They are the workhorses of the river, pushing and towing larger ships into place. Butevery June, tugboats of all shapes and sizes take to the St. Marys River in Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan for an event that is pure fun. They parade through the Soo Locksand race up and down the river, all the while reminding us that, like the charitiesthey benefit, even the mightiest vessels need a helping hand once in a while. TheGreat Tugboat Race puts these colorful tugs on display for a good cause, with pro-ceeds benefiting disabled children in both Michigan and Ontario. For more info, visitsaultstemarie.com.

Dear Planner,

It’s that time of year again! The snow sculptures have melted, the fish houses areoff the lakes, and the ice has retreated to reveal sparkling waters. Park your motorcoachalong the shore and get your feet wet at some of the Midwest’s most “water-ful” grouptravel attractions.

Plenty of towns in the Midwest pride themselves on the amount of water surface theyoffer, as well as the variety of water-related activities available. Bismark’s Lewis & ClarkRiverboat will float your group down the Missouri River, providing guests with a look atthe river’s trade history and is a tribute to the great river steamers that have traveled theriver since the 1830s. Other traditional riverboat cruises include South Dakota’s CapitalCity Queen, Wisconsin’s La Crosse Queen paddlewheeler, and Minnesota’s PadelfordCruises down the Mississippi.

If your group is looking for a high-speed excursion on the water, check out Bryson’s Airboat Tours down the Platte River. View theNebraska scenery at nearly 60 mph! For a different ambience, your group will enjoy basking in the lap of luxury on one ofthe Midwest’s extravagant yachts such as Missouri’s BransonLanding Princess.

This issue also covers water-themed land attractions suchas aquariums, museums, lighthouses, resorts and everythingin between. You’ll also catch a sneak peak of the Group TravelShow & FAM coming this fall. This year we’ll be sailing overto Rapid City for the excitement. Don’t miss the boat!

People love the water. And why not? You can swim in it,

lounge beside it with a zippy umbrella drink, splish,

splash, cannonball and dive in the deep end of a pool.

Set your deckchair on the end of a dock and catch up

with old friends. Rent a cabin with a spectacular view and

leave your footprints in the sand. Fish, play, bird watch,

rejuvenate, and relax.

What's not to like about water? Especially when the

Midwest is chockfull of cruise lines, charter boats, tempting

waterside resorts, nature preserves and must-see museums

that make lakes, rivers and the people who've built their

dreams around them, the ultimate side trip, en route to a

sunset cruisewith the band playing and thewind in your hair.

Still, why take your group on the water? Because

people love the water. Okay, we already went over that.

But for the tour operator, group tours on the water provide

not only variety and flexibility (superb resorts and

picture-perfect villages tend to spring up by water), but

also convenient locations, accommodations and staff

who've made an art of working with groups of all sizes.

Plus, anyone who works around water knows that rain

or shine the showmust go on. You'll be working with people

who are pros at coming up with contingency plans and

programming that keeps you and your group entertained

and on the go, full steam ahead.

So jump in. The water's warm.

Ahoy There! If you want to get a taste forthe wet and wild and stillhave a great big lot for yourmotorcoach and terra firmaunder your feet, you couldn’tdo better than an aquarium, botanical garden or hatchery.Chicago lays claim to theworld’s largest indoor aquarium:the John G. SheddAquarium. Nebraska’sAk-Sar-Ben Aquarium offers330 acres of recreation areaand spectacular views of thePlatte River (think: greatpicnic spot). In neighboring Kansas

you’ll encounter watergardens, bog and a botanicalmaze at Overland Park &Botanical Garden, one of themany sites that provides yourgroup an opportunity to strolland photograph rare and eye-catching wetland birds, animalsand plants. Arrange a narratedtour. Then settle down for theevening at a nearby resort, where the pool will bring outthe water baby in everyone.Did someone say water slide?Want to soak up some

culture? Well, point yourmotorcoach at any of thescores of museums dedicatedto America’s waterways, lakesand rivers. The MinnesotaMarine Art Museum inWinona collects great artinspired by water. Enjoyhours of hands-on fun withthe “world of technology”and “world of water” exhibitsat Discovery World locatedright on Milwaukee’sLakefront, and Dubuque, Iowaplays host to the NationalMississippi River Museum. You can even schedule anovernighter for your group ontheir 1934 dredge boat, theWilliam M. Black. The Great Lakes Shipwreck

Museum features shipwreckand diving exhibits, whileMunising Bay ShipwreckTours takes you out on

Superior to see the real dealthrough the glass-bottomedfloor. The granddaddy of allshipwrecks is probably theRMS Titanic. Though the shipsank in the North Atlantic,Missouri’s Titanic Museumhas recreated that tragicand storied April night in1912, complete with grandstaircase, first-class stateroomand third-class cabin.

All AboardBefore you slip into swimsuitsand hit the beach, try out ashoreline cruise. The world

looks different from thewater, and there’s a lot youcan see on the water that youcan’t from the beach, like afull-spectrum view of multi-million dollar lake homes.Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonkais ringed by fabulous mansionsthat are yours for the taking—as in taking photographs—aboard an excursion boat.Several cruise lines provide

themed outings—famouslandmarks, nature, fall colors. The Lewis & Clark Riverboat(North Dakota) takes you ona voyage about America’slegendary explorers. Andfor laughs and stories, you’ll

want to hitch a ride with theQueen of the Mississippifor the Mark Twain TributeCruise, which brings youright to the doorstep ofTwain’s boyhood home inHannibal, Missouri. WendellaSightseeing Company offersthree separate cruise viewsof Chicago: lake and river, architecture and sunsetover the city. There’s theadded bonus of end-of-dayBuckingham FountainWater and Light Show.Don’t forget to leave the

city behind at some point

and head into the tall treesand scenic majesty of aWisconsin River Cruise ora Mississippi River Cruisethrough the backwaters andchannels, where river birdsnest and the currents teemwith over 100 species of fish.If your group has an eye forcasting a line, there are alsoplenty of fishing charters andguides eager to lead you totheir favorite hot spots. And that’s just the tip of

the iceberg. Your group canmix up their sightseeing witha two-step on the ship’s dancefloor and cocktail hour withthe onboard jazz ensemble.

A Tour Operator’sGuide to the WaterIn fact, if you’re looking for agroup tour on water, you can’tgo wrong with a boat and aquiet stretch of water. Cruiselines are made for groups. They offer a full lineup ofdestinations and add-onevents like seasonal festivalsand entertainment. Narratedtours come made to order. And luckily, your groupdoesn’t have to catch itsdinner. Servers bring mealsright to your table. Butremember to bring a beltwith some wiggle room; foodtastes even better on thedeck of a ship.Sometimes, however, a

boat may not be big enoughfor your group. The chartercompany will work with youto organize your group intosections. While one sectionplies the water, the otherscan enjoy a shore lunch, tour an exhibit or take aguided river walk. Then there’s that thorny

issue of weather. Ugh.Why does it have to be sounpredictable? Well, restassured your cruise lineand resort have run upagainst rain and dark skiesbefore. They can help youtweak an itinerary and workout options to make thebest use of a rainy day.The only thing overboard

about group tours on thewater is the variety available.Whether you want to rentcanoes, paddle boats or electricfun boats and plot your owncourse, or hire an old-fashioned steamboat, amillion-dollar yacht (Yes, it’strue. Check out AmericanLady Yacht Cruises in Iowa),airboat or fishing charter andhave someone else do thedriving, the sky’s the limit. Andthe horizon’s pretty wide—and breathtaking—on theopen water, don’t you think?

It’s a big issue, safety; one you will takeseriously as a professional planner. But thegood news is, you don’t have to shoulder it

all alone. There is plenty of responsibility to beshared. From the individuals in your group, tothe bus company you choose, to the hotels andsites you visit, everyone can play an importantrole in addressing issues of safety. Be aware ofthisand itbecomeseasy tocheckandmakesureothers are doing their part.

Let’s begin with choosing a carrier. Wouldn’tit be nice if there was a website you couldgo to that would tell you everything youneeded to know about the safety stats of themotorcoach company you are considering? There is…sort of. But it’s not very helpfulwhen the highest rating they offer is“satisfactory” and the lowest is “notsatisfactory.” This is where a little detectivework on your part comes into play. If youcan, check with other planners to see whichthey have used and how they liked them. ButI wouldn’t recommend taking anyone’s wordfor anything. Take the time to visit any buscompany you are using for the first time.

Stan Holter of Richfield Bus companyencourages new customers to come tourhis facility and ask questions. “Experiencematters,” says Stan “from the experienceof the bus company to the experience ofthe driver.” You’ll want to know that youand your group are in good hands, so ask the

questions pertinent to your group or outing. For instance, you may be paying for a driverfor a 15-hour day, but only 10 hours can bespent driving. Did you know that changesthe minute you cross the border intoCanada? When packaging your trip you don’twant to ignore such legal ramifications.Industry regulations may require 8 hoursoff each day, but some companies likeRichfield Bus require 9. Plan time to parkthe bus, sweep it up, and service therestroom, plus pre-trip prep in the morning. If an itinerary doesn’t allow for all this, asecond driver will be added. “Hours ofservice is huge,” says Stan when talkingabout safety, “Most crashes result frompushing the driver all day long.” Learn howthe regulations apply to your group, and beaware they will probably be changing soonand become even more stringent.

All the fun of a trip away can be lost whenyou return home to a house that’s beenburglarized. George Fernau of Gone AgainTours gets his people thinking about safetyeven before they have packed. Beginningwith a checklist at the time of booking, hereminds travelers of some common sensepractices such as not allowing mail andnewspapers to pile up outside their home.Make photocopies of important papers andnever bring your social security card on thetrip. Consider leaving your phone numberwith police and be sure someone at home

knows where you will be. George does aone-hour seminar on safety and likes toremind us that “safety is for everybody.”Wedon’t want to scare the bejeezus out of ourtravelers, but we do want to help everyonebe aware that they play an important rolein their own safety while away from home.Once you have arrived at your hotel, Georgelikes to keep everyone on the bus longenough to remind them to keep quietabout which room number they are in. Eventhe nicest hotels can have stranger dangerin the lobby…people who will follow youto your room and snatch your purse off thebed while you are rushing to the bathroom.Just make sure your door closes all theway and flip the safety lock every time.Looking out for your group’s safety is aresponsibility you take seriously, but it alsois something you can promote as part ofyour business. “Go with a professional forsecurity,” says George.

Having cell phones now makes everythinga whole lot easier. As a tour professional, doyou make sure you have the cell phonenumbers of everyone in your group?Whatever you do to address safety issues, the important thing is that you are aware, that you encourage your members to beaware, and then everyone can get goingand have great fun.

When The Curvy Scarlet Ladies of the Morning decided to take their first overnighttrip, the conversation was all about where to go and what to do. But the minute itwas time to choose a bus company to get them there, safety became the top issue.

How do you know if the company you choose to carry your group has asafe record? And whose responsibility is your group’s safety anyway?

The advantage of organizinga private group trip is that you pick the date, time and riversegment you wish to float and they bring the boats and hostan educational “sand bar” seminar followed by a hot dog& marshmallow roast. Float trips on the Kansas River areappropriate for novice boaters and groups, however it takessome muscle power to paddle down the river and we advisethat participants be in good health and physically in shape.
