SWIM SCHOOL
This term two of the key events on
the school calendar are: Year 7 &
8 Swim School held at Blacktown
Swimming Centre. These events
are not only important in develop-
ing and improving our students’
water safety skills but also great
opportunities for our students to
enhance their social skills and
build new friendships and relation-
ships with other students in their
year group.
The week’s activities are lots of
fun and I encourage parents to
ensure their children attend the
program. Payments for Swim
School need to be made next
week.
SERVICE TO THE
SCHOOL ASSEMBLY &
SPORTS ASSEMBLY
Thursday 12th November
marks the first of our formal
celebrations of student
achievement for 2015. The
Service to the School As-
sembly is where we recog-
nise the many students who
undertake important roles in
the school that assist and
support the numerous pro-
grams on offer at QHHS. Our
Service to the School As-
sembly will be held during
Periods 3 & 4. All students
who will be acknowledged at
this assembly, their parents
will be invited to attend, to
share in the recognition of
their child’s achievement.
This year will also see us
stage our first Sports As-
sembly. This assembly will
be during Periods 5 & 6 on
the 12th November. This as-
sembly will give the school

the opportunity to recognise all the out-
standing sporting achievements made by
our students and special acknowledge-
ment to students who have competed in
grade sport for the first time this year.
CAPA SHOWCASE
As always this time of year we are excited
about the encroachment of our CAPA
Showcase, VIVACITY 2015. Our staff and
students involved in this year’s extrava-
ganza have been working incredibly hard
and we are again expecting something
special. Please support the school by pur-
chasing a ticket and attending one of the
performances. There is no doubt you will
be dazzled and amazed at what our stu-
dents can do. Tickets are available at the
front office.
This year will also mark the inclusion of
performances from 3 of our partner prima-
ry schools: Hambledon PS, Quakers Hill
East PS and Quakers Hill PS.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
EXAMS AND ASSESSMENTS
Currently all year groups are involved in exams
and assessment tasks in order to assess the
progress and performance of our students.
During the week I went to the hall to assist with
the start of the exams and I was pleased to see
the students move in quickly and quietly and
complying with exam expectations.
It is important that students continue to work
hard in class at all times. All subjects will con-
tinue to provide a rigorous program of study to
continue to build skills and knowledge in prepa-
ration for progression into the next year of
study.
YEAR 10’S SEEKING EXEMP-TION AFTER THE ROSA
Now the examinations are over many students
may be seeking exemption for the remainder
of the school year. This is undoubtedly a
good time for students to seek work, to
gain further hours in existing roles and so
on. Please note some of the rules
around seeking an exemption. You must
provide: i) clearance from Mrs Maricic that N
Determinations are resolved, fees
are paid and library books returned
ii) a signed letter on official letterhead
from your employer/course provid-
er. This letter must indicate that
your employer etc. understands
there are some dates that you will
need to be at school
iii) a signed letter from a parent or
caregiver
iv) these documents to Mrs Claus / Mrs
Maricic If all documentation is in order, you will then be provided with an exemption on the understanding that you will attend school on the following dates: 2nd and 3rd November: All My Own Work. This is compulsory for ALL NSW students who are undertaking Stage 6. Any student who is absent on these days will have to complete a catch up at a later date.
5th November:
P3 – Elevate Study Skills Program for stu-dents who are continuing in further studies ($12 to be paid to the office)
P5 & 6 – Etiquette skills for those students who are attending the Formal
18th November: Wyndham Orientation Day. All students who are going to Wynd-
ham must attend in full school uniform. Failure to attend may endanger your po-sition.
3th December: Year 10 Graduation Re-hearsal at 9am. Full school uniform.
Page 4
QHHS Contact
4th December: Year 10 Graduation at 9am. Students are to arrive at 8.30 to have their name marked off. Full school uniform.
AM I ALLOWED TO GO TO
THE FORMAL? Earlier this term a non-formal list was
compiled based on student attendance,
work completion, behaviour, uniform and so
on. Approximately 70 students were placed
on this list for a variety of reasons. Identified
students were given a letter for parents to
sign and told how they could improve their
performance. Many students have since
worked their way off the list and have been
informed that they can now pay the formal
deposit. Please remember that paying the
deposit does not guarantee attendance as
subsequent misbehaviour can lead to loss
of deposit and loss of your child’s oppor-
tunity to attend.
JAMBEROO – THE BIG DAY OUT
TUESDAY 1ST
DECEMBER 2015
The annual reward excursion for selected
students who have consistently upheld the
school SMART values is on again this year.
This is an invitation only event as only 200
students may attend this excursion. The first
200 students to pay will secure a place.
Please be aware that approximately 350 stu-
dents have received an invitation and are
eligible to attend. This is a significant im-
provement on last year. Congratulations to
all the students who were issued an invita-
tion.
YEAR 8 NEWS
YEAR ASSEMBLY: At our last assembly 60
students were recognised through the posi-
tive review. These students were nominated
by their class teachers in 3 or more subjects
for improvement, being conscientious and
classwork. Congratulations to all of the
students who received awards and I en-
courage all students to continue to work
hard at all times so they too can be re-
warded.:
DIGITAL THUMBPRINT
On Tuesday 3rd November all of Year 8
will be participating in Digital Thumbprint
workshops which are run by Optus. With
our students using the internet so fre-
quently and interacting with each other
online, Digital Thumbprint will provide
them with the necessary tools to stay safe
online. The Digital Thumbprint workshops
are a fun and interactive way to teach
children the advantages of a positive
online presence whilst arming them with
the facts that they need to stay safe
online. We are sure that our students will
gain much knowledge and enjoyment
from the workshops and we thank Optus
for providing our students with this won-
derful opportunity.
VALID TEST
From Monday 9th November Year 8 stu-
dents will be sitting the VALID Test which
has replaced the ESSA online test. To
recap, VALID is the new statewide Sci-
ence assessment program that is based
on the NSW Science Years 7-10 Sylla-
bus, which mandates the teaching of Sci-
ence in contexts that assist students to
see the relevance of Science and to make
meaning of scientific knowledge, under-
standing, skills, values and attitudes.

SCIENCE MATTERS
Its Halloween tomorrow and because you
were all so busy studying for the exam, we
thought that we could help get you organ-
ised! How about making some slime? This
versatile ooey, gooey substance will be per-
fect for grossing others as your booger slime dangles from
your nose - an effective addition to your party or trick or treat-
ing costume!!!
Or why not stretch the slime to form a colourful cobweb and
use this as a decoration.
The chemical reaction between liquid starch (you can get this
from Coles or Woolworths) together with regular glue makes
a mixture that splats, sticks, oozes, flops and stretches. En-
gage in some imaginary monster-play and embrace your in-
ner scientist with this fun activity!
Halloween Liquid Starch Slime
Materials:
Clear glue, glitter glue or white glue (Elmer's washable
works best, but so does ordinary type)
Liquid Starch
Water
Measuring Cup
Page 6
QHHS Contact
2 bowls and a spoon
Food colouring
Instructions:
In one bowl mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup of glue (really mix to
combine completely).
Now's the time to add colour.
In another bowl measure out 1/2 cup of liquid starch.
Slowly mix the glue/water mixture into the starch with a spoon,
make sure to get all glue out of bowl.
Switch to mixing with hands for a few minutes until you feel it
come together.
Put in a clean, dry container or Ziploc bag
Hint: Liquid starch slime gets better with time but can be used right
away. Playing with it helps it set. After about 10 minutes, it is just right
and looks awesome. Decorate your liquid starch slime with glitter, con-
fetti or other fun things!! It keeps at least for a week.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL YEAR 8 STUDENTS:
Validation of Assessment 4 Learning & Individual Development (VALID)
Important Information for Year 8 parents/carers
The students in Year 8 will be sitting the Validation of Assessment 4 Learning & Individual De-
velopment (VALID) test between the dates Monday 9 November and Tuesday 17 November
2015. Their Science teachers have notified the students of the periods during which this inter-
active online assessment will be undertaken.
VALID Science 8 is mandatory for all Year 8 students in NSW government schools. The aim of
this assessment is to provide parents and the school with valuable information about what stu-
dents know and can do in aspects of Science. The data gathered from this test is used to im-
prove learning and teaching of Science for all students.
Students in Year 8 were given a note on VALID to take home by their science teachers, ex-
plaining the purpose for this testing, together with an indication of what aspects of science will
be tested as part of the Stage 4 syllabus. The note also included a form for consideration for
special provisions, which needs to be returned to the science teacher as soon as possible,
should this be required.
It is important that students come prepared with their own earphones/headphones on the

date that they will be sitting for the test.
For any further information or concerns on VALID, please do not hesitate to contact the school
on 9837 1533.

NEWS FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY
Most of the yearly examinations are almost
done and students are waiting for the results.
The Mathematics faculty would like to com-
mend all students who have diligently studied
and completed their examinations.
We still have six weeks to go until the end of
this school year and there are still a lot of top-
ics to cover until the end of term. These topics
are prerequisite for next year’s content.
Year 7 will be learning about perimeters of
parallelograms, trapeziums, rhombuses and
kites.
Year 8 will cover properties of geometrical figures 2 and linear relationships.
Year 9 will be learning about right-
angled trigonometry, rates and ra-
tio.
Year 10 are mostly learning about
the practical side of Mathematics
such as: credit cards, loans, blood
alcohol content, etc.
Towards the last few weeks of the
term, Years 7-9 will be learning about probability. Though the yearly exams are over, stu-
dents should bear in mind that the topics to be covered for the remaining weeks will be im-
portant for next year.
FROM THE TAS DEPARTMENT
Teachers of students in the TAS Department would like parents to be aware that while exams
might be completed, we are still completing outcomes, and classwork will continue as usual.
Classes will still be completing practical tasks and learning associated theory throughout the
term. Uniform rules such as bringing aprons and wearing correct shoes will still be strictly fol-
lowed.
We are pleased to display the following examples of student work.

ENGLISH FACULTY NEWS
This has been a very busy week for the English faculty. Year 8, 9 and 10 students have been
sitting for the English Yearly Examinations while Year 7 has completed their Literacy Numera-
cy Examinations in class. We know that the results will reflect the hard work that students have
given to their studies this semester and the excellent teaching by the staff.
In Drama the Yearly assessment task has been completed but students are now working hard
to refine their performances for the CAPA showcase, Vivacity, in week 6. The Junior Drama
Theatresports group has successfully represented Quakers Hill High in the Impro Australia
Theatresports Competition and will compete in the finals as the top performing State school
next week. Congratulations to the team- Laura Towell, Madeline Rochester, Lily Kennedy,

and Taylor Scott who were ably coached by Mr Dacey and Mr Andrews.
Following is an outstanding short story from Tobey Watkins in 8I. Tobey wrote this story in
the Year 8 Yearly Exams for English. Year 8 students had to write a short story represent-
ing the concepts of either SURVIVAL or ADVENTURE/ EXPLORATION. They had to
choose one stimulus picture or quote provided to them in the examination and then they
had 45 minutes to plan and write their story. The stimulus quotes and pictures were unseen
before the examination so students only had 45 minutes to both plan and write their re-
sponse.
Tobey’s response was impressive and an excellent example of the power of using symbol-
ism and allegory in writing.
(Allegory: figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another; a presentation of
an abstract or spiritual meaning under concrete or material forms).
Concept: SURVIVAL
Stimulus quote: A simple hello could lead to a million things.
“Hello” was all I said. That day, the day I met her, was revolutionary for me. The day I met
Hope, the day that ‘hello’ changed a million different aspects of my life.
Hope stood there, on the edge of the cliff, as if looking for a reason not to take another
step. “Hello” was all I said, and her answer was not the one I was expecting. Her answer
bewildered me for she looked around my age, she had a Class of 93, just as I had back at
my apartment. Yet her answer was that of one who had seen the start and end of events
that had happened millennia before. This was her answer.
“Have you come to crush me, like the rest of the world, child? Have you come to snuff me
out like I am the last stubborn candle on a birthday cake? Well, do not worry, child, for I am
leaving the world, letting it go on without me. I will finally rid the world of myself, Hope.”
Page 11
QHHS Contact QHHS Contact
QHHS Contact
Can you see? That is why her answer astonished me,
made me feel devoid of, well, ignore the irony, but she rid
me of hope. I told her, “I did not come to crush you, as
you say. I only wanted to know your name.”
It is then that I found out her name was Hope and I
laughed, for I had come to this cliff to try and find some
hope. I guess the universe has a twisted sense of hu-
mour, because I had found my hope.
I had to try and get her to back away from the edge, for
she had all but told me that she was going to jump. But
what she then said stopped me in my tracks. Hope said,
“You have come here looking for hope child, haven’t
you? Well you do not need her. The world has become
the machines they invent, devoid of all emotion except
for greed, lust, rage and passion. There is no need for
hope in the world’s engine.”
Hope talked as if she had been to every nook and cranny
of the world and had not found something to convince
her to stay. But it seemed like I might have done enough
when she said, “You are the only one truly seeking for
hope. You hope that I will not leave, do you not? And be-
cause of that, I would regret leaving.” Everything pointed
to her staying until Hope uttered this: “Be brave, my child,
for the world will squish the fire that is within you.”
And with that she took one step backwards and fell. I
looked over the edge, yet I could not see her. But with
goodbye, any hope I had left me. The world seemed
colder, darker and without hope.
So, after all, a simple hello could change a million things.
And it did. I saw the machine that Hope had talked about
now, saw its greed in the rich. Saw its lust in the poor
and in the crazy. I saw its rage and its passion but I did
not see the one thing I was looking for and that is when I
realised something.
This is what the world was like without Hope.

SWIM SCHOOL 2015
Swim School is on in 2015 for both Year 7 and Year 8. During this time staff and students
travel to Blacktown Pool and participate in a swim and survive program that lasts for one week
for each year group.
Year 7 is during Week 7 Term 4 (Monday 16 – Friday 20 November)
Year 8 is during Week 8 Term 4 (Monday 23 — Friday 27
November)
The program caters for all levels from non-swimmers to competent swimmers. Student are
asked to indicate their swimming ability on the permission note which has been handed out
before it is returned to the front office.
Aquatics is a compulsory component of the Year 7 PDHPE program and all students
are expected to attend. There will be NO formal lessons at school for Year 7 or 8 during
the week their year group is at swim school. The emphasis of the program is on personal
survival and rescue techniques. In a country where there are so many drownings at the beach
and in backyard pools it is of great importance that our students are confident in and around
water.
Some students say that they can swim so they don’t need to attend. This is not the case as by
attending each student will achieve a Certificate of achievement indicating the level of their
competency from RSLSA as well also learning survival and resuscitation techniques. This is
extremely important as quite often you may need to save the life of someone else. This could
be someone in your family or a complete stranger.
A couple of years ago a former student from QHHS was walking down to Stanhope
Shops when he saw a mother and father who had a young child with them who had
stopped breathing. They were in a panic, however the ex-student calmly took control of
the situation, used CPR training that he had just learnt from the swim school program
and saved the life of the young child. The ex-student received a large write up in two
local newspapers and he also received an award for bravery.
Times: Roll call as normal. Students will then be transported to the pool by bus. Students
will return to school by 3:00pm.
Cost: $60 – Swim & Survive Award $65 – Bronze Star & $70 for Bronze Medallion
(Yr8’s) (approval required for both of these-see Mr Barry)
Cost includes pool entry, bus fare and awards from the Royal Lifesaving Australia.
Requirements:
School uniform is not required but students are expected to be appropriately dressed eg T-shirt, shorts and footwear.
Towel, swimmers and warm clothes (tracksuit) 30+ sunscreen, hat, additional T-shirt to wear in the pool. Some students will be required to bring and wear additional clothing into the water as
part of their award, however, their instructor will inform them accordingly.
Page 14
QHHS Contact
Other:
Students will be supervised at all times by staff however staff will not be responsible for
large sums of money or valuables.
Canteen facilities will be available during re-
cess and lunch times.
All students are required to follow the SMART
expectations of QHHS for the duration of the
Swim and Survive program. Failure to comply
may result in exclusion from the program with-
out refund.

A St Vincent De Paul Christmas Hamper Drive Message from
our 2016 Peer Support Nominees
By Holly Bramble (Year 9)
It is human nature to help those in need. So, succumb to your instincts this holiday
season and donate to the St Vincent de Paul Hamper Drive. Each year, QHHS collects
donations that go towards helping some of the struggling families living in our com-
munity, and you can be a part of that honoured tradition simply by bringing in a non-
perishable food item to the Library for inclusion in our hampers. Donations will be
collected until Week 8, so you have plenty of time to forage something yummy from
the depths of your pantry! We ask that all donated items have a ‘use by date’ that extends into February/March
2016 to ensure that the targeted families are able to make use of the items well into the New Year.
Our Week 4 targets for donations are - pasta, pasta sauces, cereal, condiments & drinks.
The 2015 QHHS 10 Book Challenge Wraps
On the 27th of November
…and the Pizza Lunch will kick off in Week 9 The 2015 QHHS 10 Book Reading Challenge will be wrapping on Friday the 27th of November in Week 8 of Term 4.
So, all participating reading enthusiasts must submit their completed Reading Logs to Ms Lachevre by Friday after-
noon to reap the benefits.
If you indicated that you would be participating this year and if the pizza lunch, awards and Letters of Commenda-
tion still appeal to your resume or your tastebuds, then drop your Reading Log off ASAP. (You may also email Ms
Lachevre a scanned copy of you log - [email protected])
The 2015 CAPA SHOWCASE – VIVACITY
Rehearsal Schedules, Permission Notes &
Media Release Forms Parents, performers and crew members are reminded that the intensely busy pre-show rehearsal period is about to
commence for our 2015 production of Vivacity. We have a busy agenda of in-school, after school and weekend re-
hearsals and anticipate that all students involved will be available for these sessions to honour the commitment they
made when joining our CAPA ensemble and to help ensure that the highest quality performance makes it to the
stage on the 10th and 11th of November.
To help keep the rehearsals fresh in your minds and to facilitate high attendance rates, we have created a Vivacity
Rehearsal Summary Sheet. A hard copy of this schedule has been distributed to students by their supervising teach-
ers, been emailed to student Portal accounts and is included within this edition of Contact for your personal refer-
ence.
Some students are still yet to return their Media Release Forms and Permission Notes. Additional copies have been
attached to this edition of Contact and have also been emailed to student Portal accounts and can be picked up from

tion, full custom artwork and colour printing.
To order your Vivacity DVD, you need to record your school, surname and child’s name on the order envelope
(which is available from the Library Front Desk) and specify the quantity of DVDs required and the funds en-
closed. Cash or cheque may be used as your preferred payment form. You are to then drop the envelope and
payment to the QHHS Front Office. If you are a primary school parent, you can deliver your envelope to your
respective PS Front Offices for collection by Ms Lachevre by the 13th of November (Collection Date #2).
The pre-order price of $25 will finish on Friday November the 13th, as all orders will be forwarded to School
Memories Captured on this date. Orders placed after the 13th of November will have to be delivered directly to
the QHHS Front Office for processing, with DVDs costing $35. We will continue to accept late orders until Decem-
ber the 4th.
You may also place your order on one of the performance evenings, on the 10th and 11th of November. We ad-
vise you to supply the correct funds at the time of payment, as no change will be given. The order form/
envelopes will be delivered to the film company untampered.
I anticipate that the DVDs will be ready for distribution in mid-December and will deliver your purchase(s) to
your respective primary school after this point. Quakers Hill High School students will be called during Roll Call to
collect the DVDs when they are finalised.
So don’t delay. Once you’ve seen it on stage, you will want to re-live the theatricality of it all.

EMAIL ADDRESS REQUEST
Greetings Parents and Carers
I am sure that you would agree that effective communication between the school and home is important. One means of communication is the school newsletter ‘Contact’.
We have been concerned for some time that our Contact newsletter is not as effective in communicating as we would wish. It often does not reach home, lost without trace at the bottom of a school bag and sometimes our teenagers actively prevent the school communicating with you as parents and carers.
On top of this is the notion that a paper newsletter is expensive (over $5000 every year) and given the increasing number of parents who use email and actually prefer it, we really need to get with the times and communicate with parents electronically. Of course, a paper version would still be available for those who require it.
Be assured that we are not aiming to overflow your IN tray with school emails.
We would like to start sending out newsletters by email thus ensuring that they reach the desired desti-nation and saving money which would be better spent on resources for your children.
Please carefully and legibly complete the following and return it to school with your child.
Lauretta Claus
