It is an unfortunate fact of life that as rig rates go up, formation evaluation programmes get cut. Most of us have to work really hard to justify cutting core and running the logs we know should be run to meet the well objec-tives. So help is at hand. On 18th April we have a special event, Simon Stromberg from Senergy will be giv-ing his excellent Value of Information Course at Burlington House. Be-cause this is a course rather than a seminar, we have to restrict numbers to 20, or a first-come-first-served ba-sis and it is all pay. Those lucky enough to get a place will learn the theory and methods behind rigorous and consistent value of information analysis. At the end of the course you will have the skills and tools for quickly calculating value of informa-tion. All the Best

Message From the President At our last evening meeting we had two excellent talks from students who have benefited from LPS member-ship. Mauricio Castellanos from Lon-don South Bank University used data supplied by LPS sponsor Tullow Oil in his project and the LPS has just agreed to award Mauricio with a Stu-dent Bursary. David Hartigan from Leicester University is receiving a Student Grant from the LPS to part-fund his PhD. Last year LPS pro-vided £5000 in student grants and bursaries under our Iain Hillier Award Scheme and, so far this year we have approved awards of £5500. This is one of the most im-portant functions of the LPS, but we can't do it without the support of our members and sponsors. So many thanks to all those who pay their membership fees, attend the evening events and seminars as well as per-suading their managers to sponsor the LPS. Talking of seminars don't forget the Pressure and Sampling seminar on 13th March, it promises to be a very interesting and enjoyable event. Then on 2nd April SPWLA Distinguished Speaker Austin Boyd will be talking at our evening meet-ing.

Aims This course will teach you the theory and methods behind rigorous and consistent value
of information analysis. At the end of this course you will have the skills and tools for
quickly calculating value of information.
Benefits You will learn the value of information analysis, the definition of value, the definition of
state-of nature and risk analysis, how to use a decision tree and tree notation, how to use
information and defining decisions, the matrix method, how to define and handle imper-
fect information in the value of information analysis.
Who should attend? Reservoir engineers, geoscientists, petrophysicists and managers who need to justify the
collection of new data. Anyone who needs to understand the cost benefit relationship
when deciding on data acquisition programs. Attendees should be familiar with basic oil
field economics.
Course Instructor Simon Stromberg is the Global Technical Head of Petrophysics for Senergy. With 15
years of experience with consultancy firms and operators, Simon has experience in pro-
ject management, decision analysis, risk evaluation and value of information analysis.
Limited spaces, first come first served £150 for LPS / SPE / PESGB / AFES members

EAGE would like to invite you to the successful Education Days, London edition 2012. This year, the
event will be held from 19-23 March. The centre of all this educational activity will be the Hilton London
Gatwick, South Terminal, which is ideally located for those travelling by air, public transportation or car.
The programme offers one- and two-day short courses (from 09:00 hrs - 17:00 hrs) to EAGE members
and others. It provides an ideal platform to further develop your knowledge through industry-specific
courses and to catch up with all the latest developments in the various geoscience disciplines. A fixed
item on the menu is the EAGE Education Tour (EET).
1. Monday 19 March
Advanced Marine Seismic Acquisition Techniques Gordon Brown – Schlumberger
A practical approach is adopted and designed to give the participant an up-to-date understanding of recent
developments in marine seismic acquisition technology.
2. Monday 19 March
Well Test Analysis Shiyi Zheng – London South Bank University
This one-day course is designed for reservoir engineers, production engineers, geologists, geophysicists
and petrophysicists to master the basic theory and skills in well testing.
3. Tuesday 20 & Wednesday 21 March
Pragmatic Sequence Stratigraphy Gary Hampson – Imperial College
This course will provide an introduction to the principles and methods of sequence stratigraphy as applied
to subsurface prediction.
4. Wednesday 21 March
Seismic Surveillance for Reservoir Delivery (EET 6) Olav Barkved – BP
The course aims to provide some context for what is driving the dynamic changes linked to producing a
hydrocarbon reservoir and what we should expect to observe using seismic technologies in various geo-
logical settings.
5. Thursday 22 & Friday 23 March
Seismic Imaging: A Review of the Techniques, their Principles, Merits and Limitations Etienne Robein – ERT
The course will present in simple terms (no equations!) the principles of different techniques in each class
of methods, while pointing out their respective merits and limitations. The relationship between acquisi-
tion and imaging on the one hand and interpretation and imaging on the other, will also be discussed.
6. Thursday 22 & Friday 23 March
Understanding Subsurface Pressure and Pressure Prediction Phill Clegg – IkonScience
The principal objective of the course is to teach participants how pressure data relate to the safe and effi-
cient exploration and exploitation of petroleum reservoirs.
