Martin says: 'Fancy a ride?' I'm slightly sceptical if my fitness is up to it

but his broad grin is very persuasive. After 5 minutes, I too have a grin,

one that stays with me until the end of our bike tour, even on steep hills

with long climbs. Deep in the woods, Martin shows me the spot where

in 1974 his career as a bicycle developer began. Martin reminisces 'We

were 10 years old and organised a bike race. I built my first bike and

won.' 'How many races did you take part in since?' I ask. Martin 'None'.

What's impressive about Martin Kuhlmeier is that he is not easily

impressed. He does his thing and that is i:SY. A quiet Mr. Cool. Reduced

to the essentials but with a compelling intensity.

The stereotypical question of being 'Deserted on an island along

with three favourite things' is quickly answered 'My iPad full of sound

and my espresso machine. I don't need a third thing.' He doesn't even

contemplate an i:SY on the island. 'Can i:SY swim?' I ask. Martin laughs

'Interesting question. i:SY is a lifeguard. For example, on gravel it may

not be able to save your life, but it will probably save your day. i:SY is

pure joy. Try it. I guarantee you'll love it!'

Speaking of inventions 'What would Martin Kuhlmeier invent if

there were no more bikes to invent?' Martin spontaneously states

'The compact i:SY House'.

About stairs, tables and bikes. To understand the philosophy of i:SY,

I drive to i:SY's HQ in Hullhorst. Martin Kuhlmeier's philosophy is 'Only

The Best' and he has designed his HQ in keeping with i:SY bikes. The

building expresses the visual language of the inventor. As a visitor you

understand this immediately.

i:SYOLOGIE - to feel the real heart beat of i:SY one walks from the

showroom up a steel ladder to the top floor. Martin Kuhlmeier

believes 'The stairs express what we do perfectly – highly functional,

convenient, totally wicked design.'

On the first floor of the i:SY laboratory two tables dominate the

room. Table One is long and narrow, with eight stools made of i:SY

orange steel. 'Here we think; blue sky thinking, thinking laterally,

develop, team meetings and sometimes trouble-shooting. Everything

happens at this table.' Table Two has a rough wooden top. Inscribed

in which is 'Life is Beautiful'. An i:SY statement. 'Here we eat and

drink. Discuss but also celebrate. After a long intense day it's a place

for some well deserved down time; this is what this table is for. Sure,

you could also take a ride on the i:SY.' Martin laughs. Here, you can

definitely feel the heart beat of i:SY.

The i:SY Center fits the product – the architecture, the tables, the

stairs. And oh yes, indestructible. The question: 'Who's designed it?'

Needless to ask. Martin Kuhlmeier smiles.

Each city has its own smell, in Zurich it's the smell of coffee and

chocolate – a tempting scent even i:SY can't resist. Our i:SY bike follows

The i:SY weekend tour starts at the Cassiopeiasteg. The wide broadwalk

was opened in 2015 and has a total length of nearly 300 meters.

100 meters straight out into Lake Zurich, it connects the 'Rote Fabrik'

with the port of Wollishofen. The 'Rote Fabrik', was built in 1892 as a

silk factory, today it is a great cultural centre. The listed brick venue

hosts more than 300 events annually. Here you also find 'Dock 18',

a space for media and cultures from around the world. The spectacular

view of the alps with their snowy peaks are an enchanting experience

found on very few bike tours so close to a major city. Sports and

leisure is the programme around Lake Zurich. Swimming, a boat ride, but

also secret places on the island Lutzelau, the tour offers real variety.

On their return, our five friends enjoy a cool drink at a reggae concert

at the 'Rote Fabrik', that is when living is i:SY. Stimulating instead

of exhausting. To exercise, in a pleasant way. 'Das ist einfach lässig,'

they say in Zurich. We just call it i:SY.

The spectacular Viadukt architecture replaced the railway embankment

in the late 18th Century, wining several architectural prizes in 2011.

Today, the Zurich Viadukt is a markethall and meeting place for the

neighbourhood with stylish second-hand shops fit for fashionistas in

search of super hip outfits. Surprises can be expected throughout the

Viadukt. i:SY fits in perfectly.

Ride with the i:SY Cargo directly to the Viadukt market and you are in a

paradise of culinary delights. A vast variety of locally baked bread and

cheeses find their way into our picnic basket along with international

specialties such as tapas from Tokyo. With the shopping easily stowed

away on the i:SY Cargo and off we set to Josefwiese, a green oasis in

the middle of the city. The i:SY Cargo is top dog here in a double sense.

Sensitive. And he is, as he confesses, totally in love with i:SY.

i :SY LOVERINSIDER ANDREJ WESTERMANN TALKS ABOUT THE PERFECT BIKE

We interview the smart mechanic in Zurich. Andrej explains how his

i:SY passion came about. 'I was a manager in a business specialising in

electric bikes. One day I encountered i:SY at a trade show. After a brief

test ride, I knew I needed to become an i:SY test driver'.

When Andrej speaks about the 'Best Bike Ever' his eyes sparkle

with enthusiasm. 'The i:SY bike fullfills all my dreams and is perfect for

my needs.

Gradually, I have got rid of all my other bikes.' Andrej Westermann

knows what he is talking about 'Small wheels. Large wheelbase.

Traditional contact points (handlebar, saddle, pedals). Optimised weight

distribution. So you are practically sitting on a big cycle; this is how it

feels but it is small and compact. That's just incredible.' For Andrej i:SY

is unique and the bike of the future.

He specifies the differences between the models. 'The i:SY bikes are

optimized to meet the needs of different types, without unnecessary

frills. The focus is therefore always on the bike itself and you can

immediately feel the difference. The cool design comes free. Fantastic.'
