Construction is underway on this Design and Build, 6-form entry, secondary school for 900 pupils in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. It will replace the existing, over-subscribed, 4-form entry comprehensive school catering for 600 pupils. Situated over three floors with a combined area of 7,900m2, the new building will provide teaching areas, a dining area with onsite catering, ICT suites and a sports hall with playing fields.

Kershaw Mechanical Services is installing full M&E building services on the project which presents a number of logistic challenges due the site’s location, being tightly bound by a main railway line to the north, Blackhorse Road, A1006 to the east and residential buildings to the south. The main pedestrian entrance to the school will be at level 1 and accessed via a bridge from Blackhorse Road. The mechanical works include an intelligent Building Management System, CHP boiler, full ventilation, ground floor plant room and roof top plant. The electrical works include access control, fire alarms, a voice alarm and public address system, and all lighting. The school with also benefit from a solar PV roof array of 576m2.

The main contractor is Bouygues UK. The school is due to open in September 2015.

This innovative project to convert the Grade II listed 19th century Moravian Chapel, formerly known as St Luke’s Church, into a state-of-the-art theatre for Bedford School, will see T R Freeman showcasing its skills in traditional hard metal roofing. The new performing arts centre is to be used for school productions and professional touring productions as well as by local amateur and community groups. It will include a foyer, front of house facilities, a 300-seat, galleried courtyard theatre, high level suspensions for scenery and stage lighting, offices, a rehearsal and teaching studio, and back stage facilities. T R Freeman, working for SDC Special Projects, has been appointed to undertake the design development drawings for the zinc roofing areas andthe subsequent installation. They will apply RHEINZINK pre-weathered graphite grey to the radial, tapered roof over the foyer, together with soffit detail, and to two high level turrets situated on a slated roof. Single ply membrane is also being installed to some flat roof areas. Bedford School is for boys aged 7-18 years, and previous pupils who have gone on to performing careers include actor Simon Chandler, comedian Al Murray and Joel Beckett of East Enders and The Office fame.

Trumpington CommunityCollege C A M B R I D G EKershaw Mechanical Services has won the contract to install full M&E building services into what will be the first new build secondary school in Cambridge for more than 50 years. Located on the Clay Farm development, just four miles south of Cambridge city centre, the college will have a footprint of 8,000m² and cater for 750 pupils.

The building’s interiors will provide flexible classrooms around a central atrium, together with a community sports centre including a main hall and fitness suite, and playing fields which will be open to the public. The design also reflects the college’s commitment to sustainability, and will enable students to see sustainability at work in the fabric of the building as well as taking related knowledge from the classroom out into the real world.

Working for main contractor Morgan Sindall, the M&E elements to be installed by Kershaw include a Breathing Building natural ventilation system, a ground source heat pump providing heating and cooling, a gas-fired plant room, full sprinkler system, all power including intelligent lighting, access control and CCTV. The project is targeted to achieve a BREEAM rating of excellent.

Cambridge Station Area RedevelopmentAn extensive programme of regeneration is currently underway which will see Cambridge Railway Station and the area around it transformed into a new, state-of-the art transport interchange supported by vibrant mixed-use development.

As part of the station’s Northern Quarter Enabling Works, Kershaw Contracting Services’ Asbestos Division was appointed by Wates Construction to undertake demolition surveys of several buildings in the vicinity of the station’s car park: the Cityroomz Cambridge hotel consisting of a basement and two storeys; the Aid & Abet, artist-led contemporary arts space; Station Cycles retail outlet, and

the offices and four storerooms of the train operating company, Abellio Greater Anglia. A visual inspection of the British Transport Police’s office was also undertaken. With footprints ranging from 500-1,000sq metres,

the premises had to be surveyed for the presence of asbestos, and reported on with recommendations, within the space of a week.

Kershaw’s experience, coupled with the tablet based data collection system they use which delivers a much quicker turnaround time than the traditional surveying process, meant the client’s tight timetable was successfully adhered to.

The Bluebells K E N TKershaw Contracting Services’ New Build Insulation Division has been appointed by award winning Kent house builder, Pentland Homes to undertake insulation works to properties on its new Bluebells

development in Ashford, Kent. Buyers have a choice of 14 different house styles, with 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms, all of which are stunning in appearance and designed to complement the nearby Ashford Warren wildlife nature reserve and the ancient Hoad’s Wood.

Using a highly specified product range, in keeping with the development, the Kershaw team will install loft and warm roof insulation to 49 houses. They will also install loft insulation to a four storey block of 67, 2-bedroom apartments and communal areas which provides an extra care facility. This is the second time that Kershaw has worked with Pentland Homes.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) was welcomed by Haringey Council as it provides a source of funding to install cavity wall insulation into multiple, Homes for Haringey tower blocks. However,

subsequent changes to ECO funding left the Council with the dilemma of outstanding tower blocks still to insulate and a rapidly narrowing funding window.

Fortunately, Kershaw Contracting Services’ Insulation Refurbishment Division was able to step in and provide a timely and proficient solution, free of charge. Working closely with Haringey Council, they very quickly identified which blocks which were suitable for insulation and agreed a project plan which ensured the remaining blocks were insulated well in advance of the April 2014 changes.

Traditionally, the access for high-rise cavity wall insulation installation is provided by expensive scaffolding access systems. In this case, the cavity wall insulation installation process was carried out by abseiling teams of Rope Access Technicians who took just six weeks to complete the works to 13 high-rise tower blocks.

Tenants of the 499 flats are now benefitting from homes which are warmer, more comfortable and less expensive to heat. John Mathers, Haringey Council said:“I was extremely impressed by the helpful attitude of Kershaw throughout the project. Every morning they arrived promptly and carried out their work with the utmost professionalism. I would have no hesitation in working with them in the future.”
