Renewable Energy?
Definiton of Renewable Energy is Energy obtained from sources that are essentially inexhaustible (unlike, for example the fossil fuels, of which there is a finite supply)
Benefits of Renewable EnergyIt is a pollution-free, infinitely sustainable
from of Energy.
It does not require fuel.
It does not create GreenHouse gasses.
It does not produce toxic or radioactive waste.
History of Using Wind EnergyWind energy has always been important for
mankind. The first invention that used wind to create
energy is sails. Earliest Records go as far back as 5000 B.C. For the first sail Transportation.
Wind-Powered boat has been major contributor to water transportation.
This is very important era in history because there was now another way of transportation in water.
What is Wind?Wind is the flow of gases on a large scale.Wind consists of the bulk movement of air.Long-duration winds have various names
associated with their average strength, such as breeze, gale, storm, hurricane, and typhoon.
Winds can shape landforms. As a natural force, the wind was often
personified as one or more wind gods or as an expression of the supernatural in many cultures. So the main goal is to convert this natureal force into usable energy.
What is Wind Energy? And Wind Power?Wind energy Is the kinetic energy of the air
in motion. The wind has been used for thousands of
years as a source of energy. Wind power is the conversion of wind energy
into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage or sails to propel ships.
How to convert Wind Energy into usable Wind Power?
Wind Power is created by different types of wind power generators.
Like Wind Turbines ( Used for Generating Electricity ) , when a lot of wind turbines setup in a close area it called Wind Farm.
In the past people used windmills. Windmills are the oldest form of technology used to create wind energy. They were originally created to help pump water for farming and consisted of a tower with a multi-bladed rotary engine. The wind would turn the blades, which would then turn a crankshaft that would pump the water. Windmills can be used for not only pumping water, but also for grinding grain, tobacco and other spices.
Wind Turbine?Term used for a wind energy conversion
device that produces elecrticity ; typically having one, two, or three blades.
How does Wind Turbines Work?
At it’s simplest:
The wind turns the turbine’s blades
Turning blades spins a shaft connected to a generator
Generator generates electricity
WindIt being a wind turbine, its output first most
depends on the wind. Both the speed and force of the wind can be deciding factors. The more wind speed and force you have got, the greater is the amount of power your wind turbine generates. Different regions have different wind speeds. You can gather the available wind dynamics data and using a model like Webull Distribution you can calculate how effective the wind of a particular region is going to be.
HeightPlaces of higher altitudes have more wind
due to various atmospheric factors. Besides, at higher places there is less obstruction from the surrounding hills, trees and building. In fact the height is so important that alternative energy scientists and engineers are trying to use kites (due to the heights they can easily reach) to tap the wind power.
RotorThe amount of energy produced by your wind
turbine is proportional to the size of the rotor used, when all other factors have been taken into consideration. A bigger rotor certainly generates more power. Although it may cost more, in the long run, whenever you are getting a wind turbine erected, go for a big a rotor as possible.
Types of Wind TurbinesHorizontal-Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT) Have
the main rotor shaft and electrical generator at the top of tower, and must be pointed into the wind.
Advantages of HAWTBlades are to the side of the turbine’s center
of gravity, helping stability.Tall tower allows access to stronger wind in
sites with wind shear.Ability to throw the rotor blades in a storm,
to minimize damage.
Types of Wind Turbines
Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) Have the main motor shaft arranged vertically.
Advantages of VAWTCan be easier to maintain if the moving parts
are located near ground. As the rotor blades are vertical, a yaw device is
not needed, Reducing the cost.Low height useful where laws do not permit
structures to be placed high.Does not need a free standing tower so is much
less expensive and stronger in high winds that are close to the ground.
Usually have a lower Tip-Speed ratio so less likely to break in high winds.
Benefits of Renewable Energy?
It is a pollution free, infinitely sustainable form of energy
It doesnt require fuelDoesnt create greenhouse gassesDoesnt produce toxic or radioactive waste.
Advantages of Wind EnergyWind is a renewable energy.
No air or water pollution.
Reduces Fossil Duel Consumption.
Wind Power Plants create many jobs.
Increase local tax revenues.
Advantages of Wind EnergyIt’s Free.
Combinable with Solar Energy.
The fuel is abundant and inexhaustible.
Clean Energy-no resulting carbon dioxide emissions.
Modular and rapid to install.
Advantages of Wind EnergyLand friendly-agricultural/industrial activities
can continue around it.
Generates jobs comparable in numbers to the conventionals power sector
Public Support for wind energy.
Wind Turbines take up less space than the average power station.
Disadvantages of Wind EnergyBack up energy needed.
Wind Variability.
High Initial investment.
Wind energy can not be stored.
Good wind sites are often located far away from where electricity is needed.
Disadvantages of Wind EnergyConcerns on visial and noise pollution
Onshore wind farms may compete with other uses for the land.
Wind Energy is non dispatchable.
