Magazine & More: During all these years living and working in Macau you experience many transformations in the territory, what are the moments that marked you the most?Dr. Manuela Antonio: Since I first came to Macau, back in 1982, there were many moments that were very important to me but I would highlight a few, first, the signing of the Sino-

Portuguese Joint Declaration in April 1987 that initiated the process of the transfer of sovereignty. This was the first big step

for Macau guarantee of a high level of autonomy and the reten-tion of its legal system by the Macau Basic Law.The second was the opening of the Macau International Airport, in November 1995, a huge step forward into Macau interna-tionalization.The third moment was necessarily the transfer of sovereignty and the consequent lowering of the Portuguese flag from the

public building that I got used to see since I arrived.The forth moment was the death of the political leader of P.R. China Deng Xiaoping, father of the idea of the return of Macau and Hong Kong territories based on political principle he formu-lated, the so called one country, two systems, that was and still is the basis that allow Macau to exist and to thrive.As for the last, I would say definitely the end of the 40 years

monopoly over Macau gaming industry, which allowed Macau to grow for the last 14 years. Together with the feeling of

friendly policies from P.R. China this was the premonition of what Macau is today.

M&M: Your first office was founded back 1986, during your career in Macau, do you think you job also suffered this

changes?MA: My first office was inaugurated on the 28th of November of 1986 because Im a huge fan of the number 28, in fact I can tell you that this new office was inaugurated on the 28th of

March of this year, what means 28 years after the first one. And

that is correct, the changes on the Territory influenced a lot on

my work too, to start, at the level of the administration of jus-

tice, the courts become slower on their decisions as well as the decisions itself started to be more unpredictable, consequently I retreated myself more from the Courts and Court Cases.
