INTRODUCTION

The joint ISWA and University of Malaya (UM)

Summer School will focus on the issues and

challenges of landfill in developing countries The

course is designed and led by Senior Professor

Agamuthu Pariatamby Head of the Centre of

Research in Waste Management at the Faculty of

Science in the University of Malaya (UM) Professor

Agamuthu is the founder and President of the

Malaysian Society of Waste Management and

Environment as well as the Chief Editor of the SAGE

publication Waste Management amp Research - ISWAs

official scientific journal

The two week training course includes a mix of

classroom excursions and project work covering

optimal landfill siting design and construction

Improved landfill operation landfill leachate and gas

management techniques will be presented using case

studies from successful landfills in developing

countries Further topics will include alternatives to

landfilling that reduce global warming impacts the

environmental health and safety issues of landfilling as

well as the economics of waste management
