Editorial:

ENGLISH IS NOT ONLY FOR ENGLAND As the reality of the Brexit vote becomes apparent it’s important to remember that English is a truly global language. There are versions of English as a first and second language all over the world. Here are a few facts about English around the world:

• English is an official language in 67 countries.

• There are more English speakers in France than there are in Australia.

• There are 10 million English speakers in Spain, and the same number in China.

• India has more than double the number of English speakers than there are in the UK.

English has many variants, from American English, Singaporean English, Indian English, even the English spoken in Liverpool is very different to that of London. All these Englishes are valid in our globalised world. While ‘the Queen’s English’ or ‘BBC English’ is often thought of as the correct way to speak, the reality is that we don’t speak like that and English is a flexible language allowing for regional and international varieties. Even the listenings for the Cambridge exams have accents from different countries from Australia to Edinburgh.

At Taylor School we love all the English the world has to offer and we want you to explore the world in search of your personal version of English (as I did in Spanish with my Yorkshire accent and Asturian vocabulary!).

AWESOME WORKSHOPS This year the primary children have done some fantastic workshops thanks to the hard work of Beth and Paloma. They made instruments, puppets, and cupcakes. They did projects and learnt all about science and geography. They even made the mosaic map for the front cover of the magazine.

EASTER EGG OLYMPICS The Taylor School Easter Egg Olympics is a La Florida tradition like the ‘fiestas’ and driving in circles looking for parking.

We have great fun planning the activities and the kids love finding the eggs and doing the various activities.

PUB QUIZ - THE WINNING TEAM This year we organised two pub quizzes and they were great fun for everyone who came. Make sure you don’t miss the next one in November. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be a student at the school and we have a prize for the winner. However, the winning isn’t the important thing, it's the fun of working together and meeting new people…. and of course speaking English.

To find out the date of the next one check for a poster in the bar Cuesta y CIA or check on our Facebook page.

SONGS FOR LEARNING All the teachers at Taylor school use songs in our lessons because they’re a great way to practice listening and enjoy music at the same time. But what do our teachers think are the best songs for learning English? (If you want a more active way to learn and listen to music try www.lyricstraining.com) !Paloma

I really like ‘Can't Stop the Feeling’, by Justin Timberlake. It’s about dancing with someone and feeling good. It has a catchy melody and the lyrics are really easy for kids to understand. They love it! And the video is very amusing to watch. I used it in class when working with the feelings and emotions unit and I think it was very useful.

!Liz

There are so many songs that you can use in English classes but I always try to choose songs which have very clear lyrics (The Beatles, Suzanne Vega for example) and also that tell a story because they use narrative tenses and a wider range of vocabulary. I particularly like 'Vincent' by Don Maclean an American singer-songwriter whose most famous hit was 'American Pie'. His song 'Vincent' is much less known but it is like a beautiful poem which tells the story of the life of Van Gogh and has lots of vocabulary related to painting, colours, shapes and art in general, as well as describing Van Gogh's emotional problems. On Youtube there are some videos which show many

of Van Gogh's masterpieces while you listen to the song which I think really helps you to focus on the words and remember them.

!Dave

I really like the song Dry Your Eyes by The Streets. The Streets sing in a sort of rapping style that’s similar to talking. It’s a beautiful song about the moment at the end of a relationship. It has lots of vocabulary about relationships and it uses the present simple. The song is so powerful it really takes you into that terrible moment in a very real way.

!

Billy

A great song for teaching is Common People by Pulp. The lyrics are really funny and it can lead to discussion about the class system and inequality in the UK. Teachers can use it to practice the past simple for narratives. Pulp were big in the 90s along with other ‘Brit Pop’ bands like Oasis, Blur and Radiohead.

!John

One song I like to use is Blur’s Parklife. It’s not primarily because of the grammar or

the vocabulary (although the vocabulary is great) so much as for the cultural importance. It’s one way to introduce students to brit-pop/cool Britannia and that part of the recent cultural history of the UK. It’s got some great lyrics, and they’re often quite unexpected… For example, “Who’s that gut lord marching… you should cut down on your pork life mate, get some exercise”. It can also lead to

some nice discussion about what the lyrics mean… I’m not sure myself so there are no wrong answers, which is often great fun.

!Bea

I like to use “Friday I’m in Love” by The Cure. The singer of the band is Robert Smith and he always used to dress like a ‘goth’ even though the style of his music is basically pop. I think it’s a nice song, easy to understand and with a catchy tune. It uses the present simple tense a lot and it lists the days of the week so I use it with elementary levels. And of course everybody loves Fridays!

!Beth

I love the song, 'I used to wait' by Arcade Fire, a Canadian Indie/Rock band. They often talk about modernity, the problems with growing up in a technological world and how modern times have changed relationships with people and with the world. This song in particular is about how communication has changed, specifically how we used to send and wait for letters to people we love and the nostalgia of those times, since most of us don't do it anymore. 'Used to' is a difficult grammatical form for English language learners to master and this song uses it clearly and repeats it a lot which is great for learning. I would listen to this song while driving in the rain in February while imagining summer days.

The Crazy Brothers by brothers Iván and Dani We are brothers so we started a band in our bedroom, eight years ago. We play rock music in the style of our father who is a famous musician 'The Black Panther'. Dani is guitarist and Iván plays the drums, his name in the band is 'The Resuscitated Man'.

What they've done so far: We have done busking, charity events and in one competition we won $30,000.

Plans for the future: If we win The Voice we will fly to Italy and be famous. You can find out more about the band in Youtube, Instagram and Facebook.

!The Cowboys by Miguel C. The Cowboys met in a nightclub in 2013. There are three members in the band: Crazy Horse who is from Canada, he plays the drums. Bad Cowboy who is from Egypt and came to Spain to work in a disco. He plays the guitar. The singer is Good Donkey who is from China. He came to Spain to work in a garage and after he joined the band.

What they've done so far: The Cowboys won X Factor in 2015, they have played many concerts and won a Grammy.

The future: We want to win The Voice and do an international tour. Look for us on Instagram and Facebook.

THE VOICE

The Lion's Feathers by Javier, Marcos and Miguel V. The band members are The Saddy Clown, who has been playing the electric violin since he was ten years old, he also like playing mini-golf. The Wild Pianist, who was doing busking in the street when he met the Saddy Clown, we only know that his true name starts with the letter M. And the last boy to join the band is The Yellow Snake. He was at the entrance to Decathlon carrying a bass guitar when Saddy Clown and the Wild Pianist saw him and asked him to play it. He played very well and they signed him.

Plans for the future: If we win The Voice 2017 we will do a world tour, especially in China, to meet all our fans. We hope to win this competition. I think we can do this. We would like to end poverty in the world. 'That is my dream'...by Yellow Snake.

!The Cities by Ale, Carlota and Laura When Alejandra, Carlota and Laura met, they had a great idea...to form a band. They had a little competition between them to find out the talents of the members of the group. When the competition finished the three girls discovered their different talents. Laura is an amazing pianist, Caty is fantastic when she plays the guitar and Ale is the best when she is singing. The band have been together for five years

What they've done so far: A lot of videos on Youtube and many different shows in different countries. We have five prizes and last year we won The Voice 2016.

Plans and dreams for the future: When we win an important competition we will add a new person to the group. If we win The Voice 2017 we will go to Korea to do an international concert.

BEST BEACH REVIEWS FOR THIS SUMMER SEASON !

Luanco Beach: Home of 'La Ramblona'! (4 stars)

This is a sandy beach in the village of Luanco which always has a lot of people in the summer. You can make friends there and it is easy to go there with your friends by bus from Oviedo. Luanco is the last stop, the journey takes about 50 minutes. It has a high wall in the marine port called La Ramblona where you can jump off into the sea and have fun.

!San Lorenzo Beach: The famous beach of Gijón (4.5 stars)

This beach is in the centre of the city, it is one of the most famous beaches in Asturias and very long. It is connected to the River Piles and you can also walk to the Aquarium of Gijón. On the beach you can find volleyball courts, inflatable castles, umbrellas, showers and changing rooms (like tents). In August people make very good sand sculptures and ask for money.

!Salinas Beach: A Surfer's Paradise! (3 stars)

Salinas is a town beach in Castrillon. It's quite long (2,100m) with very good waves for surfers. There are many surf camps and competitions in the summer, and you can surf there all year. You

can rent surfboards and wetsuits. Sometimes the sea is rough so you have to swim carefully. For the safety of the people there are always lifeguards and coloured flags. If you are hungry there are lots of ice cream shops and bars. (The turrón ice cream is the best, it has almond flavour). It is a bit polluted sometimes (lots of cans on the sand). There are showers and drinking water and you can go by bus from Oviedo. In 2012 this beach won the blue flag prize, that is the 'Oscar' of the beach.

Cuevas del Mar: A protected beach (5 stars)

This beach is in Llanes. There are special caves and when the tide comes in, it makes like a swimming pool inside the caves and you can jump and see a lot of fish. The little problem is there are a lot of rocks. Near this beach is a small hippie bar and it's cool. The bar makes a jumble sale every year where the clothes and jewellry are very cheap.

! Espasa: Dinosaur Beach! (4 stars)

This beach is between Colunga and Caravia, and if you do a short walk on a trail through a big forest of Eucalyptus you will find some rocks by the sea with dinosaur footprints! You can bring your pet here. (In Colunga you can visit the Jurassic Museum which is very interesting and you can have a great day with your family). You can find crabs and starfish on the sand and the sea is calm for swimming.

!Doniños Beach: A Galician beach (4 stars)

Doniños is a well-known and dangerous beach located in Ferrol (A Coruña) where there have been many accidents because the waves are huge and it is extremely windy. In the summer a lot of competitions are celebrated here, usually kite-surfing or surfing. It isn't easy to find the green flag at this beach, normally it is the red one. Two years ago a lifeguard gave his life when some teenagers went into the sea. He was able to save two guys. You can go to this beach by bicycle or by car and there is a viewpoint above the beach with fantastic views of the sea. It is one of my favourite beaches. (by Noelia)

Imagine you are going to spend the next 24 hours in Asturias, what should you visit? What should you see? Where should you go? Here we give you some ideas about what you can do in one day.

9:00p.m – Arrive in Oviedo. If you are hungry, you could have dinner at Terra Astur, where you can have all kinds of typical Asturian food at a reasonable price, such as a cachopo (2 huge, thin pieces of steak with some cheese and ham between them which looks like a “schnitzel”), Asturian cheeses and cider. You will be amazed by the way they serve it here.

If you are not too tired, you can go and see the cathedral (from the outside, because it will be closed) before going to a local disco, called “Tribeca”, where all the teenagers hang out together on Saturday nights.

10:00 a.m – For breakfast we recommend going to a local café, where you can try Spanish “hot chocolate with churros”

11:00 a.m – At this time you could choose between going to a Real Oviedo match, in the Tartiere Stadium, or visiting the old part of the city.

1:00 p.m – Before heading out of Oviedo you shouldn’t miss the sight of the city from the top of Mount Naranco, you will be amazed! You will soon

notice the Calatrava, a big white building and lots of mountains surrounding the place.

3 p.m – You can choose between going to the mountains and visiting the coast; but first you should eat in any restaurant you like the look of. But we warn you not to eat a fabada if you are going to the mountains by car or swimming.

4:30 p.m – If you decide to go to the mountains, you should wear comfortable clothes and make sure you have enough water in your backpack. However, if you decide to go to the beach, our personal recommendation is Gulpiyuri. This very special beach is inland where the water comes through caves under the cliffs, giving you this beautiful image.

9:00p.m – Don’t forget to buy Oviedo’s very famous Moscovitas, a kind of crispy almond biscuit covered in chocolate, before leaving!

10:00p.m – Time to go! Have a safe trip! We hope you have enjoyed your trip to Asturias!
