Taiwan –where automakers discover top-class total solutions
Other than traditional machines, another notable area of excellence of Taiwan manufacturers is in building industry-specific machine tools and tailor-made
machines. The versatility of Taiwan-made machines greatly differentiates them from standardized models. This edge in mechanical variation thus remains the main reason many international buyers have commissioned Taiwan makers to build purpose-built machines that matched their requirements.
The intelligent future of automotive industryHaving examined the current condition of Taiwan-made machine tools, the next step is to decipher the prospects of Taiwan’s automobile manufacturing chain and learn how it contributes to the global auto sector. It is commonly agreed that “digitalization” is transforming the entire automotive chain - from design to production and then to sales and service. Continuous and automated digital planning and self-learning production systems are defining the future trends
of automotive supply chain. Taiwan’s diverse ICT industry is well-prepared to marry its world-leading technological know-how to the manufacturing might of the automobile sector. Automation solutions providers, such as Delta, Advantech, Fair Friend Group, and industrial robotic expert HIWIN, have established 360-degree connectivity to merge software into automation solutions, which sharpen the application of IIoT(Industrial Internet of Things).
As the car of the future is designed to communicate with the vast mobility network, every vehicle, part, and engine becomes a source for information
transmission. In response to this trend, system providers and machine tool manufacturers are making efforts to successfully connect customers,
equipment, manufacturing, and production management through the integration of IIoT technology, advanced automation solutions, and a CNC system. It is undeniably evident that Taiwan’s industrial digitalization capacity is flourishing, and a growing number of
traditional machine tool manufacturers are transforming themselves into total solution strategists.
In the not-so-distant future, Taiwan-made machine tools equipped with intelligent systems will be in step with fully autonomous auto and low-emission green automotive industry trends. From the fascinating machine tools to the world-renowned ICT/IIoT technology, Taiwan is very much qualified to provide mid- to high-end machine tools and
systems for the revolving sector. Meanwhile, there are certainly abundant reasons for global
automakers to establish production ties with Taiwan today.
machines are dedicated to machining processes like boring and mold die machining. These manufacturers constantly supply machines for production of engines, aluminum wheels, head lights, doors, bumpers, etc.
Innovation breeding edge-cutting/tailor-made machinesA great number of machine builders in Taiwan have cultivated mature technology in mill-turn and vertical machines, as these small-to-mid sized machine tools were among the earliest equipment being developed, and facilitated in the automobile sector. Pioneering manufacturer Tongtai has nearly half a century of experience in developing CNCs. Its success relies on its global recognition of automotive manufacturing machine tools, which account for 40-50% of its sales revenue. As a new era in automobile manufacturing unfolds, sophisticated machinery builders in Taiwan will continue to strengthen capacity to create state-of-the-art CNC lathes and multitasking centers so as to stay ahead of the current trends which emphasize light-weight, green, and composite-built vehicles.

The automotive industry is experiencing a complete revolution today as burgeoning new trends in manufacturing are transforming the entire sector. Autos today are the embodiments of light-weight strategy, sustainable energy, autonomous system and industrial intelligence. These technologies helped trigger a comprehensive upgrade in the automobile production line.
Taiwan’s manufacturers have demonstrated fruitful results in building high-end machine tools to supply the global production chain. In 2015 Taiwan was ranked 7th top producer and 5th top exporter of machine tools globally, while a large proportion of Taiwan-made machines contributed to various automotive applications.
A distinguishing nature of MiT (made-in-Taiwan) machines Sharing a similar nature of the island’s diverse history, the Taiwan machine tool industry has developed its own unique characteristics. Being the receiver of technologies from the first-tier industrial countries in the past centuries, the
industry absorbed much knowledge and infused it with indigenous skills and innovations.
Taiwan’s manufacturers have enriched their machine tools with remarkable precision and stability. With such capability, a number of machine tool manufacturers are tapped to be major OEMs for global automotive suppliers. MiT machine tools, such as 5-axis CNCs, multitasking CNCs, mill-turn CNCs, vertical CNCs, double-column machining centers, and grinders are being facilitated in car component manufacturing as well as mold and die tooling.
Automotive machinery from upstream to downstreamOne important factor that has helped fuel growth in the Taiwan machine tool sector is the concentration of industrial clusters, which makes resources and components highly attainable. These industrial clusters are the backbone of international auto supply chain. They also have another function: to integrate the machine sectors vertically. Taiwan provides a one-stop vertical solution for automotive manufacturers, from upstream metal forming equipment to mid/
downstream lathes, CNCs, cutting/boring tools, and components. Some of the machining applications and solutions offered by Taiwan machine builders for the automotive manufacturing sector are as follows:
Dedication to advancing metal forming technologySheet metal forming is a process of great importance to modern automotive industry; and Taiwan is full of outstanding metal forming equipment builders who can provide the best solutions for high volume production of autos involving sheet metal. Among them are hydraulic press builders DEES and Chin Fong, who hold a significant share of the Asian auto manufacturing market.
They supply stable hydraulic presses to several plants in China and also to multinational automobile companies and service centers globally.
In recent years these manufacturers have been upgrading their machines to embrace the upheavals in the sector. For example, the introduction of simulation system-integrated servo hydraulic presses effectively assisted users in complying with the broadening application demands in metal forming industry. High-performing servo mechanical presses, meanwhile, attained the goal of energy efficiency in auto manufacturing, helping automakers reduce costs and carbon
footprint.
The leaders in five-axis machine tools Five-axis CNCs are increasingly becoming a signature of the new-generation Taiwan machine builders. Having recognized the benefits of five-axis CNCs
in machining, Taiwan machine builders, together with the premier research institution Industrial Technology Research Institute, have allied to engage in innovation of five-axis CNCs. The goal is to maintain high quality while
vibration is eliminated during production, and also to correct the limits of conventional three-axis CNC, further consolidate excellent cutting performance, and increase productivity substantially.
Today, five-axis experts, such as APEC and KEN, are capable of developing
advanced models of 5-axis machining centers for automotive industry. Their

The 2008 Crisis on a Global Scale and in Italy
The Crisis in Western countries led to a drop of car production between 2008 and 2009 (Table 1). In 2009, the global utilization of plants was just 63.7%.
Western Europe’s production dropped after the crisis by 19.4%. Over the same period, Italian production dropped by 28% from 910,860 units to 661,100 units (Figure 1).
Page 6
Table 1: World Production Breakdown by Geographic Macro-area
Table 2: Global Utilization of Plant (%)
Figure 1: Italian Vehicles Production Breakdown by Category (units, 2007-2009)
Despite the fact that 25% of annual vehicle production is still made in Europe, the share of European production in global production fell constantly from what used to be 35% in the year 2000. The United Kingdom, France and Italy were the major contributors to the decline in European production.
Germany remains the most successful producer in Europe, now producing roughly 30% of total European vehicles. France lost its rank in favor of Spain. And the emerging region of Central Eastern Europe is becoming the manufacturing arm of Western Europe. Poland and the Czech Republic in recent years have surpassed Italy as major production locations.
Both Poland and the Czech Republic have benefited from the boom in the production of the small models of FIAT. FIAT’s Polish factory was producing at full capacity even during the crisis. This was due to the effect of the incentives introduced in Italy and Germany to favor the small and low-emission models such as the FIAT 500 and Panda.
Germany and Italy, two of the most important traditional automotive producers, present 2 different stories. Production in Italy, linked strictly to the production of the FIAT Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Group and the Volkswagen Group. No other major foreign OEMs is producing in Italy. The FCA Group, one of the top 10 players in the world has cut their production in the last decade. Italy is one of the countries badly affected by the crisis.
Although production at the global level recovered fast to +26% the following year, production in Italy grew 2%. By contrast, production in Germany and France grew by 13% and 9% respectively.
Poland and Brazil become major production locations for the Italian automaker globally. The substantial investment of FIAT in Serbia, the Kragujevac plant, will make what was once Italian production more globalized.
