israel. The closest is Argaman, developed in Israel, which is a cross between Carignan and the Portuguese variety, Souzao. Argaman means ‘deep purple.’ Muscat of Alexandria is indigenous to the Eastern Mediterranean and it is the oldest of all grape varieties, maybe going back even to Biblical times. Another grape virtually unique to Israel is Emerald Riesling. It was created in California in the year of the founding of the State, but has really only succeeded in Israel where it produces popular semi dry wines.

Wine Regions

Israel is famed for its agriculture. Drip feed irrigation, which is used worldwide, was an Israeli invention that revolutionized the global agricultural industry. Israel’s viticulturists are technologically advanced and up to date. As an Eastern Mediterranean country, it is not a surprise that the climate is mainly Mediterranean.

The country is divided into five registered wine regions: Galilee in the north, Shomron, Samson, Judean Hills and the Negev Desert in the south. Like many thin countries, there are a surprising number of microclimates in so small an area. The most successful sub-regions for producing high quality wines are those with cooler climate and higher altitude, like the Golan Heights, Upper Galilee and Judean Hills. Whether in reference to the meteorological stations in the Golan or the experiments in the desert, Israel’s reputation for farming technology and innovation comes to the fore as they are applied in the country’s vineyards.

GalileeThis region includes the Upper Galilee, Lower Galilee and Golan Heights.The Galilee is the finest appellation. The Upper Galilee is a mountainous area of forests, plunging peaks and stony ridges. The soils are a mixture of volcanic, gravel and terra rossa. The Golan Heights is a volcanic plateau with basalt and tuff soil rising to 1,200 meters above sea level. The area benefits from cool breezes from the snow covered Mount Hermon.

ShomronShomron is Israel’s most traditional growing region, where vineyards were first planted in the 1880’s. The main concentration of vineyards surrounds Zichron Ya’acov and Binyamina on the southern slopes of Mount Carmel. Soils are heavy, limey and the climate is typically Mediterranean, benefitting from cooling breezes from the sea.

SamsonThe central coastal plain, the Judean Lowlands and Foothills make up this region, which is named after the Biblical figure Samson. The soils are sandy and terra rossa on the coast and limestone, alluvial clay and loam on the hills. The area has a coastal Mediterranean climate: hot, humid summers and warm, mild winters.

Judean HillsThis region begins in the Judean Foothills, west of Jerusalem, and runs from the mountains north of Jerusalem down to Yatir Forest. Warm days and cool nighttime temperature characterize the region which in places is 800 meters above sea level. The soils are thin, limey and stony. The higher mountains receive snow in the winter.

NegevThe Negev is the desert region that makes up half the country. Vineyards have been planted in the higher areas in the northeast and central Negev. Soils are sandy to loamy and the temperatures range from very hot during the day, to cooler evenings and cold nights. The dryness and lack of humidity keep diseases at a minimum.

Lately, sommeliers, retailers and wine critics all over the world, are beginning to show new interest in Israeli wine. They are impressed not only by the youth, knowledge and dynamism of Israel’s viticulturists and winemakers, but also in the quality of the wines, which are receiving rave reviews at the very highest level. The likes of Robert Parker and Hugh Johnson, Decanter and the Wine Spectator have in recent years come to realize something exciting is taking place in Israel. Israeli wines are also winning important awards in the major winetasting competitions such as Vinexpo and the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, Vinitaly, and both Decanter World Wine awards and IWSC in London. Arguably, Israel is today producing the best quality wines to be found in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Export

Israeli wines are sold on five continents. The United States, Canada and Western Europe are the main markets, but Israeli wines are successfully penetrating new markets in Eastern Europe and the Far East.Although once sold solely as kosher wines to a predominantly Jewish market, Israeli wines are now, more often than not, being marketed as the product of a new, high quality and exotic wine growing region.

Israel, being an Eastern Mediterranean country, produces wines that tend to share a place with the wines of Lebanon, Greece and Turkey on restaurant wine lists and wine store shelves. Wines from Israel can be found in European supermarkets, 3-star Michelin restaurants of France, Italy and Germany, top restaurants in America and Japan, and fine wine shops the world over.

Kosher Wines

It is important to understand that not all kosher wines are Israeli and not all Israeli wines are kosher. There are many Israeli wineries producing non-kosher wines. However Israel wineries are specialists in kosher wine and without doubt produce the best variety and finest quality kosher wines in the world today.

The word “kosher” means pure. The kosher certification allows a Jew who observes the Jewish dietary laws to enjoy the wine, but it does not affect wine quality. The same procedures for harvesting, fermentation, maturation and bottling are followed for kosher and non-kosher wines. The Wine Advocate, mouthpiece for the world’s most famous wine critic, wrote: “No-one should avoid wines simply because they have kosher certification. It seems generally irrelevant.”

The secret of Bazelet HaGolan Winery is the rich and fertile basalt soil on which its vineyards grow, situated at 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level. Carmel Winery

Carmel Winery was founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux. The main winery operations are in Zichron Ya’acov on the southern slopes of Mount Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Carmel also owns two small wineries: Kayoumi Winery in the Upper Galilee and Yatir Winery in the Northeastern Negev. Carmel has vineyards all over Israel, but is particularly well represented in the Upper Galilee. Carmel’s winemaker is Lior Lacser, who graduated in Beaune and has winemaking experience in Burgundy, Bordeaux and Australia. Domaine du Castel is a family estate founded by Eli Ben-Zaken in 1988. The winery and the vineyards are located 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Jerusalem in Ramat Raziel, in the Judean Hills, at an altitude of 700 meters (2,300 feet). Eli Ben-Zaken believes that good wine is only made from very good grapes. The vines are planted at high density to restrain the vines to produce high quality grapes in low yields. Eli strives to make fine quality wines in Old World traditional methods with modern technology. He uses the best French oak barrels and ages the wines for up to twenty-four months.

Margalit Winery

Margalit is a family-owned winery founded in 1989. It was ranked as one of the top three Israeli wineries by the World Wine Report 2004 and is run by winemakers Dr. Yair Margalit and his son, Asaf Margalit. The winery owns three vineyards: one in the Upper Galilee Mountains near the biblical village of Kadita, at an elevation of 800 meters, the second near the village of Binyamina, close to the Mediterranean Sea and the third in Zichron Ya’acov. Yatir Winery

Yatir Winery was founded in 2000 and is located at Tel Arad in the northeastern Negev, a site with 3,000 years of history. The vineyards are situated in the nearby Yatir Forest, Israel’s largest planted forest, which rises to an elevation of 900 meters (2,700 feet). This forms the southern tip of the Judean Hills. The winemaker is Eran Goldwasser, a graduate of Adelaide University in Australia. Yatir Winery is owned by Carmel Winery, but is managed independently.
