FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESKDear Southenders,

As the journey continues, I am delighted by the response & support that I am receiving from all of you.

I had outlined various objectives at the beginning of the year & I can now see them unfolding successfully as the year goes by.

The attendance & the contributions to the social services, projects are especially heartening and worth a mention.

Not only, have community services projects so far being well attended but members have also come forward and contributed generously for the projects; in addition to the budget given by the club.

This kind of response really encourages me to do even more.

I once again thank you for all your love and support.

Rtn. Atul Raheja President 2016-17

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW Why were wives of male members affectionately called "Rotary Anns"?

This designation was never one of disparagement, but rather grew out of an interesting historical occasion. The year was 1914 when San Francisco Rotarians boarded a special train to attend the Rotary Convention being held in Houston. In those days few wives attended Rotary events, and until the train stopped in Los Angeles, the only woman aboard was the wife of Rotarian Brunnier.

As the train picked up additional convention-bound delegates, Mrs. Ann Brunnier was introduced as the Rotarian's Ann. This title soon became "Rotary Ann". Since the clubs of the west were inviting the Rotarians to hold their next convention in San Francisco, a number of songs and stunts were organized which would be performed in Houston. One of the Rotarians wrote a "Rotary Ann" chant. On the train's arrival at the Houston depot, a delegation greeted the West Coast Rotarians. One of the greeters was Guy Gundaker of Philadelphia, whose wife was also named Ann.

During the rousing demonstration, someone started the Rotary Ann chant. The two petite ladies, Ann Brunnier and Ann Gundaker, were hoisted to the men's shoulders and parade about the hall. The group loved the title given to the two women named Ann. Immediately the same term of endearment was used for all of the wives in attendance and the name "Rotary Ann" was here to stay.

Nine years later, in 1923, Guy Gundaker became president of Rotary International. Bru Brunnier was elected president in 1952, 29 years after that. Thus, each of the two original Rotary Anns became the "first lady of Rotary International."

Oklahoma City, Club 29 is responsible for the origin of the Rotary Ann auxiliary organization. OKC Rotarian Virgil Browne's wife, Maimee Lee, proposed this organization to Club 29 in November, 1928, and its acceptance has spread to thousands of clubs throughout the Rotary world.

One of the purposes of a Rotary Ann Club is to bring into fellowship the families of the members of the Rotary club. Other objectives include assisting Rotarians in the execution of various club and community projects and uphold the purposes and aims of Rotary.

EVENTS GONE BY Community Project - NGO Sapna A really meaningful and heart warming Community Service Project with more than 25 Southenders participating was held on 3rd September at AIIMS Trauma Center.

In association with NGO Sapna, Medicines and Medical Equipment like Urobags, Wheel Chairs, Suction Machines, Airbeds etc. worth Rs 1.3 lakhs were donated for the poor, underprivileged outstation patients undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Sapna is run by ex-army people and seeing their dedication and service touched the hearts of Southenders present who came forward to donate generously in their individual capacity sponsoring meals and medicines for the patients and their attendees. It was an over whelming experience to see the motivation and immediate action which is the true spirit of Rotary .

The afternoon ended with a Chaat and Chhole Bhature lunch at Evergreen Sweets.

We are grateful to Chairlady Rt’anne Ritu Kumar for her great efforts for choosing and executing this wonderful project.

JOINT SPEAKER MEETINGThe first Joint Speaker Meeting between our club, Rotary South Central and Southend Next took place at Hotel Sheraton Saket on 16th September. We were blessed to have Sister Shivani of Brahmkumaris, sharing her spiritual knowledge and positive thoughts with us.

There was pin drop silence as she addressed the 250+ gathering, speaking on the relation between' Sankara, Karma and Bhagya‘. Her calm and simple explanations involving our current everyday lifestyles using Mobile phones, Facebook, WhatsApp left the audience spellbound. Each one of us was set thinking and highly inspired by her words. Her beautiful explanations of Good Deeds as White balls and negative actions as Black balls will help us to introspect and think twice on our every thought and action. And this is exactly what the principles of Rotary say.

It was indeed an uplifting and enlightening evening with a lot of takeaways for all of us. The event started with High Tea, an hour of fellowship which was a great bonding of all 3 clubs. A remarkable effort by Chairman Rtn Himanshu Kohli who deserves a pat on his back for a very well organised and smooth event in spite of such a large gathering.

6 WHITE BALLS to him.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

We would like to take this opportunity to applaud our very own Rtn. Rummy Chhabra for his selfless efforts in the field of health, education and empowerment of children with diabetes.

He has been actively involved with the Yog Dhyan Foundation (YDF) for the past few years. YDF’s primary mandate is to combat the ill effects of Type 1 diabetes among juveniles by providing free health services. The organization places special emphasis on children belonging to the poverty ridden strata of society. In addition, YDF’s teams initiate discussions with family members and provide services such as stress management and diabetes education.

Rtn. Chhabra’s dedication is commendable and his efforts in this direction continue to be an inspiration for all of us!

This is a new column we are adding to let you know our star performing children.

In 1892 at Stanford University, an 18-year-old student was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, he came up with a bright idea. He and a friend decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education.

They reached out to the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski. His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck and the boys began to work to make the concert a success.

The big day arrived. But unfortunately, they had not managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and explained their plight. They gave him the entire $1600, plus a cheque for the balance $400. They promised to honour the cheque at the soonest possible.

“No,” said Paderewski. “This is not acceptable.” He tore up the cheque, returned the $1600 and told the two boys: “Here’s the $1600. Please deduct whatever expenses you have incurred. Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left”. The boys were surprised, and thanked him profusely.

It was a small act of kindness. But it clearly marked out Paderewski as a great human being.

Why should he help two people he did not even know? We all come across situations like these in our lives. And most of us only think “If I help them, what would happen to me?” The truly great people think, “If I don’t help them, what will happen to them?” They don’t do it expecting something in return. They do it because they feel it’s the right thing to do.

Paderewski later went on to become the Prime Minister of Poland. He was a great leader, but unfortunately when the World War began, Poland was ravaged. There were more than 1.5 million people starving in his country, and no money to feed them. Paderewski did not know where to turn for help. He reached out to the US Food and Relief Administration for help.

He heard there was a man called Herbert Hoover — who later went on to become the US President. Hoover agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food grains to feed the starving Polish people.

A calamity was averted.Paderewski was relieved.

He decided to go across to meet Hoover and personally thank him. When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his noble gesture Hoover quickly interjected and said, " You shouldn’t be thanking me Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college. I was one of them.”

The world is a wonderful place. What goes around comes around. Please help others to the best of your ability. In the long run you may be helping yourself. God never forgets anyone who sows a good seed in other people, never.
