ONLINE DATABASES andLibrary Discovery

Individual Databases• Databases are usually organized

by major subject i.e. nursing, business, etc

• Benefit: use advanced search tools to find millions of trustworthy, subject-specific resources Detriment: you have to choose and search multiple databases

• Use your Research Guide to discover these!

Discovery Search

• Searches majority of LRC’s databases all at once

• Benefit: you just search—simple and convenient

• Detriment: You don’t get the specific treatment and advanced search capabilities of individual databases.

Citing our SourcesIt's important to cite sources you used in your research for several reasons:

•To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you

used to get your information

•To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and

acknowledging their ideas

•To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by other authors

•To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them

accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography or reference

list

Activity• What did I learn today that was useful?• What would I like to learn more about?

Page 18: Itct year1 mitchell

Today We…

• Searched LRC Resources including the Discovery Tool and IEEE

• Used RefWorks to create a bibliography
