SAW was built because stanbul Atatrk International Airport had not enough capacity to meet the fast growing bpassenger demands. Currently SAWs terminal capacity is 25 million passengers per year and this capacity will be bigger for the upcoming years. In 2012, 45,190,52 passengers used MadridBarajas, making it the country's largest and busiest airport.The airport is located within the city limits of Madrid and is just 9 km from the city's financial district and 13 km northeast of the Puerta del Sol, Madrid's historic centre. The airport name derives from the adjacent district of Barajas, which has its own metro station on the same rail line serving the airport.
