Modem Pool Update

• Beginning 3-year process to phase out modem pool access

• Current modem pool will be upgraded and in place 6/04 – 6/07

• New solutions provides:– More management / maintenance

features– Reduces operating costs

Initial Details

• There will be a new dial in number• Reduction to 300 modems may

increase busy signals and decrease access

• Call time-out after 1 hour• IP only• Other dial-in solutions will not be

granted access to the network

• provides digital document management using scanning, storage, retrieval systems

• improves efficiency and decreases the volume of paper that is processed and stored. 

• available at Emory University since 1995

• Optix is DI solution

• Software Standards– Desktop applications and/or clients

necessary to communicate with enterprise applications

– Identify one standard for each platform (PC/Apple) and no more than 2 alternatives

DeskNet Methodology• DeskNet Working Group reviews, modifies

and defines during a scheduled meeting• Hardware recommendations and Software

standards are reviewed every academic year• Spring is used as trigger to update the

standards• All standards are posted on it.emory.edu• Any significant changes to a standard will

have a detailed migration and communications plan– Example: McAfee to Symantec
