ISTRUCTE EXAMINATION PREPARATION COURSE

INTRODUCTION The designation “Chartered Structural Engineer” is awarded by the Institution of Structural Engineers, UK. The Institution of Structural Engineers is recognised internationally for the high technical standard and professional competence of its members. The Institution’s vision is “Working together to promote world-‐class standards of safety, efficiency and excellence in structural engineering.” Members have access by Internet to the Institution’s library and receive the Institution’s monthly Journal “The Structural Engineer”. Uniquely, the Institution is an international qualifying body for structural engineers, which requires members to demonstrate their competence through the Chartered Membership Examination (CME). This examination is held in January and July each year. Members of the Institution of Structural Engineers:
1 have demonstrated their competence through success in the CME, and the standard of entry is maintained in this way.
2 are recognized as professionals who have attained an objective standard through this examination. 3 have an internationally accepted qualification (UK, Europe, HK, Singapore ...) 4 gain great confidence and pride in passing this standard. 5 are distinguished from generalist professional engineers.
The course has been held every year since 2008. The attendees have been mainly from consulting firms of varying size as follows:
AECOM | ARRB | Arup | Aurecon | Bonacci Group | Brock Consulting | Brown & Tomkinson | Burns Hamilton | Cardno
| Constructioneering | GHD | Greg Schofield & Associates | Hawthorn Consulting Engineers | Hyder Consulting |
Inhabit Group | Irwinconsult | KBR | Kersulting | MacLeod Consulting | Mott Macdonald Aust | O’Neill Group | Parsons
Brinckerhoff | Pitt & Sherry | PNS World | SMEC | Structural Systems | Structural Works | T D & C| TGM Group | Uhde
Shedden | Webber Design | Winward Structures
STATISTICS The Chartered Membership Examination has a typical pass rate of ~ 36% globally. However, it is well recognised that preparation courses such as this one provides an opportunity for competent structural engineers to improve on that statistic. Our course has nearly doubled this statistic for those taking the exam.

AIMS OF THE COURSE
The CME is a challenging test of competence taken by candidates worldwide every year. The CME tests candidates’ ability to develop practical engineering solutions to a variety of structural problems. Apart from assisting candidates to prepare effectively for the examination, this course aims to provide engineers with an overview of how to approach real-‐life-‐engineering design, from structural scheming, through to analysis. Our aim is to make the integrated design overviews in this course useful to daily engineering practice. The feedback from the past course attendees is the testament to our striving for those aims: “Overall I thought the standard of the course was very high and even useful for people not sitting the exam. …” NO – Bonnaci Group “… Having access to course tutors who have completed the exam themselves and are experienced practitioners in their respective fields, not only provided me with a better understanding of the requirements of the exam itself; but also gave me an opportunity to consolidate and extend my knowledge across various fields of engineering design and construction. … “ AdL – Winward Structures “The course was a great way of gauging 'where I'm at' and also an insight into other structural disciplines that I wouldn't pass in my normal day in, day out work. Furthermore, good network opportunities as well.” RS – KBR “… The people who presented generously shared their experiences, ideas and their understandings. In short, the IStructE course was inspiring. … I observed an enthusiasm and inclusive culture not often shared, at least formally, within our profession. This experience reinforced my attraction for structural engineering and my desire to be a better engineer. That is, I want to be part of this group, to contribute to this group, and that the admission test confirms my commitment to that group. …” GS – Greg Schofield & Associates "I found the CME Preparation Course important not only to my preparation for the exam, but also for my professional development as a structural engineer. Although I have attended many technical presentations since graduation, the direct feedback and knowledge sharing between the CME tutors and candidates is perhaps the most helpful external professional development I have had since university. To all future candidates -‐ enjoy the challenge! " CG – Inhabit Group “CME is a test of presenting technical engineering solution and is highly recommended to all practicing engineer as a measure of technical competency, which EA currently neglects. CME course prepared by VIC Chapter of IStructE is designed to facilitate the test which is highly interactive among professional peers within industry.” PSK – Webber Design
