This bulletin reports the results of a survey of residential fuelwood con-
sumption and production in Indiana for a 1-year period encompassing the1995/1998 heating season. Topics examined include the geographic distri-bution of residential fuelwood consumption and production within the State;the species of trees used for residential fuelwood; the types of wood-burningfacilities used; tile reasons for burning fuelwood; and the land, ownership,and tree classes from which tuelwood was produced. Such detailed intbr-
mation is necessary for intelligent planning and decisionmaking in woodi procurement, tbrest resource management, forest industry development,
and tbrest research.
I The survey was conducted in cooperation with the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources and was partially funded by the Indiana Biomass GrantProgram, which is administered by the Energy Policy Division of the IndianaDepartment of Commerce. The cooperation of the Indiana households andcommercial producers who took the time to respond to this survey is alsoacknowledged and appreciated.
In this bulletin, consumption refers to the volume of fuelwood burned byIndiana's households, regardless of the source of the fuelwood (roundwood,wood residues from primary or secondary manufacturing, scrap or waste
4wood products, etc.). Production refers _ to the volume of roundwood
i harvested to supply Indiana's wood-burning households. This report _oesnot include information about harvesting for industrial fuelwood. Suchinformation is included in reports covering wood use by primary processing
