IROA Pune Chapter Meet

Most of us have heard good words about monthly meeting of NOIDA CHAPTER.

Three retirees who attended monthly meeting cum AGM of the NOIDA CHAPTER on 16th March, 2019 for the first time unanimously resolved after the meeting that though they have registered themselves with the off ice bearers for future communications about date of meeting they will also exchange c o m m u n i c a t i o n a m o n g themselves to ensure that they do not miss the opportunity for any reason.

This speaks volumes about how much the members enjoy.

The get-together carries ambience of a family party in army style perhaps because the organising committee has two ex-army officers which ensures discipline in all areas. Everything moves with army precision making best use of time and increasing the already existing strong bonding in the group.

Sh UK Dikshit presided the function. Major B. P. Mathur presented the annual report of the chapter highlighting that the chapter was founded by Shri DIKSHIT in the year 2005 and has successfully completed 14 years. Best singer in gents and ladies were given prizes. Songs of Holi were sung by ladies to give it a festive essence. Indianoil Retired Officers WelfarePrinted

In January, 2019 Issue I had touched upon felicitation award for female spouses of diseased officers and staff.Today our government is running schemes for women empowerment. Indian society has traditionally denied women their due whereas women have run households better than professional managers without any diplomas and degrees in this field.IOC management must not delay recognition of female spouses of diseased officers and workmen for the phenomenal growth of the organisation. It will not be out of place to mention rule of IROWA about life membership of retirees which makes the spouse IROWA MEMBER automatically upon the death of member. The felicitation scheme has brought joy and hope for many but has hurt the sentiment of this vulnerable section of IOC FAMILY, IOC Management could take a leaf out of IROWA rules. The scheme of felicitation is a modification of the scheme of felicitation of retirees attaining the age of 75 years by honouring them in functions organized at various establishments of IOC. The organisation used to gracefully honour those who were settled at locations from where they could not come and attend the felicitation ceremony. Senior officers were sent to their homes with shawl and silver – a great gesture by IOC Management.I have years of experience in HR and a number of IROWA members have worked at senior and senior most positions in HR in IOC. None of us has come across benefit of amended scheme having been denied to certain categories of retirees who were receiving the benefit before amendment. We have tried to find out the logic and reason of keeping retirees of merged companies out of the ambit of the amended scheme. It is the advancing technology which has brought in this anomaly. The proverbial copy and paste is excellent facility for safeguarding against errors of typing. When excellent features of technology misfire, they are disastrous. The copy and paste of gold coin scheme, which was a new scheme, got appended to the amendment of the existing scheme in the last para and brought the distortion which has hurt many retirees at all levels in their silver years.Good were the days of manual working when we used to read every word before signing policy papers and any mistakes and ambiguity in language were detected before circulation. However it appears that there is some slip in the policy so announced. These companies were ‘taken over by IOC lock, stock and barrel. Giving step brotherly treatment to employees and retirees of these companies is grossly against the rich traditions of this Maharatna which has successfully notched its position among the top 100 corporates in Fortune 500 list and has consistently moved up in its ranking. It is high time that IOC takes the lead and brings in the above two rectifications in the scheme for others in the oil sector to follow suit.God bless those who matter.

The members were requested to fill the form and submit to the police stations. Shri Sitapure would be available for any help required.

As the senior citizens get older their hearing capacity is reduced resulting in less/reduced communication among the partners. To help senior citizens to overcome this shortcoming whistle was given to each member present. This may help them to attract the attention of the life partner.

A young billionaire rushed into a hospital. He asked the receptionist, "How is my mother? When and why was she admitted?"

The doctor said, "Your mother suffered a mild stroke. She was brought to the hospital in time by the elderly couple sitting there.”

The son thanked the elderly couple profusely. "I am sorry I don't recognise you", he said. The lady replied that they didn't know him either. The son was surprised. Perhaps every one who mattered knew him as the most successful businessman in town.

"How do you know my mother?" he asked. The gentleman replied, "she is a member of our WhatsApp group". The son looked dazed.

The gentleman continued, "we have a group on WhatsApp — 60 Plus Group.

Everyone sixty and above is a member. It is the duty of the members to enrol those in their neighbourhood.

Everyone has to send a "Good Morning" message everyday. Similarly, in the afternoon and night. The members can chat, exchange views, etc.

If we do not receive the mandatory messages everyday, the neighbouring members are alerted and they make it a point to visit the member.

“This morning, we didn't get the message from your mother. That's why we are here."

"It is not enough if you have provided your parents with all the facilities money can buy," he continued. "People in our age bracket need people to talk to. When was the last time you visited your mother?"

The son couldn't answer immediately.

"See, that's why we have this group. Otherwise, we 60+ people would be talking to walls and windows", the couple said as they left.

Don't forget that while you are busy growing up, your parents are growing older. They need you desparately when one of the spouses passes away. Their millions and your billions stop working then.

Golf has different meanings to different people – good past time of the elite, a game of focus and patience, a way to build contacts for use in business or profession etc. etc.

Golf means passion for Major B. P. Mathur who has, in his early eighties, added runners - cup to his treasure of shields. Major Mathur's achievement shows age is not a barrier for the

golfer, rather it is his biggest asset. Also the skills required for this game are the same as applicable to officers of the armed forces. Perhaps this is the reason army has patronised this sport and provided ample opportunity to its men to improve their skills while in service and pursue their passion post retirement.

Major BP Mathur (Retd.) is passionately playing golf as pass time after retirement from Indianoil. He recently bagged Runners Up Cup at the Noida Golf Course in New Years Cup Tournament. He is a keen golfer and has played golf at various golf courses of civil and Defence at Delhi and Mumbai leave alone golf courses at Bali, Singapore and Thailand.

Golf more of a passion than a sport

With most of us at that age when its time to give back to our parents, what they gave unto us, i think this is a wonderful initiative.“

It is quite common that the petty workers, drivers, carpenters, house maids etc. win the confidence of senior citizens and other vulnerable sections of the society. They take advance payments and disappear.Normally, we avoid approaching the police because of mental blocks and our fear about harassment by the police force. Most senior citizens do not get themselves registered with local police or register their servants and drivers for the beat constables to keep track.Below is given one example where seeking help of Senior Citizen Cell of police station helped one of the members of IROWA.Sub.: Appreciation for support received by me from ASI, MAHINDER JI and his team (C4E, Janakpuri Police Post)Respected DCP Sahab, I want to convey my gratitude to Delhi Police for excellent support extended to me by ASI MAHINDER JI and his team in persuading plumber, MITHILESH who had collected Rs 5,000/- from my wife for rectifying seepage from the flat above my flat. MITHILESH stopped responding to phone calls when seepage continued after repairs.I approached Senior Citizen Cell at Rajouri Garden Police Station with details of the case where I received proper respect and guidance.ASI MAHINDER JI of C4E Police Post promptly phoned MITHILESH to attend to the work for which he had collected full payment. As expected MITHILESH informed him that he was at his home town in Bihar for treatment of his wife and will come back to Delhi in about 10 days.On my request ASI MAHINDER JI contacted MITHILESH repeatedly over the next 4 months. Ultimately, ASI MAHINDER JI's 'Police Voice on phone' worked and MITHILESH came to my house and did repair work to my satisfaction. My family, friends and acquaintances always denounced my line of action and told me that nothing will happen and I will only waste my effort.Every time I visited Police Post I got best of respect and service from the team members.

Seek support from police when required

We often see on TV film stars appreciating Mumbai Police but have hardly come across good words for Delhi Police.

I am on the Editorial Board of Quarterly Magazine of IROWA - Indianoil Retired Officers Welfare Association (Quarterly circulation 6,000 copies across the country). I propose to print this appreciation in our magazine also with advice to Senior Citizens to seek help from police wherever they need. This will also deter wrong doers from cheating vulnerable sections like Senior Citizens, housewives etc.

With best regards

Yours sincerely

Letter to EditorThe Editorial "Frankly Speaking" of IROWA NEWS, January 2019 issue rightly spells out various "strange ways". Let us not deny the fact that IOC Management is taking due care of the retirees, barring the SABF scheme which affects the pre-2007 retirees. Let us also admit that no welfare scheme, howsoever well-spelt out, will have certain anomalies/lacunae because as the saying goes, there's always room for improvement. But all said and done, you have righty pointed out unfair handling of certain matters i. e. Chairman's/ Director(M)'s lunch etc. You have also aptly pointed out the tendency to be more loyal than the king! The then Director (HR) Shri V. C. Agarwal had correctly said, "it is a matter of attitude". This attitude is experienced even in the retired officers' meetings. In fact after retirement, all are at par. But certain members maintain distance.

A man met an unkown person in a shopping mall the only time, that man pretended his phone battery had gone flat and requested if he could use cellphone to call an uber taxi to take him home. Note that uber records details of any phonecall that contacts them for service. So when the following morning the driver was found dead and the car missing, the uber company produced to the police the details of the phone used in calling the cab and that's how the man who gave his phone to that stranger got tangled in the murder case and had a harrowing time. Please dont give out your phone to any stranger/person to send text or do any other thing on it as you run the risk of being implicated in a crime you know nothing about.

It is safer and advisable to refuse such request. Please share this with your loved ones.

Shocking Incident*70 to 79 years old- “Dangerous age group"*

Israeli scholars have found that there are around two health problems per month for elderly people between the ages of 70 and 79. Surprisingly, the health status of the elderly aged 80-89 is as stable as the 60-69 age group.

70-79 years old is a dangerous period. During this period, efficiency of various organs declines rapidly. It is a period of frequent geriatric diseases (diseases related to old age) and people in this age group are often prone to hyperlipemia, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes.

After entering the age of 80, occurance of these diseases will decline and mental and physical health may return to the level of 60-69 years old.

Thus, the age of 70 to 79 years old is called the “dangerous age group”. As people grow older people want to have a good healthy life. They realise that “Health is Wealth”.

Here are some simple steps called “Doing *ten ones * every day”

1. A glass of water Water is "the best and cheapest health drink". You must drink a glass of water slowly during the following three times/occasions each day:

First glass:

After getting out of bedon an empty stomach.

We lose a lot of water because of our invisible sweating and urine secretion during sleep. Even if we don't feel thirsty after getting up, the body liquids will still be thick due to lack of water.

Second glass:

A glass of water after exercise.

The right amount of exercise is one of the cornerstones of longevity, especially for the elderly.More attention should be paid to effective and reasonable exercise. However, after exercise, special attention should be paid to replenishing water. During exercise, sweat takes away electrolytes and exercise consumes your energy. If you don' t pay at tent ion, you become prone to hypoglycemiaand even syncope after exercise. Therefore, after exercise, it is recommended that the old people drink water to which a small pinch of salt and sugar can be added and dissolved if you wish.

Editor's CommentOnce I shared with an acquaintance that after my retirement I had found hardly any change in friends after

their retirement. They had the same habits and style in turn what he shared with me was that in his housing society there is a gentleman in his 80s who regularly comes for an evening stroll followed by around of gossip with his group of friends. He carries 4 pens clipped to his shirt pocket without fail. This is the force of habit. Even after 30 years of his retirement his set of pens was in service.

To have Long Life, 10 yearsfrom 70 to 79 years

are most crucial

Page 7: Issue No. April 2019 - IROWAAPEXirowaapex.com/data/documents/Irowa News - April - 2019.pdfSatish Mathur, Gurgaon Between us. R D Mathur C-87, Gr. Floor, USHA SADAN Editor Panchsheel

Third glass:

A glass of water before going to bed....

When people are asleep, sweat glands are still draining water. When the body's water is reduced too much, the blood viscosity is increased. A glass of water before going to bed can effectively reduce the blood viscosity and may even slow down aging. This also against Angina, myocardial infarction and other diseases.

2. A bowl of porridge

If you feel sick, eat a bowl of porridge! Wang Shixiong, a famous medical scientist in the Qing Dynasty, in his book named porridge "the first complement of the world".

China Daily Online published a 14-year study conducted by Harvard University on 100,000 people. It found that a bowl of about 28 grams of whole grain cereal porridge per day can reduce 5% to 9%mortality and reduce the chance of getting cardiovascular disease.

Each volunteer was in good physical condition when he participated in the study in 1984, but in the 2010 feedback survey, more than 26,000 volunteers passed away.

It was found that those volunteers who regularly eat whole grains such as porridge, brown rice, corn and buckwheat seem to have avoided all diseases, especially heart disease.

3. A cup of milk

Milk is known as "white blood" and is to the human body. Its nutritional value is well known with a lot of calcium, fat and protein

The recommended daily intake of milk and dairy products is 300 grams. For an ordinary 200 ml bottle of milk, it is enough to drink one or two 200 -ml - bottles or packets of milk a day.

4. An Egg

Eggs can be said to be the most suitable food for human consumption. The body's absorption rate of egg protein can be as high as 98%.

5. An Apple

Modern research believes that apples have the effects of lowering cholesterol, losing weight, preventing cancer, preventing aging, enhancing memory, and making the skin smooth and soft.

The health benefits of different color apples are different:

Red apples have the effect of lowering blood lipids and softening blood vessels Green apple has the effect of nourishing liver and detoxifying, and can fight depression, so it is more suitable for young people to eat.Yellow apples have a good effect on protecting vision.

6. An Onion

The Onion has a very high nutritional value and has many functions, including helping to lower blood sugar, lowering cholesterol, preventing cancer, protecting cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and also anti- bacteria, preventing colds, and supplementing calcium and bones. Eat onions at least three or four times a week.

7. A piece of Fish

Chinese Nutritionists have warned that “eating "four legs" is worse than eating "two legs", eating "two legs" is worse than eating "no legs.”

"Four legs" mainly refers to pigs, cattle, and mutton. Eating too much of these meats is not conducive to weight loss and lowering blood fat;

"Two legs" mainly refers to poultry such as chicken, duck, goose, etc., which are good meat foods;

"No legs" mainly refers to fish and various vegetables. The protein contained in fish is easily digested and absorbed. The amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the fat, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, is relatively good for the body.

8. Gentle Walking

This has a magical anti-aging effect. When adults walk (about 1 kilometre or less) regularly for more than 12 weeks, they will achieve the effect of correct posture and waist circumference, and the body becomes strong and not easily tired.

In addition, walking exercise is also beneficial to treat headache, back pain, shoulder pain, etc., and can promote sleep.

Experts believe that a 30-minute walk a day can get rid of the danger of “adult disease”. People who take 10,000 steps a day will have a lower chance of developing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.

9. A Hobby

Having a hobby, whether it is raising flowers, raising birds, collecting stamps, fishing, or painting, singing, playing chess, and traveling, can help the elderly to maintain extensive contact with society and nature. This broadens the horizons of interest of the elderly. They will love and cherish life.

10. Good Mood

Old people should maintain good emotions as these are extremely important to their health. Common chronic diseases which affect the elderly are closely related to the negative emotions of the elderly:

Many patients with coronary heart disease have angina and myocardial infarction due to stimulation of adverse emotions, resulting in sudden death;

"Bad" temper leads to high blood pressure. In prolonged and severe cases, this can cause stroke, heart failure, sudden death, etc.;

Negative Emotions such as anger, anxiety, and grief can cause blood sugar levels to rise, causing metabolic disorders in the body.

This shows how important it is to have a good mood!

Physical aging is a natural phenomenon, and it is the most sensible choice to fully devote yourself to life and to live the best of the day!

You have no control over your birth and death but the time in between is all yours to enjoy.

Sitting is like smoking.

*Outlook on one aspect of health that most people neglect.*

Here's the problem: we sit an average of 9 to 10 hours a day. So we sit more than we sleep. We sit more than we stand or do any activity.

We sit in our cars. We sit to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We sit to work. We sit to watch TV. We sit at the movie theatre. We sit at the dentist's office. We sit everywhere.

What's the problem with so much sitting?

You'll be surprised to know that it's not really “back pain” or any such thing (although, that can happen sitting.)

The problem with so much sitting is that our bodies were not meant for it.

For millions of year, we were in constant movement for 10-12 hours a day.

Switch that to sitting for 10 hours, and there's no amount of exercise you can do that can undo the damage.

Even if, after your day at the office, you went to the gym for two hours, it wouldn't negate the damage done by sitting.

That's what led Dr.James Levine to coin the phrase “Sitting is the New Smoking!”

When you stand, your body works very differently than when you sit.

Sitting for hours a day causes the following damage.

Because blood flow slows down, you increase your risk of *heart disease*.

Your *insulin* is negatively affected by just one day of sitting for 10 hours.

Sitting increases your *risk of cancer*, for reasons we're still speculating about.

Perhaps it's the antioxidant processes that are engaged when we are in movement.

Sitting compresses your body, *slowing down digestion,* leading to cramps, heartburn, constipation and bloating.

Brain function slows down when we sit.

Your *brain* gets less blood and oxygen.

Because of the above, mood worsens.

Posture gets worse, leading to strained neck and shoulders.

Your entire body degenerates when you sit 10 hours a day.

Standing requires tensing of the abdominal muscles.

Sitting leads to weak abs, leading to mobility issues.

*Varicose* veins develop.

Your *bones* get weaker.

One study found that you can *increase your lifespan* by two years by sitting down three hours or less a day.

Another study found that each hour spent watching *TV after 25 reduces your life expectancy by 22 minutes*.

On the other hand, each *cigarette reduces your life expectancy by 11 minutes.*

Sitting is the new smoking

8 | IROWA NEWS APRIL 2019

*Hence… sitting is the new smoking!* multiplied by 2

Though in today's world during working life we have limited options for increasing our physical activity but we can look after our health better post retirement when our fitness and active life style definitely increases our value for our family and the society.

CAUTION: You must consult your doctor before changing your daily regime and keep the changeover gradual.

To get UKG admission

The child could not understand why they brought her there..

When we all were standing, the school principal started to converse with the child....yes...in English only! This is one of the most memorable interviews I have ever witnessed in my life..

Here goes..

“What’s your name?”

“Sita”

“Good. Tell me something you know”

“I know many things. Tell me what you want...!”

Alas, there is no better point for not getting the admission!

Sita’s mother was trying to make up the situation but the principal stopped her..

Turning to the child, she said.. “Tell any rhyme or story which you know..”

Again,”Which one you want.. Rhyme or Story!?”

“Ok. Plz tell me a story..”

“Do you want to hear what I studied or what I wrote..!?”

Taken to surprise, she asked “Oh! you write stories...???”

“Why should I not write..?”

Now even I was taken aback but she was impressed with the answer. She ( including us) would have not heard such a story in our life...

Ok, tell me story which you have written.

Sita said

One day “Ravana kidnapped Sita& took her to Srilanka”

The opening scene failed to impress but still she encouraged the child to continue..

“Rama asked Hanuman’s help to rescue Sita. Hanuman agreed to help Rama ...”

“Then?”

“Now, Hanuman called his friend Spider man.” No one expected this twist in the story!

“Why?”

“Because there are lot of mountains between India and Srilanka, if we have Spiderman we can go easily with his rope...”

“But Hanuman can fly isn’t it.. ?”

“Yes. But he is having Sanjeevi Mountain on one hand so he cannot fly very fast.!”

All is quiet, after a while Sita asked “Should I continue or not?.”.

“Ok plz continue!”

“Hanuman and Spiderman flew to Srilanka and rescued Sita. Sita said Thanks to both!”

“Why”

Awesome ......A story in oneof the schools in Bangalore where

admission is considered impossible!!!

You fail only when you stop trying

Once there was a man who did not make it to University. So, his mother got him a wife. After the marriage, he worked as a teacher in a primary school. Due to the lack of experience, he was squashed by the students in less than a week.

When he returned home, his wife dried his tears. She comforted him with these words. 'When one is too full, he could either pour it out what's in him or he just could not pour it out at all. You should not be too sad about it. Probably there is a more suitable job waiting for you out there.'

Later on, he found another job and not for long, he was fired due to his slow working. This time, his wife commented. 'There are always people who are skilful and non-skilful. Some have experience from their years of work. As for you, you were in school all this while. So, how could you acquire these needed skills?'

He went for a number of jobs but never stayed long in those jobs. Each time, he would return home with a dejected spirit. His wife would always comfort him and never for once, she was disappointed or resentful.

He was in his thirties when he aquired a flair in languages. He became a counselor in a school for the deaf and mute. Later on, he opened a school for the disabled. A few years later, he set up chain of stores in different cities and provinces selling apparatus & equipment for the disabled. He became a multi-millionaire.

One day he asked his wife. 'When I had bleakfutureafter repeated failures, what's the reason that you had so much faith in me?'

His wife gave him a very simple reply. She said,

'When a piece of land is not suitable for planting wheat, we could try planting beans. If the beans are not growing well, we could try planting fruits or gourds. If the vegetation is not economical, we can instead scatter buckwheat seeds. These seeds will one day bloom into flowers. On this land itself, there will be one seed that will germinate and grow.'

After having listened to his wife's explanation, he cried. His wife's faith, love, patience, and persistence in him is liken to the one seed in the land. This is the seed that persists and creates the miracle on this piece of land.

"In this world, there is not a single person who is useless. It is just that some have not positioned themselves firmly in the right place"

8 advices to be learnt:

1. When we do not value things, a mountain of gold will not bring us happiness.

2. When we are not tolerant, no matter how many friends we have, they will soon leave us.

3. When we have no gratitude, no matter how excellent we are, we would always have difficulties & discontentment in success.

4. When we don't put ourselves into action, no matter how smart we are, we will never realize our dreams.

5. When we don't cooperate with others, no matter how hard we've worked, we can't make it big on our own

6. When we don't know about savings, no matter how rich we strike, we won't be wealthy.

7. When we don't know how to be contented, even how wealthy we are, we are still not blissful.

8. When we don't understand wellness, any advanced medical treatment will not bring longevity.

“When you are helped you should say Thanks!”

So Sita requested Hanuman to call Hulk...”

All were surprised. She realized our curiosity and said “ Now Sita is there, so to take her safely back to Rama she called Hulk”

“What??? “Hanuman can carry Sita right?”

“Yes. But he has Sanjeevi Mountain in one hand and has to hold spider man on the other”

No one could control thier smiles. “ So when they all started for India they met my friend Akshay! “

“How come Akshay there now?”

“Because its my story and I can bring any one there!”

The principal didn’t get angry but waited for the next twist.

Then all of them startedfor India and landed at Bangalore Majestic Bus Stop!

Now I asked,”Why they have landed atMajestic Bus Stop?

“Because they forgot the way& Hulk got an idea and called Dora!”

I came to know about Dora only there...!

“Dora came and she took Sita to Malleshwaram 5th cross ..... that’s all!”

She finished the story with a smile..

The principal asks “Why malleshwaram 5th cross...?

“Because sita lives there &I am Sita!!!”

The principal was impressed and embraced the child. She was admitted in UKG & was gifted with a Dora doll...

Kids can really amaze... but we clip their wings (creativity) expecting them to do things as we see them right & not from their viewpoint.

Let’s give every child freedom to do their own things& watch their dreams come true...
