Congratulations to all, but special acknowledgements must go to the Champions and Runner Up Champions at each year level who displayed their talents on the track and field. They deserved to feel very proud when presented with their medallions. Congratulations to Phoenix the winning faction, whose name will go on our Honour Board for 2016. Well done also to Phoenix for their continued effort throughout the year to come out winners of the Spirit Cup. Pegasus won the inaugural Junior Athletics Shield awarded to the Pre Primary winning faction. Many thanks to Mr Biddle for his organisation of both carnivals. Events like this are a real team effort however they need a manager and a leader who can organise the rest of us to carry out our individual roles on the day. Of course we always need a loyal support group and cheer squad so a special thanks to those parents who were able to make it on the day. WOW! How popular were those sausage sizzles as well? Thanks so much to our Master Chef P&C parents who cooked and filled the orders. Their great organisation saw all lunches delivered on time and very much appreciated. Many thanks to Helping Hands (our onsite before and after school care) who donated sausages and to the many other supporters listed later in the newsletter. Mr Batt’s Promotion As the parents of Mr Batt’s class already know, he was recently confirmed as one of two successful applicants to be selected for the Deputy Principal positions at the new school to be opened in 2017 in Baldivis. We offer our congratulations to Mr Batt knowing that this promotion is absolutely well deserved. It is a wonderful opportunity and privilege to be a part of the leadership team that opens a new school, however, because it is a new school, it means that Mr Batt’s appointment starts at the beginning of Term 4. Mrs Gopi will be taking over Mr Batt’s classroom teacher role. She brings a very wide and extensive experience with her as well as having beliefs about teaching and learning that are strongly aligned with Ranford Primary. We sincerely thank Mr Batt for all he has given to Ranford Primary in almost six years with us. His expertise and commitment to our school will be missed by colleagues and students alike, and I am sure I can include our parent community in this sentiment. We wish him all the very best in this new and exciting role and look forward to hearing about his new school. Celebrating Teaching and Learning

Many thanks to all of the families who attended our Celebrating Teaching and Learning Open Night on Wednesday night. Again, we had a sudden day of Spring to make the evening even more enjoyable. The classroom displays, as well as the specialist areas and the Library (Media Arts), certainly gave everyone a wonderful insight into the quality of the teaching and learning programs that motivate and engage our students on a daily basis. Our students were very proud to share their classrooms and different activities with their parents (and grandparents). Many thanks to all staff for the organisation that went into the night.

Holidays

It is very scary indeed when Christmas displays start appearing in the shops! It is a reminder of how quickly our busy Term 4 will disappear. So, make the most of the break, enjoying family and friends and have a safe and relaxing holiday. Please remember we have two pupil free days to begin next term. Students re-commence school on Wednesday, 12th October. Don’t forget, we also have a further pupil free day on Friday, 4th November (at the end of Week 4), giving our families an extra long weekend while staff work on curriculum plans for next year.

Bronwyn Tester, Principal

School of Instrumental Music (SIM) Year 5 and 6 in 2017

Ranford Primary has been allocated a Year 5 SIM class in 2017 as well as a Year 6 class. Currently, all students in Year 4 and 5 are being tested. If successful, selected students will have the opportunity to participate in a SIM program playing the flute, clarinet or trumpet. Students will attend classes for half an hour each week at school during school time. For students in Year 5 in 2017, it means they will be part of a two year music program.

Many past Ranford students who have participated in the SIM program have gone on to enrol in specialist high schools where music is offered. We look forward to this program being offered to more students over the next two years.

Kylie Godfrey, Deputy Principal

Fun Run

We are looking forward to the school Fun Run in Week 2 of Term 4 on Friday, 21st October at 2.00pm. Please return forms with money by Friday 28th October.

Please remind your child about being safe in collecting pledges. We encourage students to find sponsorships within their family and friends.

Students are to wear clothing to suit the weather on the day plus closed in running shoes. Please remind your child to wear their hat and if they have sunscreen it can be applied at lunch time. Students will be able to take their water bottles to the oval with them to drink during the run. If a child has collected or promised a minimum of $5.00 they will receive a box drink during the Fun Run.

Prizes will be presented to students at a school assembly next term. They consist of a family movie voucher (2 adults, 2 children) for the family that raises the most money and a $10.00 voucher for students who raise over $100.00.

Thank-you for your support of this annual school fundraiser.

David Batt, Deputy Principal

From the Library

Thank you to everyone who helped or supported our Book Fair during Book Week. Our Library is adding $1,672 worth of books to the shelves which is absolutely wonderful. Because of the great support Scholastic has once again offered their end of year "Buy One Get One Free" Book Fair which will be held in November. Hopefully we will again see you there.

Vicki Simpson, Library Officer

Room 26 – Materials & Properties

This term, Room 26 has been learning about materials and their properties. Part of this, was to investigate the decomposition of materials. In groups, we put an apple core, plastic, paper, polystyrene cube and fabric into a container and covered them in moist soil. The containers were kept in the same location and out of direct sunlight to avoid large differences in temperature and to keep the test fair. After two weeks, we examined the materials and the level of decomposition that had occurred. From our investigation, we discovered the apple core and paper were biodegradable and the fabric began to decompose however, the plastic and polystyrene cube did not decompose at all. As a result of our investigation, we explored the positive, negative and interesting facts about biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. Plastic, for example, can be recycled however, its decomposition rate is nil or extremely slow and may remain in landfills for hundreds of years. Plastic can be oil or petroleum based and scientists are working on developing new types of plastic that will be biodegradable. The students have learnt the importance of reusing plastic bags or placing them into recycling bins at the supermarkets.

P&C News

Hi Ranford Primary Community,

Thanks to all those who were instrumental in our Faction Day last week. It took a combined team of Staff, Teachers, Parent helpers, P&C Members and other volunteers to make it all come together - but I’m sure that those who attended will agree that it was an awesome day!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge “Thanks” to all who have contributed to making Term 3 a huge success! Here’s wishing everyone a restful and rejuvenating break. Stay Safe!! See you all in Term 4.

Peter Edalere, P&C President

Uniform Shop News

NEW OPENING TIMES Wednesdays - 8.40am to 9.15am

The old style faction shirts are no longer available. All remaining shirts have been donated to the Shoe Box Christmas Appeal.

Clearance items are still available, Active/Dance Pants $20 each or 2 pairs for $39 Socks $5 each or 2 pairs for $9 Slouch Hats $10 each Small and medium left only

We have had a few enquiries about the hats. To clarify, we currently carry 2 styles of hat. The Slouch hat with the wider brim, or the bucket hat, with the smaller brim. The bucket hat has proven more popular with students, so the P & C have opted to discontinue the slouch hat. These items are still considered uniform, but once they are sold out, will no longer be stocked.

In order to avoid carrying the liability of lots of stock over the Christmas break period, there will not be a top up of stock until classlist day next year. Should we sell out of items that you require, you are welcome to complete an order form (available on the website) and we will deliver your order to your child’s classroom.
