Staff Achievement Congratulations to a member of our Secondary teaching staff, Mrs Mel Laughton, who has recently had an academic paper published in the history journal, History in the Making. Mrs Laughton is currently completing a Masters in History and has written her paper on the way History is represented in cinema. If you've seen Casablanca, Breaker Morant or Disney's Pocahontas, you may be interested to know that not everything you see on the screen is necessarily true. Here's an excerpt from Mrs Laughton’s article: All three films depict events in history, and whilst by no means are they completely false depictions of real events, there is evidence of a deviation from the facts in a bid to present underlying political ideology. This ideology is shaped by the script, screen techniques, and characterisation in each. Hence, Pocahontas is a film about reconciliation of peoples, Casablanca is a piece of war propaganda, and Breaker Morant represents Australia’s emerging sense of nationalism. Through narrative structure these ideologies are presented to audiences in the form of words, sound and images. (Laughton, 2015) Interested to read on? Yesterday, Mr Watts, Miss Sackey and I are attending the 2015 AISNSW STEM Leadership

Conference in Sydney. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,

and through the Independent Schools Centre for Excellence (ISCE) the AIS is developing

specific activities to support independent schools to develop innovative projects within or

beyond the curriculum.

It is envisaged that we come away from today with valuable information and resources

to enable students to develop a deeper understanding of STEM disciplines.

Secondary students will be competing in this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition

run by the Australian Mathematics Trust and sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank.

Student in Years 7-10 will all compete, as well as those student studying Mathematics

and Extension Mathematics in Years 11 and 12. The date for the competition is Thursday

30 July. More information regarding the completion will be sent home to parents in the

coming weeks.

Congratulations to Vanessa Drabsch (year 9) for the first correct answer to the logic problem.

Well done to Mrs Jane Christie, who had the second correct answer.

To put your minds at rest, the solution is: Chris played waterpolo, Daniel played table tennis,

Jessica did skateboarding and Kimbra played handball.

Last week Year 12 met to discuss careers and pathways to tertiary studies in 2016 and

beyond. The meeting focussed on the ATAR, the University application process, early entry

applications, School Recommendation Schemes and Educational Access Schemes. I will be

working closely with our Year 12 students and assisting them in gaining access to their chosen

career or tertiary pathway.

This week our Year 11 students will be attending the CSU Facts day at Charles Sturt University

Bathurst. Students will attend a 45 minute presentation by guest speaker, Mr Bruce Buchanan,

followed by a 45 minute market in the gymnasium. Mr Buchanan will highlight issues facing

school leavers, both those beginning tertiary studies and those seeking employment.
