The foundation for the “IT as a Services Broker” model is a hybrid IT environment that expands the traditional, on-premises environment with components including software-as-a- service, private cloud and public cloud (in both Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure- as-a-Service models). Business users select their services through a service catalog and where those services reside is invisible— and irrelevant—to them. Learn more at http://www.avanade.com/NoITBoundaries

It doesn’t have to be this way. There is an alternative, even—especially—given the state of cloud-based technology with its options, including both private and public. Enterprise IT can build standardized offerings and services that enable innovation across the enterprise—offerings and services that can be better tracked, managed and curated. And enterprise IT can give the business easy, self-service access to these services, along with full operational and financial visibility into them. The result will be greater business empowerment.

For enterprise IT, this alternative provides a way to maintain oversight and governance across all services, regardless of how they’re delivered. It provides a way for IT to break out of fire-fighting mode and focus instead on the business’ most pressing strategic issues. And it means improved relationships that bring the business and IT together to make the enterprise more nimble in its response to fast-changing markets.

Introducing IT as a Services Broker.Enterprise IT can make this alternate vision a reality through an Avanade-inspired model of IT as a Services Broker or enabler. In this model, enterprise IT and business units partner, with clearly defined roles, on differentiated services that grow the business.

As a broker or enabler, enterprise IT can:

• Curate a service catalog from which business units access their resources.

• Enforce consistent practices for architecture, security, disaster recovery, performance, and more.

• Deliver expertise that business units need, such as on vendor and sourcing management.

Enterprise IT is always under pressure to do more with less. What’s different now is that business units aren’t waiting. They’re under pressure too, and they’re using software-as-a-service and the cloud to create or subscribe to their own solutions—solutions that may circumvent IT entirely.

The growth of business unit-level technology budgets is making this possible. It’s also leading to shadow IT operations that can result in disjointed and unmanageable environments, to inconsistent solutions that can’t interoperate across the enterprise, and to a lack of visibility into the quality of infrastructure and performance across services.

You can do it. (Avanade can help). The foundation for the “IT as a Services Broker” model is a hybrid IT environment that expands the traditional, on-premises environment with components including software-as-a-service, private cloud and public cloud (in both Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service models). Business users select their services through a service catalog and where those services reside is invisible—and irrelevant—to them. This multiplatform environment gives the enterprise a level of IT flexibility and agility not possible in an on-premises-only environment.

Avanade has identified the key capabilities needed for the “IT as a Services Broker” model. As a first step in helping enterprises to adopt the model, we work with you to assess current capabilities and identify gaps. Core capabilities include the following:

Discovery and workload migration.Which workloads go where in this model? To make “IT as a Services Broker” work, enterprise IT needs to scan its systems, take stock of service sprawl, and identify redundancies and relationships, core and commodity workloads, and candidates for migration. It’s crucial to quickly identify non-core workloads—e.g., those excluding ERP, payroll, HR, etc.—and decide which, if any, to move to the public cloud. Enterprise IT also needs the capability to migrate some cloud workloads back on premises as requirements change.

Requisition and management.Enterprise IT needs an entirely new level of management and support capabilities to succeed with the new, more complex hybrid environment. Those capabilities need to include tracking resource consumption, workflow management, cost and run-rate, plus monitoring and managing platforms, and integrated identity and role-based systems access. Enterprise IT also needs to be able to create and maintain the service catalog through which business users access their resources.

Policy and compliance.Another core requirement is the ability to ensure that IT policies and business governance are applied to user actions and IT requests. A policy engine to accomplish this will keep systems from being placed in inappropriate locations—such as highly confidential data in a public cloud. It will also consider a workload’s size, scale, and usage patterns to ensure that workloads are assigned to the most cost-appropriate platforms. Whatever the business’s needs and requirements, there should be appropriate policy enforcement across IT operations.

Hybrid environments.Enterprise IT must support the needs of the agile business with on-demand access to cloud-based services across a hybrid infrastructure. These could range from IaaS and PaaS services to create, test and run applications, to SaaS services for functions such as collaboration.

Self-service.How can you give employees the right level of access to the services that are right for them? With Avanade’s Cloud Services Manager. This web-based, self-service portal provides an integrated and easy way to research, request, manage, and retire IT services and computing assets in your custom catalog. That catalog, created to your requirements, is your employees’ point of access to authorized workloads that can be sourced from any platform in the environment.

Private/hybrid cloud.Only Avanade delivers the world’s most in-depth expertise in Microsoft technologies—apart from Microsoft itself—together with the breadth of expertise to incorporate both Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies into the optimal environment for your enterprise. Your environment benefits from the ideal use of Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V, Windows Azure, Office 365 and more, together with Linux, Oracle, Amazon and others as appropriate for your specific requirements.

Cloud application development and modernization.Whether you’re building new applications for the cloud or migrating on-premises applications to it, you need the design and development expertise that we’ve taken years to acquire. Could you, for example, benefit most from a hybrid application that runs its complex BI on-premises and its commodity elements in the public cloud? Avanade’s been there, done that.
