IT the press-fit monster
1 Design a friendly 2-headed monster
It might take some time until you feel comfortable with your design. Besides, it’s like a puzzle, so everything has to fit
perfectly!
2 Take a picture, import it to Rhinoceros and re-draw it
3 Extrude it to have an idea of how it will look like
To organize myself, I opted to put each item in a different layer. It’s easier when you want to assemble it in 3D.
4 Put the pieces inside the material dimensions.
Yes, it is in spanish. Anyway, I created 3 different layers. CORTE is for what will be cut (black), GRABADO is for what will be engraved (red), and 0 is to see the material and the laser engraver bed’s dimensions as reference (black).
5 Import the file in Autocad and begin!!!
The left corner on top equals to the one in the laser engraver
Plywood was 2.5 mm width. Everything seemed to be going fine…but not.
Apparently, 2 things influenced on it: the laser power when cutting (should have been higher), and the material that was bended (try to look for a material flat enough). That’s why I took the right side picture, in order to show the parts that were OK.
6 Don’t worry. You simply have to repeat the process for the uncut pieces
This time I increased the cutting power to 100% and decreased speed to 4%. I had to look for new material, too.
Well, I have to admit I crossed my fingers…
And it worked! Obviously, it was because of the changed values…not the fingers.
7 Be happy. Now, you have all the pieces.
8 Assemble your monster. By the way, I named mine ‘IT’.
1 2 3
4 5
Repeat this 5 more times since IT has 6 legs.
6 7 8
9 10
IT has 2 heads, so you have to do it just twice.
11 12 13
14 14
Put the 6 legs on the body, and assemble everything like how it is showed.
9 Finally, play with IT!
