Increasingly,ITLeadersareunderpressuretofunctionwithintighterbudgetsbecauseoftheoveralleconomicenvironmentthattheworldfindsitselfin:thereareinternalforces(costpressures,decliningmargins,andsmallerheadcounts)aswellasexternalforces(newregulationsandtechnologicaldevelopments)thatdrivethedailyoperationsandthestrategicdirectionoftheITdepartments.Insuchachallengingsituationlikethis,ITLeadershaveatoughtimetonavigatecarefullyinordertodeliverthevaluerequiredbytheirbusinesses.However,theirverysurvivalandsuccessdependsontheirabilitytocommunicatetotheirboardsandstakeholdersthevaluetheycontributetotheirrespectiveorganisations.

TounderstandthenuancesandtheimperativesofITvaluemanagement,CIOAcademyAsia(CIOAA)conductedahalf-dayworkshopon30MarchinSingapore.Datamanagementandcloudsolutionsprovider,NetApp,wasthemainpartnerfortheworkshop.Over30ITleadersparticipatedinthisworkshopwheretheydiscussedandlearntabouthowtheycanhighlightthevalueofITtotheirstakeholdersanddeliverITvaluetothebusiness.

• Talkbusiness,nottechnology– ITLeadersneedtolearnthreeskills:createvalue,findvalueandcommunicatevalue(toyourboardsandstakeholders).

• ITpersedoesnotmatter:youdon’tjusthavetoimplementaprojectbecausethatisparforthecourse;whatmattersishowyouaddvalueontopofthat.

• Valuechangesovertime– “Showvalue(ofyourIT)orsomeoneelsewilleatyourlunch”.

• Payattentiontostrategymanagementininfrastructureprojects

• TopprioritiesforITLeadersrangefromsavingwithoperationalefficienciestodrivingrevenuegrowthandsettingstrategyandgovernance,runningITasabusiness,rationalising applicationsandmanagingbyportfolio.

• Todaystechnologyisshapingindustries,andtopprioritiesforinnovationshouldbeagilityandnimbleness.ITLeadersshouldportrayITasavaluecentre,notacostcentre!

• ITLeadersshouldnotfocusoncostortimelines,itshouldbeconveyedasvaluetotheboardquickly,securelyandinamannerthatthebusinesscanconsume

• ThenewITmodel,thathasbecomethenewtouchstoneinthemarketischaracterised assoftware-defined,withelementssuchascost,control,choice,agility,insightandriskthatITLeadershavetodealwith.

• AlignITwithbusiness,andhaveaservicecatalogue,whichoffersbothperformanceandprotection.

• Devisingaservicecostmodelisimportantasitallowscustomerstopayforwhattheyuse.

• CautionITLeadersagainstthechallengeoftransformation– Don’tunderestimateitasitinvolvesbuy-infromvariousquarters,includingthechallengeofgettingexecutivesponsorship.

• Customerstodaywantservices(evenfrominfrastructureproviders)andwanttobeconsumers.

• Thehalf-dayworkshop,packedwithpowerfulpresentationsfromindustryveterans,endedwiththeconcludingnotethatIThastobeseenasabusinesspartnerforITLeaderstoeffectivelycommunicateitsvaluetothestakeholders.
