Working to Stop Bullying at Work

Workplace Education continues to play a central role in the Committee on Workplace Climate and Bullying. The group includes the five largest labor unions on campus, the Ombuds Office, the Office for Equal Opportunity and Diversity, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, several professors, and senior administrators. Last spring, the Coalition conducted a campus-wide survey of employees about their experiences of bullying. Results of the workplace bullying survey were reported to the campus in the fall. The Committee is now working on three initiatives: instituting a policy on workplace bullying; developing a campus-wide educational campaign; and sponsoring focus groups. In the fall of 2013, we plan to roll out courses, workshops, support groups, and forums to address workplace bullying on campus. And LMWEP continues to work with departments on workplace civility initiatives. This spring, we are offering a course on bystander intervention called “Everyone Matters”—see the course description for information about how you can help create a campus free from bullying.

Major New Initiative with USA/MTA

We are deepening our connection with the University Staff Association/MTA, a long-time core partner of Workplace Education. This spring, we are offering two new courses — Dreamweaver and MS Access — for USA members. (See descriptions in this course flyer.) In addition, LMWEP and USA/MTA are partnering to offer a sequence of courses geared exclusively to USA members; these will be publicized later this spring through USA’s website and listserv. Counseling services geared to USA members will also be offered. The new services are part of a USA/MTA career ladder initiative; its goal is for campus departments to recognize the certificates awarded in courses when promoting USA members.

Workplace Wellness

Workplace Education helped the Residential Life department set up its successful Wellness Program in the 1990s. Now we are bringing that focus on wellness to more workers. We are developing new wellness partnerships with exciting joint ventures for the future. Check out LMWEP’s workplace wellness workshops offered this spring. 25th Anniversary Celebration this Spring — Stay Tuned!
