Coaster is marking its 40th anniversary

since arriving in Australia, making it

one of the country's most enduring

automotive nameplates.

The Coaster was launched in Japan as the 'Light Bus' in 1963. In 1969 the vehicle underwent a partial redesign and was later renamed Coaster - a name which it has continued to use for almost 50 years. It arrived in Australia in 1977 and is about to get a complete styling and safety redesign.

It’s upgrade is focused on enhanced safety with the introduction of airbags for the driver and front-passenger seats, and a stronger frame that improves body structure and rigidity.

It also features new exterior and interior designs, a more spacious cabin, larger doorsteps for easier entry and exit, and an additional passenger seat - bringing the total to 22.

Coaster is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 4.0-litre direct-injection turbo-diesel engine that meets Euro 5 emissions regulations. It delivers 110kW of power at 2700rpm and 397Nm of torque at 1800rpm.

News of the latest Coaster comes as the long-running model passes a significant sales milestone with the 20,000th delivery in Australia.

The service team at Cooma Toyota have seen a few more-mature Toyotas over the years, but not many are as well-travelled as local wool classer Mal Adams’ 35 year old Landcruiser.

The Landcruiser’s odometer has just ticked over the one million mark and Mal says it is has a ‘freak engine’ and doesn’t look like quit-ting any time soon.

Mal runs sheep and cattle at his family farm ‘Wahroon’ and his Dad bought the second-hand 1982 Landcruiser HJ 47 over 30 years ago. Since then it’s had the odd upgrade like power steering and re-upholstered seats. It had an engine rebuild at 600,000km but, other than that, remains in almost original condition.

“Ol’ Yella”, as Mal fondly calls it, has seen a few places in the

million kilometre journey, from New South Wales to Queensland then up through the Northern Territory. In fact, he’s driven it from Cooma to Darwin twice.

“I left school and took it to Queensland. It knows every town in Queensland from Charleville to Longreach,” Mal said.

The Landcruiser never misses a beat around the farm and it’s ever reliable when he needs it the most – in fact, when we spoke to Mal he had just come back from a mate’s 40th at Temora - just 320kms up the road.

“We’ve worked on a few older vehicles but this one is quite remarkable”, said Jason Kirkpatrick from Cooma Toyota.

“Toyota certainly knows how to make vehicles that last.”

Toyota has extended its successful sponsorship of the Adelaide Football Club to support the Crows AFL Women's team in its inaugural season.

Toyota has backed the Crows since the club played its first AFL season in 1991.

The new partnership arrangement to support the club's women's side will see Toyota represented at the Crows' four AFL Women's home games in 2017 and again in 2018.

Adelaide Crows CEO Andrew Fagan said the club was thrilled that Toyota had extended its support.

“Toyota's long-term commitment to the club has been instrumental to our success on and off the field and we're delighted that they have extended their support to our women's team in its first season,” Mr Fagan said.

“For more than 25 years we have worked closely with Toyota to the benefit of both organisations and it's extremely pleasing to have their backing for the AFL Women's competition.”

Tony Cramb, Executive Director Sales and Marketing, said both the company and the club had benefited from a consistent, long-term relationship.

“We're proud to continue to strengthen our relationship with the Adelaide Crows and now support the women's team in addition to our existing partnership with the men's team - an opportunity we happily welcome,” Mr Cramb said.

Toyota is the Premier Partner of the Australian Football League, a position it has held for 13 years, with a particular emphasis on the grassroots Good for Footy program that supports local clubs.

The new car stands out in the Toyota range and its segment with a coupe-like upper body, powerful underpinnings, engaging driving dynamics, punchy turbo petrol engine and advanced cabin quality.

A high level of standard features add to the appeal, with every C-HR equipped with advanced safety technologies and in-demand features such as satellite navigation, alloy wheels and dual-zone automatic air-conditioning.

The top-of-the-range Koba adds luxury features such as leather-accented seats, keyless entry and ignition, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lamps and innovative nanoe technology that moisturises cabin air.

A vibrant colour palette accentuates the extroverted styling of the C-HR and is taken further on Koba grades with a two-tone paint option, adding a white or black roof to specific body hues.

EXPRESS YOURSELFPersonalisation is a by-word for the newest Toyota with more than 60 Toyota Genuine accessories available encouraging owners to express their individuality.

Customisation options include eight alloy wheel designs; coloured exterior garnishes, wheel caps and mirror covers; and roof cross-bars for bicycles and other sports equipment.

Tony Cramb, Executive Manager, Sales and Marketing says C-HR's design brings together the best aspects of a hatchback, a coupe and an SUV.

“C-HR will bring new customers to the Toyota brand - typically younger, image-conscious people who take a more emotional approach to purchasing a car compared with our more traditional customers,” Mr Cramb said.

“This vehicle is built for customising,” he said. “Its distinctive looks cry out for owners to personalise it in their own self-image. It's quite possible a proud owner could use wheel design changes as a means of refreshing their car from time to time.”

SAFE ASC-HR offers a high level of standard safety features including a pre-collision safety system, active cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert with steering assist and reversing camera.

All variants are equipped with seven airbags, stability and traction control, auto high beam, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors and hill-start assist control.

Toyota has brought excitement and driving pleasure to

the SUV market with the launch of its radically styled

C-HR, or Coupe High Rider.

ON THE INSIDEInterior space is similar to Corolla, comfortably accommodating four adults and offering 377 litres of luggage space along with a 60/40 split-fold rear seat.

The C-HR has a wrap-around dashboard, soft-touch surfaces with a 6.1-inch display audio touch-screen as the centrepiece, extending proudly from the instrument panel rather than being enclosed by it. As a result, the dashboard is set low, contributing to driver visibility.

Offered for the first time by Toyota in Australia, the 8NR-FTS adopts advanced technologies that allow the engine to change from Otto cycle to Atkinson cycle under low loads.

It features a direct-injection system, vertical vortex high-tumble air-flow intake ports, an exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder-head and advanced heat management.

Toyota's VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) system is upgraded to VVT-iW (Wide) allowing even more flexibility in the valve-timing.

Displacing 1,197cm3, the engine delivers maximum power of 85kW from 5,200-5,600rpm and constant peak torque of 185Nm between 1,500 and 4,000rpm.

It can be mated to either an “intelligent” six-speed manual gearbox (2WD) or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in 2WD or AWD, both of which offer three drive modes - Eco, Normal and Sport.

ADVANCED HEAT MANAGEMENTA high compression ratio of 10:1 is the key to achieving excellent fuel consumption without compromising performance.Intake ports generate a more intense “vertical vortex” flow while the shape of the piston improves in-cylinder turbulence. As a result, fuel and intake air mix faster, forming a more homogeneous mixture, leading to higher combustion speed. Advanced heat-management improves fuel economy and also reduces the risk of knocking. The bottom of each piston is cooled by oil-jets and the cooling of the cylinder head is separated from that of the engine block, lowering the temperature in the combustion chamber while keeping the block itself hot enough to reduce friction.Direct injection helps dissipate the heat in the combustion chamber. Intake charge air passes through the intercooler, which uses an independent low-temperature cooling circuit.

FROM OTTO TO ATKINSON Toyota's VVT-i system operates on both the intake and the exhaust side, and promotes maximum torque at all engine speeds. The addition of VVT-iW allows for delayed closing of the intake valve, which means the engine can operate in both the Otto and Atkinson cycles. The latter is used in extremely low load conditions to shorten the effective compression stroke. The intake valve remains open for a fraction of time after the compression stroke has set in, allowing part of the gas charge to be pushed back into the intake. Pumping losses are reduced, since the pressure on the piston is lower, and the throttle valve can be opened wider.

INTELLIGENT MANUAL TRANSMISSIONThe intelligent manual transmission increases the engine revs when downshifting to ensure a smooth gear shift and during up-shifts to improve comfort by reducing clutch shock. The manual gearbox's 1st and 2nd gears are short to assist acceleration performance from standstill while 5th and 6th gears are long to promote fuel efficiency.A preload differential distributes torque evenly to the wheels to enhance stability, especially on slippery roads. The continuously variable transmission improves fuel economy by selecting the highest ratio available, taking into account terrain and driving input. When driving spiritedly, the system will detect the greater throttle input and increase engine revs to allow more rapid acceleration response. The M-mode (manual) can also be selected to access 7 simulated gears that offer the driver precise control for more responsive acceleration.

C-HR STATE-OF-THE-ART POWERTRAIN

The C-HR is equipped with a new 1.2-litre turbocharged

four-cylinder petrol engine (8NR-FTS) that delivers

low-end torque, quick response and high efficiency.

The TNGA platform, designated GA-C, is constructed so that key components are placed lower in the structure, enabling designers to produce a dynamic-looking car with lower roof and bonnet heights. While C-HR looks compact from the outside, it is marginally longer and wider than a Corolla hatch, employing the higher ride height of an SUV and a longer wheelbase. Dynamic assessments of C-HR were based on chief engineer Hiroyuki Koba's vision that the new vehicle must demonstrate response, linearity and consistency.

“Response” refers to the fact that the car needs to react immediately to any driver input. “Linearity” means the vehicle must respond precisely in line with the amount of driver input.

“Consistency” relates to how the car reacts in the same predictable way, no matter what the speed or road conditions. The C-HR is the second production model to use the GA-C platform.

Offering at least 60% greater rigidity than Toyota's previous C-segment platform, the GA-C has been strategically adapted to suit the particular requirements of the C-HR.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMC-HR's CVT variants can be equipped with Toyota's Dynamic Torque Control AWD system to provide maximum traction, cornering stability and driver control while also saving fuel. This compact, lightweight system uses information on vehicle speed, yaw rate and steering and throttle angles to control torque distribution automatically between the front and rear axles. It saves fuel by driving only the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising, switching to AWD when needed via an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential housing.

ADVANCED BODY CONTROLC-HR uses its front-wheel sensors to monitor bumps and dips in the road, enabling the engine to adjust torque delivery. For example, if the vehicle's nose lifts because of the road surface, the drive force is reduced to counteract this. If the vehicle's nose dips, the drive force is increased to smooth it out.

LOW CENTRE OF GRAVITYThe basic design of the GA-C platform allows for a low centre of gravity which contributes to an engaging drive and balanced handling, with minimal body roll.TNGA-based platforms allow engine-bay components to be set low. In the C-HR, this has enabled the engine to be angled slightly rearward, resulting in a low bonnet profile while and contributing to the low centre of gravity.

STEERING AND SUSPENSIONC-HR's suspension and linear steering have been designed to deliver remarkable driving precision, ride comfort and composure.

The C-HR uses steel ball joints rather than traditional rubber bushings to provide a high level of twist rigidity, adding to the car's precise and linear handling.

The shock absorber is angled forward optimising load path and, along with the overall compact design, ensures maximum luggage space.

NEW PLATFORM DELIVERS ENGAGING DYNAMICS

C-HR is built on a Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform that offers fluent, engaging driving behaviour due to its exceptional rigidity, low centre of gravity and optimised suspension layouts.

Australia's best-selling car is no longer a car - it's a ute!Toyota's “unbreakable” HiLux has made history by becoming the first vehicle other than a passenger car to be the country's best-seller for an entire calendar year.

As the top choice for Australian motorists in 2016, HiLux - which also set a new national record for 4x4 sales - edged out the ever-popular Toyota Corolla, which held the No. 1 spot for the previous three years.

The all-Toyota contest for sales supremacy went down to the wire with HiLux achieving 42,104 sales last year while local buyers snapped up 40,330 Corolla sedans and hatches.

The history-making HiLux-Corolla “quinella” coincides with Toyota achieving

sales leadership in Australia for the 20th time in the past 26 years, including the past 14 years in a row.

Toyota, which was the best-selling brand in every state and territory, helped lift the entire industry to a new sales record of almost 1.18 million vehicles in 2016, 2.0 per cent ahead of the previous record set in 2015.

Local motorists bought 209,610 vehicles from Toyota dealers last year, 91,393 more than any other brand and a gain of 1.6 per cent compared with Toyota's sales the previous year.

It was Toyota's best annual sales since 2013 and the 12th time the brand has sold more than 200,000 vehicles in Australia in a year.

Toyota was the only automaker to have three vehicles among the top 10 sellers in 2016 with Camry - which topped the market in December with 4,850 sales - in sixth position overall. Camry has been Australia's best-selling mid-size car since 1994.

Tony Cramb, Executive Director Sales and Marketing, said the victory by HiLux marked a significant turning point in the Australian automotive industry.

“HiLux has made history as the first vehicle of its type to stand on top of the sales podium in Australia because it has broad appeal with the car-buying public,” Mr Cramb said.

“The buyer profile has changed dramatically in recent years, with HiLux progressively offering the upmarket features and comfort demanded by families while maintaining its traditional popularity among tradespeople as the consummate workhorse,” he said.

“As recently as 2011, the biggest-selling variant was the 4x2 single cab-chassis in

tough-as-nails Workmate trim - a vehicle where “air-conditioning” meant you opened the windows.

“While demand for that variant has not diminished, and air-conditioning has been made standard, we now sell almost twice as many top-of-the-range 4x4 SR5 double cabs.

“In fact, shifting consumer preferences resulted in several 'firsts' in 2016: the SR5 was our biggest-selling HiLux grade and accounted for more than half all HiLux 4x4 sales; and an automatic transmission was specified by the majority of buyers.”

Mr Cramb said the Corolla sedan would receive a facelift in the early part of 2017 while the Corolla hatch would receive a specification upgrade.

“Corolla can hold its head high because, even though it was pipped by HiLux, it retains its crown as Australia's best-selling passenger car,” he said.

Japan Welcomes Toyota Australia’s best

How would you like a trip to Japan to see the best of Toyota’s Museums and Plants plus throw in a smattering of Japanese sights and culture? This could be you!

Each year the National Skills Champions from around the World make the journey to Toyota’s home town to be inducted into the International Assembly of Customer Service Champions.

Australian 2015 champions; Chloe Butler - New Town Toyota (Parts Sales), Simone Gilbert - Phil Gilbert Toyota (Guest Experience Manager), Barry Pech - Taylor Toyota (Technician), Darren Raitelli - Don West Toyota (Diagnosis Technician) and Heidi Samuel - Adelaide Hills Toyota (Service Advisor), met up in Sydney to commence their journey.

On arrival, host David Cooper from Northern Region checked them into the Nagoya Kanko then wasted no time in setting off to meet fellow Champions from other distributors for orientation.

“Hearing all the different languages and seeing faces from around the world starts to open our eyes to just how broad the global Toyota company is,” said David.

“My favourite part of the trip was being able to experience the trip with our Aussie crew and partners,” said Heidi. “Also being able

to meet all sorts of new and interesting people in your field from around the world, and finding out our working lives are very much the same!”

For Darren, the trip was his first overseas adventure. “I found the Japanese people to be very polite, friendly and considerate. I find their culture fascinating,” he said.

Barry agreed and added “The Japanese people tried very hard to help us when needed and negotiating the language barriers at times was quite amusing.”

TAKING IN THE SIGHTSFirst stop, Kyoto, where the group got to ride in the Shinkansen, Japan’s bullet train.

“If you ever have the chance to travel on a Shinkansen take it,” said David. “These trains are incredibly fast, quiet and smooth. Just seeing them glide into the station is other-worldly.

We covered the 150Km Nagoya to Kyoto in 35 minutes, watching the patchwork country side flash by.”

Barry’s favourite part of the trip was the Kyoto tour. “The bullet train was nothing like I have ever experienced and would like to revisit Japan in the future to travel the full length of the Shinkansen,” he said.

“We visited the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. The Japanese culture is very strong in their beliefs - it was a pleasure to see how strong and important culture is to them.”

Next stop was the Toyota Plant Tour and Commemorative Museum.

The Motomachi plant was producing Crown and XX models with Hybrid drivetrains for the domestic market. This provided a great overview of the Toyota Production System (TPS) from the suspended walkway over the assembly area.

The Museum covers the evolution of the company from the development of many spinning and weaving machines right through to the latest in robotics and fuel cell vehicles and the LFA.

THE MAIN EVENTWhile the sightseeing and immersion in Japanese culture are unforgettable experiences, the highlight of the trip is definitely the Induction Ceremony.

“This was by far my greatest career highlight,” said Barry. “It was a great achievement to represent Australia at the ceremony. The whole day was an exciting process from the rehearsal through to the after party. It was more than I ever expected.”

Each Champion was invited to the stage to receive their crystal trophy. Photos were taken of the individuals and groups, before all Champions took a pledge to take Pride in Excellence. Then they all had a chance to relax at the after party with Japanese Taiko Drumming and dancers in traditional costumes with fine food and drinks.

“I felt very proud and grateful,” said Heidi. “Not many people get to represent your country and experience this, and to know I was one of a select few made me feel very humble. It was also a sense of achievement knowing my name will be forever on the Champions Board. ”

THAT’S A WRAPAs the tour wound down and the group returned home, they reflected on their reward.

“The induction ceremony made me realise how important we, as Technicians, Guest Experience, Parts, or Service Advisors are as gears in the big machine of TMC and how much they appreciate us,” said Darren.

“Winning National Skills hadn't really hit home until I was inducted on stage in Japan,” said Barry.“It has certainly inspired me to follow the Toyota philosophy ‘Pride in Excellence’.”

And final words from Heidi – “I really didn't know what to expect with the induction but again everything, the daily activities, sightseeing, ceremony was very well planned out and enjoyable.

“During the ceremony, it was awesome to see everyone up on stage in their respective categories and be celebrated as winners within the Toyota family.

“I believe winning National Skills and being able to experience the trip has helped in my day to day life as a Service Advisor. It makes me strive to do the best I can do, and try to go beyond even when there are 'curve balls' being thrown at you. We all are one family, one big Toyota family no matter where you live in this world.”

It was also a sense of achievement knowing my

name will be forever on the Champions Board.”"" Heidi

SAFETY CORNER

VEHICLE HOIST (Lift) and SUPPORT LOCATIONSVehicle hoists used incorrectly can be dangerous – even fatal. Crushing and trapping injuries can occur at any time so you must be aware of the correct procedures and safety checks required to use safely.

A bulletin was sent to all dealers last year on Vehicle Hoists reminding Dealers that safe work practices for lifting vehicles can be found in Toyota Repair Manuals in the General Section of the repair manual.

Take a look at the example below on where to find the recommended lifting points and type of vehicle hoist to use in the Repair Manual for the current generation Land Cruiser 70 series.

Lexus has revealed a yacht concept that demonstrates how it could expand into new areas of lifestyle and recreation.

Lexus Sport Yacht Concept

The Lexus Sport Yacht concept was revealed at Di Lido Island on Biscayne Bay in Florida.

The concept features advanced Lexus styling and handling for eight guests. It is powered by twin high-performance Lexus V8 engines and was inspired by the Toyota Marine Department's development of a new range of Ponam premium yachts that will soon be launched in Japan.

The Marine Business Department of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) was founded in 1997 to develop premium yachts using advanced technology and quality control methods perfected in making Lexus luxury cars.

The upper deck and outer hull are seamlessly bonded around the inner structure. Each piece is a single massive hand-laid composite of two-part polyurethane epoxy resin reinforced with carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, or CFRP - the same technology used in the Lexus LFA supercar.

The Lexus Sport Yacht concept's unique CFRP construction saves nearly 1,000kg compared with a similar yacht constructed in fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP). The underwater hull design is stepped to reduce resistance or drag and improve handling balance at high speeds.

The air conditioned forward passenger cabin is finished in Lexus leather with wood and glass details. It has a sofa seating for six with a table plus a galley with a two-burner stove, sink and under-counter refrigerator while the head includes a shower.

As a concept, the Lexus Sport Yacht is a bespoke one-off project with no plan or production.

LEXUS TAKES to the SEAS

Toyota has unveiled the Concept-i - a vehicle that demonstrates Toyota's view that the starting point for the vehicles of tomorrow should be the people who use them.

Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Concept-i represents a friendlier, people-focused approach to future mobility.

It has been produced by Toyota's CALTY design centre in California, with user experience technology sourced from the Toyota Innovation Hub in San Francisco.

The basic philosophy for the design is "kinetic warmth", a belief that mobility technology should be warm, welcoming and, above all, fun.

YUI COMES TO LIFEConcept-i uses an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system that builds a relationship with the driver, anticipating their needs, spurring their imaginations and improving their lives.

Concept-i is centred on a next-generation user interface that provides the platform for the vehicle's AI agent, nicknamed "Yui", that uses

light, sound and even touch to communicate critical information.

The AI system uses advanced automated vehicle technologies to help improve driving safety, while allowing users to choose automated or manual driving under certain conditions.

It seamlessly monitors driver attention and road conditions to increase automated driving support to enhance driver engagement or help navigate dangerous driving conditions.

Instead of using screens on the centre console, information is revealed where and when it is needed. Coloured lighting in the footwells indicates whether the vehicle is in automated or manual drive; discreet projectors in the rear deck relay images on the seat pillar to warn about

blind spots; and a head-up display helps keep the driver's eyes and attention on the road.

Even the vehicle's exterior is designed to enable Concept-i to engage with the world around it. Yui appears on the door panels to welcome driver and passengers as they approach the vehicle.

Concept-iThe Future isThis connected autonomous concept of the future will be there to look after you while you drive.

CONGRATULATIONS WILL BROWN

Eighteen-year-old Queenslander Will Brown has been crowned inaugural

Toyota 86 Racing Series Champion following his dominant performances

duringthefinalround.

Toyota has celebrated victory just two events into its comeback to the

World Rally Championship (WRC) with an emotional first place in the

snow and ice of Rally Sweden.

Winning seven of the 15 races over five tracks, Brown took podiums at every round to finish the series with 1278 points, 126 points clear of his nearest rival. For his effort, he received $50,000 cash and a $20,000 “money can't buy” international experience.

Brown will be flown to Germany to attend the Nürburgring 24 Hour race with special access to all the teams and a tour of Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG). He will also drive an exclusive session in the Toyota Le Mans simulator.

“This is such a great category. Toyota has done a great job,” Brown said. “It's something Australian motorsport needed

- a series that's run at an affordable price with the Supercars category.”

Flying to the USA for testing in the F2000 open wheel series, Brown hopes to step into the Supercars Dunlop Series or Porsche Carrera Cup in 2017.

Second place-getter was Dave Sieders who won $30,000 while third place-getter Cameron Hill received $15,000.

Bathurst local Dylan Gulson won the Kaizen Award - awarded to a driver who finishes outside the top three and is judged a 'rising star' based on results, consistency, hard-charging ability, clean passing and personal presentation. He won an entry to a round of New Zealand's Toyota Finance 86 Championship valued at $10,000.

HERE WE GO AGAINThe Toyota 86 Racing Series has confirmed a five-event schedule for 2017, with the series again running as a key support category to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

TOYOTA TAKES OUT ROUND TWO IN SWEDEN

Jari-Matti Latvala in the No.10 Toyota Yaris WRC took a slender 3.8-second lead into the final day, then won all three stages to extend his winning margin to 29.2 seconds.

Latvala leads the WRC driver's championship by four points with Toyota placed second in the manufacturer's title race.

17 YEARS BETWEEN WINSIt was Toyota's first WRC victory since Rally China in 1999 and the first time in three years that any driver other than four-time champion Sébastien Ogier has led the championship.

Latvala expressed his emotions after outdoing his runner-up position in last month's season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo.

“I am so, so happy. For a new team and new car to win its second rally: I really have no words,” he said. “Now we are super-motivated to continue like this: I just can't wait to get to Mexico (the next round).”

Team Chairman Akio Toyoda said he had been looking forward to a victory, but never imagined it would happen so soon.

“It's a great feeling to win a round of the World Rally Championship after a break of 17 years,” he said.
