R.E.A.C.H. started itsrecycling project in 2002.When it was firstimplemented, it was solely amember and volunteer project. However, in the past year, aconcerted effort was also madeto include the community inthis noble task.

The first stage involvedinteractive talks in schools, hotels and local residentialapartments. Schools involvedthus far are SRJK(C ) TanahRata, SRJK(T ) Tanah Rata,SRJK (T ) Blue Valley andSRJK ( C ) Brinchang. Hotelsparticipating in the projectinclude The Heritage,Strawberry Park Hotel,Kowloon Hotel, ParklandHotel and The Star RegencyHotel.

The apartments involved wereDesa Anthurium, Park Viewand Oly. The only bank thathas invited R.E.A.C.H. to talk about recycling and has carriedout active recycling isMaybank.

The restaurants taking part areKowloon Restaurant, T- Cafand DChennai Curry House inTanah Rata. There are also afew bungalows like the SungaiRuil Shell bungalows, theNippon Paint Bungalow andthe OMF Bungalow that arealso actively participating in

recycling. Many volunteersfrom all over the district arealso involved, for without theirco-operation the project wouldnot have been a success.

Our project can be consideredfairly successful, as we havehad two other community-based organizations namelythe Community Eco-TourismAssociation (CETA) fromKuala Gula, and the FrasersHill EnvironmentallySustainable Heritage (FRESH)visiting us to see and learnhow our project is beingimplemented. We were alsoinvited to Kula Gula to give atalk on community recycling.

To date, we havetransported about twenty tonsof recyclables to the recyclingplants in Ipoh and Penang. Ourproject has progressed to theextent where the recyclablesare stored at participating sites

and the vendors collect themand pay the participantsdirectly. With this monetaryincentive we hope moreestablishments will beinvolved in recycling.

Our next step is toinclude the new villages in thedistrict. With the co-operationof the local authority this willdefinitely be possible andsuccessful.

    Clothes, shoes and toys.

Besides recycling, we have alsoset up a centre where clothes, shoes and toys are collected anddonated through NGOs workingwith the Orang Asli . To this dateabout a ton has been collected.
