IT JOB MARKET – AN OVERVIEW OF 2018 IT job market in Poland and around the world

The demand for new employees continues to increase on the IT job market, growing in parallel to the dynamic development of innovative technologies. What is more, there are no signs indicating that this trend might change in the nearest future. Every year generates new IT-related jobs, not only for developers, but also for team managers, testers and data analysts.

And which technologies reigned supreme in 2018? The data compiled and analysed by HackerRank indicates that JavaScript and Java developers were the most sought-after IT specialists. The same trend was noticeable on the Polish market, which is evidenced by the data from our site which confirm that these two programming languages were the most commonly asked-for technologies in the job postings published by our clients in 2018.

IT JOB MARKET 2018 SUMMARY OF THE YEAR

According to the data from StackOverflow, as many as 80% of all IT recruiters claim that finding employees with relevant qualifications is the most difficult part of their work.

Java and Javascript are the most popular technologies both on the Polish and global market. This tendency has been holding strong for a few years already and is reinforced by several different factors. Javascript is at the moment the only programming language supported by all browsers, and one which is increasingly often used in mobile apps and back-end solutions. On the other hand, Java is not only a mature language which has been available on the market for more than twenty years, but foremost a stable virtual machine (JVM) which is the most frequently used application platform in business applications.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

IT companies need people for both back-end jobs, and front-end or even full-stack positions. In which areas do companies employ the highest number of employees? According to the data gathered by StackOverflow, back-end specialists are the biggest sub-group within general IT staff, followed by full-stack specialists and front-end developers. The data we have collected on the Polish labour market again echoes the global results. According to our “Remuneration in IT” survey, more than 32% of people working in the IT industry are back-end developers. Full-stack specialists came in second (19%), and front-end developers (11%) took the third place. The above-mentioned data allow to conclude that developers are the most sought-after IT specialists, and that there is no indication that this trend will change any soon.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The growing demand for developers, as well as their high salaries, have motivated more and more young people to plan their futures with the IT industry in mind. This is confirmed, for example, by data from the No Fluff Jobs, according to which there were on average as many as 22 applicants for every job posting for an open junior-level position in 2018. This trend became a source of another contemporary phenomenon – the ever-growing number of varied programming resources, teaching organisations and learning opportunities, such as on-line courses, bootcamps or free e-books. However, most job postings are targeted at experienced developers. According to the StackOverflow’s data, the shortage of experienced developers on the Polish market can amount to as many as 50,000 people.

Both in Poland and worldwide, most developers learn programming through IT or related studies.

There is still a shortage of experienced developers on the market, and companies that are unable to offer significant salary increases must deal with the risk of valued employees leaving them for greener pastures, as such employees often can expect to receive a salary increase of more than 50% in a new company. Salary increase systems do not provide for such high levels of rises. Let’s imagine for a second that an employee left your company. Consequently, a new vacancy appears for which salary range have to be increased as well to avoid getting stuck in a never-ending recruitment process. It is a vicious cycle.

The recent impressive increases are directly linked to the fact that Tricity has undergone significant changes in the last few years. Until recently, Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot struggled with insufficient amount of available office space, a shallow job market and salaries which were significantly lower compared to Krakow or Wroclaw. Nowadays, the situation is completely different, and

Tricity, although it is leading in terms of growth, is just catching up with the other large cities. What is more, recently, there has been a growing sense of awareness of health risks constituting side-effects of living in cities plagued by air pollution. Whole families began to move out to Pomerania for health reasons.

In 2019, an increasing number of companies will be interested in more deliberate creation of a culture of diversity (employing people of different genders, nationalities, ages, languages and approaches to problem solving). The aim is to not only create a team consisting of employees whose competences complement each other, but also to achieve greater business success, as companies which focus on diversity perform better and find it easier to attract the customer base and job candidates.

This means that recruiters need to redesign recruitment processes from scratch – build a new candidate base, ensure a smaller pipeline, deal with a lower response rate, and prepare for considerably longer recruitment processes.

Progress is happening at a faster pace than in any previous decades, and recruiters must be up-to-date with the latest technologies, so as not to lose their competitive advantage. Recruiters might not be able to get by with only knowledge of HR or psychology. They will also need to know how to use relevant tools, apply a more analytical approach and conduct smart assessment of activities, which will translate into better results, provided, however, that the methods used by recruiters will be well-selected with specific needs in mind.

It is worth noting that, as the demand for IT specialists is steadily growing, the demand for IT recruiters who are able to work as their partners in the recruitment process is also increasing. HR departments will have to face a real challenge – they will have to not only ensure that their recruitment teams include people with such expertise, but also hire junior recruiters who can quickly learn the desired skills.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

Over the last years, I have noticed a large increase in the number of companies with foreign capital operating on the Polish market. I think that 2019 will bring even more of them, as employers around the world recognise the quality of services offered by Polish IT specialists. I also expect a strong increase in salaries offered by Polish companies. In order to be able to compete for the best employees with local branches of foreign companies, Polish companies will have to increase the remuneration they offer, broaden the range of offered benefits or attract younger candidates by creating internal development paths.

One of the benefits that I hope will become more commonly offered in Poland is the remote work option. It is the future of the IT industry, especially in the context of expectations of younger generations for whom work in the office and long commutes are simply not desirable. These are the trends that I wish to see implemented – both for myself and everyone else who works or wants to work in the IT industry.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The most important phenomenon is the fact that the position of employees is strengthening with every passing year, while employers are slowly losing in importance. This trend will be even more visible in the coming year – mainly due to globalisation and the fact that virtually no territorial boundaries between countries exist anymore on the global IT market.

The awareness of importance of work-life balance will also increase in 2019. In order to meet the expectations of employees, companies will try to provide an increasingly complex package of non-salary benefits. Private medical care is not enough anymore; new popular options include company crèches and concierge services. In short, everything that will make it easier for a potential employee to function between work and home.

An increasing number of employers is also aware of the fact that implementation of some of their projects can take even several years. That is why the long-term commitment of employees is so important. What will help to ensure such commitment? Most likely long-term incentive schemes and, for example, such options as an opportunity to own the company's shares. Finally, salaries. Although they are no longer the key factor in making employment decisions, they will continue to grow. stale rosły.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The issue of acquiring and retaining the best talents is nowadays one of the biggest challenges for employers, not only in the IT industry. With the huge staff deficit and increasing competitiveness on the market, it is becoming more difficult to hire new people and maintain high motivation levels among the currently employed staff. One of the possible ways of making up for such disadvantages is opting for attracting increasingly younger professionals, which requires creation of apprenticeships, internships or mentoring programmes suited to the needs and abilities of members of such age groups.

Next year, employers will certainly have to deal with relocation of employees from less developed areas of Poland, as well as other countries, especially Ukraine. This will require the companies to create appropriate relocation schemes, not only for potential employees, but also for members of their families.

When considering the challenges of 2019, we cannot forget about the legal obligations imposed on employers. Considering the introduction of GDPR, the amendment of the Personal Data Protection Act and the potential up-coming changes in the Labour Code, companies will have to be prepared to deal with large stacks of documents and adapt to changes required by the legislator.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

In 2019, one of the most important trends will be the growing number of women in the IT industry, which is nowadays still dominated by men. However, it might soon change in a significant way, because, according to the “Women at Technical Universities” report, the academic year of 2017/2018 was marked by the largest increase in the number of female students of IT sciences in history. The increasing popularity of IT schools, creation of women-centric programming communities, as well as the fact that companies themselves intensify their efforts to promote diversity policies, will also lead to evening out the gender disproportions on the IT market.

In 2019, the importance motivation, attitude and flexibility will also increase, with these factors becoming more significant than diplomas and degrees on the labour market. The fact that the IT sector is characterised by continuous development and high level of innovation means that the candidate's approach to work plays an increasingly important role in recruitment. This is confirmed by the fact that, this year, fifteen top companies in the US, including IBM, Google, EY and Apple joined the group of employers for which a university diploma is no longer an obligatory element of the candidate’s CV.

“Educate and Employ” will become even more important slogan in 2019. Some companies have started to train their future employees or retrain members of their current staff. Several well-known brands such as Nokia, Google and Comarch even decided to launch their own programming academies. The popularity of educational programs for employees that help them acquire necessary competences is also increasing. According to the research conducted by McKinsey Global Institute, the progressive automation will result in the need to retrain at least 375 million employees by 2030.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The ever-growing competition in the labour market will be one of the biggest recruitment challenges of 2019. This trend will continue next year, forcing recruiters to look for new, creative methods to recruit candidates from the IT industry.

2019 will pose a challenge for recruiters who will find it increasingly harder to motivate candidates to accept job offers. Employers have to think about their ideas for attracting potential employees, e.g. look for new benefits and perks.

It is also extremely important to optimise the entire recruitment process. Today’s labour market is the employee market, which forces recruitment teams to take quick and well-thought-out actions.

One of the rarely mentioned challenges faced by every recruitment specialist is the need for greater flexibility. Many of those interested in the recruiter’s offer are already working, which often makes agreeing on a convenient recruitment interview date more complicated. Candidates would like to have an opportunity to sit down for an interview in the evening or at the weekend, and many of them prefer to carry out job interviews remotely.

2019 will bring one more challenge for recruiters – the necessity of self-development. The significance of IT specialists’ technical competences will continue to grow, and job candidates will definitely find it easier to find common ground with recruiters that have at least general awareness of relevant products.

The personal branding of the recruiter will also gain in importance. To keep up with the pace of market development, the recruiter will need to have the ability to communicate effectively about the value of the company and be able to instil a sense of mission in the candidate, which can significantly affect the company's competitive advantage.

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The last several months reveal a few clear trends on the IT job market which I expect to become even more dominant in 2019. The first of them is undoubtedly the interest in data science. This is an area which is well-suited for people with good analytical thinking competences and well-developed soft skills, as it requires not only the ability to formulate conclusions on the basis of available data, but also the ability to present them in an efficient way, e.g. to the management.

Other “hot topics” in the world of IT are user experience and user interface. Contemporary users have no time to search for information within websites, applications or systems – they expect them to be clear and easy-to-use. It means that the UX/UI specialists will certainly have no reason to complain about their job prospects in 2019.

The popularity of C# has been growing over the past several years. It is clearly visible not only in the rankings, but also in the number of companies that look for specialists with knowledge of this language at job fairs. In my opinion, C#, which is both strongly supported and developed by Microsoft, has not reached its full potential yet and will continue to climb in the popularity rankings.

SUMMARY

IT JOB MARKET 2018

The 2018 data demonstrate clearly that the IT industry, both in Poland and across the world, is still dynamically developing and undergoing constant changes. What is more, according to our experts, there is no indication that this trend will change any soon. On the contrary, in the next years, both candidates and recruiters active on the IT market will have to constantly improve their skills, learn to use new tools and look for innovative solutions to keep up with the ever-changing market. However, the effort put into development will not go unrewarded. If our forecasts prove to be correct, in the near future, IT sector employees will be able to count on higher remuneration, more varied offer of benefits, as well as more opportunities for remote work or flexible working time.
