Transcript of It consists of substances called pollutants which can be gaseous, liquid or solids that, over time,...
Definition •Air pollution occurs when the
atmosphere contains gases, dust, fumes or odour in harmful amounts.
• It consists of substances called pollutants which can be gaseous, liquid or solids that, over time, interfere with human comfort, health and the environment.
Definition • Not only do humans suffer,
but innocent plant and animal life are at stake.
• Our atmosphere helps protect the Earth. Any additional gas, particles or odors that are introduced into the air, distort this natural balance.
Causes • The causes of air pollution are
mainly caused by the most recent technological advances.
• Which means that the things invented to make life easier, also make the world suffer.
Causes 1. Dust from Fertilizers - Air
pollution is caused from the dust of fertilizers. Farmers use fertilizers to help their crops grow.
2. Even the pesticides used to kill indoor and outdoor pests and the herbicides use to kill weeds all contribute to Air Pollution.
Causes 3. Vehicles that run on a Combustion Engine
are a major cause of Air Pollution. The exhaust from the engines contain carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide. This creates harmful smog.
4. Factories burn Fossil Fuels and pollute the atmosphere. These also contribute to smog, destruction of plants and rusts iron.
Causes 5. Air Pollution is also caused by
Mining Operations. Mainly because:
• The land needs to be cleared, resulting in deforestation.• Bushes and plants are burnt, thus
adding to pollution and taking from nature’s ability to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen in the area.• It also prevents key patterns in
nature, such as pollination of flowers and edible plant life as well as destroying the homes of insects.
PlacesThe world is full of Air Pollution. In some places there are not that bad in contrast to others.
Some places in the world that have excessive amounts of pollution are:
SolutionsWe have seen why Air pollution is present and where Air pollution occurs. So now let us look at how we, at home can stop it.
1. We can begin to use public modes of transportation or carpool. So instead of several vehicles and little passengers each, use less vehicles with more passengers per vehicle.
Solutions2. Another way is to simply conserve
energy. As in turning off lights or fans when not in use. Large amounts of fossil fuels are burnt to produce electricity.
3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This means that not everything is entirely useless. You can reuse old bottles and jars to store items, or you can get really creative and make something nice with a simple plastic bottle.
Solutions4. Use fans instead of air conditioning. The
cooling agent in air conditioning also affects the environment as it depletes the ozone layer. It is not a big threat at the moment, but with the increasing demand in hot countries, it may be serious in the future.
5. You can also use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs. In contrast to your average light bulb, the CFL consumes less energy, lower electricity bills and lasts longer.
The EndThanks for listening and we hope you’ve enjoyed our presentation.
And help stop air pollution today!
