curately accessing and applying information to their every day studies, there remains a need to constantly enlighten them on how best to access information.

With this in mind, the Universi-ty Library department embarked on a drive to sensitise students through the information literacy day; a campaign designed to teach them on how to appropriately use library materials to support their academic and research endeav-ours.

Information literacy is defined as the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. The process is wrapped up in five stages, which are: identify, find, evaluate, apply, and acknowledge information.

Through the Zetech University Information Literacy day, trained library ambassadors spent the

Commenting on the venture, Moses Kijugu, who heads the Library Department shared that the campaign is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and empower them to efficiently evaluate and apply information in their academic undertakings,

“Information literacy is a critical tool that all students should employ to ensure they reap the full benefits of the materials availed to them by the Zetech library. We are confident that the information literacy day will go a long way in training our students to intentionally and strategically interact and utilise information.” Moses said.

He added that the varsity used the opportunity to review what kind of literacy skills students require to navigate information and to explore effective literacy programmes they can apply to leverage the opportunities the digital world provides.

The event theme was Be informed to innovate, and students took part in the activities of the campaign which included training on e books, use of online papers, search and retrieval, APA referencing, among other activities.

Excitement as Varsity Ushers in New Students

The year kicked off on a high as the Uni-versity ushered in the 2018 first group of new students, admitted during the

varsity’s January intake. It was a bevy of activ-ity, as students and the guardians reported to the varsity main campus for an exciting session that would mark the beginning of a great jour-ney at the institution.

The university orientation session is important

The Zetech family had an exciting time in November last year celebrating grad-uates who were working at Digital Data

Divide(DDD); an organisation that is commit-ted to elevating the lives of the less fortunate in society through provision of ICT related jobs and sponsored university education to hun-dreds of young people across the country.

In an enlightening session at the firm’s office situated along Thika Road, the Zetech Uni-

versity graduates were celebrated by an elated DDD team, providing a forum for them to express their gratitude for the opportunity to learn under the scholarship programme while lauding the Zetech team present for ensuring they enjoyed a fulfilling campus life at the in-stitution.

Commenting on the success of the students, Calvince Odemba, Social Impact Director, DDD celebrated the success, noting that the

celebration of the notable achievement of the graduates would serve to inspire those who are part of the team who are yet to pursue higher education, to comprehend the importance of university education.

“We are proud of our Zetech graduates who have labored diligently, balancing academics and their professional lives to reach this far; indeed, this is a major step to realizing their dreams. We appreciate Zetech for their com-

mitment in joining us in this venture that is focused on equipping young people with knowledge and skills to become independent thinkers who can someday uplift their com-munities,” said Calvince.

On his part, Peter Osumba, Deputy Registrar, Enrollment & University Advancement, at the university lauded the DDD team for their ded-ication in enhancing lives of the less fortunate in the country and enabling them to build their lives of the valuable foundation of education. “As Zetech, we are honoured to partner with likeminded parties that seek to not only impact lives but start them on a journey to success. We thank the DDD team for working closely with the varsity and congratulate our dear gradu-ates for successfully completing their courses.” he said.

He added that as the institution builds on its course portfolio with plans to increase science based programmes, he encouraged the DDD team to continue registering students at Zetech so that they can benefit from quality university education.

The excited graduates, before launching into a feasting session to mark their accomplishment, each took some time to share their experiences on campus, noting that they would not trade their experiences for anything but would ef-fectively use the knowledge gained and skills attained at DDD, to better the lives of their communities and pursue their dreams.

as it eases the transition process of joining uni-versity and adequately prepares new students for an incredible and fulfilling campus journey that will largely contribute to the graduates they become once they complete their courses.

The freshers were taken through an insightful administration process where they were able to get answers to any queries they had and were thereafter treated to a delightful ceremo-

ny where they interacted with the University management, Heads of schools and their aca-demic trainers, among other officers.

Commenting on the event, Moses Maina, Registrar Academics shared that the session is critical in preparing the students for their life in campus and enlightening them on what the University offers them as students as well as what is expected of them. He said, “We are al-

ways excited to specially welcome our new stu-dents and take a few days to interact with them and orient them on our university processes to ensure they make the most of the services available to them.”

As the students who are taking courses in dif-ferent faculties under the Zetech University and Zetech Career Centre programmes settled in, they were treated to an encouraging word by the varsity’s Acting Vice Chancellor and DVC-Academics, Research and Extension Dr. Alice Njuguna who took time to speak to the students and guardians on what it takes to en-joy a successful campus life.

“This is an exciting and important time in your life and we are delighted that you chose to come to Zetech University. Here, we expect that you will keenly take part in your classes and listen to the wisdom shared with you by your trainers and other administration officers as wise words are food to the soul.” said Dr. Njuguna. She added that the university man-agement is committed to ensuring the students benefit from quality higher education.

The timely event also including thrilling per-formances by the university’s talented ongoing students as well as the Christian Union Club who took some time to uplift the new trainees as they prepare for a fulfilling campus life.

tion drive designed to package a Christmas gift for the kids who have been rescued from the streets and offered better lives, with most of them coming from families that are struggling to meet their basic needs.

During the drive, students and staff members took time off to spend a fun and festive day

with the family, taking part in engaging activ-ities such as cooking for the family and their guests, playing with the kids and dance and art presentations showcased by the talented chil-dren at the centre.

Through this initiative, the team was able to interact with the kids on a personal level and

listen to their individual stories, in order to encourage them to go after their dreams, no matter what life throws at them.

Speaking at the drive, Registrar Academics and Executive Director, Corporate Affairs Moses Maina reaffirmed the varsity’s commitment to making a difference in the community, laud-ing the home’s management team represented by Eric Wanjala for taking up the noble role of caring for the less fortunate in the area.

“Zetech University is honoured to be a part of this great initiative and we remain commit-ted to playing our part in enhancing the lives of those in our community.” He said, adding that in 2018 the varsity will put more focus on implementing projects geared towards ampli-fying the lives of members of the community across the country.

After the fun and feasting, the family and their visitors enjoyed a fellowship led by the varsity’s Christian Union Club that served to inspire the kids and their care givers, as well as the Zetech family. The fraternity was also able to present donations in kind including stationery and food stuffs to the centre in support of the food donation drive.

The University remains dedicated to working with likeminded partners on sustainable com-munity focused projects designed to empower the less fortunate in the society.

Nutrition Department Promotes Healthy Livingin Diabetes Awareness Campaign

Through the Varsity’s Nutrition department, the Zetech fraternity held a weeklong aware-ness drive and screening sessions at the Thika Road Campus, where staff members and stu-dents were enlightened on healthy living and tested for various lifestyle ailments. Moreover, those participating were challenged on how to eat, exercise and live right.

Commenting on the campaign, the Head of the Nutrition Department Genevieve Ombunda, noted that it is critical that both the young and older generations understand the dangers of Diabetes and are counseled on what it means to adopt healthy living,

“Through this campaign, we created awareness

and sensitised students and staff on diabetes and other non-communicable diseases and we gave them practical exposure on the nutrition care process, including the latest research,” Genevieve said, adding that they attended to hundreds of students and faculty members through the campaign.

Highlighting the importance of the exercise, the varsity’s Dean of Student Affairs Elizabeth Muhia emphasized that one’s health is one’s wealth. She commended the department for the exercise adding that the varsity is keen on promoting healthy living among students, staff and the lager community.

The testing sessions implemented also includ-ed counseling on nutrition and healthcare as well as screening sessions to test BMI (Weight/Height), Blood pressure, Blood Sugar test, Body fat composition, as well as Body temper-ature to enable the participants to understand their status and better focus on adapting to a healthier lifestyle.

In 2017, the WDD theme was Women and diabetes - our right to a healthy future, with a special focus on women and diabetes as it is estimated that about 199 million women have Diabetes, with 2 out of 5 women with Diabetes in the reproductive age.

Strong partnerships are a critical to the advancement of any institution. In this line, Zetech University continued its

robust partnership with entertainment outfit Kaka Empire with a focus to enhance the lives of students through inspiration, entertainment and regular career advise seminars with the varsity’s students.

At the close of November 2017, Zetech joined hands with the firm and humanitarian organ-isation UNICEF Kenya to teach young people about healthy living and the importance of em-bracing a positive lifestyle, in a lively session held at the varsity’s Thika Road Campus.

The exhilarating session headlined by Kennedy Ombima aka King Kaka, involved an in depth, enlightening discussion with the students around sexuality and the importance of making the right choices at a young age. The renowned artist, entrepreneur and UNICEF Ambassador took time, together with the UNICEF team talked to the students about pressing issues around HIV/AIDS, positive living as well as an additional inspirational segment on making it in life through entrepreneurship.

Advocating for knowing one’s HIV status, King Kaka led a heated debate among the young men and women around issues of sex-uality and the importance avoiding a lifestyle

Youththat can lead one to contracting the disease. He allowed the students to ask questions about choices they face every day and they received answers on what to do to live right.

“There is a certain amount of confidence that comes with knowing your HIV status, you need to know, trust me,” said King Kaka, add-ing, “through this #TunakulaLifeNaAdabu campaign, we are encouraging the youth in this country to know their status, live positive-ly and make the right choices in life.”

Support his encouraging words, HIV special-ist at UNICEF Kenya Terezah Alwar reminded the students that as young people, this is the right time to make important decisions that will make a difference in how they live their lives. “This is a critical time to make important decisions about your life; please take it serious-ly as this will determine the path you take.” She said.

Lauding the team for taking time to encour-age and inspire the Zetech fraternity, Moses Maina, the University’s Registrar Academics and Executive Director in charge of Corpo-rate Affairs, said, “Indeed, you can never have too much motivation and inspiration. It is im-portant that our students are built up in every sphere of their lives so that they become holis-tic graduates who can influence the world.

Spending wisely in campus is a tricky subject because it almost always seems like you just do not have enough money. This is the time to en-joy your youth and hang out with your peers, but money is always an issue. But not all hope is lost; one of my resolutions is to find ways to spend money wisely and still enjoy myself.

So, here are some sound tips for this journey;

1. Budget: the magic six letter word that many love to quote, but few actually implement. It is very simple, I decided to do some research and found out that the first step in spending your money wisely is making a budget. Just write down your needs and estimated costs so that you can spend on the most important things.

2. Spend Like a Student: Most students are sponsored by their guardians or don’t have a full time job so your money is limited and

Looking for work in campus or after completing your course is often an up-hill task for many young people in this

country. It is therefore important to have the right attitude and adequately put yourself out there with regard to your CV presentation and personal profile. In this edition, Journalism student Alfred Wanjohi shares tips on what it takes to prepare for that dream job:

1. Think like an Employer and Like a Job Seeker

If you’re applying for a job or internship, it is advisable that you, “look at your experience from both sides; the potential employer’s and your own.” This will help you craft a resume that is attractive and gain skills that are mar-ketable.

2. Craft a winning profile- Highlight your qualifications

Include a convincing short profile in your CV that gives the reader a clear picture of what you have to offer a potential employer. Keep your summary brief and impressive.

3. Describe Your Achievements

Share details about projects you have been in-volved in that show leadership, commitment and determination. Include university and high school activities such as class representa-tive, club membership, leadership roles, which will make you stand out. Participate in as many volunteer initiatives that will prepare you to do

TIPS ON SPENDING WISELY AS A CAMPUS STUDENT

WHAT NEXT AFTER CAMPUS(Tips on Getting Hired)

if you don’t use it well it can mess you up, so before you buy that sh2000 watch remember that you are a student. Prioritise and buy only what suits your student lifestyle and once you start making your own money, you can spend on the extra stuff. You would not want to buy a cool t-shirt or that beautiful dress only to real-ize you do not have enough tissues

3. Save Up: I know it sounds lame, but saving up for a rainy day is good move. It is not going to be easy if you are not used to it or you have never saved before as it requires discipline and commitment. Get an accountability partner and start small each week and once it’s a habit, it will become easier.

4. Invest: Google on how to do investments, why you should invest and put into action the knowledge you get. There are many websites and books with lessons on handling money ef-fectively and forums such as unit trusts that are easy to invest in.

5. Avoid impulse buying: Be careful not to buy items you didn’t plan to purchase; you will in-terfere with your budget (refer to point one).

6. Go out only on occasions: As a young per-son you want to enjoy your life; movies, con-certs, parties and other paid events to have fun. While these experiences may be enticing, they can drain on your wallet. Instead, spend your free time indoors or with friends and save money. Go for inexpensive plans e.g. practic-ing your hobbies, attending open mic, going for a walk/hike/bikes ride or volunteer.

well in your industry of choice.

4. Make sure your CV is well written

Put together a “reader-friendly” document and proofread the CV to check for grammatical and spelling errors. You can ask a friend or rel-ative to read through and give you feedback to ensure your CV is excellent.

5. Professional Memberships

Remember that professional membership is a selling point in your profile. Research on asso-ciations you can become a member of, such as Marketing Society of Kenya, Public Relations Society of Kenya, among others; this will defi-nitely set you apart. Include this information, as well as any awards you won at university level, in your CV.

6. Provide Contact Information:

It is important to include a mailing address, telephone number and professional e- mail address to enable potential employers to reach you easily. Always ensure you key in your cor-rect telephone number for hiring managers to easily contact you. Also, create a professional email account; an inappropriate email address could make potential employers throw your resume away.

7. Prepare for interviews

Ensure you are always ready for an interview. Buy some professional clothes you can wear in case you are called for an interview abruptly. Moreover, read a lot so that you are up to date and always prepared to answer questions.

The Zetech University main campus came alive this past December when the varsity Student Affairs office, led by

Sports Coordinator Alfred Muli, held a special ceremony to celebrate the varsity’s ladies team Zetech Sparks, for managing a great run in the Kenya Basketball Federation women’s Premier League.

The talented squad managed to battle sea-soned teams in their first season after joining the coveted league in 2017, making it to the quarter final level; the Sparks beat Co-oper-ative Bank 54-50 in Game Two of the league play-offs quarter-final held at the Africa Naza-rene University but lost narrowly in the make or break game three that would have seen

During the celebration, Acting Vice Chancel-lor and DVC. Academics, Research and Exten-sion Dr. Alice Njuguna lauded the ladies for a fantastic performance, encouraging them to maintain the focus and work towards excelling in all areas of their life, “We are proud of you ladies, and what you have been able to achieve. Remember, even as you excel in sports, train yourself to read and study so that you can effi-ciently manage all areas of your life.” Dr. Alice Njuguna said.

On his part, Executive Director in charge of Corporate Affairs Moses Maina congratulated the team on their success in their first premier

league season, and assured the team of the institution’s commitment to support the squad as they plan to reach the top in the 2018 tourna-ment.

The Sparks and their coach-es Maurice Obilo and Job Munene expressed their gratitude to the Student Affairs team and the entire management board for en-suring they can effectively train and take part in the coveted tournament.

“It has been a great run for the team and I am proud of the excellence displayed by the team,” said Coach Obi-lo, adding, “we are keen on hitting the finals in 2018 through hard work, persis-tence and regular training to ensure we are in top form.”

Deborah Obunga, Captain of the Zetech Sparks, ap-preciated her team for their commitment and diligence in training, competitions and team work that played a critical role in their success during the season. She not-ed that the team is eager to rise to the top this year, with the continued support of the Coaches, the Student Affairs department and the Univer-sity management.

We look forward to a great season!
