CFor many, fasting may very well be one of the most feared and dreaded disciplines in the Christian lifestyle. For this very reason it is often one of the most under-utilized spiritual weapons Jesus left us. Believe me when I say that Satan, the enemy of our souls, fears fasting far more than any of us! Why is that? This is true because when we engage in a Biblical fast, we are mak-ing a bold declaration of our absolute depen-dency on God. Biblical fasting can bring about much-needed breakthroughs, freshness in our relationship with Jesus, new insights into Scrip-tural truth, greater health to our physical bodies, and so much more.

I grew up believing that I would NEVER master making this discipline a part of my lifestyle as a Christ-follower. I was far more willing to give God my time, my money, and even my life as a martyr before giving up my meals! And yet, years later, after seeing the undeniable benefits and wisdom of seeking God through a Biblical fast, I actually look forward to engaging in this discipline. Fasting is not easy; it should not be entered into flippantly. It is not a “twist God’s arm” maneuver. It is simply something every Christian should move towards incorporating into their lives.

Jesus modeled for us the discipline of fasting and told us that when He left His earthly assign-ment His followers would most certainly fast

(Matthew 9:14-15). What better time to follow the example of Jesus in seek-ing God for greater direction and intimacy than the start of a new year. I sincerely hope you will join me and many other in our church family on this spiritual journey, January 8–28.

There are numbers of practical resources we’ve made available in our Resource Center, as well as on our website (www.elimgospel.org), that will help you navigate through your custom-ized fast. We will also be hosting several prayer events designed to encourage and strengthen you during your fast. There is nothing worse than trying to fast without filling a good portion of that time with prayer. We are after spiritual saturation not physical starvation.

Remember, the goal is not to be rigid or rebel-lious about this fast, just intentional. I like what Dr. Lance Wallnau says, “The divided heart tries what the undivided heart does.” Not everyone will choose the same type of fast, fast for the same length of time, or even fast for the same reasons, but as we pursue God “as one,” I guar-antee the spiritual climate of our church and your life will change for the better!

Hungry for Him,JONaH: When Judgment and Grace Collide

What do we have in common with a guy in the Bible by the name of Jonah? After all, Jonah was an Old Testa-ment prophet who lived more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. The truth is, however, that his life experiences and specific assignment from the Lord have incredible similarities with us today. Jonah was called of God to be a shining light to a people living in great darkness. Not unlike many of us, Jonah was very reluctant to step out and obey God’s leading. The book of Jonah and this teaching series will give us a fresh look at the call of God on our lives, God’s amaz-ing sovereignty, and most importantly, His relentlessly extravagant grace available for those who will turn to Him!

FrOm PastOr JOsH ON Our JaNuary “BE” sEriEs There is a reason we are called human beings and not human doings. “In Him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28). What we do does not determine who we are as much as who we are determines what we do. This New Year many of us will be setting new goals and resolutions for things we want to do. I’d like us to take a step back beneath the “doing” and talk about the kind of people God has called us to “be.” All throughout the Bible, God gives us clarity as to what we are to be…be one, be fruitful, be holy, be filled, be anxious for nothing, be strong & courageous, etc. Each week during this 6-part series (Jan. 1–Feb. 5) we’ll be looking at one of these exhortations found in Scripture.

a WOrd from PastOr JOsH:

Join us for this series February 12–March 18 as we allow the Holy Spirit to stretch our capacity to love the lost people in our lives that grip God’s heart.

It has been said that fasting without praying is little more than dieting. This January as we fast together, I encour-age you to do so much more than abstain from some-thing. I invite you to change the course of history with us; I invite you to impact nations without even setting foot in them; I invite you to see your neighborhood, your work, your school, and your loved ones transformed by the love of Christ. How? Through prayer. You and I have access; a direct line to the God of the universe through prayer. He is listening intently to us! So, this January, let’s bring to Him our old hopes, our dreams that we’ve packed away, and our hopeless situations that we’ve learned to live with. Let us cry out to Him for justice to the injustices around us, for His Kingdom to come in a measure that we’ve never seen, and for his presence to infuse our daily lives! He is able and willing.

We are excited to announce that, during the fast, we will host extend prayer times and sessions in the oasis prayer room. Last year, you helped us raise over $30,000 to renovate our little prayer closet into a comfortable and functional prayer center. This year, take advantage of that resource and join us for some of the many prayer opportunities available. Here is a snapshot of what cor-porate prayer at EGC will look like in January:

For the fast, the Oasis Prayer Room will be open 24/7! This means that you can enjoy a comfortable place to seek God and pray in Oasis at any time of the day or night! When there is not a live set of corporate prayer in progress, we stream the IHOP prayer room or play a worship Cd. Oasis is accessible by the lower level door on the northeast corner of the church, below the offices.

We believe that it is important to involve children and whole families in prayer. So, for the three weeks of the fast, Tarah

Goodson and Pastor doug Cowburn will be hosting weekly prayer sessions specifically geared towards families and chil-dren. Tarah will host sessions for mothers and young children. Pastor doug will host sessions geared towards whole families with children. Check out the Oasis calendar online to find out session times (www.elimgospel.org).

We need to be saturated in the Word of God. That’s why the first weekend of the fast, we will publicly read through the en-tire New Testament in oasis. Over a 24 hour period, volunteers will read scripture out loud in hour-long segments to those in the prayer room. You are welcome to come and hear the Word; Friday the 13th, 8pm to Saturday the 14th, 8pm. If you’d like to be a scripture reader, sign up at volunteer central today!

The second weekend of the fast, we will come together for 2 hours of corporate prayer. Join us in the youth room on Friday, Jan 20, 7-9pm. Pastor Josh and I will lead us in in a time of focusing on God’s infinite nature and contending for the King-dom of God to invade our lives, our families, our church, and our world!

To top it all off, we will end out our fast with 24 hours of live, non-stop prayer in Oasis, Friday the 27th at 7pm to Saturday the 28th at 7pm. This 24 hours will be divided into 2-hour sets with different topics and teams. You won’t want to miss this powerful time of prayer. You’re welcome to come and visit any time and stay however long you’d like. Check out the Oasis calendar online for details of the times and topics. To find the Oasis calendar, go to our website, elimgospel.org, click on “ministries”, then “prayer.”

God is good, so let’s expect great things from Him this New Year! We hope to see you in oasis sometime this month. We’re shaping history together! – NatE HiNtON, Oasis & Worship Director

We are now rounding out the fall semester. Back in Au-gust and September we were able to serve around 200 international students, providing them with furniture and household items. Since then we have hosted some of those same students at our international student picnic in September, in our homes for Thanksgiving dinner, and again at our 2nd annual Christmas Celebration Dinner.

Our Christmas Celebration Dinner was held on Friday, December 2, in the youth room right here at EGC. We considered the event to be a tremendous success as we hosted 36 students and their families (mostly first-time guests), as well as recruited a number of EGC individu-als and families to host and serve during the event. Over the course of the evening we had dinner together, sang Christmas songs, exchanged culture, played a few games and heard the Gospel message presented by EGC’s own Todd Cavanaugh. We received a lot of positive feedback from our guests and volunteers, and we are now work-ing to transition some of our international friends into our investigative Bible studies.

Our team is looking forward to the next few months as we continue to establish friendships with many new students. Last year in the spring semester, we had several students make the decision to follow Jesus Christ, some of whom were baptized a couple of months later on Easter morn-ing at EGC. Some of those same students also received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and are now bringing friends to our Bible study groups. As a matter of fact, one of those students even went through all of the Journey classes and was recently received into membership at EGC. All of those steps are “wins” that we are celebrating, and we expect a similar harvest during this coming spring semester.

I want to encourage you to participate with us as we move into the new year. Your investment of time means that we can serve more students and do so with greater excellence.

The following are a couple of upcoming opportunities where you can get involved:

suNday, JaNuary 22: We will be hosting students for a luncheon in our homes after the second service. You can prepare a dish of food to share and visit one of our team leaders’ homes. This is an opportunity to shadow our team leaders and in the process, meet a few international students. We can also use help in trans-porting students to and from Rochester.

saturday, FEBruary 18: We will be hosting our annual win-ter outing at Mendon Ponds Park. Bring some food to share. Help with transportation. Bring some sleds and take on the frozen hills. We will begin at 11am at the East Lodge on Canfield Rd.

suNday, aPriL 1: We will be hosting our 2nd annual Easter Celebration themed “Why Easter?”. The event will be held at Elim Gospel Church in the Youth Wing following the second service.

For more information on any of these opportu-nities, please contact Greg Ross at [email protected] or call 585-519-3975.

The following is an update from EGC’s International Student Ministries that is reaching the nations in our own back yard.

Since joining the EGC family over 13 years ago, Greg and Anne Brower have applied their skills and gifts to serve EGC in multiple ways. In addition to facilitating Financial Peace University this New Year (see page 14 for more information), they are involved in several other areas that help our church function in its fullest capacity. While Greg is part of men’s ministry and Anne is part of a Wednesday morning prayer group, together they also serve as EGC facilities consultants, service hosts/greeters, and lay pastor assistants in the Honeoye Falls region.

Greg and Anne, who moved to New York from Michigan with their two daughters in 1996, have been serving in the Church for many years. Greg comments, “As a member it is our responsibility—help the Church body. That is what we are to do.” “Back in the 90’s, we had the blessing of being mentored by Victor Matthews, a former Baptist Seminary Professor,” Anne adds. “He taught us about spiritual warfare, deliverance, prayer, and freedom in Christ. We became involved in the Vineyard Church through Victor, and we have not been the same since then. We have desired a closer relationship with God and to move in His power! I would say that, out of this, we desire to serve because this is where FAITH comes alive!”

When asked what they enjoy most about serving, Anne shared, “Faith without works is dead... I think there are seasons when we need to pull back and recuperate or get our life in order, but those times don’t last forever... Then we need to be giving out or we can become oppressed, depressed, stagnant... Our involvement with FPU has come from doing it the wrong way for many years. We desire to see others get right financially and when they ‘get it,’ it is very satisfying! We are all for the Body of Christ to be debt free and living in financial freedom.”

Together, Greg and Anne own G d Brower Inc. (a Manufacturers Rep company for the Hospitality, Commercial (office), Education, and Healthcare markets) that represents over 15 different companies in Upstate NY and West-ern PA. Greg handles all the furnishing and Anne oversees the carpet and artwork portion of the business. This is all experience that the couple applies to their service to EGC as facilities consultants. Anne comments, “…Facility environment affects people in ways they may not even be aware of. Color, art, furniture and function are all ways we take a facility for granted. Environment can affect a person’s mood, productivity and whether they even want to be there or not. We enjoy using our skills to improve the environment at EGC.”

While the Browers manage a full schedule, they also make time for family and fun. Greg and Anne enjoy spend-ing time with their children and grandchildren, as well as being outdoors—Greg loves to hunt and Anne loves to garden. They also enjoy reading, spending time with friends, and kayaking. Anne adds, “We work hard and we like to play hard!”

Thank you, Browers, for blessing EGC with your hearts to serve!

The purpose of Care Connection is to put the love of Christ into action and be His hands extended to our neighbors — to connect with and help meet the needs of those around us.

Then the King will say…“Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you some-thing to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:34–40

“David and I have been involved in home groups for many years. We have hosted ones together, and also separately. It proves to be a wonderful source of fellowship, encouragement, and strengthening one another in the Lord. The last three sessions we joined a group, and because of what God does through these gatherings, we have been so uplifted and blessed with the sharing of the Word, our times together in prayer for each other and prayer for our Church body and leaders. We are already looking forward to the groups starting up again in January! It is an arm of the Church body whereby each one can bless and be blessed.” — mariE sPENCEr

James: Mercy Triumphs by Beth MooreJames, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a dis-ciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hard-ship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the danger of the tongue, humility, and prayer.

“FPU gave me the tools to get control of my spending, and my saving. For me, these two strike a delicate balance, especially when first learn-ing how to adjust my habits. My paper budget is the surest way to do that; it’s my grounding for all things fanciful. And learning about it is presented in a positive environment, with lots of humor and sup-port. This course really helped me see how I wasn’t helping myself! Good stuff.” — diaNE POWELL

“Financial Peace emphasizes living on a written budget, something we had not done in the past. This has proved to be one of the most difficult dis-ciplines to master. But dave Ramsey is right, that if you don’t tell your money what to do, you’ll won-der where it went. Budgeting is simply naming every dollar at the beginning of the month and assigning it a place. If you follow the principles, it works!” — diaNE & miCHaEL BrauN

“‘Live like no one else so that you can live like no one else.’ dave Ramsey’s mantra had come full circle. We had completed Financial Peace University and were applying its principles to our spending. We drafted a budget, estab-lished our emergency fund, and began to pay down our debt. We knew that if we kept at it, we could maintain a relatively comfortable lifestyle and eventually be debt free. And then we read Radical a book by david Platt, which had provided the foundation for a series of messages from the leadership team at EGC. Our hearts were pricked by the Holy Spirit and we knew that we needed to respond to this call of God on our lives. But with that came the terrible realization that we were not free to live the radical life to its fullest because of the financial debt we still carried. Our money, and as a result, much of our time, was owed to someone other than our precious Lord, and the truth that

one cannot serve both God and ‘mammon’ hit us hard. Our spirits grieved. We repented before the Lord, re-ex-amined our budget under the lens of the principles we had learned in FPU, and sublet our comfortable townhome so that we could rent something less expensive and reduce our living expenses by several hundred dollars each month. This required a difficult adjustment to the standard of living we had grown accustomed to, but we knew that every cent applied to our debt would significantly reduce the time it would take to pay it off. Our goal is to be debt-free in 2 years so that we can be truly free to live radically for Jesus. Both Biblical and practical, FPU provided us with many of the tools we’ll need to achieve that goal, and in tandem with our EGC church family, the encourage-ment to keep at it until we have victory!”

GO We are not only called to get people saved but also to live out our faith in transforming the cultures around us. Ideas are transformational either for good or evil. “As a man think in his own heart so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). That is why Romans 12:2 encourages us not to be “conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.” Our mind is renewed when we read over and meditate on God’s Word and live out what we read. In Isa-iah 40:31, we are told that those who wait on the Lord shall renew (exchange) their strength. Regularly spending time in the Word of God, in His presence, and in fellowship with one another are powerful ways leading to transformation in our own lives, our families, our communities and beyond. Psalm 107:23-24 says, “Those who go down to the sea

in ships, who do business in great waters, they shall see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.” As we are being transformed by the renewing of our mind in God’s Word and by hosting His Presence, we are ready to step out into the deep waters to see His miracles. As we reach out to the community around us, to the students on our campuses, to the most unreached and wherever God leads, we are seeing the works of the devil destroyed and Jesus glorified. Our faith is not a once-a-week experience, but a 24-hour-a-day walk with Jesus that impacts every-thing we do, regardless of our occupations. We are full-time disciples of Jesus determined to bring glory to God in every aspect of our lives and seeing transformation in our culture and the nations wherever we go.

After many months of planning, preparations, casting vision, and raising funds, the day has finally come! HIF now holds two services at two opposite ends of the city. Pastor Nelson is taking the helm and new people already have started attending. december 4 was our launching service, with both congregations together at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in MyDinh, Hanoi. Last Sunday we had our first separate services since the launch. As we say in Asia, “same same but different,” both sites will feel like HIF but are slightly different. At last, this Christmas season we can announce, there is room in the inn!

Care Collection:

At Care Collection I got to meet so many new people, who were either working at the church or there to receive the food. It was wonderful to see how grateful they all were. We were able to serve so many people and it reminded me of how much God loves it when His children use the blessing He has placed on their lives to bless others. God can use everyone to expand His kingdom, even me.

This fall our Outbreak teens competed to see which Cadre could col-lect the most Thanksgiving food items. At the end of their competition they bagged up all of the food and took it to Rochester to distribute to families in need. Check out some of the stories and moments captured from this great event!

Testimonies

We were able to serve numerous families as well as stock the food pantry at Joy Community Church in Rochester. This was an awesome experience for all of our youth. We took 34 youth and adults to serve the food and not one of them left the same.

We had a blast at the first an-nual Young Adults Christmas Bash on Friday, December 9. The energy and creativity in the room was palpable as eight teams and over 60 students competed for the grand prize in the Gingerbread Item Competition. Teams from RIT, SUNY Geneseo, BASIC College Ministries, Campus Target Min-istries, EGC community groups, and other students and graduates from around the Rochester area all showed great team spirit and created edible masterpieces. The Ugly Sweater Fashion show was also a great success, resembling the ‘best of the best’ from the last 50 years.

Thanks to all who participated and helped to make this night such a blast.

Join us on Wednesday, February 8, for our next Young Adult Gathering. We have a special treat planned for that evening as leaders from around Elim will be join-ing us for a Q&A session. You will be able to submit your questions anonymously via text message and have them answered by an experienced leader with a heart to see you succeed. This is going to be a lot of fun, and a great time of learning and discovery together.

scripture tells us that a group of believers is meant to work together, like how the various parts of our bodies work together; each has a different

function, but all are needed to be healthy. Romans 12:4–8 says, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

God has made each of us unique…with different skills, spiritual gifts, education, life experience, personalities, etc. And each of us is needed to

make our church body whole and healthy—each offering ourselves “as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1).

Where do you fit in at EGC? How does God want to use the unique YOU to serve the rest of our church body? Here are some current areas

where you could serve. Is one of them for you?

Our desire is to provide localized care to our church family through these qualified leaders.

Pastor Eric Scott leads the Lay Pastors as part of the Care Ministry. The EGC Directory lists the people in your region.
