ADVERTORIAL

Save $30 off our already low trade price until the end of June 2014.

Mention the Renovating Magazine and you’ll get a 15 litre Aquathane-XR pail for just $129.50.

You won’t see our product once tiling has been com-pleted, you won’t think about it, in fact you’ll forget that it’s even there, but that’s fine because you won’t be worrying about water leaks from your balcony or bathroom destroy-ing your new carpet.

Choosing the right waterproofing membrane for a job, whether it be for a simple bathroom renovation or a new building construction is one of the most important deci-sions that you’ll have to make. The wrong choice of product can lead to serious water damage costing you tens of thou-sands of dollars in rectification work, so it is vital that you choose a high quality product suitable for the task at hand.

Aquathane-XR® as supplied by The WaterStop Shop® is a quality latex rubber membrane that has been specifically formulated to be an easy to use product suitable for a wide range of waterproofing applications. It has been CSIRO tested and found to be highly elastic (approximately 700%) which will accom-modate any normal building movement. Being environmentally friendly makes it suitable for almost any indoor application as well as a range of outdoor applications.

Importantly Aquathane-XR® is highly resistant to heat making it ideal for Australian balconies where many waterproof membranes eventually fail due to excessive heat stress.

Tiling on this membrane is as easy as picking up a good quality tile adhesive that is generally suitable for use on waterproof membranes.

Aquathane-XR® has been successfully used in thou-sands of wet areas around Australia, including bathrooms, showers, balconies, decks and basement walls and carries a fifteen (15) year manufacturer’s warranty.

Renovating or Building? Think Waterproofing!

Height-adjustable kitchen benchtops When younger and older disabled or

frail people cannot use kitchen facilities because of height or reach problems, the trend these days is to redesign the facilities around the person rather than require the person to adapt to the facili-ties. Accordingly, Enware now offers an expanded range of Danish-designed Pressalit Care manual- or electric-driven lifts for kitchen benchtops and wall cup-boards. In the height-adjustable working environment standing and seated users, including wheelchair users, can work comfortably and safely.

The height-adjustable lifting units help create a safe and ergonomically correct working environment in small as well as large areas, ranging from kitchens in private homes to facilities in shared residential, workplace and care environ-ments. Worktops can be adjusted vertically 300mm; wall cupboards can be moved diagonally, both vertically and forwards; and from its highest position, the cupboard can be moved 430mm downwards and 180mm forwards. The latest lifters for free-standing surfaces – adjustable over 300mm and supporting lengths up to 3000mm – can be used in rooms where walls may not be strong enough to support wall mounted lifters.

These clever lifts, stylishly contained within telescopic legs and behind cup-board fittings, enable people of different stature and physical capabilities to adjust the height of worktops and cupboards, so they can carry out as many functions as possible without assistance, whether standing or seated. The modular lifts can be incorporated into a virtually limitless range of standard and custom-fabricated cupboards and worktops, permitting professional and private users to combine them with the furniture of their choice, taste and professional requirements. The lifts can comply with both OHS and personal needs without needing to have any institutional feel at all.

Renovating ideas for small bathroomsThe average bathroom measures

less than 8m2. While this may often pose a challenge for renovators, Kaldewei’s ranges of baths, shower-trays and floor-level shower-sur-faces made of high-quality 3.5mm steel enamel are available in many different sizes making bathroom design easier than expected.

With Xetis, the enamelled shower surface with a waste elegantly hid-den in the wall behind a designer cover, Kaldewei offers state-of-the-art design – even for the small bathroom. Installed absolutely flush-to-floor, the shower surface is available in 13 different sizes to integrate neatly with various layouts. Blending seamlessly with the bathroom floor this shower-surface opens up the room to provide greater freedom of movement. And it can leave space for a separate bath, such as the Puro Duo.

The Cayono bath and the floor-level shower-surface Superplan Plus from Kaldewei similarly optimise comfort in small spaces. As a key characteristic, Superplan Plus has a waste with a round enamelled cover in the same colour as the tray that sits flush with the shower surface to provide maximum safety underfoot. The Cayono bath model comes in five different sizes from 150 x 70cm.

Available in a wide variety of sizes from 150 x 70cm other Kaldewei bath models also meet the requirements of small bathrooms. The diversity of prod-ucts in the range allows for maximum flexibility in design. For example, Kalde-wei Duo Pool promises an entirely new bathing experience: with an unusual depth of 50.5cm and a compact length of just 1.50m it is a bath for true indul-gence catering specifically to the requirements of small bathrooms.

Copper ceiling lightsCopper is one of the oldest materials known to man. Its use has ebbed and

flowed through time, and recently it has seen resurgence in popularity featur-ing in home décor, bars and cafes. Copper has antibacterial properties and maintains a warm luxurious finish, rather than being clinical like stainless steel. The most popular way to use copper has been through its use as an ac-cent or feature piece – it looks great on a neutral white tiled or Carrara marble backdrop. These four impressive light-fittings are part of Schots range of cop-per light:

visit www.autoslide.com

The Autoslide Au-tomatic Pet Door Kit ($399+p/h) includes two wireless push buttons for human-use plus pet mats. Once Autoslide is fitted to your existing sliding door, it can be opened automatically either via the wireless push buttons or via the built-in pull-assist. Doors will automatically close after the adjustable time delay. To activate the automatic pet door function, you first position the pet mats and then set the pet-opening-width to suit the size of your pet. It’s a simple two-step-process.

There are two modes with these kits: Automatic mode; and Pet mode. In Pet mode, the door will automatically open for you and your pet. But when it’s time to stop your pets from going in-and-out, you switch back to Automatic mode to temporarily disable the pet mats [eg at night time]. With the pet door kits, one wire-less battery operated pet mat is placed on the inside of the house under a regular door mat to let your pet out; while the other wire-less mat is placed outside for your pet to come back in.

As an alternative, the pet sensors are mounted on your door frame and activates whenever your pet walks towards it. The Autoslide pet mode allows the door to open just enough for your pet to use it, thus reducing loss of heating or cooling.

Kemlan Industries specialises in fireplace design and manufacture. To this day they re-main family owned and Australian made, with all fireplaces still manufactured in their Brisbane factory. Their 2014 range includes freestanding, inbuilt and wall recessed models.

The Coupe Series is available as freestanding [from $4095], inbuilt [from $3945] or wall pen-etration [from $4750, and is the most environ-ment-friendly heater in their range. The Coupe burns safely behind two large Schott ceramic glass viewing areas, with the ceramic glass kept clean through-out the life of the fire by an advanced air-wash system. The fully shielded firebox incorporates a two-way natural convection system, allowing warmth to be evenly distributed between two rooms. An optional two-speed fan is available to increase circulation.

Alternatively, the XL Freestanding [from $2800] provides a peak output of 21.6kw and average high burn output of 14.6kw. It has a large viewing area that remains clean throughout the length of the fire, and a large firebox con-structed from 6mm and 8mm steel.

Or the Convectaire is available as a single [from $5655] or double-sided [from $7705]. Its strong, ceramic glass bi-fold is an added fea-ture that allows you flexibility. You can leave the doors open to enjoy the romance of an

open fire; or closed so the fire can be left unattended. Either way the heat exchange system will give you steady, natural heat. The Kemlan system is cost effective to install as it requires only simple brick-work.

Epsom hire Australia, established in 1973, are the Temporary Power Supply specialists in Victoria. They provide a single or three phase connection to an overhead or under-ground supply, with a two day turn around for installation of a power pole; after which it is generally three weeks before the power company will connect the temporary power supply. So best to plan ahead.

Their Portable Builders’ Toilets are ideal for renovating projects, whether you are updat-ing the bathroom or doing a complete home-renovation. During a monthly hire period they will pump-out and clean the toilet as part of the hire-fee with quality anti-bacterial disinfectant, ensure the fresh water flush system is full, and re-plenish the two toilet rolls as supplied.

If you want to minimise traffic through your house at your next party their Party Toilets or Weekend-Hire Toilets look great at any event or function. They come with hand soap, paper towels and toilet paper; and can be provided with a night-light for a small extra cost. These toilets are delivered on the Friday and collected on the Monday; plus for long weekends. Pickup and delivery fees are included in the price; there are no extra costs involved.

New take on kitchen islands by Caesarstone

Caesarstone has unveiled their Islands at Fuori Salone 2014, Milan [8-13 April], in collaboration with London-based design studio Raw Edges. Fol-lowing a preview at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, Caesarstone has presented a further exploration of Islands with an interactive installation focusing on the domestic kitchen. Islands exhibit the design, beauty, quality and functionality of Caesarstone surfaces and reflect the signature creativity of Raw Edges’ work.

Islands seek to reshape the typical interior arrangement by positioning the surface as the binding element of its design. Cabinetry and appliances are slotted into purpose-built voids within the Caesarstone surface itself instead of being placed atop or around it, thus highlighting the monolith’s value and functionality within a kitchen.

Updated gas log heatersCannon has updated their gas log heater collection for the 2014 season. Designed and

manufactured in Australia they provide: rapid warmth; the enchantment and romance of a log fire without any mess; simple operation; plus high-energy efficiency and heat output. Their flexible flue system means there’s a Cannon Gas Log Heater installation option for almost every possible scenario. These heaters have a heating capacity of up to 80m2; with prices starting at $3,199.

The Canterbury Classic range is available as either a Freestanding or Inbuilt unit. The Freestanding model can be powered by either LP or Natural Gas, both of which have a standard flue, an enhanced flame, double glass front and black finish. There are six varia-tions in the range.

The Fitzroy Profile is an Inbuilt range with a dual glass fascia as a standard inclusion and either a standard flue or Powerflue. There are four standard flue models that have a non-enhanced flame and feature: electronic controls; a choice of finish in black or platinum metallic; and powered by either LP or Natural Gas. There are also four Powerflue models that are differentiated by their enhanced flame and also feature: electronic controls; a choice of black or platinum metallic finish; and the option of LP or Natural Gas.

The Powerflue models offer installation flexibility. They can be installed on any wall and vented horizontally from the back or side, vertically under the floor or through the roof; even in a multi-storey apartment they can be flued up through an internal wall or out un-der the floor.

Induction cooktopsBosch has released their intel-

ligent new combination induction cookers in 60cm [PIT651F17E, $2099] and 80cm [PIT851F17E, $2499] models. These Combi-Induction cooktops feature two traditional round zones and two bridgeable zones with cross-elec-tromagnetic coils. These are for cooking with large pots and pans, including roasting trays and teppanyaki plates. The cross-electro-magnetic coils also ensure precise detection of the cooking utensils used. Depending on the size and shape of the pot or pan, either one coil or two coils can be activated for convenient cooking.

The CombiZone function allows you to combine two smaller cooking zones into a single, large cooking area at the touch of a button; while MoveMode allows for a transition between fast boiling on the front-zone and simmering on the rear with a simple slide of the pot; and PowerBoost rapidly increases temperature levels. Inte-grating with modern kitchen-design, these frameless cooktops are sleek and contemporary in design with bevelled front and side edges.

Traditional wood heatersJarrahdale has been manufacturing a range

of traditional wood heaters for over 30 years. The Swagman is the baby. Its affordability at $1280 is flue-inclusive. While compact in design, the Swagman has a large Schott glass viewing panel, and is suitable for an average-sized, three bedroom home as it heats up to 150m2. It is available on a pedestal or legs.

Alternatively, Jarrahdale’s fan-forced Convec-tor will provide warmth to larger homes for $2040. Its large open door design allows for logs up to 580mm; and it comes with a two-speed fan for heat distribution of up to 230m2.

But their jumbo Innovator is a deluxe con-vection fireplace with the capacity to heat a spacious 280m2. It features an optional two-speed fan to spread the heat through the house more quickly; and its versatile designed firebox not only accommodates larger logs but has a clever back-sloping design that reduces fall-out of ash and embers when the door is opened. Priced from $2365.

An alternative to the heater

As an alternative to turning-on the gas or electric heater is there anything more comfortable than embracing yourself in a gor-geous throw while relaxing in the sanctuary of your bedroom or catching-up with the news on the lounge at the end of the day? Tracie Ellis has introduced her 2014 collection of AURA throws in four colours [jade, mint, charcoal and black] and various patterns to match many décors, sized 130 x 180cm and priced from $129 through to $179.

Heating outdoor-loungesExtending the comfort of a

home into the outdoors-areas is a now a firm renovating-trend. Outdoors-lounges, -kitchens and -entertainment areas are being enhanced with outdoor-fireplaces to extend the use of these home-facilities into the colder months. Nothing beats the crackle and spark of an open fireplace on a winter’s night, especially if you are out in the elements. But it’s no longer costly and inefficient to run one. Heatmaster offers their A Series Wood Fire units as a viable option. Improving on the less efficient traditional brick fireplace, these units [whether installed indoors or outdoors] still offer the charm and nostalgia of an open fire [including the use of real wood] but offer around eight-times greater efficiency. The unit itself is an open steel firebox, designed with various features to suit both period and contemporary settings, and can be either built-into an existing brick fireplace or into a timber or plaster frame. Or you can install one outdoors. Prices start at $2765.

Height-adjustable bathroom basins

Washing hands, shaving, or any task involv-ing a basin may appear to be simple for many - but when the height of the basin restricts a person’s ability to use it, then the job can be difficult. This is particularly the case for disa-bled people and wheelchair-users, for which the height of a washbasin is sometimes not user-friendly and difficult. Accordingly, Care-design [Enware Australia] offers an innovative height adjustable wash basin to make its use easier for a person of any height or disability.

This durable, height-adjustable basin package allows for frequent adjustments with minimal effort. Its bracket employs a counterbalanced method of adjustment, operated via a simple hand control lever. The basins can be powered by electric motor, gas cylinder or manoeuvred manually and have been used in locations including hospitals, residential facilities and private homes where others besides people with disabilities use the bathroom.

Designer bathroomware for the aged

With today’s demographic change comes an in-creased need for products that facilitate independent, self-sufficient living even at old age while simultane-ously meeting the demands of modern design. Floor-level shower surfaces, invisible anti-slip finishes and comfortable baths are some of the standards of a modern bathroom. The progressive change in de-mographics brings with it a shift in individual needs for the bathroom. People want to feel comfortable whatever their circumstance, and be able to cope on their own – without bathrooms that suggest old age. To retain comfort and usability of the bathroom over time, yet also satisfy the desire for a modern design, it is advisable to plan individually and start early, choosing your products wisely.

Large-format, floor-level shower surfaces such as Kaldewei models Conoflat and Xetis are easy to access and designed with aesthetic appeal. Thanks to the stability of Kaldewei’s 3.5mm steel enamel they are also suitable for wheelchair users. Additional safety underfoot is facilitated by virtually-invisible surface-finishes such as Kaldewei’s Secure Plus.

The Asymmetric Duo from Kaldewei presents itself as an obvious choice of bath. Its wide rim on one side is convenient for storage, but also serves as a comfortable seat to aid getting into and out of the bath. Kaldewei’s bath-grips equally satisfy the highest standards of aesthetics and functionality. Matched to the bath design, they provide additional support and ensure a greater level of safety for relaxed immersion or sitting up in the bath. A refreshing and enjoyable bath or shower experience in the future, therefore, is not a question of age, but rather of the right product.

Energy-saving LEDs for bathroom lightingTastic® Neo three-in-one bathroom units[ IXL Sampford] are now supplied with three

7w LED lights as the new standard; and owners of existing Tastic® Neo’s can retrofit the LEDs to replace their Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs to achieve the performance ben-efits of the LEDs. This can be done either immediately or when the CFLs expire. LEDs use 30-50% less energy than a comparable CFL and 80-90% less energy than a comparable Halogen lamp; and have an estimated 25,000-30,000 hours lifespan. Tastic® Neo LED lights retail for $24.90 each and are available from hardware, lighting and electrical retail-ers nationally.

The IXL Tastic® Neo energy-saving LED globe has been specifically developed to fit the Tastic ® Neo, and is fully sealed to prevent moisture from potentially damaging lamp elec-tronics. There’s no time lost with LEDs, which provide immediate full brightness, without any flickering lights or warm-up period sometimes experienced with CFLs and Halogens. LED lights therefore do away with any need to use the heat lamps as a light source – an-other energy saving feature.

Coordinated colours for bathroomware

For environment-conscious builders and renovators the Coordi-nated Colours Collection from Kaldewei offers colours for the bath-room that are both ecological and close to nature. The twelve matt colours, including Woodberry Brown matt, Lava Black matt and Seashell Cream matt, integrate smoothly with the bathroom design or create an effective contrast in almost any bathroom architec-ture. In order to satisfy the desire for a better quality of life in the bathroom, many renovators are opting for high-quality products that match the overall value and quality of the property and pay off in the long run. With steel and enamel Kaldewei uses only natural materials that can be fully recycled at the end of their life.

Chemical Developments Pty. Ltd. (Port Stephens, NSW) in 1996 developed a build-ing material that looks, feels and wears exactly like natural stone, yet comes in liquid form, right from a can.

Megatreat Liquid Stone is a revolution-ary high-quality building material that has all the qualities of natural stone because it’s made with natural stone. Megatreat is a flexible material that will not crack, is super economical, easy to use on any type of horizontal or vertical surface, and can be tinted or textured to a wide range of finishes.

The high-grade natural sandstone, terracotta and limestone have a unique combination of stone aggregates and an acrylic-based crosslink polymer. It has been designed for both interior and exterior applications, for vertical and horizontal surfaces, in residential as well as commercial properties.

Cover that surface to give a cement rendered look.

Right from the can, with no mixing or measuring, Megatreat can be spread, brushed, bagged, trowelled or sprayed onto almost any surface. For example; peb-blecrete, concrete, slate, tiles, brick, wood, plastic, steel, wrought iron, glass, asphalt, fibro, blue board, hardiflex and laminates. For example: walkways, wall, roofs, floors, bench tops, pots, pool surrounds, patios, driveways, ceramics, even styro-foam planters.

These products can be coloured using a non-organic pigment or paint tint from your local paint store. These should be stirred in slowly to achieve the best effect. After application, simple finishing tech-niques can be used to create a wide range of natural stone and masonry results. It can be used in place of wallpaper, paint or panelling. Megatreat can be applied to achieve an effect that looks and feels like real stone.

There are four types of Megatreat Liquid Stone products:-

Liquid Sandstone: 3 natural colours - Natural, Sydney White and Desert Gold. Also the stock Tinted Charcoal Grey

Liquid Terracotta: Real TerracottaLiquid Limestone:White and stock

tinted Concrete GreyTextured Primer Coat: White and Tint-

able (filler for pebblecrete, rough surfaces and/or joint colour.

Megatreat Natural, Satin or Gloss Sealers, are applied once the Liquid Stone is dry (around 24 hours after application). These tried and proven range of sealers are easily applied, wash up in water and have no of-fensive smells. A slip resistant additive can be mixed in to the Satin and Gloss sealers for pool surrounds, shop floors and bath-rooms. The long lasting sealers give up to 5 years protection.

All of these products have been thor-oughly tested by C.S.I.R.O. in Australia and Marshall Laboratories in the U.S.A. They passed all tests for flexibility, strength, fire resistance, ultra-violet light, crack resistant and mould resistant. These products are environmentally friendly, and wash up in water. Because of its advanced polymer base Megatreat products can flex with vari-ations of temperature and moisture.

Features and Benefits Summary:

The Hitec Shower Pack comes complete with Copyright instructions to seal that leaking shower yourself. You also have access to the inventor and manufacturer of the Hitec Product for technical or trade re-lated training and sales. The Hitec Shower Pack retails for around $50 but if it is una-vailable in your area it can be purchased direct from the manufacturer for $49.95 inc P&H. The product is also available from Masters Home Improvements and selected tile stores.

Pre-mixed cornice cementFor the convenient installation or repair of cornice,

CSR Gyprock has released a Pre-mixed Cornice Ce-ment [$21.95]. The ‘wet’ formula means there’s no mixing of water and powder, allowing you to skip the messy part and get on with the renovation-job. The pre-mixed formula is as strong as regular plaster based cornice cement and ready to use straight out of the bucket. And there is a resealable lid, so the remainder of the mix can be saved and reused at a later date.

Instructions on the bucket can be followed to install cornice in three easy steps:

After selecting and cutting your cornice to size apply Gyprock Pre-Mixed Cornice Cement generously along the top and bottom edges and to the mitres. Each section should be but-tered and fixed separately.

Remove any surplus cement with a cornice tool and clean over the area with a brush or sponge.

Fix the cornice to the ceiling and hold in place with temporary nails, allowing the cornice to dry for at least 16 hours before removing the nails.

18V cordless drill

The new QUAD-RIVE DRC 18 compact cordless drill from Festool offers an impres-sive combination of fastening power and drilling preci-sion in both wood and metal. The battery-powered QUADRIVE is equipped with a 4-speed gear unit: maximum 60 Nm torque in 1st gear and a top speed of 3,800 rpm. High speeds are a decisive factor for rapid drilling progress and precision. This drill comes with an 18 V 4.2AH battery that can drive the thickest of screws powerfully into wood in first gear without the need for a pre-drilled hole. It can insert ten 300mm screws with ease. The intelligent FastFix system allows you to change five different attachments with a single click and without using tools. The drill can be converted to an angle screwdriver, angle drill, and drill with depth stop in seconds. Characterised by a low weight of between 1.6 and 2.3kg, this machine from the QUADRIVE series is easy to hold. Four LEDs provide maximum illumination in dark situations. You can also check the charging status of the QUADRIVE at the touch of a button.

French antique-brass door handles

Memory Lane of Ascot Vale, Melbourne, has added a traditional French-Provincial style handle to its impressive range of door handles. With so many Australians travelling to France in recent years, and to pro-vincial areas in particular, it’s only natural that the French-Provincial style of decorating has crept into everyday decorating downunder. Many of the handles that are brought into Australia from France are beautiful yet expensive. But the Reims, in a lovely warm antique-brass colour is a good quality handle at a reasonable price. The handle pictured has a back plate that is 240mm x 40mm; also comes in a smaller 110mm x 40mm offering; and can be ordered with a Euro-key cut-out, a mortise-key cut-out, or a privacy-snib to suit all types of doors. As well as the lovely antique brass finish the handles also come in a bright chrome finish for those wanting a modern interpre-tation of French-Provincial style.

Pulling out exposed headed nails

Excalibur Tools’ Extractor Nail Pliers were born out of the need to reuse and recycle trim and mouldings in the restoration and renovation of old historic homes. With one single easy motion, Excalibur Extractor Nail Pliers are an easy and fast way to pull out exposed headed or smoothed-body nails, carpet nails, tacks, sta-ples, rusty or damaged fasteners and pneumatic fasteners. These patented nail pliers are simple but effective and feature parallel auto-locking jaws with serrated teeth and a large curved heel, which dramatically reduces any damage to the surface. By gripping on the exposed end they grab so effectively that they can be used to pull fasteners through trims and mouldings in restoration work and remodelling. Exposed nails can be pulled through formwork so that it can be re-used. The harder the pull on the long non-slip cushion grip handles, the tighter the grip. There is no more snap-ping or shearing often experienced with the use of traditional front-end nippers, claw hammers and other grippers. They are ideal for the removal of tacks from carpet edging strips during carpet replacement. Excalibur Extractor Nail Pliers are made in Taiwan to the exacting standards and requirements of Excalibur Tools Pty limited, an Australian firm. Available through most hardware and tool stores.

Heavy duty grinderFestool’s 130mm Diamond Grinder RG 130 E is the large surface area specialist. With

a comprehensive range of compatible grinding discs available, the versatile and powerful (1600W) RG 130 is ideal for a range of applications: concrete and hard coatings; grind-ing extremely hard concrete; removing epoxy resins; and roughening smooth surfaces on ceramic tiles. With the clever folding segment (no tools required to fold) you can work right up to edges, while protecting the walls from damage. The adjustable depth guard lets you remove the right amount of material quickly and accurately for a superior surface finish; and the digital electronics provide ideal protection and control. Smooth start up guarantees a gentle increase in speed, and continuous temperature monitoring protects against over-load damage. The handle position can be adapted tool free or folded back completely to reach under pipes and in tight areas.

The innovative spiral extraction attachment provides excellent dust extraction results when the RG 130 is paired with Festool Dust Extraction. The preferred match is the new CT 36 Auto Clean Heavy Duty Dust Extractor, designed specifically for the removal of concrete dust. This new specialist extractor will help you achieve excellent extraction results to pro-vide a dust-free work environment. Effective dust extraction also ensures you have a clear view of your work for greater safety and higher quality surface finishes.

Innovative tap systemMany people put up with dripping/leak-

ing taps. It can develop into mould and mildew, and can possibly rot the structure of your home. But there is an innovative solution to fixing leaks and preventing the problems caused by leaks. The Reno Trans-former from Quoss is a patented single mixer system that can be effortlessly, and cost-effectively, retro-fitted in just a few minutes to upgrade your bathroom, kitchen and laundry plumbing systems without breaking walls and tiles or other construc-tion hassles.

It provides a permanent fix even for damaged in-wall recessed pipes, and is maintenance-free, as you don’t have to replace spindle washers in the future. It enables you to convert a two-handled shower into a single flick-mixer in as little as 10-minutes. It has an in-built flexible shower-hose for washing the kids, and you can shower with one turn of the mixer at a preset temperature with the thermo-range, thus avoiding the start-up shock (or waste) from cold water first filling the shower.

If you have a 3-hole vanity- or kitchen-tap there is a version that transforms all of that into a single-mixer, with their innova-tive connection fitting through the small middle-hole. It’s ideal for replacing dam-aged bathtub and vanity taps also spoiled with rust stains. It can provide an instant upgrade to a bathroom at a small cost, especially relevant at the time of selling a property. And if renting-out a property it can free you from future plumbing problems related to leaking showers and taps. And if renting, you can install one of these transformers and revert back to the old plumbing, taking the transformer with you, whenever you move on. It is a drill-free and interchangeable system. It’s available from plumbing outlets (Reece, Tradelink, etc) and hardware stores (Bunnings, Mitre 10, etc).

SHandi HomeHandi HomeMaintaining timber decks

Cabot’s Deck Hand, deck-maintenance bucket, is per-fect for DIYers who are look-ing for a hassle-free solution to refresh the deck. It has been specifically created to accommodate decking clean-ers, finishes and applicators. Ensuring the process is ef-fortless from start to finish, the innovative Deck Hand includes special features specific to the two main steps of achieving a deck refresh: deck preparation; and coating.

Deck preparation is often a difficult task, with most household buckets incapable of fitting broom heads. The Deck Hand addresses this with its wider surface area suitable for broom heads and its 15L capacity. Before you start coating the deck, simply flip up the drainage tray. Holding 10L of Cabot’s Aquadeck without submerg-ing the drainage tray, the Deck Hand ensures no more messy shal-low paint trays are needed. The drainage tray allows you to pad off excess decking oil from applicators whilst guaranteeing that no decking oil is wasted, with the excess draining back into the res-ervoir. The Deck Hand also has a place to rest your dry brush, wet brush and can opener; and includes applicator pole support, which enables you to rest your tools without the bucket tipping.

Another component of this multi-use bucket is the flip-up drain-age tray, which can be flipped-down when undertaking deck prepa-ration, then flipped-up in the coating phase. In addition, the Deck Hand includes a spout, ensuring leftover product isn’t wasted when pouring it back into the can; and handles on the side for a superior grip. The high sides of the bucket also prevent splashing, keeping any mess under control.

Tool transportation and storage

Festool has extended its transpor-tation and storage system to include two new products: the SYS-MFT Systainer – the mobile workbench in Systainer format; and the SYS-Storage Box SYS-SB – the box with a system.

Situations often arise where there is no workbench to provide support during building- and renovating-tasks. Buckets or crates are often used as [unsatisfactory] temporary solutions. The new SYS-MFT is a pro-fessional workbench in mini format that includes: a hard-wearing MDF insert; a series of holes for securing workpieces with clamps; a non-slip rubber insert; and an integral V-groove for reworking round items safely and accurately. It’s one of the smallest professional workbenches around.

Designed as a fold-out toolbox, the new SYS-Storage Box is just as small, practical and clever. With individual removable containers it can be configured individually to provide the perfect overview. Both the SYS-MFT and the SYS-Storage Box can be connected to any Systainer.

Maintaining outdoor furniture with spray packs

Ensuring your outdoor furniture is in tip top shape has been made easier with the ready-to-use spray packs from Cabot’s, comprising Cabot’s Garden Furniture Prep and Cabot’s Garden Furniture Oil. Pre-mixed and ready to go, the Garden Furniture Prep 500ml trigger spray pack cleans timber furniture without the mess and hassle of diluting cleaner con-centrates. It is an oxalic acid timber cleaner so you simply spray on, scrub and wash off. Cabot’s Garden Furniture Prep can remove tannins and oil from new timber and remove dirt and grime from weathered timber, ensur-ing the perfect base before the coating phase.

The Garden Furniture Oil 500ml trigger spray pack is the same trusted Cabot’s Gar-den Furniture Oil formula but in a convenient spray pack, so it’s easier to coat hard-to-reach areas. Being water-based it is fast-drying and has a low odour. For an even finish, simply spray on and lightly back brush over the timber. The 500ml spray bottles are based of refurbishing a 3-piece setting, with the Garden Furniture Oil accounting for two coats.

ADVERTORIAL

Stormtech, the Australian inventor of linear drainage systems, has just passed GreenTag™ certification across its entire Slimline series. A first for architectural grates and drains, this de-velopment will be welcomed by architects and specifiers seeking wet area solutions for green building projects. The use of certified products is increasing dramatically in both consumer and commercial sectors. A recent report shows that eco-labelled products in the consumer sector are growing at 41% compared to 2% in the base market. Recognised eco-labels like GreenTag™ are business-critical in many sectors where Green Star certification is relevant. It is also business-critical for projects that are looking to undertake a Life Cycle Analysis such as Lend Lease’s Barangaroo and projects using the new Green Star LCA and Environmental Prod-uct Declarations Innovation Challenges credits.

Globally, Stormtech obtained Gold LCARate and Level A GreenRate GreenTag™ certification across every product line. The GreenTag™ certification is a third party, green building rating and certification system, underpinned by rigorous scientific and Life Cycle Assessment pro-cesses. Stormtech decided to obtain the certification to assist specifiers and home-renovators/builders to source an architectural drainage system for its environmental credentials. It also assists green design and procurement professionals and companies requiring certified prod-ucts for projects involved in the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star rating system. Stormtech knows that building companies are increasingly pursuing Green Star certification for their projects in health, retail, multi-unit residential, industrial or public buildings.

As an Australian design and manufacturing business, Stormtech is also committed to sup-porting sustainable plumbing design and construction to reduce the damage a plumbing system can cause to the biosphere.

Guide for selecting paversPavers can offer a practical and dura-

ble solution for refreshing outdoor areas. Boral accordingly offers some tips to help you combine practicality and design to achieve your preferred look. First establish a clear idea of your garden’s intended overall look, as paving can form the foun-dation of a landscape-theme. This can vary greatly from a beach-inspired design to a contemporary Euro-feel. Next, consider the practical requirements of the space. For example, poolside pavers should be salt-resistant and non-slip; while driveway pavers must be able to withstand weight and heavy traffic. When selecting a colour, always look at pavers outside in the natural light. Choose pavers that are a similar colour to your internal floors to provide consistency from indoors through to the garden. To open up small spaces, select neutral coloured, large pavers. Laying pavers in a stretcher bond pattern across the width of a path will make it appear more substantial. Measure the area to be paved and work out how many pavers will be required. Boral has a handy calculator to help with this, which can be ac-cessed at www.boral.com.au/pavingcalc. A retailer or landscaper can also advise on quantity. Maintenance should be considered, as some pavers will require resealing approximately every two years, depending on the area.

Boral offers a number of guides to assist with choosing and installing pavers, including the latest Your Landscaping Guide. Boral pavers are available in a variety of sizes, colours and textures to suit any style of home and garden. They are suitable for patios, paths, steps and some can be used for driveways. The Boral web-site provides information on pavers available in each state.

Clothes dryers without that moisture problem

The Smeg SACD8 8kg clothes dryer is a condenser dryer, which means there is no hot, moist air being expelled from the dryer into the laundry. A condenser dryer uses a heat exchange to cool the air and extract the water vapour before returning the air to the clothes drum to collect more water vapour and continue the process. Therefore there is no need for ducting or ventilation in the laun-dry area. There are 20 programs that have been designed to suit every type of fabric from the most delicate silks and synthetics to woollens, denims, cottons and sports gear; plus an integrated sen-sor that will turn the dryer off when the required amount of dry-ness has been reached. You can choose from iron-, cupboard-, or extra-dry. There is also a choice of four different spin speeds – 600, 800, 1000 and 1200rpm – plus reverse drum action which reduces creasing in the load. Drying temperatures range from 5°C to 35°C so there is less risk of shrinkage or damage to delicate fabrics.

It also has a one to 24 hour delay-start timer so that you can set the dryer to operate at night to take advantage of off-peak power. Other features include an internal light and the convenient plumb-ing of the water tank to negate the need for manual emptying. The Smeg SACD8 clothes dryer [$1590] takes a maximum 8kg of laun-dry; while the slightly smaller SACD7 model [$1390] takes up to 7kg. Kits are available so that both dryers can be stacked with the Smeg front load clothes washers.

Stabilising grass & gravel surfaces

The SurePave™ grass and gravel stabilising paver-system offers excellent ground reinforcement by creating a surface made up by an open-cell structure that can be used with either grass or gravel. Features and benefits include: stabilises paths, driveways and slop-ing terrain; strong enough to handle heavy, turning traffic; im-proves drainage; reduces dust; and surfaces are free draining thus eliminating potholes and ponding.

They are able to withstand 700 tonnes/m² when filled and may be used for: patios; car parks (grass or gravel); tree root protection; bus/caravan/boat/trailer parks; forklift load-out or turning areas; air-port taxiways and helipads; cycle ways; paths/walking tracks (grass or gravel); emergency access roads (grass or gravel); wheel chair paths; golf paths; driveways; overflow parking; and farm gateways and tracks. Available from Bunnings stores throughout NSW and Victoria.

Online flooring design guide

Flooring specialist, Quick Step, has developed a new-generation, online visualisa-tion tool called Find Your Dream Floor, at www.quick-step.com.au/FindFloor that can be accessed by all smart phones and tablets. The choice of a new floor has an overall impact on any interior design project. It is not just a floor, but one of the most dominant colour surfaces in the room. The floor sets the scene for the entire room.

One of the initial choices most people need to make is whether to go for laminate, bamboo, engineered wood or vinyl. Although these floor types are similar in appearance, they are all quite different. The Quick-Step website guides you through the benefits of each product. Next, you select the type of room you are looking to decorate or renovate, or you upload a photo of your own room. Model the room by painting the walls and see for yourself which Quick-Step floor is the best for your interior.

Quick-Step’s clever interior design tool guides you step by step in helping you select a matching Quick-Step floor with lots of tips and information accessible via the menus for type, colour, size, joint, etc.

Traditional floor finishes with modern technology

With its milky white appearance, Feast Watson Liming White Floor Finish is ideal for introducing tranquillity into a space. It works for softer looks, such as Coastal or Hamptons trends; though with black accents it also provides an ideal base for contrasting and bold interiors. Conversely, there is nothing soft about the daring Feast Watson Black Japan Floor Finish, which allows you to achieve a dark, exotic timber finish. The Black Japan Floor Finish and Lim-ing White Floor Finish both have a three coat system, allowing you to choose the intensity of the colour. These reformu-lated products by Feast Watson create a beautiful finish while still allowing the natural grain of timber to shine through.

FEAST WATSON BLACK JAPAN FLOOR FINISH is an oil-based interior floor fin-ish which combines a traditional Black Japan stain with clear polyurethane for a one-step Black Japan look on interior tim-ber- and parquetry-floors. But with three coats of Black Japan Floor Finish there is no need for a clear coat.

FEAST WATSON LIMING WHITE FLOOR FINISH combines a traditional lime stain with clear polyurethane for a one-step soft milky white colour for interior timber floors. As the formula is water based, Liming White Floor Finish will not yellow over time and you can complete your project in a single day. Ap-ply one coat for a subtle pale colour; or multiple coats to build the opacity and whiteness. But a clear top coat is not required after three coats of Liming White Floor Finish.

Saws for cutting concrete floors with accuracy

Makinex has released three new petrol and electric Floor Saws that allow a greater cut depth. These saws are for concrete cutting at depths of up to 153mm [6 inches] using a 14- or 16-inch blade with-out needing to reconfigure the pulley-system. The FS-130SP Elec-tric 14-inch, FS-150P Petrol 16-inch and FS-150ETP Electric 16-inch Floor Saws are ideal for cutting concrete slabs, crack chasing, roads and footpaths with improved precision as the clever flush-cutting angle allows greater depths with less physical force; while the pneumatic shock absorber adjusts the cut depth to suit the applica-tion. These floor saws also improve accessibility in hard-to-reach places as they have an adjustable rear axle enabling the blade to cut flush against walls and curbs. Other features include: a depth indicator for accurate cut depth; guided sight for straighter cutting; and adjustable handle bar height for ergonomic operation.

Heat-pump clothes dryerThe once energy-hungry clothes

dryer has been reinvented, using half the energy of earlier models. Smeg has recently launched a heat pump dryer with a capacity of 7kg and 20 programs catering for cottons, denim, woollens, delicates, sportswear and shirts. The SAHP7 uses conventional heat pump technology – whereby the heat pump re-uses the hot air from within the dryer instead of expelling it like traditional vented electric-dryers. Advantages of the heat pump model are its lower energy consumption us-ing about 45% less than vented mod-els; and lack of condensation and heat emissions (which means there is no longer any need to duct the dryer).

Smeg’s new dryer has four spin speeds – 600, 800, 1000 and 1200rpm plus dry temperatures of 5 to 35°C – plus a delay start control, anti-crease cycle and reverse drum action for even drying. You can therefore tailor drying programmes to suit specific types of fabrics and dry to a particular level. A further plus with a heat pump dryer is that temperatures are not as high as conventional dryers so there is less chance of shrinkage or damage to cottons and woollens. Sensor-technology within the dryer means it will automatically stop when the clothes have reached the required level of dryness. For convenience, and in order to access the lowest electricity rates, there is also a delay-start control up to 24 hours. Features of the LCD display include a filter cleaning indicator, con-denser cleaning indicator and time-remaining count down. The Smeg SAHP7 has a six star energy rating and an optional stacking kit for use with a front loading clothes washer.

Built-in ovens from Gaggenau

Gaggenau has presented their new built-in concept that allows all appliances in the ovens 200 series to be combined and built-in flush with their surroundings. Thanks to their straight lines and pure design they blend dis-creetly into any interior. Colour variations on the 60cm wide full glass fronted appliances include Gaggenau Anthracite or Metallic. Another innovation is the control module with TFT touch display distinguished by intuitive operation. The ovens 200 series is designed to satisfy various culinary styles and preferences, and comprises ovens, combi-steam ovens, combi-microwave ovens, microwaves, fully automatic espresso machines and warming drawers. They can be built into wall cabinets, beside or over one another; or the ovens can be installed under the bench-top in any combination.

All appliances in the new series follow a consistent operation philosophy, and feature a control module with TFT touch display. The primary functions are operated by two rotary knobs and are always in view on the TFT touch display. Secondary functions can be activated over the touch fields of the display, and are indicated only as required. All functions are thus user-friendly: the core tem-perature probe, a feature in some models, ensures that meat, fish, pastries and pies are cooked to perfection; while the baking stone accessory ensures that pizza, bread and tarte flambée taste as if they had been baked in a professional brick oven.

Underfloor heating is silent, does not need to be packed away in summer, and does not stir the air (ideal for allergy sufferers). With the range of controls it is possible to select a heating schedule to fit various lifestyles.

Washing machine that automatically dispenses detergent

Bosch has upgraded their front-load washing machine by includ-ing the i-DOS HomeProfessional feature, a clever, fully integrated, automatic Intelligent Dosing Sys-tem that dispenses the precise amount of liquid detergent needed for each wash. Using too much detergent leads to increased water and energy consumption. With i-DOS sensors automatically de-tect the hardness of water, type of fabric, weight of load and level of soiling before dispensing the precise amount of detergent. A single fill of the detergent-chamber is enough for 26 perfectly dosed washes. The result is a saving of up to 7,000 litres of water per year due to reduced rinsing cycles. i-DOS HomeProfessional is designed to remove 16 of the most common stains, including coffee, make up, red wine and oil, by automatically adjusting the temperature, drum action, and soaking time before the wash program starts. Bosch model WAY32840AU is priced at $2,599. Specifications include: 8kg capacity; 5 Star WELS Water rating using 58l/wash; 14 wash programs; VarioPerfect; foam detection with additional rinse cycle; AquaSensor technology; AquaStop anti-flood protection; TFT Clear text display; time start delay; time remain indicator; and child lock.

Fire barrier foam3M Fire Protection Products [USA]

has developed 3M FIP 1-Step Firestop Foam, a breakthrough technology that is UL tested and listed and satisfies the International Building Code for passive fire protection. 3M FIP 1-Step gives contractors a state-of-the-art alternative to mineral wool, bricks and runny, inef-fective foams; and it enables fire-barrier installations to be completed up to three times faster than traditional methods. With a non-runny formula the foam stays in place and expands consistent-ly—up to five times. The foam is similar to many two-part epoxy sealants, but its one-step application means that trips up and down the ladder are reduced. As it expands it creates a seal around cables, conduit and cable trays, so complex installations can be tackled fast, with less clean-up. It can be installed in both vertical and horizontal applications without running or sagging. Contractors who have struggled with mineral wool, bricks and caulk will appreciate the simple application; and some installations can even be completed from just one side of the opening. With these ease-of-use advantages it saves time and money: the more complex the opening the greater the potential for savings.

Creating more space in your home is as easy as looking up

Many of us often visualise before and after images of our homes: before being a clut-tered disorganised home; and after a comfortable, relaxing home with extra space. The solution is as easy as looking up.

Turning your attic or roof-space into a usable space is the creative, cost effective and quicker alternative to building an extension. The Attic Group has been helping home-reno-vators transform their homes for decades and offer attic storage and room options to suit many needs. The choices are plentiful.

The Standard Attic Storage option includes a ladder and flooring and is ideal for those looking for a basic solution and easy-to-access storage area. The Dust Proof Attic Storage room protects valuable items and includes durable white-cell lining on walls and ceilings, particleboard flooring and an attic ladder. While the Premium Attic Storage room is ideal for frequently accessed attics and heavier storage requirements, with structurally-engi-neered floors and plastered walls and ceilings.

Finally, the Attic Living option is a popular way to create extra room with an integrated stairwell. From an extra bedroom, to a study, or a rumpus room, the Attic Group can create a beautiful space that adds value to your home.

Outdoors fireplaces

At this year’s International Builders Show, February 2014 in Las Vegas, EcoSmart Fire [The Fire Company] unveiled new build-in fireplaces from their inaugural Brown Jordan Fires collection, that bring eco-friendly warmth to the high-end outdoors fireplace market. The Evolution model is a zero-clearance firebox that has an elegantly curved back, which encourages the heat to radiate out. Its self-locating frame makes installation simple and the EcoSmart Fire burner, fuelled by clean-burning bioethanol, requires no utility hook-ups or venting.

Efficient heatersThe Heatmaster Enviro is a 4.6 star en-

Insulated building panelsBondor InsulLiving® houses are built from fully engineered

insulated panels that fit together to form a thermal shell, offering protection from the heat or cold. This revolutionary house build-ing system delivers an eight star energy rating, cheaper ongoing energy bills and year-round comfort. The InsulLiving® system capitalises on the buildability and speed of construction afforded by insulated panels. It features Bondor’s InsulWall® panels and SolarSpan® all-in-one insulated roof and ceiling system that deflect heat and cold.

Coloured bricks 50mm high

The new Vibrant Splits collection from PGH Bricks & Pavers is fresh and funky, bold and bright. This new glazed brick develop-ment offers a striking welcome to any residential or commercial project. Opening up many more design options for building pro-jects, the Vibrant Splits are 50mm in height instead of the standard 76mm, complementing the existing Vibrant collection. The range comes in seven colours that are extraordinary for bricks: Fizz (lemon), Paris (pink), Cosmic (plum), Rhapsody (blue), Watermelon (red), Tango (orange) and Wasabi (green). Each vivid shade suggests bright, happy days with a pop of passion and vibrancy. Finished in a full ceramic glaze, the Vibrant palette places a new perspective on bricks and the way they are used. They are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Channel 9’s most recent season of The Block – The Block Sky High – demonstrated a stunning application of the Watermelon hue with Vibrant Splits in the internal foyer. Outside, the standard sized bricks from the Vibrant collection in the same shade take centre stage at the external entry to the building. The Watermelon glazed colour gives an inviting and playful entrance. The contrasting use of both the standard size and the split fully glazed bricks creates a wonderful variation of texture and an overall finish that is unique, fun and fresh.

DIY renovating with Hebel concrete blocksCSR Hebel has released some DIY-projects, ranging from

those suited to adventurous DIYers through to more simple projects like building a letterbox or dog kennel. These DIY projects are designed to be easy to make and use readily available Hebel blocks and panels, which are available from hardware retailers like Bunnings. In addition to the estab-lished uses of Hebel blocks to build homes and internal walls, Hebel is increasingly being used around outdoor areas such as BBQ bases, outdoor seating, letterboxes, planter boxes and garden beds. Lightweight, yet solid, Hebel aerated concrete makes building outdoor lifestyle projects much easier for the home handyperson. To better highlight these DIY attributes Hebel has launched Hebel Handi - a range of DIY projects for both inside and outside the home that include an easy-to-follow DIY project sheet that can be down-loaded from the Hebel website.

Hebel is Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) manufactured from sand, cement, recycled material, lime, gypsum and aerating agents. It is first specially wet moulded to create the aerated structure; semi-cured so it can be handled and cut to shape in various lengths and profiles; then finally fully cured in a steam pressure autoclave to create the hard finish. Hebel is marketed and developed in Australia by CSR Building Products Limited.

Garage floor makeoverRefurbishing the garage

floor can expand your entertaining space. You can give your garage a make-over using Rust-Oleum® EPOXYShield® Garage Floor Coating [$199]. This DIY kit makes it easy to turn an ordinary garage floor (55 square metres) into the ultimate concrete surface with a terrazzo-like finish. It is an epoxy based paint kit specifically designed for use on concrete floors. It will not flake, peel or rub off if done correctly. It comes in a number of different sizes depending on the amount of space you need to paint. Just one coat of the thick EPOXYShield® formulation resists abrasion, as well as chemical and water dam-age. The result is a garage floor that’s easy to keep clean, with a quality finish protected against petrol stains, motor oil and hot tyre pick up. A non-slip coating can also be applied for additional safety – particularly use-ful if used on laundry, basement or other interior concrete floors. It is available from hardware stores and paint specialists nationally. The kit includes a base and activator, concrete etch, decorative colour chips, stirring stick, instruction sheet and DVD.

Certified carbon-neutral bricks

Brickworks Building Prod-ucts has announced the launch of their new carbon-neutral bricks and pavers under the Federal Govern-ment’s National Carbon Offset Standard. The bricks are available nationally under the Daniel Robertson brand and are manufactured by Brickworks’ subsidiary Austral Bricks at its Long-ford plant in Tasmania. The carbon-neutral certification of the range of pavers and bricks manufactured at Longford is largely achieved by the use of an alternative fuel for kiln-firing. That fuel is sawdust, a biomass material and a by-product of the Tasmanian timber industry. The use of low-emissions biomass, as opposed to fossil fuels, is largely responsible for the Longford plant’s low carbon dioxide emissions.

Emissions from the biomass are just 215 tonnes per year - about the same as 12 average Australian households. The certification under the Carbon Neutral Program measures all emissions con-tributors, such as raw material extraction, onsite transport, product deliveries across Australia and internationally, water usage, pack-aging, waste and business operations - not just kiln emissions. All remaining greenhouse gas emissions are offset by purchasing carbon credits in Tasmanian projects, like tree planting under the Forests Alive program.

Super gloss panel for kitchens and bathroom renovations

Australian design and manu-facturing company EGR Building Products has launched its supe-rior high gloss and anti-ripple panels as part of its contempo-rary StyleLite panel collection. The StyleLite super gloss panel’s sheet, substrate and lamination are all manufactured in Queens-land, and available throughout Australia. StyleLite products are specifically designed for the Australian climate, are resistant to UV fading, easy to work with and are durable-alternatives for the kitchen and bathroom. These panels have a superior gloss level, have no ripples when lami-nated, and can be easily repaired and refinished. They have been designed to offer home-renovators the image of luxury without an expensive price tag.

StyleLite has a wide range of in-home applications and can be used on all vertical surfaces including drawers, doors, cabinets, wall units and cupboards; and is ideal for all kitchen-, bathroom- and bedroom-applications. The company expects to see an increase in pickup of StyleLite due to its sleek and sophisticated look, long-term durability and how easily accessible it is for tradespeople compared to two-pack paint and other high gloss panels.

Building materials websites

Daniel Robertson Bricks has launched a new website at www.danielrobertson.com.au for their bricks and pavers. The products’ point of difference is their rustic, textured appearance. Users of the website can access images in the Design Gallery and search for case studies using products from the Daniel Robertson range for inspiration. The site allows you to download CAD files of brick swatches, providing the option to digitally-design, as well as save or print them.

Austral Precast, supplier of customisable precast concrete panels and other concrete products, has revitalised their website for de-signers and renovators at www.australprecast.com.au. This new website offers an increased level of information and web support in an easy-to-use, functional design, including information on the company’s walling and flooring products, as well as other items including columns and beams, parapets and signage products.

Brickworks Building Products has updated its website www.buildforliving.com.au. The website is split across four cate-gories: Make – covering production; Move – focusing on packaging and processing; Use - which focuses on the energy efficiency and environment-benefits of the group’s products; and Re-Use – the recycling and reuse processes.

Bushfire survival pumpsThe Aussie Bushfire

Survival Plan [prepared by Aussie Pumps and available online] maps out two options: stay and defend; or leave early and avoid the fire altogether. The compa-ny warns against emo-tional decisions about staying to defend when equipment, water or supplies are inadequate. People often think they can use their pool pump or other electric pump to protect their property. But what many people don’t realise is that one of the first things that happen in a bushfire is that the power goes out leaving an electric pumping system useless.

Accordingly, the foundation of a protection plan is a quality petrol-powered pump. The Aussie Fire Chief was designed for Aus-tralian bushfire fighting conditions. It’s typical of the type of top quality product that should be the heart of any external sprinkler or fire protection system. This powerful pump will enable you to run a sprinkler system while, at the same time, supporting a 1-inch fire-fighting hose and nozzle for mopping-up. The Aussie Bushfire Sur-vival Plan deals with an analysis of the site conditions and provides recommendations and practical advice on property fire protection systems.

Property preparation and guidelines on design and installation of sprinkler systems are all included in the guide. Other vital informa-tion includes: the advantages and features of either petrol or diesel drive pumps; the use of lightweight, Ultralight pumps; and the vital pre-season preparation and servicing that must be carried out to equipment to make sure it works when it has to.

Burglar-resistant windows15 seconds – that’s how long

a professional burglar needs on average to get through a door or window into a house. Because security at home is so impor-tant it is worthwhile to invest in products with security features. Quality doors and windows by Paarhammer provide a strong impediment and put up resist-ance, security which warns off even professional burglars. About 70% of burglaries are deeds of opportunity – the burglar strikes when the oppor-tunity arises. Many windows and doors can be opened with just a screw-driver or a credit card. Windows or doors with high security fittings will deter burglars: the thief knows that this takes a lot of work and time to get in; and who takes longer to break in risks being seen. Windows and doors with multi-point locking act as a deterrent for burglars. Paarham-mer uses special metal-to-metal locking spaced around the frame which securely fastens the sash into the frame. And for doors they use a multi-point locking system.

Double or triple glazing is not easily broken and removing the shards to gain entry takes time; it is loud and increases the danger of injury, both things a burglar tries to avoid. For those homeowners who would like to increase their security even further, it is possible to use laminated or even special burglar-proof glass. For entry doors there are extra secu-rity features like hooks on multi-point locks available. All these are dif-ficulties designed to send the burglar packing. If they don’t get in after two attempts they usually give up. The risk of being discovered is too great for burglars. Quality windows and doors today need to offer many advantages: next to aesthetics and energy-efficiency, security is often a deciding factor in the purchase.

Fix leaking balconiesA common problem in apartment buildings is leaking

from balconies into the interior of the apartment during very wet weather. This can lead to damage to floor cover-ings and possibly also to the building-structure in the longer term. An easy and effective solution that stops balconies from leaking is to brush-on CPC Product’s SHOWER PLUG waterproofing sealant over the substrate. This will prevent water from entering the surface for up to ten years. The process is easy and inexpensive as it is not necessary to re-move tiles and replace membranes in order to fix the leaks. SHOWER PLUG is a penetrating sealant that soaks into the substrate and does not change the appearance and texture of the surface. An added benefit is that it inhibits efflores-cence and mould, thereby keeping the building’s exterior clean and attractive. Available from hardware stores.

Architectural glass selection guide

Viridian has launched its 141-page 2014 Viridian Archi-tectural Glass Selection Guide. Designed to provide architects and specifiers with a broad range of information relating to glass types, sizes, properties, behaviours and configurations in Viridian’s product range, this latest guide presents numerous updates to the 2013 edition. Offering comprehensive glaz-ing solutions to building design professionals, the 2014 guide outlines many of the key con-siderations around glass selec-tion in facades, interiors and glazing systems. The Guide profiles Viridian’s comprehensive range of glazing solutions which include security, fire protection, decora-tive, noise control and self-cleaning glass options. It can be down-loaded from the Viridian website www.glassguide.viridianglass.com; or is available in print version from Viridian.

Designer doors for luxury home

A recently completed wa-terfront project in Sydney’s Drummoyne illustrates the creative new Axolotl coating techniques that can make a statement of any entrance. The client worked directly with Axolotl’s in-house design team to select finishes and designs that complemented the natural stone and bronze elements already chosen for the home. The door and side panel were finished with a contemporary lineal pattern and then coated with Treas-ury Bronze Pearl with a Lunar texture. Axolotl LINK glass, with a Seaweed pattern in Brown Rust, was chosen for a divider wall on the top level. It brings a soft diffused view from the lounge and a stunning feature for guests arriving from the lift. The results beautifully reflect the meticulous material selection and perfectly executed workmanship.

Energy efficient glass façade for doors and windowsWith a low U-value of 0.8 the new ECO Façade by Paarhammer is

constructed from timber, double- and triple-glazing and aluminium cladding. Doors, windows, fixed glass or solid panels are easily in-serted to create an architectural look while being functional. Used in Europe, USA and Canada in medium-rise commercial as well as in multi-level residential buildings, these façades can reduce energy-use by up to 80%, saving on heating and cooling costs every day for the life of the property.

Paarhammer’s new release is slender and sturdy. The visible hard-wearing and maintenance-free aluminium outer skin profile is only 50mm wide and available in a variety of colours. The internal timber structure ensures stability and high energy efficiency, which makes it suitable for a passive-house façade; and the internal timber-construc-tion can be load bearing. As each glass panel operates independently, inserts of openable windows or doors can easily be accommodated to suit design-requirements, operated manually or motorised. Doors can be single, French, bi-fold or sliding; while glass units between 24 and 48mm to customer’s specifications can be inserted. All different glass combinations including Low-E, tinted, self-cleaning, etc, are possible to make up double- or triple-glazed units.

Laminated timber for the walls

Quick-Step’s laminate- and timber-flooring can also be installed on walls and ceilings to create an interesting new look to many rooms of the house. The use of timber on walls often exudes class and grandeur. Timber floor panels on the walls will also create a slick, contemporary focal point or feature wall to any living area or bedroom. The symmetry and flow from wall to floor will be fluid and sassy. For the ceiling, timber panels can create a cosiness and warmth that resembles a log cabin.

Landscaping backyards with timber

Creating a backyard retreat, an outdoors-room, is becoming a popular renovation-pro-ject, whether it’s for an inner city courtyard or a suburban garden. The Australian climate means we can dine and entertain al fresco for many months of the year. Renovators can spruce up outdoors areas by getting creative with colour and space and adding some per-sonal touches. Landscaping with timber can improve the aesthetics and layout of an out-doors area and expand a home’s living space. Garden walls, timber screening, seating-and-storage offer value-adding design features as well as functionality. Timber walls and screens can create privacy and also blend with the garden. If existing walls and fences are unsightly, applying timber decking, horizontally or vertically, is a smart makeover idea.

Timber structures can help define different areas for various uses, creating casual or formal spaces for entertaining, gardening or play. You can add some foliage, furniture and soft furnishings to finish off the look. When selecting timber for landscaping projects, consideration should be given to its strength and how easily it complements other materi-als. Australian hardwood species are an excellent choice not only for decking but also for a variety of exterior home improvements, because of their high density, toughness and durability. Some species, such as Blackbutt and Spotted Gum, are bushfire-resistant with Blackbutt also offering termite-resistance. Boral decking is seasoned to ensure optimum hardness, stability and long service life. Hardwoods are easy to stain to coordinate with an outdoors colour scheme, or can be left untreated to create a natural, weathered look. Boral has achieved Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certification (AS 4707-2006) for its timber products. This means that timber used to produce Boral Timber’s hardwood flooring, decking and structural timber has been sourced from certified, legal and sustainably managed resources.

For those looking for a little inspiration, it includes a gallery of pre-designed bathrooms created by Reece experts. And to make sharing your dream bathroom easy, you can save and print your bathroom designs, including the floor plans, elevations, product selections and multiple-perspective views.

Designing a garden-bathroom

Bringing the outdoors in is a rising trend in bathroom design: a large window framing lush green foliage; a glass door or louvres opening to the garden; or a bathroom opening completely to a pond, courtyard or patio. Key to achieving the look is to keep the interior of the bathroom uncluttered. Smaller bathrooms in particu-lar will benefit from ‘visual trickery’ whereby wall-hung fixtures, such as vanities and toilets, create the illusion of more space and ‘dead space’ (such as a tight corner) is used for storage, keeping toiletries and ‘clutter’ out of sight. For those with space, a free-standing sculptural bath is a must-have and Kohler’s Escale brings just the right shape and proportions to the mix. It is available as either a conventional bath or with BubbleMassage technology.

To complement the shape of the Escale bath Kohler has released the Escale 1010mm bench top basin with integrated counter space – this sits atop your vanity of choice and can be teamed with a sculptural mixer tap such as the four star WELS rated Symbol [7.5L per min]. To complete the Escale look there is a four star WELS rated back to wall toilet suite [4.5L full flush/3L half flush]. If you want to enhance the feeling of space, choose the wall hung version with concealed cistern [4 star WELS, 4.5L full/3L half]. Showers can be open-plan, or defined by a shower screen or free standing wall. Whatever the space, choose a multifunction shower that can pamper tired bodies and aching muscles with a strong massage spray or a refreshing, restorative deluge of water. Kohler’s Flipside showerhead [3 star WELS, 8.5L/min], with its four spray functions at a flip of the head, is the easy answer.

Bathroom mirror demister

Coldbuster Australia sup-plies a range of heating prod-ucts for the contracting and DIY markets. Their latest Mir-ror De-misters come in two sizes: 400 x 600mm (40Watts); and 600 x 800mm (85Watts). These demisters are paper thin, mounted on an adhesive back-ing with a 1.3m long lead. You simply pull off the wax paper backing and stick it to the back of the mirror. The demister is usually connected to the light circuit by an electrician.

And you have the option of damage-free-removal if required at a later date. Distributed by Master Distributors through hardware stores nation-wide.

What is a shower system? A shower system is a combination of multiple showers in the one shower unit, such as:

overhead showers, body jets, hand shower and thermostat with diverters to control the temperature and flow. Available through Just Bathroomware at Drummoyne and Crows Nest, Sydney, a Hansgrohe shower system provides an experience like a day spa with relaxing water jets at every angle. Precise temperature control with the thermostatic mixer ensures constant temperature without hot and cold flushes. Hansgrohe thermostats keep the shower at a constant temperature independent of toilet flushes, dishwashers and other water use in the home. For a shower that suits all members of the family, regardless of preference, height or age, you can choose from overheads or rail showers, while body jets are great for massaging tired muscles and for showering without getting your hair wet.

Simpler-to-use microwave oven

The Breville Quick Touch microwave oven incorporates the three variables criti-cal to achieving best results: power level; ingredient weight; and time. This appliance understands how much time and power is required to reheat, cook or defrost perfect-ly: so all you need to program is the weight. Baking-enthusiasts will appreciate the Sof-ten Butter and Melt Chocolate settings; and lovers of leftover pizza will enjoy the one touch Favourite setting for reheating. The ‘A Bit More’ setting that was introduced into Breville toasters has also been included in the Quick Touch microwaves. This adds an additional 15% of the programmed cook-ing time at the right power level. The new Breville Quick Touch microwave [$399.95] is available in four colours [stainless, white, cranberry or black sesame]; with colour-matched kitchen scales also available [$69.95].

Concrete roofing tile in 12 colours

Inspired by the latest trends, Monier Roofing’s new concrete tile colour palette contains a broader and more versatile range of colours. The new palette includes 12 new colours [not available in all states], allowing greater flexibility when it comes to the colour scheme of a home.

The palette starts at the lighter end of the spec-trum with a range of lighter tones in response to a shift to lighter-coloured roofs and the desire to manage climate change. The colour palette then deepens into tawny colours that are almost leather-like and moves to the popular classics of mid-greys and earth tones, right through to black (Sambuca).

Monier has extended its palette into the blue-grey colours with Babylon, Camelot and Atlantis. Camelot is a dark, smoky blue that adds another dimension to concrete roof tiles and is destined to be a popular colour based on current trends. Other greys also remain a popular aspect of the range with colours ranging from brown-greys to green-greys and pure greys.

These grey tones bring a more sophisticated selection to the concrete roof tile, which is also mirrored in current interiors and exteriors colours. Monier’s contemporary new colour palette has been lightened with the introduction of Vodka, which is joined by other lighter tones of Huon (green), Atlantis (blue), Marlin (grey), Wild Rice (off white) and Chai (brown).

Bristile Roofing now offers the Medio Curva from La Escandella Ceramica, a roof tile designed for architectural projects seeking to capture the distinctive and exquisite character of mission-style roofs that have crowned homes, civic buildings and architectural landmarks for centuries. Traditionally, this two-piece tile, also referred to as a mission-barrel tile, was the most frequently used roof tile in European and Spanish colonial buildings. Today, the Medio Curva tile can be used in existing projects to restore historic roofs to their former beauty; and in new builds and renovations to add a distinctive and sophisticated architectural aspect to a roofline. Unlike most roof tiles it is ideal for tiled domed roofs, including churches and monasteries, thanks to its special installation-process.

Employing a system of installation which has long been used in European and Mediterranean architecture, the Me-dio Curva is laid as a two-piece with alternate tiles inverted so each tile cups the previous one, creating an eye-catching finish. Time-honoured techniques and contemporary prac-tices are bought together in the installation of the Medio Curva tile, which can be laid on curved roofs and roof pitches as low as 10-degrees due to the innovative use of fibre-cement sheet corrugated to the shape of the tile. This makes the tile an aesthetic finish and the fibre cement sheet the roof-sealing component.

The Medio Curva tile is available in an array of colours, includ-ing monotone, duotone, blended and aged colour options, exuding classic European style. The monotone tiles have one consistent col-our across the body, creating a clean finish that blends seamlessly

with traditional and contemporary architectural designs. The duo-tone finish is achieved through use of a colour overspray applied to either a red or white clay tile base; while the pre-mixed blended colours create a roof reminiscent of those seen in Spain, Italy and other parts of Europe where these tiles have been popular for cen-turies. These blends combine three to five different tiles, which are merged across the roof. The aged colours add a distinctive finish to a home or building and are suited for historic restorations, creating a weathered or reclaimed look without the associated costs.

Luxury baths with seamless enamelled panelling Kaldewei’s latest range of baths, Masterpiece, embodies state-of-the-art

manufacture and precise craftsmanship. In a sophisticated technique their bath-models Conoduo, Asymmetric Duo and Centro Duo Oval are hand-finished to perfection to include panelling made from prestigious Kaldewei 3.5mm steel enamel. All three models address the desire for spacious bath-room architecture that provides for positioning of the bath anywhere in the room. In a new approach to production using modern technology for deep drawing the steel, Kaldewei applies precise handcrafting for a smooth transi-tion from panelling to bath as a guarantee of the outstanding quality of this new bath. The Masterpiece collection is geared to high-end housing and five-star hotels.

Initially, these three baths are offered in Alpine White: the Centro Duo Oval is available in the two sizes 170 x 75 cm and 180 x 80 cm; the Conoduo comes in the size 170 x 75 cm; while the Asymmetric Duo bath in Master-piece version measures 170 x 80 cm.

All baths in the Masterpiece collection are provided with Kaldewei’s easy-care finish as standard, and are available with optional features to enhance the indi-vidual bathing experience in-cluding the new Sound Wave bath audio system, where the bath acts as the sound box. Sound Wave allows you to en-joy a hot bath immersed liter-ally in your favourite music. Other special features include the Kaldewei whirl system Vivo Vita for pure, relaxation; or the Kaldewei electronic controls Comfort Select.

Dust extractors for trade-tools

Festool has revamped its range of dust-extractors by introducing the new CTL MINI/MIDI generation with up to 40% more suction pow-er, and the new CT 17 E universal extractor. The 40% greater suc-tion power of the new mobile CTL MINI and MIDI is attributed to the combination of 3,700 l/min suc-tion capacity, 240 mbar vacuum and a special tapered suction hose. These two compact extractors are ideal for assembly, installation and renovation applications and are equipped with a number of intelli-gent features such as a hose holder for shorter set-up times; self-clean filter bags for constant suction power; and they are compatible with the SYS T-LOC system which can be attached to the top.

Alternatively, the CT 17 E mobile vacuum is ideal for cleaning-up in the workshop or garage; and is suitable for both wet and dry extraction. The single-speed high-performance turbine ensures a high suction power and flow rate. It also incorporates an additional blow function with a sealing cap on the rear of the housing, and a control for adjusting the suction power.

Compact lightweight chainsaw

The WG368E [$299] is the latest addition to the WORX 40V Li-Ion cordless garden range and is an ideal chainsaw for domestic trimming and pruning jobs. Powered by the 40V Max 2.0 Ah Lithi-um Ion battery, a single charge will provide around 80 cuts through a 10x10cm block of pinewood. Weighing 3.8kg it is relatively light and surprisingly mobile; and with a bar length of 30cm it’s suited to just about every backyard gardening job. Chain tensioning and replacement is easy and can be done without the use of a tool. The WG368E also features automatic oil lubrication with a level indica-tor to let you know when it’s time to top up. Accessories include an extra battery pack, charger, lubrication oil and blade protection cover.

Surface protection against water

Rust-Oleum® NeverWet is a new class of surface protection. A super-hydrophoic treatment causes liquid to form nearly perfect spheres, which roll away keeping items clean and dry. It also guards surfaces against corrosion and wear caused by expo-sure to moisture. When water, mud and ice contact a NeverWet treated surface, the extreme contact angle causes the liquid to form beads, like marbles of water, which then glide off the surface, keeping the item clean and dry. Suitable for use on a wide range of materials including metal, wood, aluminium, concrete, canvas, and most plastics, this temporary surface treatment is ideal for indoor and outdoor applications.

Applications include: protect car wheels and paint finishes from corrosion; gardening tools and outdoor furniture are easier to clean; camping equipment stays dry for quick pack-up and storage; shoes and school bags stay clean and dry; scooters and bikes can be protected from rust; and no more wet puddles from dripping umbrellas.

A two-step spray-on application, NeverWet dries to a flat, lightly frosted finish and is touch dry within 30 minutes of the final top coat. Formulated with UV inhibitors, the NeverWet coating will not degrade from exposure to sunlight. Resistant to normal wear and tear, NeverWet needs to be reapplied when liquids no longer easily roll off the surface. You would then lightly scuff or sand the item [to remove the residual treatment] then reapply base and top coat. NeverWet is not recommended for use on glass surfaces, like win-dows or windshields, clothes or electronic devices and accessories. Available from Bunnings Warehouse and hardware stores nationally for $29.95.

Jackhammer trolley for floor-renovations

The Makinex Jackhammer Trolley has recently been re-designed for improved ergonomics. It is able to reduce labour time by as much as six times and has been widely used in the flooring indus-try for tile-removal, demolition and surface-preparation. It takes the majority of weight, vibration and impact of a jackhammer, thereby reducing back-pain and operator-fatigue. Improved features include: better grip and traction when pushing the trolley via sheet metal burst holes on the foot plate; less force on the user when adjusting the trolley height due to a more rigid cable release sys-tem; assembly of hammers and block sets made easier with clear instructional sticker; and improved brand-specific block kits for Hilti, Makita, Bosch, Hitachi and DeWalt. The unit is manufactured from steel components and comprises a main frame, base frame, handle and hammer clamp. Optional attachments such as a wide chisel and tile smasher are available.

Made from reclaimed crustacean shells, Zodiac Smart Pods, their latest product-development, offers pool chemical care that’s super easy and environment-friendly. The single-use pre-measured dose means no bottles and no fuss. The “Drop & Go” technology reduces the time needed to maintain your pool. They are available in 2 formulations: the TURBO CLEAR Smart Pod treats the cloudiest pool water within 24 hours with an ultra-concentrated formula; while the EZY CARE Smart Pod is a 3-in-1 weekly treatment product that keeps your water clear, removes phosphates and helps prevent oil and scum built-up. Both are priced from $19.95 and come in a reseal-able two-dosage pouch.

Bagless vacuum cleaner range

Bosch has just released its Runn’n compact bagless vacuums, ideal for smaller households. The new ProSilence [$499] and ProEssen-tial models [$399] are quiet, powerful and compact, weighing just 5.8 kg. The ProSilence operates at just 71dB (A) and features a high performance noz-zle that operates at 62dB (A). The nozzle is optimal for all floor surfaces and clean-ing needs. These new vacs have Bosch’s SensorBagless System, which notifies you when the filter needs to be manually cleaned. Constant airflow measurement ensures the vacuum is always perform-ing optimally and the filter is cleaned only when required, minimising maintenance and removing ongoing filter costs. With Bosch’s bagless vacuums, the HEPA filter never needs to be replaced; both models have an easy-to-remove and easy-to-clean 1.9L capacity canister; and they also have cable-rewind with an operating radius of 10m. Accessories include a 2-in-1 crevice tool and upholstery brush. The Runn’n vacuum range from Bosch is available at Harvey Norman stores nationally.

The Rover Mini Rider [$1699] is de-signed for homeowners with smaller lawns who require the use of a ride-on. It’s the ideal mower for people who may not be able to, or want to push a mower around their backyard. The compact size means it’s also easy to store away, making it ideal for suburban properties where storage is often at a premium. Featuring a 420cc OHV Rover engine with a 6-speed transmis-sion and a 76cm cutting deck, it is ideal for block sizes between a quarter-acre to an acre. With a bagger, mulching kit, and bumper available as extras, the Mini Rider has everything you need to maintain a quality lawn with minimal effort.

One-handed planer

Festool’s electric one-handed planer [the EHL 65] uses an inclined spiral blade. In addition to the surface finish, an empha-sis was placed on further optimising the ergonomics, precision and speed of the machine. The fine cutting depth setting of 0-4mm and a maximum rebate depth of 23mm also make this planer impres-sive in terms of speed and versatility. As a result you can achieve a high material removal rate; and also a superior surface quality. It has a compact design and 30% lower weight, compared to many other planers. Some details affecting handling have been radically reworked, such as the new soft grip and the one-button operation feature, which allows for a more comfort-able working experience as well as greater ease of use for both right and left handers. Moreover, its signature inclined-cut has significantly reduced the noise generated by the machine. Efficient dust extraction maintains a healthy work environment and reduces the amount of cleaning work necessary. The extractor hose can be con-nected to the left or right depending on requirements, thereby providing greater freedom of movement.

Tough pumps for emergencies

Aussie Pumps’ new Red Brigade en-hanced performance fire pumps were de-veloped for Australia’s often- catastrophic fire seasons. Chris-tened the Red Brigade because of their distinctive red roll frame, this range provides improved performance, enhanced efficiencies and real benefits in terms of safety and convenience for fire fighters, farmers and home owners. Many users had asked for more performance, a bit more grunt and the convenience of roll frames and electric start. Electric start on a fire pump means not having to rely on “muscle power” and that could save prop-erty, livestock or even human lives.

Consistent with the Aussie Fire Chief concept, the new Red Brigade pump has a big body featuring open water passages that enable more water through the pump at pressure. The company’s teamed that with a finely tuned hydraulically balanced impeller that delivers consistent pressure and flow without overloading the engine. Like the entire Aussie Pump range, the new Red Brigade series will prime from 7.6m head. The three way outlet allows the operator the flexibility of using either two 1” ports or one 1½” port. The outlets are capped with metal screw caps fitted with security chains as standard equipment.

Full Size bath in 600mm space

The Kaldewei Studio Bath provides a full-size bath solution which will fit into a 600mm space behind the door [at the foot end], opening into a full width bath to accommodate the bather in complete comfort. So in a bathroom where there was apparently no possibility of a full bathing experience, Studio offers a solution with its integrated panel. This may also provide the opportunity for a separate showering area as well, which may not be defined with a glass screen but just be an integral part of the room and be a “wet area”, maybe with a concealed “gutter” along one wall.

Bathroom design ideas

Hansgrohe has followed-up the publication of their planning brochure “Das Hotelbad 38°” with their new “Design Handbook”, the latest companion for architects and interior de-signers produced by the German bathroom and shower specialist. The “Design Handbook” provides support in the selection of showerheads and mixers for project business. The Hansgrohe home-page (www.pro.hansgrohe.de) provides sup-plementary information across the entire product range. The “Design Handbook” planning tool is available in both German and English and free of charge from Hans-grohe Deutschland GmbH. To order, you can e-mail [email protected]

The “Das Hotelbad 38°” planning bro-chure is available in a new edition for 2014. Full of solutions, products and inspirational ideas, it is aimed at hotel operators and bathroom designers. The “Design Hand-book” is a compendium of outstanding products and large-scale projects in hous-ing, hotel and cruise operations, as well as public institutions. Both publications are for architects and interior designers.

Egg-shaped bath

Paco Jaanson has included the Rexa Unico Egg Bath in their bathroomware collection. With this model Rexa aims to make space more usable and create lasting impressions. Offering a spa-like design that can rejuvenate any bathroom, this bath embodies tasteful blends of stylish and contemporary bathroom decor. Its integrat-ed shelf adds functionality; while the dif-ferent incline-grades at the two ends of this Korakril™ bath provide comfort whether seated or lying down. Comprising a mix-ture of acrylic, resins and natural minerals Korakril™ produces a resistant, hygienic, antistatic, light- and stain-proof bath.

Electronic shower systemThe key compo-

nent to a perfect shower system is the showerhead. Respon-sible for administer-ing the water pres-sure and distribution, showerheads are the most pivotal part of any functional show-er. Faucet Strommen has developed their showerheads in Aus-tralia, but the system’s technological star is its ther-mostatic shower mixer. This sleek mirror-polished interface reflects true minimalism and understated luxury in any modern architectural bathroom. Multi-faceted controls and adjustments guarantee the per-fect temperature and water flow for each and every shower.

The in-wall electronic mixing valve regulates the hot and cold water supply to deliver the perfect mo-tion and flux of water. The system allows you to ad-just the pressure of the water whilst showering with-out impacting the temperature of the water. From a gentle trickle to a maximum flow, the thermostatic shower mixer will suit all shower needs. Adjusting the water temperature is as simple as an easy rotation of the upper control dial. Smooth rotation promises no uncomfortable surprises as the temperature changes at your own comfort and speed. Available through Candana Designs, Sydney.

Italian-made bathroom items

TheTrapezio Furniture Frame has a wide shelf and a wooden towel bar. Inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian furnishings, Trapezio is the vision of Sandro Meneghello and Marco Paolelli of Italian design firm Meneghello Paolelli Associati. Crafted in natural oak, the organic texture of this beautiful structure is complemented by either the Piattone or Cow bench basin. The Piattone basin delivers an opulent and refined look with its wide base and thin rim, reflecting the expertise of Art Ceram’s advanced manufacturing capabilities. Alter-natively, the Cow basin, with its contem-porary soft lines, enables Trapezio to take on a more playful feel. Along with Piattone and Cow, Trapezio is manufactured entirely in Italy by Art Ceram, a global leader in sanitaryware and bathroom furnishings. These bathroom products are new to Aus-tralia and available from Just Bathroom-ware, Sydney.

Compact kitchen cooking appliances

Smeg has seen significant growth in its compact applianc-es that are the standard 600mm wide but just 450mm high, de-signed to be installed in a bank either at the ‘midway point’ (chest or eye level) or under-bench. The range comprises: convection oven with micro-wave [$3290]; combi steam/convection oven [$4490]; dedi-cated steam oven [$3290]; mi-crowave oven with grill function [$2790]; and a built-in coffee machine [$4290]. These appli-ances are offered in two distinct design aesthetics: the Classic all stainless steel (in the kitchen pictured); and the contempo-rary Linear in stainless steel and glass. Each appliance, be it Classic or Linear, has matching aesthet-ics to provide that homogeneous look to a kitchen.

The owners of the kitchen pictured, designed by Kim Duffin of Sublime Architectural Interiors, wanted to take full advantage of natural light and surrounding rural views. While the midpoint bank of appliances satisfied the ergonomics, ventilation posed a different hurdle. A solution was found in the twin Smeg cylindrical stainless steel rangehoods [$2490 each], 370mm in diameter and moving up to 620m3 of air/hour.

Designer flood lightingErnesto Gismondi is the founder and visionary behind Artemide,

and is a leading contributor of product development, with particu-lar focus on advanced technologies. Now available in Australia, his latest outdoor designs Epulo and Provoca utilise high performance LED light sources, and offer two varying solutions for outdoor flood lighting.

Epulo [$765] can be mounted to the floor, wall or eaves to pro-vide the ideal position for outdoor illumination. Featuring a cleverly engineered spherical joint that allows directional light control, it has two sizes - Epulo 13 and Epulo 18 - making it suited to various scales of lighting. Offering optimal aesthetic and functional lighting variations, Epulo is available in two finishes - light grey and anthra-cite; and three choices of LED emission colour - warm, neutral and cold.

Meanwhile, Provoca [$1058] is available as either a pole or wall mounted fitting and is suited for illuminating large areas. Con-structed of die cast aluminium, this high performance commercial fitting features metalized polycarbonate optics sealed behind a shock resistant tempered glass screen. Provoca offers direct illumi-nation via its high performance LED light sources providing a wide and efficient lighting landscape for open areas.

Swiss hotel bathroom luxuryOpened in December 2013, the Swiss Chedi hotel

subtly blends tradition with modernity. Inspired by the charm of Swiss grand hotels and chalets, it is built in an alpine architectural-style. Natural materials such as stone, polished wood and supple leather are paired with Asian features. The bathrooms were fitted with the free-standing Centro Duo Oval bath alongside the Kusatsu Pool inspired by Japanese bathing culture and the Conopool, all made from Kaldewei’s 3.5 mm steel enamel. This hard-wearing material ensures that the surface looks as new even after years of daily use. The spa area and the luxury apartments present a new initiative from Kaldewei: the generously propor-tioned Conopool with Vivo Turbo whirl system offer-ing enjoyable bathing in a luxury pool.

With space of 50-100m2, the 104 guest rooms com-plement the surrounding mountain scenery. The high standard of design applied throughout the hotel is evi-dent in the bathrooms, equipped with free-standing Kaldewei Centro Duo Oval baths. Four other rooms were fitted with the Kaldewei Kusatsu Pool: inspired by Japanese bathing culture, this model is as comfort-able as an armchair and allows guests to submerge their whole body in water.

In the spa area of The Chedi, Kaldewei presents its generously sized Conopool, a recent initiative. The same pleasure of customised Conopool baths with Vivo Turbo whirl system is available for guests to enjoy in the luxury apartments. These large whirl baths made of Kaldewei’s 3.5mm steel enamel and measuring up to 195 x 145cm were manufactured specifically for this project.

Award-winning European bathwareTeuco [distributed nationally by DELSA] has

been awarded two impressive accolades by the German Design Council: the Interior In-novation award for The Seaside Hydroline T08 bathtub; plus The Interior Innovation Award – 2014 Selection for the Milestone in Duralight pedestal basin.

The bathtub embraces Giovanna Talocci’s tal-ent, and the versatility of the functions, such as the concealed taps and water blade, enhance the pleasure of a soaking bath. Meanwhile the wash basin with a monolithic pedestal topped by a horizontal plane by Carlo Colombo cre-ates a dynamic dialogue between straight lines that define the surface characteristics.

British designer tapware

British interior designer Kelly Hoppen has entered the world of bathroomware with a fresh and impressive collection of tapware, distributed in Australia through Paco Jaanson. Her latest collection of basin mixers employs her signature style of clean lines and sleek simplicity. The collection titled KH Zero 2 is aerodynamic in form and has been designed to add a touch of luxury to any bathroom. This contemporary bath-room collection features soft curvaceous shapes and functional design. Prices start at $799 with the collection available na-tionwide from June 2014.

Where do you find 1970s era furniture? For those of you familiar with the Days-of-Gough, VietNam, The Who and the unveiling of the Mini Skirt, Fox: Line Design has released

its new 7eventy Range, a funky collection of sofas, armchairs and Pebbles reminiscent of the psychedelic decade that was [for many peo-ple] the 1970s. With an array of colours and patterns, the 7eventy Range promises to add a burst of vibrancy to any living space, irrespec-tive of which decades you embrace.

The 7eventy Sofas are sleek and stylish in design. Made from polysynthetic leather, they are durable and cost-efficient, coming in three striking colours: Subcontinent Purple, Gobi Red and Aurora Black. Available in two sizes, large [216cm, $1755] and small [183cm, $1440], each sofa comes with a set of five boldly patterned cushions, making for the perfect combination of retro and modern aesthetic.

Meanwhile, the Pebble [$375] is a soft, rounded ottoman that is a quaint addition to the 7eventy Range, adding texture and comfort to any space. It comes in six colour palettes, making them simple and effective to match with existing furniture or other pieces from the 7eventy Range. Perhaps the standout of the Pebble range is the pink, blue, orange and yellow floral design, which pays homage to the late-60s and early-70s Flower-Power movement. Perfect for coffee table books or a place simply to rest your feet, the Pebble creates a dynamic continuity and harmony throughout a living room or lounge space.

There is also a range of armchairs [$685] in the 7eventy Collection featuring three designs: a sleek grey; a retro yellow; and a funky black-based floral. The floral design in particular has taken the best of the Flower-Power motif - much like that of the floral Pebble - and works to define the vibrancy of the 7eventy Range. The beauty of the grey and yellow pieces lies in the simplicity of their design. Their understated elegance adds warmth and comfort to modern design and living.

Non-slip enamelled steel shower surface

Kaldewei’s Secure Plus is a virtually invisible full-surface anti-slip finish for enamelled shower surfaces. Available in the twelve matt colours of their Coordinated Colours Collection, it has advantages not only in terms of comfort and barrier-free access, but also fa-cilitates design-oriented aesthetics in the bathroom. The Kaldewei Secure Plus enamel is permanently fired onto the shower panel made from 3.5mm enamelled steel. The result is a smooth materi-al surface that guarantees complete and lasting safety and comfort underfoot. These enamelled shower surfaces are highly durable, ro-bust and easy to clean. The Secure Plus anti-slip finish is available for Kaldewei enamelled shower surfaces in the Conoflat, Superplan, Superplan Plus and Xetis ranges in all shades of the Coordinated Colours Collection.

External metal venetian shade-blinds

Over 80% of the radiant heat from the sun stays inside the build-ing envelope once it has passed through the glass. This is great in winter; but when you want to stay cool in summer it is either un-comfortable, or the bills for air conditioning get expensive. Curtains do little to solve the problem as the heat is already trapped inside. External venetians offer a solution. Sonnenschutz Shade&Shield [from Paarhammer Windows & Doors] comprises a range of qual-ity external shutters, including their recently developed EVB Exter-nal Venetian Blinds.

The aluminium blades have adjustable slat angles for easy con-trol and regulation between natural light, heat entry and outside views. They can be manually or automatically operated, allowing integration with building control systems where required. The standard range has an 80mm slat width, spans up to 3000mm, and drops up to 2700mm. There is a variety of colours and blade shapes; and there are alternative headbox solutions to choose from. When required the blinds provide 100% blockout and clear views when retracted, and can tolerate wind speed up to 100km/h. Integrated roll-away flyscreens are available on certain options.

Bathing chair for disabilities

A bathing chair that lowers and raises people with disabilities and in-firmities so they can safely enter and leave the bath has been introduced by Safe Bath Australasia. The battery-powered Aqua Joy Bath Lift can reduce substantially the costs of renovating homes to suit people with disabilities because it can fit without modification into existing baths, including walk-in, spa and traditional types. Instead of renovating or building an entirely new bathroom, an Aqua Joy Bath Lift is simply placed inside an existing bath and [at the push of a button] the bather sitting on it moves into and out of the bath. The swivel seat projects over the lip of the bath so users can move easily onto it; then it slides back over the bath to place the occupant into the bath. It is ideal for people who use wheelchairs, scooters and walk-ers. Transferring from a wheelchair to the bath-lift is unproblematic because the transfer is made at the same level between the two seats. One charge generally lasts for 15 lifts; but it will not lower unless there is sufficient charge to rise back to the top of the bath.

Aqua Joy Bath Lifts are both portable and versatile. They are suit-able for deep baths, (having a maximum seat height of 460mm); as well as for shallow baths (with a minimum seat height of 88mm); and the maximum weight limit is 170kg. It separates easily into two compact sections, saving storage space and enabling portabil-ity. Being able to take it to hotels or to a relative’s house eliminates the need to find accommodation with specialised facilities. A range of accessories is available, such as vertical detachable side flaps, lap belts, chest restraints, head rests and pommels, enabling children and adults suffering Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, and other debilitating illnesses to enjoy a bath in safety without fear of injury.

Lower cost alternative tile for that slate-roof look

Bristile Roofing has devel-oped a new roofing product, their Visum3 roof tile, de-signed to replicate the profile of traditional slate tiles as an affordable alternative for those desiring a shingle roof. Part of Bristile’s premium, European-style terracotta roof tile collection La Escandella Ceramica, the Visum3 fea-tures a low profile design with a slim 9mm nose to achieve ultra-flat laying for that shingle and slate appearance. A triple cambered design gives each tile the appearance of three traditional plain tiles laid side-by-side, enabling designers, architects and home-renova-tors to replicate a slate finish on any project.

The Visum3 range is available in five monotone and duotone col-ours comprising: Slate, dark grey tone; Truffle, mid brown; Russet, vibrant red terracotta with darker shades; Old England, earthy ter-racotta with brown tones; and Vermont Grey, weathered grey shade. This broad colour palette allows for applications in both traditional heritage settings and modern architectural designs.

Whilst the Visum3 replicates the classic beauty of natural slate, it offers a number of advantages. Not only does it have a colour-for-life warranty, it is more durable and lightweight and features an innovative interlocking design that facilitates the installation process and ensures an excellent watertightness. The Visum3 roof tile also offers energy saving benefits thanks to the thermal insulat-ing qualities of terracotta which manage heat transmission, helping to keep a home cool in summer and warmer in winter. The same mass that contributes to its thermal performance also provides sound insulation.

Ride-on mower for medium sized blocks

The Made-in-USA Cub Cadet RZT S46 [$5100] is a zero-turn ride-on mower that is suitable for medium to large-sized blocks and comes with features to enhance the overall mowing experience. Sitting atop a large 117cm twin-blade cutting deck, the 22hp V-twin Professional-Grade Kohler® Courage engine provides a superior ride and qui-eter operation. Engine life is prolonged with the Smart Jet™ Deck Wash System that uses high pressure technology to clean out grass and debris build-up. Additionally, with easy engine access, routine maintenance and servicing is quick and easy.

With little effort from the driver, the RZT S46 can tackle jobs both big and small thanks to its ability to easily manoeuvre around landscaping, trees, driveways, and other obstacles. The steering wheel system gives you greater control and confidence on different terrain whilst also providing added comfort; and the specially de-signed wheels provide stability on slopes. The cutting deck is lifted with a handle lever beside the driver for ease of use, while the seat is fully adjustable with high-back support and arm rests for added comfort.

Be safe working at heights

Capital Safety has released their new Nano-Lok™edge self-retracting lifeline engineered for both foot level tie-off and sharp edge applications. The unused lifeline retracts so workers can anchor at their feet, move freely and with confidence at height. It incorporates a 2.4m work-ing length lifeline, ergonomic design, and is available in single or twin (100% tie-off) units. Its tough lifeline material, innova-tive energy absorber, and durable harness connector work together to absorb and limit the arresting forces in the event of a fall, and to mitigate the effect of a sharp edge on the lifeline even under harsh conditions. The Nano-Lok edge personal SRL includes: an integrated backpack-style energy absorber; tough and flexible gal-vanised cable or webbing lifelines; various hook/karabiner options; and an easy-to-install connector for direct harness attachment.
