REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY NUTRITION PROGRAMME FOR SEPTEMBER 2017 (North Goa) 1. DATE: 1 st September 2017 PLACE: Antenatal OPD, (Candolim PHC). CONDUCTED BY: MRS ZHENYA D’LIMA LOBO (NUTRITION OFFICER) A Nutrition education programme was conducted during antenatal OPD, Candolim PHC, for the pregnant mothers. The nutrition officer delivered lecture on importance of nutrition during pregnancy and lactation period. Topics highlighted were balanced diet, healthy eating habits, importance of healthy breakfast, water, postnatal care, micronutrients important during pregnancy and lactation (iron and calcium) deficiencies and food sources. A Nutrition education programme was conducted during antenatal OPD, Candolim PHC, for the

pregnant mothers. The nutrition officer delivered lecture on importance of nutrition during

pregnancy and lactation period. Topics highlighted were balanced diet, healthy eating habits,

importance of healthy breakfast, water, postnatal care, micronutrients important during pregnancy

and lactation (iron and calcium) deficiencies and food sources. Also importance of breastfeeding

and its benefits for child and mother, techniques and positions of breastfeeding, initiation of

breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding, expression of breast milk, hygiene during breastfeeding

were discussed. Preparation of homemade complimentary foods for infants and lactogenic foods

which help to increase the supply of breast milk were discussed. Homemade cerelac recipe was

explained to the beneficiaries. The session was attended by 33 mothers. The PHN and RMNCH+A

counselor were present. It was an interactive session where the audience also asked many questions to

which their queries were answered.

A nutrition education programme was conducted during the “Natiional Nutrition Week 2017” at

GPS Vithalapur, Karapur, for students of standard 1st- 4

th. In view of educating them about

importance of nutrition since they are in the childhood phase and this is a very crucial period for

their healthy growth and development and thus require special attention to macro as well as micro

nutrients, the assistant nutrition officer gave a talk on balanced diet for children, healthy eating

practices, vitamin A, importance of water, healthy breakfast, ill effects of junk food and lifestyle

diseases. A total of 150 students and 9 teachers were present. It was an interactive session where the

audience asked many questions to which their queries were answered.

In view of National Nutrition week a nutrition education programme was conducted along with the

ICDS Mapusa sector and Aldona PHC at Carona anganwadi, for the mothers of children. The

nutrition officer delivered a talk on importance of nutrition and balance diet for children,

adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers. Other topics highlighted were importance of water,

importance of breakfast, healthy eating habits in children and the deficiencies and sources of

important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and associated lifestyle diseases,

preparation of recipes keeping in mind the local availability and SNP provided to the beneficiaries

and homemade cerelac recipe. Ayush M/O from the PHC spoke on corrective eating habits. A

recipe competition was conducted where the mothers had to prepare a nutritious recipe on chana dal

and prizes were given based on taste, cost and nutritive value. Total 23 mothers participated in the

competition. EE, PHN and LHV from the PHC and Mukhya Sevika from the Mapusa sector were

present. The session was attended by 27 mothers. It was an interactive session where the audience

also asked many questions to which their queries were answered.

Baherilwada Anganwadi, Keri, for the mothers of preschool children. The assistant nutrition officer

gave a talk on importance of nutrition based on the nutrition week theme- “Optimal infant and young child

were also touched upon. The session was attended by 8 mothers of different age groups. Also Mukhyasevika

from sattari ICDS block spoke on gave ideas on how to make nutritious recopies using locally available

foods. ANM from (Keri) Parye sub centre, 16 anganwadi workers from Keri, Parye and Morle area were

present. The ladies attending the session were instructed to prepare nutritious recipes for a recipe competition

which were judged by the assistant nutrition officer and Mukhyasevika based on the following criteria-Taste

and presentation, cost and local availability, nutritive value. Out of 8 recipes, best 3 recipes were chosen as

the winners. The participants were also advised on how to improvise the recipes nutritionally after the prize

distribution. It was an interactive session where the audience also asked many questions to which their

queries were answered.

A nutrition education programme was conducted at Police quarters, Porvorim anganwadi, for the

mothers of children. The nutrition officer delivered a talk on importance of nutrition and balance

diet for children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers. Other topics highlighted were

importance of water, breakfast and the deficiencies and food sources of important nutrients like iron

and calcium, healthy eating habits in children, ill effects of junk food and associated lifestyle

diseases, preparation of recipes keeping in mind the local availability and SNP provided to the

beneficiaries and homemade cerelac recipe. The MPHW (M) from Penha de France subcentre was

present. The session was attended by 16 mothers. It was an interactive session where the audience

also asked many questions to which their queries.

children, adolescents ,pregnant and lactating mothers, importance of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding

and its benefits for mother and child, weaning foods, home made cerelac powder, importance of water,

breakfast, the deficiencies and sources of important nutrients like Iron ,vitamin A and calcium, deworming of

children, ill effects of junk food and lifestyle diseases. Tips on how to improvised and increase the

nutritional value of a recipe were also touched upon. The session was attended by 15 mothers of different

age groups. The Medical Officer I/C, Ayush doctor, Extension educator and LHV from Mayem PHC,

Sarpanch from Mayem panchayat, 2 mukhyasevikas from Bicholim ICDS block, 15 anganwadi workers

from (Bicholim and Mayem area) were present. The ladies attending the session were instructed to prepare

nutritious recipes based on ragi preparation for a recipe competition which were judged by the assistant

nutrition officer, medical officer, extension educator, ayush doctor and mukhyasevikas based on the

following criteria-Taste and presentation, cost and local availability, nutritive value. Out of 19 recipes, best 3

recipes were chosen as the winners. The participants were also advised on how to improvise the recipes

nutritionally after the prize distribution. It was an interactive session where the audience also asked many

questions to which their queries were answered.

anganwadi, for the mothers of children. The nutrition officer delivered a talk on importance of

the deficiencies and sources of important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and

associated lifestyle diseases, preparation of recipes keeping in mind the local availability and SNP

provided to the beneficiaries and homemade cerelac recipe. EE from the PHC gave an introductory

talk. A recipe competition was conducted where the mothers had to prepare a nutritious recipe and

low cost recipe and prizes were given based on taste, cost and nutritive value. Total 11 mothers

participated in the competition. The AYUSH M/O from the PHC and ANM and MPHW (M) from

Saligao subcentre were present. The session was attended by 17 mothers. It was an interactive

session where the audience also asked many questions to which their queries.

nutritious recipes for a recipe competition which were judged by the assistant nutrition officer, IEC

supervisor and LHV based on the following criteria-Taste and presentation, cost and local availability,

nutritive value. Out of 12 recipes, best 3 recipes were chosen as the winners. Total 5 anganwadis were

participated. The participants were also advised on how to improvise the recipes nutritionally after the prize

An IEC activity was conducted at Ambedkars high School, Colvale for the students of 5th

standard. The nutrition officer gave a talk on importance of nutrition for adolescents, balanced

diet, healthy eating habits, importance of water, breakfast and the deficiencies and food sources

of important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and lifestyle diseases. The

Colvale H/O spoke on eye donation awareness and world glaucoma day and Vit A deficiency

and food sources. The IEC supervisor and MPHW (M) from Colvale PHC and ANM from

Camurlim sub centre was present. A total of 150 students and 5 teachers were present. It was an

interactive session.

In the view of “National Nutrition Week 2017”, an IEC activity was conducted on nutrition for the

mothers at Devlaiwada, Khandola. The Extension educator from Betki PHC gave the introduction of the

programme and welcomed the guest. The assistant nutrition officer gave a powerpoint presentation on

importance of nutrition and balance diet for children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers.

Other topics highlighted were exclusive breastfeeding and its benefits for mother and child, weaning foods,

homemade cerelac powder, importance of breastfeeding, water, breakfast, the deficiencies and sources of

nutritious recipes based on leafy vegetables presentation for the recipe competition which were judged by the

Health Officer, assistant nutrition officer, Extension educator, PHN and LHV based on the following

criteria-Taste and presentation, cost and local availability, nutritive value. Out of 18 recipes, best 3 recipes

were chosen as the winners. The participants were also advised on how to improvise the recipes nutritionally

after the prize distribution. It was an interactive session where the audience also asked many questions to

which their queries were answered.

value. Out of 14 recipes, best 3 recipes were chosen as the winners. The participants were also advised on

Visited our lady of Grace High School, Bicholim along with school health team of Bicholim PHC.

Assistant nutrition officer gave a talk on importance of nutrition for adolescents, balanced diet,

healthy eating habits, importance of water, breakfast and the deficiencies and food sources of

important nutrients like iron and calcium, importance of WIFS supplementation, ill effects of junk

food and lifestyle diseases. Also gave diet counselling to 2 students on weight gain diet for

underweight students. A total of 51 students from XB STD were present. The dentist, Ayush doctor

and ANM were present to conduct general school health check up of students. It was an interactive

session.

anganwadi, Guirim for the mothers of children. The nutrition officer delivered a talk on importance

of nutrition and balance diet for children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers. Other topics

highlighted were importance of water, importance of breakfast, healthy eating habits in children and

the deficiencies and sources of important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and

associated lifestyle diseases, preparation of recipes keeping in mind the local availability and SNP

EE from Porvorim PHC. PHN and Ayush M/O from the Porvorim PHC and MPHW (M) from

Guirim sub centre were present. The session was attended by 12 mothers. It was an interactive

session where the audience also asked many questions to which their queries.

An IEC activity was conducted at Narayan Zantye College of Commerce, Vathadev on nutrition,

eye donation fortnight and traffic rules violation for the S.Y. NSS students. In view of educating

them about importance of nutrition since they are in the adolescent phase and this is a very crucial

period for their healthy growth and development and thus require special attention to macro as well

as micro nutrients. The Health Officer spoke on eye donation fortnight and traffic rules violation

topics. The assistant nutrition officer gave a power point presentation on importance of nutrition

for adolescents, balanced diet, calculation of BMI and BMR to maintain proper weight for height,

healthy eating habits, importance of water, breakfast and the deficiencies and food sources of

important nutrients like Iron and calcium, anemia and its causes, symptoms and prevention, ill

effects of junk food and lifestyle diseases. The Extension educator and RMNCH+A were present.

A total of 101 students and 2 lecturers were present. It was an interactive session.

important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and associated lifestyle diseases,

preparation of recipes keeping in mind the local availability and SNP provided to the beneficiaries

and homemade cerelac recipe. A recipe competition was conducted where the mothers had to

prepare a nutritious and low cost recipe and prizes were given based on taste, cost and nutritive

value. Total 15 mothers participated in the competition. The IEC supervisor from Colvale PHC

gave a brief talk on the recipes prepared by the mothers. Mukhya Sevika from the Mapusa sector

spoke on the various ICDS schemeswere present. The MPHW (M) from Tivim subcentre was

present. The session was attended by 35 mothers. It was an interactive session where the audience

also asked many questions to which their queries.

Deulwada were participated. The IEC supervisor and LHV from Sanquelim PHC, Harvalem SC staff,

Sarpanch from Kudnem panchayat, 2 GPS teachers, 1 PTA member and 3 anganwadi workers were present.

The ladies attending the session were instructed to prepare nutritious recipes based on Sprouted moong

preparation for the recipe competition which were judged by the assistant nutrition officer, GPS teachers,

IEC supervisor and LHV based on the following criteria-Taste and presentation, cost and local availability,

nutritive value. Out of 15 recipes, best 6 recipes were chosen as the winners and participation prizes were

given. Participants were also advised on how to improvise the recipes nutritionally after the prize

distribution. It was an interactive session where the audience also asked many questions to which their

queries were answered.

Conducted an IEC Activity during NCD screening camp at Saligao anganwadi. Nutrition officer

gave a group session as well as individual counseling on types and causes of diabetes, diabetes

management, care during hypoglycemia, healthy eating habits, meal patterns, foods to be avoided

and included in the diet by diabetics, water, importance of exercise to control diabetes, salt

restricted diet in hypertensive patients, cancer awareness and breast cancer detection and iron

deficiency symptoms and foods rich in iron and food to include and avoid to increase iron

absorption.. The NCD camp team from Candolim PHC and the Saligao subcentre were present for

the camp.

highlighted were importance of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding and its benefits for mother and child,

weaning foods, homemade cerelac powder, importance of water, breakfast, the deficiencies and sources of

important nutrients like iron and calcium, ill effects of junk food and lifestyle diseases. Tips on how to

improvised and increase the nutritional value of a recipe were also touched upon. The session was attended

by 13 mothers of different age groups. Total 4 anganwadis from Maulinguem area -Mayekarwada,

Harijanwada, Sateriwada and Gaokarwada Van anganwadis were participated. The ANM from

Maulinguem SC and 3 anganwadi workers were present. The ladies attending the session were instructed to

prepare nutritious recipes for the recipe competition which were judged by the assistant nutrition officer

based on the following criteria-Taste and presentation, cost and local availability, nutritive value. Out of 8

recipes, best 3 recipes were chosen as the winners. Participants were also advised on how to improvise the

held a Quiz competition for the students on Nutrition. The students answering the correct answers were

felicitated with small token of appreciation. Followed by The Nutrition Officer delivered a power point

WIFS was done encouraging the students to benefit from the same. Nutritional guidelines to be followed

during the consumption of the Iron & Folic acid supplements through balanced breakfast and avoiding

caffeinated beverages and junk food was discussed. The deworming schedule was also explained. The

to the mother to breastfeed the child and hygiene and warmth, Malnutrition in Children how it affects the

child‟s growth, academic performance and other activities. Adopting correct feeding practices and other
