Alleppey is one of the most important tourist centers in the state of Kerala with a large number ofcanals providing Alleppey its lifeline; this coir-manufacturing city was once known as "Venice ofIndia". Alleppey the ideal headquarters for backwater tourism as well as for visits to the lovelychurch-filled town of Kottayam and the town of Aranmula, famous for its historic Aranmula SnakeBoat Race which is an annual event. On the second Saturday in August the annual Nehry CuoSnake Boat Race takes place, which starts with a water procession and concludes dramatically.

Cochin (Kochi)

Cochin is one of the most interesting places in India. The city is spread out over mainland,peninsula and islands. The ancient temples and the churches in this district are of special interestto tourists. You can also visit the Chinese fishing nets still present off the shores of the city. Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari or Cpae Comorin is a town in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu state,India. Located at the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula, it is also called CapeComorin. Trivandrum

Thiruvananthapuram also known as Trivandrum, is the capital of the Indian state ofKerala and the headquarters of the Thiruvananthapuram District. It is located on thewest coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. Referred to by MahatmaGandhi as the "Evergreen city of India", the city is characterized by its undulating terrainof low coastal hills and busy commercial alleys. With almost 745,000 inhabitants per the 2001 census, itis the largest and most populous city in Kerala; the wider urban agglomeration having a population ofabout one million. The city is the state capital and houses many central and state government offices,organizations and companies. Varkala

Varkala is a coastal town and municipality in Thiruvananthapuram district situated in theIndian state of Kerala. It is located 51 kilometers (approx. 32 miles) north ofThiruvananthapuram. It is famous for its beach resorts, as well as its 3,500 year oldJanardanaswamy temple, which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is referred toas Dakshin Kashi (Benares of the south). The kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominenttourist attractions in Kerala. Thatched roof covers over wooden hulls, 100 feet (30 m)in length, provided protection from the elements. At some point of time the boatswere used as living quarters by the royalty. Converted to accommodate tourists, thehouseboats have become floating cottages having a sleeping area, with western-styletoilets, a dining area and a sit out on the deck. Food is cooked on board by theaccompanying staff – mostly having a flavor of Kerala. The houseboats are of variouspatterns and can be hired as per the size of the family or visiting group. The living-cum-dining room is usually open on at least three sides providing a grand view of thesurroundings, including other boats, throughout the day when it is on the move. It isbrought to a standstill at times of taking food and at night. After sunset, the boatcrew provides burning coils to drive away mosquitoes. What types of clothing should I bring?We recommend that you travel as light as possible, as clothing and laundry are both quite inexpensive in India. What can I do during my "at leisure" times?You may utilize the car/driver to explore the city as you wish, within permissible limits. Parking charges and guideservices are additional. Are any monuments/sights closed on particular days?Daria Daulat at Srirangapatna, Mysore (Summer Palace) is closed every Friday. Bannerghatta National Park nearBangalore and Mysore Zoo are both closed every Tuesday. What is the recommended gratuity?In hotels, porters and room service attendants are normally tipped at the end of the stay, though an early tip is likelyto get you better service. Standard gratuity for restaurants is around 10%. Tipping of taxi drivers is not customary.Tipping of your tour guides/drivers is left to your discretion and should be a reflection of your enjoyment of the tour. What type of currency is recommended?U.S. Dollars and Indian Rupees are commonly accepted, as well as Thomas Cook or American Express travelers'checks. In cities you can change major foreign currencies and any brands of travelers' checks. Most big cities haveATMs which accept Visa and MasterCard as well as American Express.
